Good news: Facebook page of Syrian rebel group has image of U.S. Capitol burning

posted at 5:21 pm on September 6, 2013 by Allahpundit

Are these the “bad” rebels or the carefully vetted “good” rebels?

The answer may surprise you!

The image is one of eight photos posted on the official Facebook page of the “Al-Aqsa Islamic Brigades,” a small armed Sunni rebel faction fighting with the Free Syrian Army, the main umbrella military organization of the opposition forces. Two other photos posted on the group’s page feature the widely recognized black flag of the al Qaeda in Iraq terrorist group, which operates freely in Syria…

“As a group that claims affiliation to the generally pro-Western Free Syrian Army, it is difficult to reconcile the fact that it has plastered such a lurid anti-American image as the banner on its own official Facebook page,” [counterterror analyst Evan] Kohlmann said. “It raises the unfortunate but inescapable fact that not every group within the Free Syrian Army is closely aligned with U.S. interests in the region.”

Kerry told the House yesterday that “maybe 15 percent to 25 percent” of the total rebel opposition belongs to jihadi groups. Back to you, NBC:

Several lawmakers questioned Kerry’s assertion and a senior military official told NBC News that actual percentage is “way higher than that.” Defense officials estimate that al Qaeda and related extremists groups now constitute “more than 50 percent” of the rebel force, which is made up of at least 70 different factions, “and it’s growing by the day,” according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The Onion posted a short item last night headlined, “Target Of Future Drone Attack Urges American Intervention In Syria.” That’s meant as satire but it doesn’t really qualify because it’s not exaggerated in any way. It’s undoubtedly true, and some of the would-be targets know it: There are, without question, jihadis on the ground there right now who want us to hit Assad hard for their own reasons and who’ll inevitably be targeted by Predators in the next few years as we try to tip the balance of power from fundamentalists to “moderates.” Like the Al-Aqsa Islamic Brigades.

If you’re curious why the Secretary of State’s sense of how moderate the Syrian opposition is differs from the Pentagon’s, here’s your answer. Meanwhile, in other “moderation” news, one of the key U.S. spokesmen for Syria’s main opposition group has been suspected of terrorism links since the mid-90s. He used to visit U.S. military bases to discuss Islam but was suspended after the Fort Hood massacre and investigated. The military hasn’t released the result of the investigation. The suspension remains in effect.

The US Capitol Bldg. aflame? Only in the wild and crazy dreams of jihadists. Never can happen. Not under the lazerlike focus of our steely CinC and his magnificent DC security force. Never has our nation’s capital been safer nor more secure.

Chances are if the Capitol Bldg was torched, our political class would probably be tipped off and found to be nowhere near Capitol Hill.

But it would give Bammy a chance to declare national martial law under the circumstances, declare those TEA party patriots responsible and bring them to swift justice.

hawkeye54 on September 6, 2013 at 5:35 PM

But they are secular and moderate….according to Senator Senile.

Kind of like the idiot James Clapper describing the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood as a largely secular organization during the Egyptian street riots.

If one starts doing math based on 2+2=5 being a ‘fact’, then pretty much all that follows will also be wrong. Same thing here. The Administration made it’s mistakes regarding Syria starting several years ago. Unless it can admit those mistakes and change course – it’s doomed to continue to make bad decisions and major mistakes.

This is an Administration comprised of people who are / have demonstrated that they are pathological liars – willing to say anything because ‘the ends justifies the means’.

The time to embrace Assad’s opposition was 18 months ago – but this Administration still thought of Assad as a reformer back then. Trebling down on mistakes does not make one right.

Maybe this entire Syria fiasco is an attempt to divert attention from another crappy jobs report:

The Labor Department’s snapshot of the job market in August had several discouraging details underneath a relatively average headline number, including a large drop in the share of Americans who are either working or looking for work. This measure, known as the labor force participation rate, was at its lowest level since 1978.

Earlier estimates of job growth in July and June were also revised sharply downward, and hiring over the summer months was largely driven by low-wage sectors like retail, food services and health care (NYT).

Apparently, minority employment fared extremely badly. I will avoid dwelling on the irony.

Raquel Pinkbullet on September 6, 2013 at 5:39 PM

The past couple of months, I have linked videos of:

rebel cutting out and nibbling on a human heart of a dead soldier
rebels stopping civilian truck drivers and shooting them in the head
rebels shooting dead civilian civil service workers in town square

All this stuff I found thru secular egyptian twitter feeds. A lot of them believe that the rebels are connected with MB. Anyway, regardless of who they are connected with, these are all war crimes and I have just mentioned a few. I don’t see how there war crimes are any less of a crime than Assad’s.

Tell you what, before we call them ‘moderate’ can we at least ask to see what their plan for governing Syria is?

Does it involve multi-level republican checks and balances between differing parts of government and between provincial and national government?

If not, if all power is going to reside in the National government, then that is not moderate: it is Statist and unwilling to let local people take care of local affairs.

So, they’ve had months to draw up that baby. Do they have one? Are they LIVING BY IT like the Founders did with the Articles of Confederation? Or can’t they even figure out WHAT THEY WANT AFTERWARDS?

Meanwhile, in other “moderation” news, one of the key U.S. spokesmen for Syria’s main opposition group has been suspected of terrorism links since the mid-90s. He used to visit U.S. military bases to discuss Islam but was suspended after the Fort Hood massacre and investigated. The military hasn’t released the result of the investigation. The suspension remains in effect.

It used to pass as just carelessness, gullibility, or even stupidity. But at this point, when you actively invite charlie inside of the wire, it’s more like treason. Same goes for all the CAIR and ISNA backed “sensitivity” lecturers that infest our military and FBI/police/whatever training.

Then reveal yourself hero. To me you’re a coward too scared to go fight his own countries war so you’re pushing for US intervention.

Boy, when SofS Ketchup sees this, he’ll be telling us that it’ll only get worse unless we give them what they want, which is probably for the Marines to take out Assad and the Syrian army, tidy the place up a bit, and leave a pile of cash and weaponry for the rebels to set up a new Islamic government in tight with al Qaeda.

It makes you wonder why Facebook thinks that supporting political groups is a good idea. Social networking is their business mission, not fomenting actual revolution, violence and civil war. They can hardly pretend to be agnostic when they are enabling combatants.

At least the phone companies can’t really tell what their service is being used for, but Facebook and Google can.

Some of their snotty young executives may think they are pivotal to societal change, and only mean well, but it’s a short step from poodle-of-the-president to top-of-the-enemies list.

Are Facebook stockholders fully aware that they are supporting this activism?
