Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads; Update: Kerry making the full Ginsburg

posted at 8:01 am on September 1, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

If Syria got short shrift in last week’s Sunday talkfests, it’s occupying nearly every square inch of the territory this week.  So far, only Fox News Sunday seems to be giving any ground on other issues, with a tête à tête between Rep. Pete King and former CIA covert agent Mike Baker on intelligence leaks and the developments this week on the Edward Snowden case. CNN’s State of the Union will have a roundtable discussion on whether Bill Clinton can save ObamaCare, for some reason. Otherwise, it’s all Syria all morning long with both featured guests and roundtables.  The most potent combination to watch will probably be Senators Jack Reed and Jim Inhofe on Fox, but Bob Menendez vs Rand Paul on Meet the Press might have some fireworks, too.

By the way, look at the list below and see how many White House figures or current DoD officials are making the rounds.  That number would be zero, barring any last-minute changes.  Very odd, considering the proximity of military action in a brand-new theater for American troops. John Podhoretz called this a classic Labor Day pre-tape problem:

It would still have been a good platform to make their case to the American people. The shows seem to have no problem getting others in Washington to talk about the issue, pre-taped or not.  And Jim Geraghty has a fine suggestion for an admin official:

Update, 9/1: In a late change to all of the listings below, Yahoo says John Kerry will make the full Ginsburg today.

  • ABC’s This Week: Former Joint Chiefs of Staff Vice Chair Gen. James Cartwright USMC (Ret.), Vali Nasr, Terry Moran, Martha Raddatz on Syria; roundtable with James Carville and Mary Matalin, Peggy Noonan, and Tavis Smiley.
  • CBS’ Face The Nation: Sen. John McCain, Sen. Saxby Chambliss, Sen. Tim Kaine, Anthony Cordesman
  • CNN’s State of the Union: Reps. Eliot Engel, Scott Rigell, Chris Murphy; Gen. Anthony Zinni (ret); roundtable with Donna Brazil, David Frum, Cornel Belcher and Ross Douthat (via Politico)
  • Fox News Sunday: Sen Jack Reed (D-RI) and Sen James Inhofe (R-OK); Rep. Pete King and former CIA Covert Operations Officer Mike Baker; roundtable with Gen. Jack Keane, former Senator Joe Lieberman, Jennifer Rubin, Charles Lane
  • NBC’s Meet the Press: Sen. Robert Menendez, Sen. Rand Paul; Ann Curry; roundtable with William Kristol, Gwen Ifill, Eugene Robinson, BBC News anchor Katty Kay.

I’m watching Chicago Sun-Times Obama buttlicker extraordinaire Lynn Sweet saying this vote will “define” people and daring people to oppose Obama and not realizing the irony and refusing to say what everyone there on that MSNBC panel knows: Senator Obama would of course have voted against President Obama. MSNBC viewing is quite amusing: who knew Brit ex-Keith Olbermann lapdog RIchard Wolffe was such a war monger??!!

KOOLAID2 on September 1, 2013 at 8:20 AM

Expect to see the president’s defendants rampaging the Sunday shows.

This is an imperial president who hasn’t gone to Congress for much that is on his agenda. He is constantly contravening Congressional authority on the PPACA, had to be told be a court to remove illegal appointees and as late as last week passed Executive Orders on firearms that usurp congressional powers.

Yet we are now to believe his motives are pure in Syria? Nonsense.

Mr. Obama foolishly rushed headlong into this situation because it hurts his personal credibility. It displays how empty, damaging and unwise his policies have been, and how ridiculous his loose talk and leaking of battle plans was.

Now as he stands alone as other world leaders imperialistic ambitions have been thwarted by democratic process, Mr. Obama needs one thing; his signature scapegoat.

Mr. Obama doesn’t want approval. He wants someone to blame for inaction on “crisis” with no casus belli, that he created with a loss of prestige, respect and status for our nation.

Marcus Traianus on September 1, 2013 at 8:21 AM

This “Up” show on MSNBC is quite funny.
“You know, Nancy Pelosi was wavering and now is one-hundred percent and Harry Reid was wavering earlier this week and is now one-hundred percent……”

What BS. As Rush says, it’s all about Obama, every time.

Why is it OUR business if the Syrians are killing other radical Syrians?

