NBC/WSJ poll: 79% say Obama needs Congressional approval on Syria strike

posted at 9:21 am on August 30, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Finally, the White House has a poll showing at least a roughly even split on taking action against Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad for using chemical weapons.  According to a new NBC/Wall Street Journal poll, 50% oppose military action, but that changes to 50% approval if only long-range missiles are used rather than sorties using pilots.  However, almost eight in ten believe that Barack Obama has to get authorization from Congress before ordering any kind of military action at all:

In this new NBC poll, 50 percent of respondents oppose the United States taking military action in response to Syria’s use of chemical weapons, compared with 42 percent who support it.

However, those numbers flip when the military action is defined to mean launching cruise missiles from naval warships – 50 percent favor it, while 44 percent oppose it.

And 58 percent agree with the statement that the use of chemical weapons by any country violates a “red line” that requires a significant U.S. response, including the possibility of U.S. action.

Still, a whopping 79 percent of respondents – including nearly seven-in-10 Democrats and 90 percent of Republicans – say the president should be required to receive congressional approval before taking any action.

On top of that, only 21% are buying Obama’s argument that an attack on Assad is in the US’ national interest, and more people say it will make the situation worse for Syrian civilians (41%) than improve their lot (27%).  Both of these measures have a large group of respondents unsure of their position (45% on American interests, for instance), so Obama has some room to improve his standing.  Since Obama has decided — at least so far — not to address the American people on launching a war, though, the opportunities to make converts out of the unsure will be few, let alone the opposed.

Furthermore, even this level of enthusiasm may be an outlier. A Huffington Post/YouGov poll earlier this week put support for air strikes at 25%, with 41% opposed.  The Christian Science Monitor/TIPP poll this week put opposition in the majority, 52% to 39% supporting air strikes.  The Monitor and Newsmax also reference an earlier Reuters/Ipsos poll putting opposition at 60%.  Pushing forward on a military action this unpopular without seeking Congressional approval would be a political disaster for Obama, even if it turns out not to be an strategic disaster, a la Libya.

Speaking of disasters, the rest of the NBC/WSJ poll is bad news for the White House, too.  As Obama prepares to take the nation to war, he’s hit his lowest approval rating in this series since November 2011 at 44%.  Obama also hit his lowest approval rating in foreign policy ever at 41/49. Specifically on Syria, he has an approval/disapproval rating of just 35/44. This is not a President with a mandate to act unilaterally on foreign policy, let alone taking the nation to war.

So, let me let me try to understand this…when Dubya stood up and defended our staunchest ally, Israel, in front of those who would destroy God’s Chosen People in a heartbeat, that was “cowboy diplomacy”.
But, when The Manchurian President refuses to justify to the American People, an unjustifiable military operation, which will place our Brightest and Best in harm’s way, in order to set up a possible regime change, so that his Radical Muslim”Allies” can rise to Power, , that’s not “cowboy diplomacy”, that’s “protecting the citizens of Syria”.

Sure, Scooter. And September 11, 2001, was not the largest Terrorist Attack ever perpetrated on American Soil…it was the world’s largest “Man-Caused Disaster”.

Americans understand. There are no “Good Guys” in this Civil War.

Yes. The other thing that has to be considered is the the term “cowboy” was an insult because Bush was a Texas rancher and rode horses. To the average elite he was a cowboy. The other thing you have to understand is that for the left a leftest can do no wrong. Their whole, “Either you are with us or you are against us.” meme for Bush is exactly how they think and act. Let’s be clear hear. Syrians are going to die because Obama’s ego has been bruised. He is the kid that got teased on the playground so he went home and returned with his daddy’s gun. But in this case the gun is the United States Navy.

The filthy lazy thin-skinned rat is not making the case that he wants to bomb Syria for regional stability, a compelling humanitarian need, or anything else. Assad has offended Obama so people have to die. They simply have to.

And of all this silly talk that he’s going it alone? Not so! He has France- who have made leading from behind an art form.

Yeah, remember when Clinton tried to invoke the Soldiers Sailors Relief Act to avoid testifying? The law was enacted so that military in combat zones aren’t forced back home for civil matters and Clinton, as CINC, tried to use it to avoid admitting under oath that he went down on an intern and perjured himself.

