Video: UN inspectors leave Syria

posted at 10:01 am on August 31, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Late yesterday, the UN announced that it would accelerate the departure schedule for its inspection team on the ground in Damascus by three hours, from 7 am Saturday morning to 4 am. Most took this as a signal that American strikes on the Syrian army would shortly follow, and NBC News reports that US assets have already been positioned for military action. Even the missiles have their targets loaded in their guidance systems. All that’s needed now is the order:

Visit NBCNews.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

According to CBS News, we could be waiting a while. Russia now wants the Obama administration to wait for next week’s G-20 meeting to discuss further what UN inspectors found:

The last of the U.N. weapons inspection team pulled out of Syria before dawn Saturday after four days of field work visiting the suburbs of Damascus hit by what appears to have been chemical strikes on Aug. 21, CBS News correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reported on “CBS This Morning: Saturday.

The samples they gathered from victims of the attack, as well as water, soil and shrapnel, will now be sent to European laboratories for analysis. The results, and the inspectors’ final report, could take as long as two weeks.

But international politics are moving faster than that. On Saturday, Syria’s international ally, Russia, weighed in. President Vladimir Putin asked the U.S. to refrain from carrying out any strikes on Syria and suggested that next week’s G20 meeting would be a good venue for international discussion on what to do.

Putin said that the idea that the Syrian government would use chemical weapons when it was already winning the war was utter nonsense.

It’s been more than 12 hours since the UN inspectors have left, but still a few hours before the sun sets. One would expect the strike to come in darkness, so the clock will really start ticking at sunset, which comes at 7:01 local time, or noon ET. With Congress coming back in just a few days, the longer Obama waits, the fewer excuses he has to reject Congressional engagement and authorization before striking. If the sun sets in Washington without a strike, it may be quite a while before anything significant happens in the Mediterranean.

What happens after the strike? CBS News interviews Michael O’Hanlon from the Brookings Institute, who believes that Assad will simply absorb the blow and learn his lesson about using chemical weapons. It’s not going to weaken him, however, and while O’Hanlon has a rather sunny view of the results of a one-off attack on the trajectory of the Middle East, he does allow that this might also touch off a regional war. That’s why, O’Hanlon insists, the US and the West need to engage more deeply in the Syrian civil war:

Putin following Obama’s advice: “Never let a crises farce go to waste”

Speaking out for the first time since an alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus on Aug. 21, Putin called on President Obama to find a nonviolent way out of the crisis.

“I would like to address Obama as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate: Before using force in Syria, it would be good to think about future casualties,” Putin told Russian news agencies in Vladivostok during a tour of the country’s flood-stricken Far East.

We’ve got the Russian President openly mocking our President. Way to go Mr. President. Smart power.

Anyone in the military can refuse to obey an unlawful order. They would have to prove it was unlawful in a likely court marshall. It would take minimum an 0-6 (Colonel) or above (most likely a General/Admiral)to refuse a strike of ths magnitude.

A soldier refusing an order from an officer to shoot an unarmed civilian would be easy to defend. A Captain/Admiral refusing an order from the CINC to launch cruise missiles is an entirely different animal.

Is this the real reason behind this threatened attack on Syria?

bluefox on August 31, 2013 at 12:09 PM

Possibly. Lindsey Graham said a few months ago, maybe May or June, that the the US would strike Iran sometime in the fall. I think he said October but I don’t recall the month for certain. Syria is very likely part of that plan.

FloatingRock on August 31, 2013 at 12:49 PM

There is some serious smellage going on here.
Key West Reader on August 31, 2013 at 10:53 AM

Indeed there is. Some of this stuff is just not adding up. I’m suspecting that while this started out as a save-face mission, it has since taken on some other political motives.

petefrt on August 31, 2013 at 12:52 PM

What Country besides Syria has said they would attack Israel if B.O. attacks Syria?

bluefox on August 31, 2013 at 12:09 PM

As horrible as it is, I cannot rule this possibility out.

petefrt on August 31, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Obama is speaking at Syria, finally, at 12:15 p.m. Central.

Here we go.

kingsjester on August 31, 2013 at 12:58 PM

What if the UN investigators tests prove that it was Obama’s Al Qaeda allies, not Assad, that gassed those people in Syria, will Obama launch an attack on his Al Qaeda friends instead? Not a chance. This is all just an excuse to save his Al Qaeda allies that have been losing to Assad, IMO.

