Video: American reporter takes on Kremlin propaganda channel over Russian crackdown on gays

posted at 2:01 pm on August 21, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via the Washington Free Beacon, it’s Weekly Standard contributor and Christopher Hitchens protege James Kirchick doing his mentor proud by showing more balls in confounding Putin’s narrative than any White House spokesman has recently. If you’re unfamiliar with Russia Today, here’s a taste from other reporters who’ve experienced the magic firsthand:

And here’s what Kirchick got for his trouble today:

BuzzFeed had a nice explainer a few weeks ago about Russia’s new anti-gay law, which seems to operate in practice as state sanction for public beatings of gay-rights supporters, but you can guess the rationale even if you haven’t read their story. The prospect of eight more years of Putin brought thousands of people out into the streets to protest, no idle threat in the wake of the Arab Spring. He needed an enemy on which to focus the public’s attention and so he chose gays, partly because he could portray them popularly as a threat to the Russian Orthodox Church and partly because it would allow him to draw a contrast with how gays are treated in the feared and loathed west. Why he didn’t choose Jews as the designated scapegoat instead, as many Russian leaders before him have, I don’t know. Could be that global awareness of anti-semitism as a tool of oppression is now such that no “respectable” fascist outside the Middle East will practice it too overtly. Better to beat on the gays instead, he probably figures, since he can still get international backing from some world leaders on that in public.

As noted above, it’s not unusual for American journos to be invited on Russia Today. But after this, the invitations might dry up. Or be rejected more often even if they’re offered.

How is this any different from the way American journalists cover for Obama?

Sounds like Mitt’s WaWa speech or Zimmerman’s 911 call.

I wish the Russians well in their quest to keep gay Cosa Nostra from infesting their public airwaves and streets. If only we’d been as perspicacious in recognizing them for the insidious threat to the family that they are.

It’s classic useful idiot slaughter. Communists have been doing it for a century. Gays just so happen to be a much more public target.

Well that and an apparent “blackout” of some stories. That a student was shot in OK isn’t nearly as interesting as the media coverage that is bending over backwards to ignore race in a way they did not do in the Zimmerman/Martin story (which became a racial narrative).

Two Teens Charged with First-Degree Murder in College Baseball Player Killing

James Edwards, 15, and Chancey Luna, 16, pictured above via Facebook, were officially charged with first-degree murder and are being held without bond for the alleged boredom killing of college baseball player Christopher Lane. A third suspect, 17-year-old Michael Jones was charged with accessory after the fact and with driving a vehicle while a weapon was discharged. Apparently, Jones was not satisfied with the charges brought against him in court because he stated in court, “I pulled the trigger.”

Yeah, nothing to talk about here…

trs on August 21, 2013 at 2:31 PM

Russia doesn’t have a problem with persecution of gays. It has a problem with the lack of the rule of law in general. That thugs are going ignored as they beat gays is just another symptom of a far bigger issue, as the “legal” system in Russia is tied up pushing trumped-up charges on to the political rivals of Putin and his cronies.

Its sort of like the anti-bullying crusade here. Lady Gag and Barky will go on about anti-gay bullying in schools and such. Nobody gives a crap about the fat, nerdy, or just plain socially awkward kids that have been getting crap for generations. It’s the rainbow flag waving that’s enticing for the leftist agenda.

Who gives a crap that Russian police lie claiming that homes are on fire in order to bust into them illegally?
Or that a Moscow mayoral candidate is having his banners torn down and his ads pulled from radio stations because his campaign is gaining too much momentum for United Russia’s comfort?
Or that an already dead man was convicted in an embarrassing show trial?
Or that Russian roads are a disaster and mass action is needed just to get a couple of local bureaucrats to do routine maintenance?
Or that every driver puts a dash cam in his vehicle to protect himself against crooked cops and fellow drivers while traversing those insane roads?
Or that politicians and bureaucrats are buying luxury cars with public money?
Or that corruption is consuming a quarter to a third of the Russian economy right off the top?

Russia has a problem with a big overbearing government full of corrupt political hacks and holdovers from the Communist era. But railing against government in general is not properly leftist.

So instead the Western media cries and moans over the sad effects it’s having on one of their protected classes, but can’t give two craps what it’s doing to 140 million other Russians.