The thin-skinned rat isn’t even that transparently dishonest. He’s itching to kill Syrians and nobody or nothing is going to stop him from doing it. He drew a red line, Assad ignored it for the bluster that it was, so people are going to die. Obama’s ego is really that sensitive.

You know, for the longest time after seeing that movie I had thought he said “badgers” and I didn’t understand why it was supposed to be funny. Of course I was most likely high when I saw it. Sex and drugs and rock n roll. Those were the days that in retrospect I wouldn’t want to repeat. In the movie “Airplane” there are a couple of nice looking old folks reminiscing of the old days. It goes from the romantic to being stoned and the guy thinking he could fly and jumping off a building. It cracks my wife and I up because we relate to it. I wonder what my hard core conservative, anti-drug and drinking kids would think of mom and dad’s younger days. I know my wife has had to stop herself from telling stories of the old days when she gets talking to my daughter.

Bush, Cheney and the others were pardoned from their “war crimes” by Holder and O’bama last week.

Obama DOJ Asks Court to Grant Immunity to George W. Bush For Iraq War

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., (Aug. 20, 2013) — In court papers filed today, the United States Department of Justice requested that George W. Bush, Richard Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Colin Powell, Condoleezza Rice and Paul Wolfowitz be granted procedural immunity in a case alleging that they planned and waged the Iraq War in violation of international law.

Plaintiff Sundus Shaker Saleh, an Iraqi single mother and refugee now living in Jordan, filed a complaint in March 2013 in San Francisco federal court alleging that the planning and waging of the war constituted a “crime of aggression” against Iraq, a legal theory that was used by the Nuremberg Tribunal to convict Nazi war criminals after World War II.

“The DOJ claims that in planning and waging the Iraq War, ex-President Bush and key members of his Administration were acting within the legitimate scope of their employment and are thus immune from suit,” chief counsel Inder Comar of Comar Law said.

The “Westfall Act certification,” submitted pursuant to the Westfall Act of 1988, permits the Attorney General, at his or her discretion, to substitute the United States as the defendant and essentially grant absolute immunity to government employees for actions taken within the scope of their employment.

Funny how the Democrat Media has ignored this story over the past 10 days. Wonder why?

Obama in 2012: Taking ‘military action unilaterally’ in Syria would be ‘mistake’

Despite George W. Bush enlisting a coalition of 49 countries, including America’s greatest military ally Great Britain, for his 2003 invasion of Iraq, he was repeatedly derided by the media and Democrats for acting unilaterally. In contrast, President Obama will likely not only not receive U.N. Security Council or congressional approval if he follows through with his threat to strike Syria’s Assad regime, but it appears even Great Britain will not join America in its military action.

Obama really is a stuttering clusterstook of a miserable failure.

And you know what is really damning? If people had a modicum of knowledge about this man, they could have voted accordingly. This is a raging indictment of the ignorant American electorate. What a collection of certifiable dumbarses.

Now Blazing Saddles used the word “badges” as a spoof of Treasure of the Sierra Madre which also used “badges”. That’s my useless movie trivia for the day.

The US isn’t in a bind. Captain Kickass’s ego is bruised. People are going to die because of a stupid lazy thin-skinned bastard. Presdidents of the United States don’t draw lines in the sand like Muammar Gaddafi. They wait until something happens and respond accordingly.

If Obama bypasses the Congress this time, impeachment then becomes a necessary reality!

In the case of this President is that it will never happen. Unlike the Republican elders, Senator Barry Goldwater, Senator Hugh Scott, and House Minority Leader John Rhodes, who went to President Richard Nixon on 7 August 1974 and told him to resign or he would be impeached, convicted, and removed from office, there are no counterparts on the Democrats’ side. Hell, it took 14 victims before Maerose Prizzi FINALLY called for Filthy Filner’s resignation and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz wouldn’t even comment on Anthony ‘Have you seen my weiner, lately?’ Weiner saying, ‘We can’t be weighing in on every single race.’

I’ll save the reader the LITANY of statements made by both Pelosi and DWS on a single race involving one Mark Foley.

More importantly, lily-white American Gothic, he, who hears voices of Mitt Romney not paying taxes and wonders whether Senator Tim Scott’s opposition to Obamacare is based on race, controls the Senate. No Senate leader, who once referred to Obama as a ‘light-skinned African-American with no N3gro dialect, unless he wanted to have one’ is going to the White House to tell the first black President anything other than ‘I’ve got your back and keep doing what you’re doing no matter how unconstitutional and how many courts slap you down.’1

Bear in mind, the Republican had 55 seats in the Senate in 1999. On PERJURY – ostensibly, the easiest case against President Clinton – they could only manage to get 45 votes to convict. On the other charge, OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE, 50 Senators voted to convict and remove.

