Syria: just enough of a strike not to be “mocked”

posted at 10:41 am on August 29, 2013 by Bruce McQuain

The Hill is reporting something that has to go down as perhaps one of the worst justification for limiting a military mission or making an unprovoked attack on another country the world has ever seen:

A U.S. official briefed on the military options being considered by President Obama told the Los Angeles Times that the White House is seeking a strike on Syria “just muscular enough not to get mocked.”

“They are looking at what is just enough to mean something, just enough to be more than symbolic,” the official told the paper, giving credence to similar reports describing a limited military strike in the aftermath of last week’s alleged chemical weapons attack.

NBC News reported earlier this week that the administration would launch three days of missile strikes, while CNN cited a senior administration official saying that the White House wanted to conclude any action before the president departs for the G-20 summit next week.

If, before now, you had any doubt about ego being involved in the Syria mission, you shouldn’t anymore.  This is all about the ego of one man.  And he’s willing to put the men and women of our armed forces in harm’s way in order to service that ego.

Quite simply he shot off his mouth and made a threat, those at whom he aimed his words ignored him and allegedly did what he warned them against, and now he has to back up his threat or look weak.   But, being the political beast he is, he knows a “Bill Clinton and the aspirin factory” sort of response will bring condemnation and mockery.  So he’s decided that he’ll just do enough to escape that sort of mocking condemnation but not enough to actually accomplish his stated goals.  Apparently he thinks he won’t look weak if he does just enough to give the illusion of a real and substantial strike while knowing full well it’s a drop in the bucket of what would really be militarily necessary to back  up his threat or accomplish his goal of deterrence and degradation of Syria’s chemical weapons capability.  I can’t imagine a more unserious approach to this problem than this sort of response portends.

Of course, the reason he’s in the position to begin with is because of his lack of leadership on the world’s stage.  He’s single-handedly managed to reduce the United States to a country that was at least feared and respected by our potential enemies to “paper tiger” status.  Any weakness perceived is a direct result of his inability or refusal to lead.  And now, as his favorite preacher would say, the “chickens are coming home to roost.”  The pity is he’s playing with the lives of members of our armed forces in order to try to look tough.

And besides, he has important things to do.  He has to party down with the G-20 and he wants this distraction with Assad and Syria over by then.  He certainly doesn’t want an active military strike going on when he shows up there.  Think of the protests.  His fragile ego simply isn’t geared to be the focus of angry, sign-waving crowds calling him names.  Don’t forget, he’s a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

A U.S. official briefed on the military options being considered by President Obama told the Los Angeles Times that the White House is seeking a strike on Syria “just muscular enough not to get mocked.”

Because the President keeping street cred is far more important than the people who are going to die as a result of the threat he needlessly made a year ago. A real leader would have kept his mouth shut about options on the table should Syria use chemical weapons against its citizens.

Seriously, when mockery is your big foreign policy concern then you’ve got more wrong than the President’s reputation.

Happy Nomad on August 29, 2013 at 10:47 AM

The Obama Doctrine (study up, future Republican candidates): the President of the United States has the right to dispatch war ships and fire missiles into troublesome foreign countries on his own authority and without consulting Congress — so long as his purpose in doing so is not to actually accomplish anything, but to look tough enough so that Dear Leader is not mocked by the international community as an ineffectual weakling.

Think of the protests. His fragile ego simply isn’t geared to be the focus of angry, sign-waving crowds calling him names. Don’t forget, he’s a Nobel Peace Prize winner.

A Nobel Peace Prize with three notches carved in it.

And his fragile ego is really going to be his Achilles heel. He can’t laugh at himself. He goes on Letterman and says “We don’t have a domestic spying program” which sets him up as a liar when it is disclosed that he does. A leader with less ego could have answered the same question with something like…. With these ears do you really think I need NSA to spy on people?

Face it. People are going to die because Obama drew that red line and his thin skin will not allow him to back down.

Happy Nomad on August 29, 2013 at 10:52 AM

Too late, tinpot, you already are being mocked. Launching a military strike to assuage your ego on being thought of as a wuss means you’re doing it wrong.

Bishop on August 29, 2013 at 10:52 AM

It reminds me of LBJ’s rationale for escalating Vietnam — he didn’t want to be the first president to lose a war. It seemed to me petty, to be just about how LBJ would be remembered, rather than about the propriety of the war itself, and a consideration of lives lost.

But this, on a smaller scale, is worse. It’s pitiful. It’s what we’d expect from Obama. Weak, cowardly. Lack of leadership.

