Video: Chicago makes sex-ed mandatory for kindergarteners

posted at 2:51 pm on August 30, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Has Chicago solved all of its other educational issues?  We’ll get back to that in a moment, but that must be what the Chicago Public School District believes.  Starting this year, kindergarten classes must carve out 30 minutes a month for sex-education classes, and the local CBS affiliate reports that parents aren’t exactly thrilled:

CPS emphasizes that the sex-ed effort is aimed at protecting children from abuse:

CPS insists the curriculum will use language children understand and focus on topics like bullying, correct names for external body parts and the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching.

“As you identify body parts, you talk about should you be touched here or not.,” said Stephanie Whyte, the CPS Chief Health Officer. “And if someone touches you, and it’s uncomfortable, you should tell a trusted adult.”

“I’m OK with it,” said parent Ayesha Ahmad. “I’d like to believe it’s not necessary, but I think our culture dictates you can’t start early enough.”

But that’s not quite all that will be taught in these classes.  Besides anatomically-correct nomenclature and a heads-up on identifying abuse, kindergarteners will also get taught the prevailing values of the school system about family structures:

Students will also take a look at the different family structures that exist in today’s society.

“Whether that means there’s two moms at home, everyone’s home life is different, and we introduce the fact that we all have a diverse background, “ said Whyte

That’s a lesson some conservative organizations oppose.

This brings up at least two big issue. First, children of this age aren’t going to have the sophistication to process this kind of instruction and compare it to the value systems which families use in their own homes.  That’s the kind of issue that mothers and fathers should address with their children when they reach the appropriate age, not for schools to dictate as soon as they get kids in their clutches. Furthermore, when parents conflict with the teachers on this point, that will undermine the authority and credibility of the teachers, at the most formative age possible.  There simply isn’t a need to address this at the kindergarten stage.

Second, this shows why public schools are failing to educate students, especially in Chicago.  Just this year, after CPS aligned its standardized tests to the actual outcomes of grade-level reading and arithmetic, Chicago parents learned that only 52.5% of students between the 3rd and 8th grades could pass that test:

The number of Chicago Public Schools students that met state standards on the Illinois Standards Achievement Test plummeted this year because officials raised the bar for what it takes to pass.

Only 52.5 percent of 3rd through 8thgraders met or exceeded reading and math standards — nearly a 22 point drop from last year. But officials said the new test scores are a more accurate portrait of the performance of the city’s public school students and noted that 65 percent of schools actually showed progress.

Since the state decided in January to raise the cutoff scores for the Illinois Standards Achievement Test to get schools ready for the more rigorous Common Core curriculum, districts have been warning parents not to be shocked by the expected drop in test scores. Chicago is the first district in Illinois to release its scores, showing the steepness of that drop. The Illinois State Board of Education is expected to release statewide test data in October.

At CPS, the number of students meeting or exceeding state standards went down from 74.2 percent last year to 52.5 percent this year.

CPS told parents not to worry, because it didn’t mean that their children were performing any worse than they had been before, but just that they’d raised the testing bar to … expectations of grade-level performance. That’s more of an indictment of the tests CPS used in the past, and its consistent level of incompetence.  And this new effort is a good example of why only half of CPS students can perform at grade level — because school districts are more concerned with social norming than they are with actually educating children.

Schools should focus on education. Value formation is best left to the parents.

I’m in total agreement that schools shouldn’t be teaching values, but if they can opt out is it still mandatory?

It would be far more valuable to teach the kindergartners of Chicago proper gun safety and have them get their CCL’s upon completion of the gun safety course. It would adequately prepare them for the remainder of their public school tenure.

NOMOBO on August 30, 2013 at 3:02 PM

Teachers can’t legally get with five-year-olds, but it’s okay if they get with each other. And there are documented cases of it happening, right in the classroom with the teacher present. Court cases prove that.

Liberals are so messed up. They think that if you teach a child ‘the right way’, the child will avoid the experience. I call shenanigans! Anyone who has raised children will tell you that once you teach a child something he never before thought about/considered, he’s going to try learning on his own what it’s all about.

Protection or indoctrination?

I assume this is a rhetorical question because we all know the purpose is indoctrination with protection merely being the cover.

(BTW, IMHO kindergarten isn’t even really necessary for children).

(CNSNews.com) – The Chicago Public Schools this year are mandating that the district’s kindergarten classes include sex education, fulfilling a proposal President Barack Obama supported in 2003 when he served in the Illinois state senate and later defended when he ran for president in the 2008 election cycle.

Once the five-year-olds learn about this, and play together but get nowhere, it’s a sure bet there are teachers who ‘can do it better’.

Playing ‘doctor’ in my time, and ‘show me yours and I’ll show mine’, got a spanking and long talk from Mom and Dad when we got caught. More, we knew we shouldn’t play those games, either by upbringing or natural intuition.

Liberals endlessly seek to thwart what is innate in children, trying to make them and the rest of the world conform to their demented baseness.

