China sending warship to Syrian coast

posted at 11:01 am on September 8, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

We spend a lot of time debating the domestic ramifications of President Obama’s handling – to use the word loosely – of the situation in Syria, ranging from political fallout to impacts on upcoming elections. But it’s a big world out there and other countries have taken a keen interest in the subject. You can now bump up the level of engagement that China has in this mess, as they have dispatched a warship of their own to the party.

China has reportedly sent warships to the coast of Syria to “observe” the actions of US and Russian ships as tensions build in preparation for a potential military strike on Syria which could come as soon as next week.

According to the Russian news outlet Telegrafist.org, the People’s Liberation Army dispatched the Jinggangshan amphibious dock landing ship and the vessel was seen passing through the Red Sea towards the Suez Canal, the waterway in Egypt that leads to the Mediterranean Sea and waters off the coast of Israel, Lebanon and Syria.

It may be for “observation” purposes, but this is no Carnival cruise ship. Launched in 2011, the Jinggangshan was built for action.

China has launched its largest amphibious dock landing warship, the 19,000 metric ton Jinggangshan, in Shanghai.

The 689-foot-long warship can carry 1,000 soldiers, helicopters, armored fighting vehicles, boats and landing craft, a report in the China Daily said.

The vessel is the second Type 071 dock landing ship built by Shanghai’s Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding.

In addition to the troop and chopper carrying capabilities, the ship has a number of conventional guns. This comes on the heels of news that Russia already dispatched ships to the region this week, so it’s starting to get a little crowded out there. I was watching Fox and Friends this morning – where I first saw the story – and there were some probably hyperbolic comparisons being made to 1914, but it does make one wonder. Over the past two decades, when the United States has decided to launch any sort of air strikes from mobile / naval platforms, it was just taken as a given that we could do it. And our targets generally don’t have much in the way of sea power to challenge elements of the most powerful navy on the planet. But the Russians and the Chinese have considerable forces as well.

This leaves two potential areas for trouble. What if the Russians and / or the Chinese decided to respond to a strike by us with a military option? They’ve got the resources in place – though it still sounds unlikely in the extreme – so Obama has to be taking that into account. The other problem for the President, though, seems to come from the much more likely possibility that he won’t muster any support at home and our ships turn around and leave the area without striking. How bad of an international debacle does that turn out to be when we have ships in place, the Russians and Chinese show up, and we turn tail and leave? It wouldn’t be the reality of what happened, but that’s how it could easily be spun on the international stage. The last standing superpower on the planet comes to a showdown on the ocean and walks away… it’s not a pretty picture.

THIS

Shipmates, of course the US Navy could blow the Ruskies and Chicoms out of the water…but would they? If shooting starts, what are going to be the ROE? What rules will REB and his minions set for “self defense”?

What if Russian/Chinese vessels are between the US Vessels and the beach? Offset waypoints are nice…but have you ever seen a Tomahawk come out of a VLS? Jus sayin

I wonder what the Destroyer’s ROE are in ref to Russian/Chinese war ships?

What do you do? Put your head down and launch the cruise missiles, and count the months to retirement? Resign? Protest through channels?

spiritof61 on September 8, 2013 at 6:59 PM

If an action you’re ordered to perform is a probable war crime, refuse to carry it out, or resign.

Murdering with a cruise missile is no different than pushing people into a trench and shooting them.

There is no protest through channels option. (unless the military allows that now. I still wouldn’t trust it)

Here is a description of the Chinese (HA described Monster ship):

Coome on, you quivering jellyfish. We ain’t gonna have even one of the American fleets cased out of the Med by a bunch of motor boats and landing craft.

Now, I would like to remind all you chicken littles who think a few landing craft are going to chase Nimitz our of the Med:

LHA Wasp 844 ft 40,532 tons
LHA-7 Tripoli 844 FT 45,000 TONS

And we have a beaucoup more of them. Note that one of these ships outclasses the entire Chinese class of amphibs.

“Protest through channels” means carry out the mission and let the superior officer know that you strongly disagree with its (propriety?)(likely outcome?)(value?).

Shooting Tomahawks at clearly defined military targets in Syria cannot be considered a war crime, so the order to do so would be legal and would have to be obeyed. My doubts would revolve around the worth of a mission/order that at least indirectly aids the enemies of my country. But then we do not acknowledge that Syrian jihadists are our enemies. We are prohibited from identifying them, but the ones who are fighting them realize who they are.

Little of what obama does makes sense unless you view it all in the realm of distraction/diversion and running out the clock.
How many times have we seen the bent axel have the regime do exactly that run out the clock. They do it in Benghazi, the irs debacle– never interviewed the first tea party, the budget, debt, still have not OKed any tea party groups, nsa–everything is top secret. All they do is obvusgate, screw around and never answer any questions.
Typical lawyers and make no mistake about it zero–who is a lawyer, is surrounded by lawyers.
Axelrod,Plouffe, Cutter,Moochell, Val/jar,they are all lawyers!! All trained to do exactly what they are doing, avoid the truth.
I predict zero will do little on Syria and forget about it all together by the time the debt renewal comes up in a few weeks. And of course after that its time for amnesty.
None of the scandals that could lead to his impeachment will ever see the light of day. Syria is about massive incompetence and if he is impeached for that it will of course be spin as sheer racism. These commies are too good and too lawyered up.
Also, we will get the blame for Syria, the debt ceiling and then amnesty giving them a pretty clear shot at 2014 when it rolls around.
The play us 24/7 and we don’t even know we are being played.

