Issa: The State Department’s Benghazi investigation has been “a charade” from day one

posted at 1:21 pm on August 21, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

After the news that the four State Department employees who had been superficially and symbolically ‘held accountable’ following last September’s terrorist attack in Benghazi are now back at work at the State Department, House Oversight Chairman Darrell Issa issued the appropriately scathing statement: “Obama administration officials repeatedly promised the families of victims and the American people that officials responsible for security failures would be held accountable. Instead of accountability, the State Department offered a charade that included false reports of firings and resignations and now ends in a game of musical chairs where no one misses a single day on the State Department payroll. It is now clear that the personnel actions taken by the Department in response to the Benghazi terrorist attacks was more of a public relations strategy than a measured response to a failure in leadership.”

Sadly, charades and musical chairs seems to be a pretty apt way of describing this particular bout of never-ending stonewalling. Following up on Fox News this morning, Issa enumerated some of the ways in which the State Department is still obfuscating on Congress’s requests coming up on a year after the attack, and that the Accountability Review Board report to which Democrats and the White House endlessly pointed as the authoritative source on what went down in Benghazi and who was responsible for it — but our new secretary of state evidently is ready to pretty much just throw it out the window.

Our investigation continues. We’re issuing subpoenas, we’re reviewing documents. Right now we’re having an interesting argument where the State Department is trying to say that documents they’ve already provided to us, they want to up-classify. They were unclassified, now they want to, because we’ve asked to release some of them, they want to make them classified… So, there’s clearly still a coverup in the State Department going on. But you know, the way you classify what Secretary Kerry, I think has to be re-characterized. These people never lost a day’s pay, they were on “administrative leave,” and they’ve now been fully reinstated. Which means, absolutely nobody has been held accountable. I repeat: No one has been held accountable for four Americans dying. The Accountability Review Board only managed to find four people to use as scapegoats. They may have had some responsibility, but they certainly were not the highest-level people who have responsibility… If he can wrap this up, it does help former Secretary Clinton. … And of course, you mentioned, the coverup. The false statement, the knowing false statement that was perpetrated against the American people for about a week and even beyond, all the way until October 10th… the president really allowed the American people to be mislead and to think that this was a video rather than a planned attack on September 11th.

So?

mickytx on August 21, 2013 at 1:29 PM

Au contraire, Issa. Youtube Video Guy Nakoula was held accountable. Arrested in the dead of night and thrown in solitary confinement, IIRC.

Beyond that, though, no one has been held accountable by this administration.

Christien on August 21, 2013 at 1:29 PM

Well, Mr. Chairman, now that you’ve state the obvious….what are you going to do about it?

You are part of the co-equal branch of government. You head the House committee responsible for providing oversight over the actions of the Executive Branch.

Yet all you are basically doing is whinging about the past and current actions to maintain the cover-up. You need to be doing more than just stating the obvious and complaining about being stonewalled.

When will charges be filed against those who lied to Congress?
When will you and your leadership use every tool in your arsenal to assert your Constitutional rights as part of a co-equal branch of government?
When will you and your leadership take the gloves off?

And if you aren’t willing to do this – when will there be a House Select Committee appointed to do the job you should be doing?

Athos on August 21, 2013 at 1:33 PM

Ya know, that’s what I love about Darrell…he is so quick to pick op on things like this…

So much promise once…

Pretty much wasted.

Defund.

That is the primary ability of the House of Representatives…not issuing subpoenas and having “hearings.”

That charade started when the White House(all of them…Hillary over at State, and Rice in New York included) went for that Mohammed video meme….

It continued when Issa was going to get to the bottom of it no matter whaT.

Now, what does it matter?

coldwarrior on August 21, 2013 at 1:33 PM

throw somebody in jail, Darrell. Quit pussyfooting around and get tough with these bastards. There’s 4 dead Americans and a whole lot of missiles on the loose, what’re you gonna do?

metroryder on August 21, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Our investigation continues. We’re issuing subpoenas, we’re reviewing documents.

About Fast+Furious? Oh … nevermind. That’s over. A strongly worded letter was issued. People were, thus, held accountable. Meanwhile, Holder framed his contempt cite and has it hanging in the bathroom, just as Barky did with his contempt cite for his tyrannical dictats stopping off-shore drilling … because he didn’t like it.

Right now we’re having an interesting argument where the State Department is trying to say that documents they’ve already provided to us, they want to up-classify.

“interesting argument”. FU, Issa. You suck. Really.

Great read.

obama/Hillary own the ‘Arab Spring’ and Benghazi, the entire mess in the US foreign policy.

She’s as dumb at 3:00a.m. as is obama.

obama and Hillary have lots of blood on their hands, with lots more to flow.