We don’t intervene in Planned Parenthood and other abortion offices when they use chemical weapons, in the womb, on over 1,000,000 helpless unborn babies?

Permit me to repeat a comment from another thread here:

You know, since Russia has a vested interest in supporting Assad because of agreements with Syria to build a gas pipeline and to secure a warm-water port of consequence, then why not have the Russians root out the Muslim “rebel” enablers, who may themselves be capable of delivering gas/chemical attacks?

Why are we blowing funds and jeopardizing our military assets–troops and materiel— to insert ourselves in a civil war, which is, in fact, a proxy war for hegemony in the ME? Let the Russians and the rest of the Arab coalition waste their treauries in order to be king of the hill.

At least, Assad is not asserting Islamic expansion as he holds on to power.

Russia is willing to engage in a proxy struggle for power in order to expand its energy sources. Unfortunately for us, we have a “president” who will not allow us to develop and/or export our own energy.

In stunning contrast, there are 26 liberal Democrats and a number of presumably non-political military commenters.

Jim Inhofe is on a crusade. I have received four emails asking for money to defund obamacare. Of course, the Oklahoma lawsuit might also do it, unless the librul chief justice roberts kills it. I like the suggestion that everybody vote present on bombing Syria, but with the RINO, ever so proper leadershit, it will never happen.

Obama’s sycophants have already figured out that the American people don’t want a war in Syria, they told him to go to Congress and he will get a “no” vote and can easily back out. Don’t forget, according to these dirtballs in Washington Syrians are just undocumented Americans. Barky and Rubio plan on issuing American citizenship to all Syrians in the next week. Why should they suffer just because they don’t abut the US and have the opportunity to force themselves on our territory. If the Syrians can’t breach the American border to force Barky and Rubio to make them citizens then Barky and Rubio will have to breach the American border to issue them citizenships – as is the “right” of all the undocumented Americans in the world …meaning everybody.

This latest move will destroy his presidency completely.

His plan is to get the GOP to say “no”, then blame everything on them. However, it was not the GOP who mobilized and deployed 6 naval ships off the coast of Syria. It was not the GOP who announced that Syria was to be bombed. It was not the GOP who got schooled by Putin and rebuffed by our closest allies.

Kerry is the ‘Professor Irwin Corey’ of State. He talks and talks and makes no sense.

This is Obama’s plan. Make no mistake. Let me be clear. He made a screw up of massive proportions and will now try to pin it on Congress.

What. A. Spineless. Douche. Bag.

One Parliament rebuffed David Cameron’s plan on Syria Obama going to Congress was a predictable as the sun coming up in the East every morning. Nothing’s more important to President Present than to make sure he can never get blamed for anything bad involving a controversial issue, while leaving an opening for other Democrats and the big media to give Obama all the credit when something good happens.

Boehner needs to pass a resolution neither approving nor disapproving of the Syrian options, but leaving the matter “…up to the discretion of the president.” It would be a partial skirting of Congress’ duty to authorize any military action, but Obama never would have gone to Congress if the Brits had voted to attack Syria and given him the cover to blame someone else if things go wrong. Unless the House Republicans throw this back in the White House’s lap, anything that goes wrong in Syria from now until the end of Obama’s term will be spun by the White House, other Dems and the big media as Boehner’s fault, and he’s an idiot if he can’t see it coming from a mile away down Pennsylvania Avenue.

Where is the coverage of Rubio getting heckled and booed?

Deep in the Hotair closet with the Lane, Shorty, and Georgia acts of savagery.

The Rubio coverage has sort of dropped off the radar, but I don’t sense a policy…just happenstance. August recess…out of sight, out of mind.

But I very much sense a policy of not talking about the outrageous black-on-everyone violence wave of the past couple years. Blacks murdering blacks in Chicago; roving gangs of black teens attacking decent citizens everywhere in the U.S. where these verminous cowards gather in groups of 10 or more; black teens murdering children and old people; black monsters raping women young and old.

I look forward to a piece by Ed or Allah explaining why this cultural phenomenon is either not newsworthy or is not a cultural phenomenon. Seems pretty phenomenal to me.

Derbyshire was right.

Yo…. purple lips Jug Ears

Unprovoked military aggression is a war crime under international law. That is completely clear. There are no ifs or buts about it.