The term is “black Caucasian.” You’re supposed to follow the pro-Democrat racemongering media rule of always placing first the race or ethnicity you want the lumpenproles to remember. Ergo, Zimmerman is a “white Hispanic.” Obama is “black Caucasian,” and Jones is also “black Caucasian.” Sure, you can argue “white African-American” is more appropriate, but perhaps the racemongering media really wants everyone to think all the perps were black–so what? And now we go to Jessie Jackson for some frowning uponing.

RT is a propaganda machine. They do have worthwhile guests on occasion when it’s concerning stuff entirely about the West, but any news involving Russia itself is just government-controlled nonsense to pump up Putin and slander his rivals.

Russia is by no means on a hot streak of getting things right. Rather the USA is on a cold streak of getting lots of things completely ass-backwards. Putin only looks good at times because Obama is that much of a trainwreck.

Don’t confuse Putin for a conservative. Russia is governed by a party of crooks and thieves just like the US. Just because Putin uses a social-conservative agenda to work through the church doesn’t mean he’s any more a fan of liberty or the rule of law than the idiot over here destroying this country from the hard left.

The prospect of eight more years of Putin brought thousands of people out into the streets to protest, no idle threat in the wake of the Arab Spring. He needed an enemy on which to focus the public’s attention and so he chose gays

That is absolute nonsense Allah. Putin took a hard line against the gays during his initial go around as president of Russia years and years ago. He banned pro-gay demonstrations and didn’t hesitate to send in the storm troops to quell any violation of that ban. This isn’t some recent strategem to divert attention – he’s been very consistent in this regard his entire political career.

Thanks for your input, Jetboy. Shall I reserve a place in the Fruit Fly club for you, too?

Pincher Martin on August 21, 2013 at 3:25 PM

I don’t usually leave a drive-by insult…but I just couldn’t expand on your inane banality. Sure, I’m in the “fruit fly” club. But since you applaud the Russians and what amounts to legal beatings of gays there, I’ll have to be careful what you mean when you say “club”.

JetBoy on August 21, 2013 at 3:31 PM

Given’s Allah’s interest and past record, I’m willing to wager anyone here that we’ll have at least half-a-dozen items in the HA headlines and Green Room over the next several months about whether to boycott the Sochi Winter Olympics.

Perhaps one or two items will even rate a mention in the main blog. Allah will present all this in a disinterested manner, as if he finds it distasteful he even has to talk about it. But how else can we battle fascism?

Pincher Martin on August 21, 2013 at 3:34 PM

I don’t mind your drive-by insults. I just wish you’d work a little harder at them. At least make them funny or original.

A simple post of “Moron” should be beneath someone sucking up to as good a writer as Allahpundit.

Pincher Martin on August 21, 2013 at 3:37 PM

The dude was an ass and they should’ve cut off his mic – especially since he went dramatically off topic. He has a right to his opinion and his outrage, I’m sure both are appropriately placed, but not on his own terms as an invited guest.

Don’t let facts get in the way of good propaganda. It’s important to AP that he leaves in his readers’ minds that being anti-gay is just the kind of tool a fascist would naturally pick up when he’s decided he can’t be anti-Semitic.

Pincher Martin on August 21, 2013 at 3:43 PM

Well, I knew you must have your reasons. I’m just glad you’ve stated them so clearly. Calling Kirchick’s flashing of his rainbow suspenders a show of balls was a nice touch. You have a fine eye for sartorial courage.

You’re far too modest. It was you who noticed and mentioned the suspenders, not me, in a lame attempt to trivialize the issue, of course.

Perhaps you need to read more than Chris Hitchens to appreciate this, but there are better ways for you to battle fascism than by focusing on a trivial international issue that would have been unremarkable as recently as twenty years ago.

I appreciate your advice on battling fascism, PM, but when you’re cheering on Russia for criminalizing speech and looking the other way at gays being harassed, don’t hold it against me if I don’t take it too seriously. You should consider running in 2016, though. I doubt the GOP field will include someone who represents the “crush the gay Cosa Nostra Putin-style” point of view. That constituency deserves a voice.

It’s your continual, passive-aggressive focus on gay rights over the last several years – as if you’re handling the civil rights battle of our times

I emphatically don’t think it’s the “civil rights battle of our times.” And believe it or not, I understand the annoyance with people who do. The sanctimony from the pro-gay rights side can be unbearable. But not thinking it’s the civil rights issue of our time doesn’t mean I think it’s a non-story when a global malefactor like Putin decides to designate gays as his official scapegoat.

