Video: If gun control worked, Chicago would be Mayberry

posted at 8:31 am on August 24, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

Here’s a little something to start your weekend off with a bang. Cam Edwards, who many of you already know from Twitter and NRA News fame, was invited to address the Independence Institute’s Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms event last weekend. There was a host of goodness coming out of this address – far too much to be captured in a single transcript – but so very worth your time if you’re looking for some Saturday morning viewing. The title here gives a decent sense to the overall flavor, but let’s just go to the video and a few highlights.

(Disclosure: I have been a guest on Cam’s show, interviewed on 2nd Amendment related topics, but I have never been a paid writer in the organization.)

If gun control worked, Chicago would be Mayberry right now! And Weld County and El Paso County would be Thunderdome! You guys wouldn’t have [Weld County] Sheriff [John] Cooke, you would have Tina Turner and Mel Gibson running around! It would be horrible! But that’s not real life! Real life is gun control not working in Chicago. Real life is gun control failing in Camden, New Jersey and Oakland, California, and a lot of other communities in this country . . .

We are pushing back with the lawsuits, with the phone calls to our legislators, by electing officials and supporting elected officials who listen to us. But we’re also pushing back by being grownups, and by being okay at it. By having hundreds of people show up at a range and fire thousands of shotgun shells . . . and everybody’s okay! And now we’re enjoying cigars and drinks and we’ll all get home safely tonight, right?

Because we can control our lives! We can manage our lives! It’s not too difficult. We’re not perfect. We may eat a little too much dessert every now and then. We may not be able to beat that one bad habit, like smoking cigarettes, whatever. But we’re a heck of a lot more capable than our government gives us credit for, aren’t we?

This was a real stemwinder, and honestly, I don’t have a lot to add to it. I might not have even noticed it were it not for seeing it in Jim Geraghty’s Morning Jolt. (Are you a subscriber, by the way? It’s a daily read for me, even if Jim can’t link to Hot Air for some reason which has never been sufficiently explained.) In any event, here’s your chance to listen to Cam and take off on wherever the discussion leads you.

In case you haven’t heard:

CHICAGO (CBS) – An Illinois state representative has publicly raised the possibility that Chicago police officers might be the ones responsible for the unsolved murders of black youths in Chicago…

“There’s some suspicion – and I don’t want to spread this, but I’m just going to tell you what I’ve been hearing – they suspect maybe the police are killing some of these kids.”

When WBBM asked Davis if she thinks it’s possible that police are killing children, she said, “I don’t know. I don’t know that they are, and I don’t know that they aren’t, since no one’s been arrested. We don’t know who’s doing it.”

Thanks for saving me the time to post that. I was just about off to get the stats.

I used the same argument with leftists before. I even tell them that our low low low rate of gun deaths is actually and probably due to at least many of us being armed.

Then I take out the numbers of black on black killings in our utopian black urban cities, and our rate is as low as just about anything else out there.

Then once I show them that the rates are very low and in the same relatively narrow band, I then mention to them that in the USA, I have freedom, but you don’t in that other country to anywhere near what I have in Omaha, USA.

That ended it on two occasions.

I usually tell them afterwards that….”you just are not into…FACTS. And…you also only want FEEL good, but not really DO good.” The hallmark of the liberal.

Strangely enough, I would think black representatives would be encouraging constituents to appropriately and legally arm themselves against anyone who was seeking to harm their children.

Instead, and amazingly, she seems very much against the 2nd Amendment.

nonpartisan on August 24, 2013 at 9:11 AM

You must live in a city.

I don’t. It’s very rural here. Aside from legitimate sporting and hunting (and there is a lot of it out here), guns are very useful for protection against dangerous or even rabid animals. We have feral pigs, poisonous snakes and even panthers (Mountain Lions). Response time from the local police in case of a crime is pretty chancy. Even with their best efforts, it could be a half hour or more before the first help could arrive. It’s far enough that we carry supplemental insurance to cover being helicoptered out in case of illness or injury.

Why, exactly, do we need to give up our guns for your little utopia?

trigon on August 24, 2013 at 11:33 AM

rogerb on August 24, 2013 at 11:31 AM

If we just passed some more corruption-control laws we could put an end to corrupt politicians.

rrpjr on August 24, 2013 at 11:39 AM

Facts and empirical evidence about this are meaningless to the Left. This is a religion. And not merely a religion, but a sacred personalized embodiment: they ARE the religion. If a leftist were somehow to concede that gun control fails and more guns equal less crime, it wouldn’t be a matter of simply losing an argument — his self-divinity would be shattered. A pillar of the self-righteous ideological edifice would collapse, and put at risk every other pillar and the entire edifice (which is otherwise supported and sustained by self-righteous and extortive falsehoods and emotions).