Darrell, you’re the last person who should be whining about a cover-up. We KNOW it’s a cover-up. You’re in charge of the Congressional investigation, but so far all you’ve done is flap your gums. Unless you’re ready to start throwing some of these thugs in jail until you get answers, please STFU. I had high hopes that heads would roll over Fast & Furious … nothing. Benghazi is such a slam dunk that even you should be able to get to the truth. Unless and until that truth is told, you’re complicit in the deaths of those four brave Americans, and you’re no better than the scumbags you refuse to investigate.

GarandFan on August 21, 2013 at 2:00 PM

Issa finally says that Romney was far too chicken to say.

No Obama did not call it an “Act of Terror”

Obama made clear this was not that then did go on to say that real “Acts of Terror” would be swiftly avenged.

Obama still proves by his actions this was no act of Terror in his eyes. No one, not a single sole, has been held accountable. No swift action. Because after all “Who cares at this point?”

Mitt Romney was an absolute joke at that debate. Had he an ounce of integrity he would have called Candy and Obama out for lying to the American people.

Steveangell on August 21, 2013 at 2:00 PM

The decisions made that night and the subsequent cover-up came from the top (Obama and Clinton), therefore nobody will be held responsible. The majority of the media will continue to ignore the story, so ultimately nothing will happen.

d1carter on August 21, 2013 at 1:56 PM

Effing hypocrite. Had it been a black college student hunted down by white teens Jesse would have already been on the scene staging protest marches. Just the allegation of rape by Duke students resulted in Jackson paying a stripper’s tuition so that she would not “have to stoop that low to survive.” But when a gang of street thugs kills a white boy, well then it is just unfortunate.

This murder in juxtaposition with the Trayvon Martin/George Zimmerman confrontation are perfect for that long-promised dialogue about race. If only the race industry really wanted it.

Watching and hearing about the daily events that take place around the globe is like watching trailers for an upcoming blockbuster at the cinema. The difference is the trailers are of glimpse of an upcoming meltdown around the globe and particularly in the U.S.

One could easily argue that it “ain’t gonna happen here.” I guess if you are on vacation out west or down south in the coastal areas, you could easily believe that premise. Or just take a drive to the downtown area of your locality, or drive into the lush, expensive suburban neighborhoods and notice the immense wealth just in your area alone. Multiply that several times over. There is just too much at stake, too much to lose for the upper middle class and the wealthy. It just can’t happen here.

Think again. And while your pondering the possibility of a total meltdown, you might think about visiting your local ammo store to stock up on some necessities. There is just too much taking place at one time to discount the meltdown. Yes, I know things have looked bleak before and many thought the “perfect storm” was developing numerous times over the last few years. I think it is different this time. There are cracks beginning to show in the perceived unity of the Democratic Party. Many Dems and Progressives are losing their confidence in Obama and they have nowhere else to turn. Panic will set in, racial problems will multiply, and Shi# Will Hit the Fan.

Without pointing out all the other issues confronting the world at this moment, I will make my prediction of when the collapse will occur. The winter months are coming and things will cool down a bit (no pun intended), but the misery here and around the world will continue to fester. Next Spring and Summer will be the time. Hot weather always makes the natives restless. And one can bet that other events between now and next summer will cement the likelihood of the meltdown. At 65 years of age, I didn’t think I would live long enough to see it happen. And maybe I won’t…anything can happen to me at anytime. But just in case I live to see the day, I think I will be ready financially and in other ways to confront the collapse head on. And I will do so with a comforting thought…we will all be in the same boat…rich, poor, black, white, Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, etc.

How many times have we heard about Issa and his hearings? It’s getting to the point where it really doesn’t make any difference. If Issa were really serious he’d be banging on Boehner’s door demanding that something be done.

HiJack on August 21, 2013 at 2:17 PM

Sad to say, long past time to actually do something Darrell. Quit talking and DO something, m’kay!

Does everyone here understand the speaker of the house John Boehner can appoint a select committee to investigate Benghazzi? Does everyone here know that he has not, and has only provided mealy mouthed responses about how the process has to be allowed to work instead? Everyone in this forum needs to be contacting Boehner’s office and demanding he appoint a select committee for Benghazzi.

You are right, it is Boehner who is the bottleneck plugging up the Benghazzi investigation.

But you are wrong thinking Issa can do anything about it. Its up to you and I and especially the contiuents of his district.

I thought would pass along this little missive I sent to my Nebraska Congressional reps yesterday.

Senator Fischer, Senator Johanns, Representative Terry,

“No one will be fired, no one will go to jail”

I called all of your offices months ago and made that statement for the Bengazi, IRS and NSA debacles. And the poster child of gross incompetence and corruption, Bengazi, is my statement writ large today. Four low level State Department officials who were rolled out as human shields for Hillary Clinton and have been on paid vacation (administrative leave) for 8 months are back on the “geez-now-I-gotta-go-to-the-office payroll.