In case you haven’t run across it already, John Lott has a pretty good list of Obama’s lawless acts here: http://johnrlott.blogspot.com/search/label/obamalawless

Bluefox, as well…

Now, that is just plain scary…terrifying.

Not that we might go after Iran…but that after effect if this Syrian venture were…accent on were…some sort of feint…a little jab, a tap, to the gut…and while all eyes are on that…a huge roundhouse, a hammer blow, to Teheran…and the mullahs vanish.

OK…what’s so scary about that, coldwarrior, you some kind of pansy or something? Well?

What would be most frightening about that happening, not saying it will happen, but if it did..the most frightening thing to happen would be that well over one-half of the electorate would have NO problem at all allowing Barry to seek and be granted an historic third term…perhaps longer…just rescind that stupid old 22nd Amendment…he’d be hailed in ways not seen since Quintus Arrius was greeted in Rome…remember that scene in Ben Hur?

And then…the street repercussions…can you see it? The aftermath.

All the libs just all happy and dancing, for months and months and months…and conservatives being ostracized, or worse, made illegal, made outlaws…because we were all “wrong” about Barry?

Never underestimate the abilities and intentions of one who has read Machiavelli, and Cloward and Piven and Alynski…never.

On a scale of one to ten of such a thing happening in this Administration?

About a minus 50.

Just food for thought.

Sleep tight. :-)

Graham likes to play both sides of the fence. I can’t believe he’d say the U.S. is going to strike Iran! Unless it’s the “enemy of my enemy is my friend” scenario. This Administration has never been a friend or supporter of the freedom fighters in Iran, so if Graham is right (which I doubt) then there must be another reason. That is my opinion anyway.

I did read it. Zero could have a number of reasons for attacking Syria and that could well be one of them. His closest confidants and he surely hate Israel.

dogsoldier on August 31, 2013 at 1:17 PM

Smells like eau de ValJar.

Key West Reader on August 31, 2013 at 12:19 PM

And Huma….

dogsoldier on August 31, 2013 at 1:18 PM

Anyone in the military can refuse to obey an unlawful order. They would have to prove it was unlawful in a likely court marshall. It would take minimum an 0-6 (Colonel) or above (most likely a General/Admiral)to refuse a strike of ths magnitude.

dddave on August 31, 2013 at 12:06 PM

If they aid and abet an attack of this nature they could be prosecuted as war criminals. There is no Congressional authorization for an attack.

dogsoldier on August 31, 2013 at 1:20 PM

Has Barry ever arrived on time for anything?

Or, do we stop the clocks…like they do in UK, for official functions, because The Sovereign is never late?

coldwarrior on August 31, 2013 at 1:21 PM

Late again…

sandee on August 31, 2013 at 1:26 PM

Well, back in college, this was the point where we could all just get up and walk out of class…the perfesser is late.

Suppose they gave a Presidential announcement and nobody came?

coldwarrior on August 31, 2013 at 1:32 PM

and while all eyes are on that…a huge roundhouse, a hammer blow, to Teheran…and th.e mullahs vanish.coldwarrior on August 31, 2013 at 1:09 PM

I was not thinking along those lines tho. Your scenario is more scary than mine, LOL

I don’t think attacking Iran would happen, but if it did, the results imo would not be what you described. We need to keep in mind that the U.S. has a lot more enemies than friends in this world.

My concern and I’m sure everyone else’s that is awake is why Syria and why now. There is clearly a reason that is not being stated, since we have no proof of which side used chemical weapons nor even IF they were used.

bluefox on August 31, 2013 at 1:34 PM

According to Agence-France-Press…Obama will not announce imminent military action .

Barry probably read the polling and commentary last night…so Barry will be out there shilling selling hawking, yea, hawking, his product.

Being prompt…on time for yet another Obama lecture…doesn’t really matter, does it?

coldwarrior on August 31, 2013 at 1:37 PM

FloatingRock on August 31, 2013 at 1:00 PM

I agree with that. However, something tells me there is more to this than meets the eye right now.

This Administration wasn’t/isn’t concerned about the MB killing the Coptic Christians so there is no basis for moral outrage concerning Syria. And keep in mind there was/still is proof of that in Egypt.