To be indoctrinated into truly mainstreaming homosexuality, including gay marriage, kids need to learn about sex early on. Sex between two men never made any sense to me, but that’s because it wasn’t explained to me in grade school. They’ll correct for this generation of young people.

That’s a lesson some conservative organizations oppose.

Why do conservatives oppose telling kindergarten the fact that some households have two moms and two dads. Children normally take this news with about as much interest as the news that the sky is blue. What do conservatives think happens to a kindergartner who is taught that. Truly, I am curious.

libfreeordie on August 30, 2013 at 3:22 PM

Yeah, I live in Chicago. They should worry about the violence in schools. Last month I saw a guy point a gun at a group of teens. I called 911 with the plate and make of the car. 911 dispatcher: “Okay, will let them know.” Never heard a thing from the cops. That’s life in Chicago… but on the plus side they’ve repaved almost every street in the city with those stimulus dollars y’all gave to us.

The headline was enough. I won’t read the rest.

Liberals will say we some how ‘fear sex ed’. That’s bullsnot.

It’s not about education here. It’s about the timing of it. Five-year-olds should NOT be forced into adult matters so directly when they aren’t ready for it.

Liberals do not grasp that children are NOT ‘little adults’. that’s why their children. They need a long time of proper nurturing and good parenting.

Liberals do not grasp that truth. Many of such advocates are either homosexual or have had multiple abortions.

What such such people possibly know about being a good parent?

The point of indoctrination at a young age is not to instill some kind of “tolerance” but to let them know that if they think differently they’re bad.

It also begins the process where eventually they’ll begin to self censor … being afraid to say anything that doesn’t comply with liberal dogma. That’s the entire point of political correctness … to force people to be silent for fear of attack.

Obama Supporter/Anti-Fracking Activist and “Grandmother Superhero” Supports Parental Pedophilia

Washington Free Beacon reported:

Vera Scroggins, an outspoken anti-hydraulic fracturing activist from Pennsylvania and a director of Citizens for Clean Water, made the remarks in emails to a Yahoo group in 2001.

“Are there cultures that mothers or fathers pleasure their children and teenagers sexually or genitally and also possibly initiate them into sexual expression at some point?” Scroggins asked in one message.

“I have had intuitive thoughts that such would be a healthy way for parents to interact with their children and introduce their children to sensual/sexual pleasure and bonding and loving practices,” Scroggins said.

“Who better to do it, than the parents first?” she added.

Scroggins posted those and other controversial comments on sexuality in a Yahoo group called “Peacelist.”

The group says it is “dedicated to the advancement of the human species by restoring its natural peacefulness, through the means of affectionate parenting and sexual freedom.”

It was moderated by German author and deputy director of the Wikimedia Foundation Erik Möller, who advocated “the importance of ‘Mothering’ and of youth affectional sexual relationships for peaceful and loving behaviors.”

In 2008 Erik Moller publicly defended pedophilia and wrote a book called “Children Are Pornography”. Moller cites Greek history to defend his support of pedophilia and was caught removing child pornography pictures from his website.

To add to the creepiness of this story, Scroggins is a publicly devoted grandmother and Pennsylvania libs refer to her as the “Grandmother Superhero“.

I understand you may, and probably do, disagree with this. But consider — what if you’re wrong? Would you just ponder that for a moment? If you’re wrong, then you’re supporting damaging young children. Do you understand that? Are you so smug in your self-righteousness that that gives you no pause at all?

Why do Progressives defend child molesting teachers like Neal Erickson and bomb the home of his victim?

Bible-free zone? Definitely not.

Battering-ram free zone? Absolutely not.

In any event, kindergarten is too soon to teach anything related to sex…it’s a time for adjusting into school life, making friends, being social, and learning how to tie your shoes…and of course, nap time. 5th or 6th grade would be better for sex ed, which really should be handled by parents anyway.

The question of mainstreaming acceptance of the homosexual sex act as normal, even desirable, as an expression of love.

The depths of stupidity and sheep-like mentality betrayed by this quote is beyond my ability to comprehend or flail at with words. Good God, people, this country is so fricking doomed.

Really? Why do you disagree with physiology? The anus is not designed to handle anal sex. Yes hetero’s and homo’s participate in anal sex but that doesn’t change the underlying science or make it normal.

Male-female genital sex is normal. “Gay” sex is not. You know this. Regardless of the legitimacy of feelings of romantic love of one man towards another — I’m not even going to get into that. You KNOW male-male sex isn’t normal, and is largely responsible for the AIDS epidemic in the US. And to the extent we can discourage the formation of homosexuality, or at least not encourage it, we should, if for that reason alone.

To say that since the feeling of same sex love is legitimate, that means the same sex sex act is legitimate … you know that’s not just not so. You may WANT it to be true. It may feel true to you. I don’t doubt that. But as conservatives, we, supposedly, can use our minds, and just because something feels right, doesn’t mean that it is.

Gay stuff often involves things a straight man’s wife wouldn’t want to do unless the guy talks her into it.

That says a lot to me.