Leftist can’t be negotiated with. It needs to be crushed. Ransack the temple and rout the false idols and idolatry.

rrpjr on August 24, 2013 at 11:49 AM

Doctrinaire liberals love to point to New York’s gun laws right now as their justification for oppressive regulations, while attacking the police tactics (including the pre-Stop & Frisk under Giuliani) that began cutting the crime rate — they truly think the crime rate went down just because the Boomer generation got older. But come about 2016 or so if New York goes back to one of their normal hack liberal mayors, odds are good the city’s crime rate is going to start looking less like Mayberry and more like Chicago’s, or NYC in the early 1990s.

jon1979 on August 24, 2013 at 9:56 AM

It was amusing, ironic and sad watching so many New Yorkers of all stripes defending stop n’ frisk last week. The Five on Fox was hilarious and just sad. Beckel was the only one outright against stop n’ frisk (but against guns of course) yet all the others who lean right/libertarian all nominally supported stop n’ frisk because they knew what will happen without it. None of them had the guts (or Fox won’t let them stir the pot) to say that maybe NYC should let people own guns.

In Rwanda, 1994, more than 500,000 Tsutsis were hacked to death by machetes.

Thank God those Tsutsis didn’t have guns or it could have been much worse. Right, nonpartisan? Because before the invention of firearms suitable for personal protection, there was NO murder and NO violent crime, right? Knives and hammers and spears and arrows were all completely peaceful inventions, weren’t they?

I don’t like to devolve to ad-hominems, but, seriously: What do you use for brains? If the criminals committing violent crimes were “committed enough to eliminate all [their] guns”, then they wouldn’t be criminals in the first place. So your “plan”, such as it is, is 100% guaranteed to fail. In fact, it’s 100% guaranteed to make things worse since the only possible result is to leave those who abuse firearms with a monopoly of force, and remove from their intended victims the ability to stop or deter them.

Socratease on August 24, 2013 at 12:41 PM

A better idea is to just stop calling them “guns.” Voila! Problem solved.

Christien on August 24, 2013 at 12:46 PM

jazz, gun control would work if we were committed enough to eliminate all guns. No one’s life has ever been saved by a signal flare gun, and we all know how many people are murdered annually when somebody shoots them with a starter’s pistol when they are competing in a race. And millions of kids are killed in cold blood with water guns every year.

The only possible way gun control would work is if the feds were as committed to it as Communist nations. Law enforced to the point that the Joe on the street is in walking terror that he might possibly break it; and done by a COMPULSORY citizen-snitch program.

The first piece of equipment you pack in your go bag should be a signal device. With a proper signal device, you can summon help in remote locations should you become injured or need assistance. If you encounter a dangerous situation where you can warn others, a good signal device can get the job done and mean saving lives.

Our most popular signal device is the flare gun which can be used to signal during day and night conditions. Most people only think of 26.5mm flares for night time signaling, but with smoke flares they work great during daylight. Proper flare selection should include parachute flares for night time signaling and smoke flares for day time use.

And better yet, how the getalife do you propose paying for all of the additional law enforcement manpower that would be required to do this, with absolutely no guarantee of 100% success?

Why do you need to go out after dark. If you would just stayed in then you wouldn’t need a flashlight. In case of a power outage just stay where you are. At the most you will have to sit or lie in the dark for 10-12 hours. No reason to be moving about in the dark. After all the sun will eventually come up and provide you with some light.

Something similar to that actually worked very well in Richmond Va. Project Exile. If you meet certain criteria and you’re caught with a gun you get mandatory 5 years no parole in a federal prison. Saw an interview with a Richmond drug dealer. He had a couple of pounds of cocaine on the table in front of him. The interviewer queried him about the absence of a gun. Guy said “No guns, gun get me five years hard time. These drugs I be out in a couple of months.”

How true.
Idiots like partisanhave this utopian view that human knowledge and experience built over thousands of years can just suddenly be banned – turned off and not used ever again by ANYONE.
As I posted last night – look at all the things we’ve tried to ban – and that has NEVER succeeded in eliminating those things – can’t be done – so only an idiot could continue to believe it’s that simple.

I live about a 10-15 minute law enforcement response time out in a rural area. And trust me, the thugs in this area know that most people around here are armed and ready to pop a cap or two if someone stupid enough comes calling. But oddly enough, that almost never happens….Wonder why?

I swear that name keeps turning up all over the place. Read about it years ago in Reader’s Digest and loved it ever since. It just WORKS.

If partisan was really as committed as she thinks the rest of us should be, she should put a big sign up in front of her house that says “All guns should be banned! This house contains no guns!” Does anyone think, as stupid as her comments are, that she’s really stupid enough to do this?

I do. Go ahead partisan, show us how dedicated you are to your principles. Tell every thug anywhere near your house that you’re not armed. And post pics (if you survive long enough).
