WaPo: Christie should “stand up” to Palin

posted at 8:41 pm on August 14, 2013 by Allahpundit

But … why? Why would a guy who, as nominee, would need tea partiers to hold their noises and vote for him in the general pick a needless fight with a tea-party favorite? He’s already alienated libertarians with his shots at Rand Paul. Now he’s going to (further) alienate mainstream grassroots conservatives too?

Brawling with your would-be base is an especially bad idea for a guy known for hugging Obama a week before election day last year. The rap on centrist Republicans is that they’re more comfortable with Democrats than with right-wing Republicans. If you’re one of them, take care not to do anything that would lend credence to that unless you’re getting a big political benefit from it.

Palin is widely viewed by much of the party — with the exception of her core followers (and she does retain a real following) — as someone who is advocating a direction for the Republican party that could lead to its electoral demise in 2016 and perhaps beyond.

There is a sentiment — largely expressed privately, still, at the moment — that someone needs to stand up to that wing of the party and say “enough is enough.”…

It’s possible that a Christie denunciation of Palin would mean that the likes of Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, both of whom are considering running for president in 2016, jump to defend Palin — sensing a political opportunity. Maybe. But, our sense is that Cruz and Paul — and their political advisers — will likely steer clear from any too-close association with Palin since she has proven herself to be a sort of free radical in the political process.

And, even if Christie does take some heat from the right for saying something along the lines of “I believe Sarah Palin is a voice for shrinking the Republican party, not growing it”, the gains he would make among the GOP voters who don’t identify with Palin and her brand of confrontational conservatism would more than make up for it.

Why stop there? Denounce gay-marriage opponents too, as well as conservatives who are willing to risk a government shutdown over defunding ObamaCare. Cover the whole media wishlist of things that a “reasonable” Republican should be and do. Let’s alienate as many core constituencies as possible in order to really dazzle them, and centrist voters, with Christie’s boldness.

Besides, his whole tough-guy act is a double-edged sword potentially. Centrists who hate Palin would enjoy seeing him take shots at her — as he’s done before — but if he got into an extended exchange with her, the narrative would shift from “RINO charges!” to “Does Christie have the temperament to be president?” and “Why is Christie allowing himself to be baited?” If he runs, he’ll end up signaling in various subtle and less subtle ways that nominating him would mean repudiating the Cruz/Palin wing of the party. No need to make it more explicit than it has to be.

Via RCP, here’s Mark Levin vowing to do what he can to make sure Christie’s not the nominee. Exit question: If Christie is the nominee, what are the odds of a third-party candidacy from the right? Rand Paul won’t do it, I think, just because he’ll want to remain viable for the GOP nomination in 2020.

Ironically, had the media and all the dimbulbcrat operatives NOT gone after her the way they did post-2008 election, she probably might have actually faded into relative obscurity.

By their constant attacks, they MADE her what she is today. A person who can annihilate with a simple Facebook post, who candidates seek an endorsement from – you made it Demonrats, now you get to live with it.

Why would any Republican (centrist or conservative) do what the Washington Post asks them to do, when everybody knows WaPo wants to elect Democrats? Christie is a big boy (in more ways than one) and can think for himself.

Besides, Sarah Palin is not really a threat to Gov. Christie in the 2016 nomination, because she has been out of office about 4 years now, while Christie is up for re-election THIS year in New Jersey. Sarah Palin lost a lot of credibility when she needlessly quit the Governorship of Alaska in 2009, and she probably needs to run for office and win (such as for Senator against Begich) to regain any credibility as a national candidate.

Gov. Christie and Senator Rand Paul need to stop sniping at each other publicly about what direction the Republican Party should take. It’s much too early for this–Gov. Christie should concentrate on getting re-elected as Governor, and Rand Paul should do his job as Senator from KY, and try to help Republican candidates in states where Democrat Senators are vulnerable in 2014.

If Republicans retake the Senate majority in 2014, they can exert a lot more pressure on Obama in 2015, and portray Obama as an out-of-touch lame-duck obstructionist. By then, Republican candidates for President can present ideas for what they would do as President in cooperation with a friendly Congress.

But it’s too early to debate that now. The 2012 election basically maintained the status quo, with Democrats retaining the Presidency and Senate, and Republicans retaining the House. Let’s use the failures of the Democrats to take control of the Senate in 2014, and worry about the Presidency later.

Have you donated to her PAC?
Sorry.

verbaluce on August 15, 2013 at 4:01 PM

Actually, I haven’t, so it’s no skin off my nose how SarahPAC spends money. But do you (or National Journal) have any figures on how other well-known PACs are doing? I’m thinking…no. And therein lies part of the reason Palin is VERY relevant.

I see what you are saying. It’s kind of like how Mitt Romney being out of elected office for 5 years wasn’t a threat in 2012?

geez do people even think before they post?

ddrintn on August 15, 2013 at 6:29 PM

At the end of june.

Sarahpac had $1.1 million in the bank compared to say Rubio who only had about $850k.

75% of Sarahpac’s donations came from donations under $200 unlike say Rubio’s who got most of his from big donors. This in a nutshell is what scares the elites. For Gov Palin to be able to bring that much capital to bear during 2014 from small donors is really unheard of in DC. Most people in Dc count on big donors. this is why regardless of what the media tries to tell you Gov Palin is still very much relevant going into 2014 and why the push by people and centers like the WApo to sideline her.

$1.1 million makes candidates sit up and notice add into it the bonus effect her endorsement has in volunteers, GOTV, funding for the candidate endorsed etc, her endorsement will be very sought after going into 2014.

Palin quit the governorship because of the fictious charges she was being held to that were made up. You can be very innocent but you still need to hire the defense attorneys to fight the charges. This is a tactic that the left uses to force an issue. It would have cost millions for the State of Alaska to prove her innocence and she quit rather than cost the State that money and it would have proved nothing. What did the BJ Clinton got impeached for prove? That fraud is a hero to the left as well as the present keeper of the White House. We know he’s a fraud and a puppet and there is absolutely nothing being done about it. This keeps the public busy as the government within our government goes about their business.

Dire Straits on August 17, 2013 at 5:29 PM

Sara Palin might be out of office for four years but she still knows BS republicans and what they stand for. The republican base fears her and if they ever gave her an unedited mic and camera all hell would break loose. I would love to see her in the Senate where she would do the most good and she could stay there forever tweaking the noses of those holy endowed Senators.