Not one, single Democrat in the Senate voted to convict and remove Bill ‘I did not have sex with that woman, Ms Lewinsky….Well, yes, I did, but now I have to get back to work for the American people’ Clinton. Both votes fell far short of the necessary 67 to convict and remove.

Toni Morrison may have dubbed William Jefferson Clinton ‘The First Black President,’ but, luv, he had nothing on Barack Hussein Obama, who has been called ‘The First Black (Gay) President.’ Never. You. Mind. Dr Cornel West, who called him ‘The First Bi-Racial President of the United States.’

Regardless of what one calls him, unless President Barack Hussein Obama is found in bed with a dead girl, a live boy, AND SLITTING THE THROATS OF MICHELLE, SASHA, AND MALIA on live television, the Democrats in the Senate will NEVER, EVER, EVAH vote to impeach, convict and remove him.

But, in 1,240 days from now, he’s going to either walk out of the White House of his on volition or he shall be carried out…

Americans don’t do dictators.

If you want to get ALL Democrats to impeach, convict and remove a sitting Supreme Court Justice or President, make him Clarence Thomas or Tim Scott.

1: As President Andrew Jackson said, in the wake of Chief Justice John Marshall’s decision in Worcester v Georgia wherein he voided the criminal conviction of Worcester for having been on Indian land and held that the states have no authority on such lands, ‘Well, John Marshall has made his decision. Now, let him enforce it.’

Despite the full fire and brimstone of President Jackson, within three months, the State of Georgia had capitulated and the rest of the Union followed suit. Of course, the year was 1832, so it did not prevent, in whole, Jackson’s final fury in the Trail of Tears, but it did give some tribes the necessary legal basis upon which to resist this most immoral act from another Democratic tyrant.

PS: Do you know the last Supreme Court nominee placed before the Senate by a Democrat – President Grover Cleveland, in this case – for confirmation that was rejected?

Democrat New York Court of Appeals and former Congressman, Wheeler Hazard Peckham, who was rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate by a vote of 32-41 on 16 February 1894. Only a day earlier, William Hornblower also of New York, was likewise rejected by the Democratic-controlled Senate by a vote of 24-30. No other Democratic nominee for the Supreme Court has been rejected since.

On the other hand, Hoover’s nominee, John J Parker, was rejected by a vote of 39-41; Nixon’s nominees, Clement Haynsworth by a vote of 45-55 and G Harrold Carswell by a vote of 45-51, were rejected; and, Reagan’s nominee, Robert Bork, was rejected by a vote of 42-58. Democrats always protect their own.

Democrats may cheat on their wives, partners, taxes, etc, but they will never do anything to jeopardise their 90% African-American voting bloc.

Reagan only wish he had Obama’s Teflon skin colour.

Let this be a lesson to the super hawks in our own party. It does not matter what your political views are, or how much the media kisses your rear, or how nice you are, if you are for lower taxes or not, abortion, gay marriage, etc., if you involve America in another Islamic Middle Eastern adventure your numbers will drop.

It would be political suicide for a GOP nominee in 2016 to star waxing poetic about wonderful the Iraq War was, or how America needs to get more involved in that part of the world, or bring democracy to the Islamic world. We don’t mind bombing them if they attack us first, or are about to attack us, but otherwise just stay out, and never waste ground troops in that part of the world.

I am not a isolationist. If this was about helping stop North Korea from invading South Korea, or helping Japan ward off a Chinese attack on their soil, I would be first on here cheering for military intervention, but that is Asia, with real allies, which the Middle East is not on both counts.

One thing’s for sure … if The Phoney does go against the will of the people, ignore Congress and strike Syria, it is very unlikely that any of his Muslim Brotherhood (AL QAEDA in disguise) Pals will be damaged, because he has been broadcasting his ‘battle plan’ to the enemy for the last few days

everything that comes out of this lawless corrupt Obama Regime is BULLSCHMIDT, including the incoherent, malevolent, anti-Israel crap known as their *foreign policy*