To the endless interventionist supporters, if you want to support the Syrian regime/ or the rebels/Al Queada then first take out your personal check book and write a check with your OWN money. Second, once the check is in the mail, kiss your kids good bye – or bring them – get a flight to Amman, Jordon. Then try to make your way north across the Syrian/ Jordon border. If you make it across the border without being beheaded or raped, then continue north to Damascus, link up with rebels and if you survive that feel free to risk your own lives fighting for the Syrian regime.

I’ve posted this several times but Obama has put the sailors on those four Navy destroyers into harm’s way for no other reason than he is afraid of being mocked. Assad could well attack them. My husband is retired Navy. I remember how happy he and most of the other sailors we knew were when Clinton left office and they didn’t have to bite their tongues when discussing the CinC. He’s extremely happy that he isn’t in now. He (and pretty much any submariner we know) would gladly take Clinton back over Obama.

I suspect their going to use their retention issues to help with the budget, since we all know that the military is the one area where lefties are happy to cut government spending.

With few exceptions, the number of truly moderate / foreign policy conservative (Scoop Jackson) Democrats is down considerably. The Jacobin wing of the party has pushed them out – or used every tool in their arsenal to browbeat them into swearing fealty to the Jacobin wing.

The bulk of the Democrats will support the President regardless of their personal feelings towards his actions as long as he continues to advocate and implement their radical agenda around fundamental change. Party and ideological loyalty trumps all.

Besides, given the growing numbers of LIV, all those Dems have to do is keep promising ‘free stuff’ from the government to earn votes.

Putin (through his flunky) went right for Barry’s soft underbelly with that insult. He knows Barry is obsessed with race and always on the look-out for perceived racial slights (being massively insecure about his own racial identity). Putin also knows Barry is full of conceit (and secret doubts) about his own toughness and his (massively overstated) intelligence. Appears the barb hit its target.

After studying the current situation on the ground in Syria and the alleged chemical weapons attack I can only come to the conclusion that if Assad really did order this attack the only concievable reason could be that he did it because he WANTS Obama to attack him in some limited fashion. It’s the only thing that makes sense from a strategic and tactical standpoint. I don’t know why he owuld want this but perhaps he thinks that such an attack by the west would galvanize the rest of the middle east to come to his aid and take his side in order to fight against the great Satan(s).

It this is true then I am remined of a story from the battle of Gettysburg duringthe American civil war. After the first day of fighting Confederate Generals Lee and Longstreet were standing togeather watching the every growning Federal forces digging in on the high ground of Cemetary Hill. Longstreet advised General Lee that this was the perfect opportunity to move the entire Confederate army around the Union’s left flank and position it on favorable ground between the Union Army and Washington DC, thus forcing the Union to make an ill advised attack. Lee turned to Longstreet in astonishment and said, “General Longstreet, if General Mead is still on that hill tomorrow morning I shall attack him.” To which Longstreet replied, “Sir, if General Mead is still on that hill in the morning it will be because he wants you to attack him, which I believe is a very good reason not to do so.”

Robert E. Lee ignored General Longstreet’s advice and attacked Mead not once but twice in what turned out to be worst mistakes of his entire career. “History repeats itself, first as tragedy second as farce”

The Mockery

Sometimes I laugh—what else can a man do
Who does not know ? This little ego here
Braving the void, this fleck upon the blue,
This filmy wing sounding the starry sphere—
What bold abysmal incongruity,
What joke of the gods to make a mock of me !

I hear you sing, and wonder how you dare.
Too fine for song they are—the tint of the rose,
The touch of a child, love’s beauty and despair,
All the sad furtive exquisiteness that blows,
Like scent of gardens I may never see,
Across my sense to make a mock of me.

That I, this atom infinitesimal,
This chance-blown seed of flesh and fire, that I
Should front the dread immensity, the all,
Shocking the silence with my futile cry—
What dark inscrutable absurdity,
What joke of the gods to make a mock of me!

Many people are underestimating the very fluid dynamics here.

The American people are largely against this strike, especially since the casus belli is not apparent, national interest elusive and the consequences seem to provide a potential for increased risks.

The President has once again painted himself into a corner. The ultimate result will be he looks weak, ineffectual and indecisive. That means it’s time for one of Mr. Obama’s signature moves- deflection.

He will once again use Congress and in particular, Republicans as a foil to his “righteous” ambitions. Never mind, as previously stated, the American people are not interested in this approach.

Mr. Obama’s inability to assume a wise leadership position with Congress that balance his political ambitions with our national interest has resulted in a substantial loss of credibility and prestige for our nation. That ultimately makes the world a more dangerous place for all Americans, something an American President is supposed to prevent.

By substituting his personal ambition, political proclivities and ideological preferences for those of the people he has meant to serve, our nation is a lesser and more dangerous place.

This is simply another example of how far we have fallen as a nation under a feckless, incompetent and self-centered despot.