When Morsi was deposed, the Egyptian military discovered a treasure trove of documents linking the Obama regime with the illegal activities of the Muslim Brotherhood.

One such document is a list of Muslim Brotherhood officials receiving secret bribes in U.S. currency, paid out by the U.S. consulate, amounting to millions of dollars.

Investigative journalist Jerome Corsi has obtained a copy of the document held by the Egyptian military, proving the Obama regime sent millions of dollars in bribes to the Muslim Brotherhood.

We now know it was Obama who reversed the restriction on the NSA, (un-Constitutionally) allowing them to spy on every American (admittedly illegally thousands of times per year), in 2011. This is a major developing factor in this scandal. Where is any politician courageous enough to FINALLY begin talking ‘Impeachment’?

Now the inexperienced ‘Community Organizer’ who is so obviously over his head has brought not only the U.S. but the entire world to the brink of a ‘World War’s because he made an ill-advised threat after straying off Teleprompter and because he now wants to ‘save face’. Is he THAT much of a narcisist that he is willing to risk that World War to protect his image/word? He promised he would ‘fundamentally change’ the U.S., which he has through division, job destroying/economy destroying regulations and legislation & record-setting deficit-spending…through destroying the nation’s image, & setting us down the socialist path, on the path where our health care system collapses into a single payer government system. Is he, however, willing to make us a ‘rogue’s nation by striking Syria alone…and possibly begin a war he ‘intends’ for us to lose…further effecting our stature in the war…further effecting that ‘fundamental change’ he promised in 2007?!

Call me a Conspiracy theorist who is dead wrong. I pray you are right!

How bad of an international debacle does that turn out to be when we have ships in place, the Russians and Chinese show up, and we turn tail and leave?

I

Not that bad at all. When you have the amount of firepower we have I am not concerned about what anyone else thinks. More important we should not goaded with taunts of “chicken” over Syria. South Korea, Yes, Japan, Yes. Not Syria…

It wouldn’t be the reality of what happened, but that’s how it could easily be spun on the international stage. The last standing superpower on the planet comes to a showdown on the ocean and walks away… it’s not a pretty picture.

So is getting involved in Syria a better picture? I say not even close. A temporary, and insignificant, loss of face can easily be recouped by sending more hardware into the Asian theater.

This is how I figure it. The Middle East is a giant strategic trap. The country that becomes entangled there is always worse off after the adventure then before. A sound U.S. strategy would be to openly encourage the Russians and Chinese to become more, not less, involved in the Middle East. Why?

Right now the Russians and Chinese have taken the side of Assad in Syria, Iran, and the Egyptian Military. That means they are directly at odds with the Sunni jihadist, and probably a majority of Sunni Muslims in that part of the world. They are a majority in that part of the world as well.

If the U.S. disengages from that part of the world it will encourage the Russians and force the Chinese (due to their dependence on oil) to become more involved. That means they will become entangled in the trap losing money and depending how involved, lives. It will make them the chief target for every half baked Sunni jihadist out there. In the mean time, the U.S. flush with natural gas and oil due to fracking will be able to gain manufacturing jobs at home due to low energy costs and be able to move the majority of our military (mostly naval) assets to the Asian theater putting significant pressure on China and Russia who will be distracted by the Middle East.

We don’t need to chase Jihadist around all time, force someone else to play wack a jihadist.

Please. An LPD has no business in a potential combat situation alone and unsupported. They are very slow and almost unarmed. The Type 071 mounts one 3″ gun and carries two, count ‘em two helicopters. There are no mysterious hidden weapons systems on the ship — it’s barely large enough to carry out its primary mission (the US equivalent, the San Antonio class, is 25% larger and 100% better armed, and the USN still doesn’t feel that they can operate safely outside of a “benign” environment).

Unless this is some sort of “Crouching Tiger Hidden LPD” sort of thing, where we should be askeered and in awe of the Chinese just on general principles.

The Chinese know (or expect) that he won’t act. They send warships. Then, they (and the Russians) take “credit” for backing down the U.S.

Not suggesting we attack Syria to deny the Chinese the PR win (which will only play at home in China anyway — which is their point, I expect), but it’s all because of the debacle the faux CIC has made of this goulash in the first place.

Where would Obama be during any attack on Syria? We don’t even know where he was during the attack on Benghazi? He barely could focus his attention on the OBL raid. What would happen if he became frustrated, bored or disinterested in the events surrounding Syria and we still had people in harm’s way. Would he just walk away from it? Would he send his people out to lie about it just as they did with the “video”? What is there to trust here? There is no demonstrable martial leadership.

Should Syria use chemical weapons against Israel, there is little doubt Israel will respond with tactical nukes. That is precisely the way Isaiah describes it.

Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap… The nations shall rush like the rushing of many waters: but God shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like a rolling thing before the whirlwind. Tomahawk (depending on what Block ‘upgrade’ is launched) does use GPS (with the military BW) for INS comparisons.
They make a lot of light and a really LOUD noise when they exit the VLS (Vertical Launch System) and don’t quiet down until the booster is jettisoned and the turbofan is started. So, anyone in the vicinity will know about the launch processes. But once they’re in the air they practically disappear.
But the assessments of ‘blink’ regarding their EMI vulnerabilities are more accurate than the nay-sayer’s. Once they get going they are VERY difficult to locate and thus stop.
It is a shame that such an exquisite weapon system must be expended to bolster King Putt and his pathetic administration.