Allahpundit on August 21, 2013 at 3:46 PM

tommyboy on August 21, 2013 at 3:47 PM

The guy hijacks the discussion, breaks out his best 70′s-era, gay stereotype suspenders, personally attacks the host and instead of swaying minds, basically does his unprofessional best to validate Putin’s views on western gay activists and yet we’re expected to support his efforts here.

I hate to break this to him but YOU ARE NOT HELPING.

Also, I don’t ever recall seeing Hitchens reduce himself to near-hysterical rantings and theatrics such as this. His steely composure was much more devastating to his adversaries.

I’ve got to get back to the blog, but yes, he has escalated recently. They passed a new law about it two months ago.

Not when that post is part of a syndrome.

As I said earlier, Allah is a fruit fly. Gay issues are like the nectar of the Gods to him. He can’t help but buzz about them. He’s just fascinated by these issues and likes to write about them. Constantly.

That’s perfectly fine behavior at a liberal site. I’m just wondering why he uses this passive-aggressive style to so frequently insult and irritate his own site’s readers.

AP says it’s because he’s anti-fascist. But if you look at the full range of his posts and references, it’s clear the fascist angle is just an alibi for this particular recent post.

Pincher Martin on August 21, 2013 at 3:50 PM

It must gall American liberals that they hold no sway in Russia. All they can do is whine, without their usual recourses of protests, running to courts, and going on the Sunday morning gibberfests to simper in a larger forum.

As liberals like telling us, Obama won and Obamacare is the law of the land. Anyone objecting just has to suck it up and face reality.

Looks like American liberals have to do the same regarding Russia.

Liam on August 21, 2013 at 3:55 PM

I’ve always known that Russia Times or Today was always anti-American in it’s coverage but that’s okay, I like a negative look at our own interests. Sometimes lets you see how things really are. Russia Today is always preaching to the U.S. though, so it’s still nice to see them get verbally accosted for their anti-liberty policies toward gay people.

You’re far too modest. It was you who noticed and mentioned the suspenders, not me, in a lame attempt to trivialize the issue, of course.

Was Kirchick in Russia? Was he in any danger of being physically harmed for what he said? By speaking out on a Russian station, is he endangering his career by cutting off future opportunities? Is the English-language media in Russia a large cash cow for opportunistic foreign journalists?

No?

So when you said Kirchick was “showing more balls in confounding Putin’s narrative than any White House spokesman has recently”, I assumed you must place great emphasis on sartorial courage, since it’s not clear what other kind of courage you could have possibly seen in Kirchick’s feckless and rude gesture other than taking pride in a fashion faux pas.

I appreciate your advice on battling fascism, PM, but when you’re cheering on Russia for criminalizing speech and looking the other way at gays being harassed, don’t hold it against me if I don’t take it too seriously.

Speech is curbed everywhere, Allah. You don’t seem too concerned about the many other places around the world where speech by gay rights activists is curbed. Or in testing your lazy fascist thesis that it’s curbed for fascist reasons. Indeed, far worse sanctions are meted out against homosexuals in many places than Russia would ever dare consider.

The Russian government doesn’t want public discussion of homosexuality. So what? There are ten thousand larger tragedies to think about today. Even in Russia.

You should consider running in 2016, though. I doubt the GOP field will include someone who represents the “crush the gay Cosa Nostra Putin-style” point of view. That constituency deserves a voice.

Perhaps some of us here aren’t as keen as you are to conform to a politician’s stilted manner in speaking about public affairs.

If anything, I think some of us on the right ought to take our cues in this area from the success the gay rights advocates have shown over the last two decades. Despite starting out with positions that were extremely unpopular, they weren’t shy in agitating for what they wanted. And for the most part, they got it. They also did this largely without direct help from Democratic politicians, who were deathly afraid of being seen as too gay-friendly

When’s the last time the right took an extremely unpopular position and, over a period of many years, finally turned it into a winning issue?

Pincher Martin on August 21, 2013 at 4:19 PM

Sad state of affairs when this passes for intellectual debate. All Kirchick did was demonstrate how juvenile he is regardless of the Gallagher suspenders. He firstly came off as a college kid demonstrating his recently acquired knowledge from a course he just passed. Secondly, his refusing to talk about Manning made it look like a smoke screen. Finally,Hutchins would have talked about Manning and then segued into Homosexual rights.

It’s nice to see the socons here revealing their true colors by applauding Russian authoritarianism and state-sanctioned brutality, since in this particular instance it happens to dovetail with their own bigotries. Oh, but watch them shed crocodile tears over Coptic Christians in Egypt facing the same kind of treatment (which I’ll go on the record as firmly condemning).