You know why the misery visited on the staff at Bengazi that night, the grief of the dead Ambassador and the security team families will not get any mitigating justice? Because it was just another day at the office for you guys.

Hey I’m sure you will issue a statement, write a letter, express your outrage, demand accountability. And then you will go to lunch.

Congress has become a toothless, thrashing, indignantly ineffective afterthought. The Obama administration rightfully has absolutely no respect or fear of the House or the Senate. I saw a report that the Obamas got another dog, I thought they were talking about Congress. They care as much about you as they did Ambassador Stevens and his staff a year ago. Clearly you want to be the dog, you get better treatment and Secret Service protection.

But hey you got the Obamacare waiver for your staff and you, probably got some bitchin’ seats for the Redskins game and routed $2.5M in Obamacare bribes to Nebraska. Life is good.

As then Secretary Clinton famously said. “What difference at this point does it make?”

Just another day at the office….

The Accountability Review Board only managed to find four people to use as scapegoats. They may have had some responsibility, but they certainly were not the highest-level people who have responsibility… If he can wrap this up, it does help former Secretary Clinton.

The true purpose of the coverup–help former Secretary Whats-the-Diff Clinton!!!

Issa needs to keep issuing subpoenas and keep digging until he finds out and makes public who gave the order to “stand down”, and what was the purpose of sending Ambassador Stevens to Benghazi when he belonged in Tripoli–was it to try to send Libyan arms to Syrian rebels?

This sounds a lot like the Iran-Contra affair that Democrats tried to use against Reagan and Bush Sr., and there’s probably a trail that leads straight to former Secretary Clinton. Keep following it, Rep. Issa, so she never becomes President!

When you have this kind of whitewash for a foul up with such huge consequences it makes you wonder whether there is ANYTHING that can get someone fired in the State Department, or any federal department for that matter. If the bar is below ‘well intentioned incompetence resulting in death’ is there any behavior that will be found unacceptable for a government employee ?
Misspelling ‘reset’ on the Russian Easy Button, perhaps ?

Issa’s useless political posing is hypocritical. He has no moral right to keep posturing like his own party wasn’t part of the problem.

David Blue on August 21, 2013 at 4:00 PM

Well, Rep. Issa that other thing your Committee gets to work on is the one known as ‘the budget’.

If you can’t get it from ‘hearings’ or testimony, and the State Dept. is stonewalling you, then their budget needs to come under scrutiny.

As in: what State Dept?

Axe it and hand over responsibilities for Embassies to the military.

Every diplomat a soldier.

That ought to shake things up a bit.

Plus get rid of the career diplomatic corps.

If they think they are more powerful than the House, then it is the House that needs to remind them of the purse strings. Get the entire State Dept pounding pavement. That ends any fuzziness about what it is when anyone attacks a US Embassy or its personnel.

dogsoldier on August 21, 2013 at 4:58 PM

Here’s how I see the progress of this Benghazi *investigation* ….

either, Boehner and/or other GOPers are secretly implicated in what The Phoney was actually *doing* in Benghazi, ie unconstitutional BULLSCHMIDT, that could take the leadership of both private political parties down

or there are tactics being employed deliberately for ‘timing’ reasons .. ie, they want the full and foul Benghazi stench attached to Barry and Killary to be revealed right as the 2014 Midterms come into focus next year.

I tweeted Boehner thus:

@SpeakerBoehner if U continue 2 stonewall on initiating a select committee 2 investigate #Benghazi I think Nov 2014 will end your time as #3

or (and at present I’m inclined to believe that this is the more likely reason for Boehner’s current inaction wrt a Benghazi select committee being convened immediately):

with all these scandals and massive govt corruption to deal with, much time is needed for the information about the govt abuse in each area to spread and be absorbed by the public (remember the Old Media is either corrupt, derelict or neutered through fear)

the CORRUPT LIAR is certainly tanking in the polls, but he will go down much further …

When the time is right, the Benghazi truth train will pull out from the Hicks Station, where it is quietly steaming (Issa has already deposed the next round of witnesses …)

the other govt abuse corruption scandals will soften up this lying corrupt Regime, but Benghazi I believe will decapitate it

… timing is everything though – it would be best for Constitutional America’s restoration if Benghazi is coming to culmination next year, right as the Midterms come into focus … we want as many lefty DEMs as possible to be tainted by the FOUL OBAMA/Killary STENCH before Americans go to the Polls

don’t forget:

FOUR are DEAD. Obama went to BED.

SINK THIS CORRUPT OBAMA REGIME AMERICA
