Attorney for U.S. whistleblower: 400 surface-to-air missiles were stolen from Benghazi

posted at 11:21 am on August 13, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Breitbart and the Daily Mail, seven minutes from Joe DiGenova’s chat with WMAL yesterday. The key bit comes at 3:25, after he points out that Obama’s arguably guilty of contempt of court for publicly acknowledging a sealed indictment against the Benghazi attackers at his presser on Friday.

This isn’t the first time that someone with inside info has floated the theory that SAMs were key to what the CIA was doing in Benghazi. CNN mentioned that too in its big scoop about agents allegedly being intimidated into silence, although the SAM connection was mentioned as speculation going around on Capitol Hill, not something that CNN itself was substantiating. Anyway, two points to bear in mind while you listen. One: DiGenova never specifically says that the SAMs were stolen during the attack or that they were removed from the CIA annex. He does say that it’s “clear” that the annex was “somehow involved” in distributing the missiles, but that’s as specific as he gets. It occurs to me that if the missiles were being kept at the annex and that the Benghazi attack was really an operation by jihadis to steal them, it’s … odd that they would have attacked the consulate first. Maybe they thought the missiles were being kept at the consulate, under cover of diplomacy? Or maybe they just didn’t know that the annex was a CIA hub. That seems hard to believe, but there you go.

Two: Powerline’s written more than one post attempting to debunk the “CIA was shipping SAMs to Syria from Libya” theory of what happened, which caught fire after CNN’s report. A congressional source, presumably on the GOP side, told them that even he’s skeptical of that. Michael Ledeen speculated in an e-mail to Powerline that Syria had nothing to do with it; what probably happened, he thinks, is that the CIA was trying to collect some of the heavier weapons Libyan rebels had acquired during the war with Qaddafi. That makes more sense. It does seem odd that the CIA would choose a fragile, dangerous place like Benghazi as a base for running missiles to Syria when they could do it from Qatar or Jordan, say, instead. If Ledeen’s theory is right, that the CIA was actually trying to recoup weapons rather than hand them out, then the scandal is — as it really always has been — about the light security in place at the annex and consulate to defend an arsenal as dangerous as 400 SAMs. You can understand, then, why both Obama and the agency would be so tight-lipped about the truth. Stockpiling a nightmare weapon in the heart of a city crawling with jihadis and then failing to protect the cache from a terrorist assault is a titanic security blunder. If true, it’s a giant embarrassment for the CIA and would have been a damaging blow to Obama’s counterterror credentials before the election last year if known.

Note what DiGenova says about firing SAMs into buildings, not just at planes. He thinks that’s a contributing factor to the decision to close down U.S. embassies last week after Al Qaeda’s new terror threat. Exit question: If the SAM theory is true, did the Libyan rebels get those missiles from … us? I’m thinking no, since handing out a plane-killing weapon to a dubious “ally” while we were operating a no-fly zone seems too goofy even for O.

The cover-up is worst than the crime….

One wouldn’t think this the case when the Administration let 4 American’s die….but as we slowly learn more about Benghazi, we are going to learn the reasons for the massive cover-up and the contemptuous actions of this Administration and its senior officials.

The Obama Administration transcending from the ‘worst’ US Administration in US history to emulating the arrogance, hubris, corruption, and contempt last seen in the court of Louis XVI….and its highlighting just how bankrupt far too many in this country have become.

Hillary and obama have blood on their hands and souls, in big ways.

Benghazi is the small part of the story.

obama and Hillary are responsible for passing the weapons to AlQuaida in Syria and all the other nasty places.

No wonder the scumhag Hillary will make big speeches.

Take this to the bank – the lunch with the priceling in chief was not about her running for preezie; it was about this topic. I told you this when the lunch happened.

Why? Bark and his henchmen handed out thousands of modern guns to outright enemies while simultaneously operating against them in the drug war.

Is it really so hard to believe that a stone-cold narcissist such as Bark, surrounded by people who are as self centered as he is, wouldn’t dream up a scheme that they believe is master level chess but is in reality Go Fish?

We’re talking about a jackass who turned his back and went to sleep while our SEAL’s in Benghazi were fighting for their lives and screaming for help.

Which is worse: collecting weapons to keep them out of bad guys hands, or illegally shipping weapons to Syria without Congressional approval/funding? I think it’s the latter, by a country mile. I have a hard time believing that O & Co would go through an elaborate (if totally incompetent) cover-up for a security lapse. They could have dressed that up pretty well without a coverup, especially given that the media is in the tank for them and willing to gulp down limitless amounts of Barry-flavored kool-aid. But an illegal gun-running operation? Yeah, there is no way they could spin that.

No, but the 757s they bring down just might. And that becomes problematic for this administration. How do you dismiss a plane blown out of the sky as workplace violence or the act of a lone wolf? Remember, according to the official record, we have not had a domestic terrorist attack since the rat-eared wonder took office. This could well mess with that record of “success.”

Happy Nomad on August 13, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Schadenfreude on August 13, 2013 at 11:41 AM

Let’s say those 400 SAMs, if they existed, were being collected by CIA from Libyan armed forces. Just what did CIA plan to do with them? If the intention was to deny them to Libyan insurgents (who Obama was supporting, BTW), then why weren’t those weapons being helicoptered out every time CIA got twenty missiles? Why would CIA be sitting on 400 of them, even if they were Russian-made?

Russian weapons work, which means they’re dangerous. If those things existed, they should never have been stockpiled in those numbers even if for safekeeping.

I have a problem “thanking” Snowden for exposing what NSA is doing. You don’t expose sources and methods without doing damage to national security overall. We know that Congress was lied to. I suspect that NSA minimized what they were actually doing during closed oversight hearings. But Snowden is no hero.

That being said, I just don’t see how we ever get the truth about Benghazi or anything else when the DoJ and administration are clearly in contempt of Congress. Clapper and Alexander should be in jail. Susan Rice should be so disgraced that she isn’t even in public service. And people should be laughing at the very idea the Butcher of Benghazi, Hillary Clinton, is even thinking of running for President.

If Ledeen’s theory is right, that the CIA was actually trying to recoup weapons rather than hand them out,

Allah – They were handing out the recouped Qaddaffi weapons so we didn’t have to send anything of ours to Syria.

It’s plausible deniability.

Whether its Russia, The GOP or the media, Team Obama can deny involvement by saying “The Rebels” got them via black market.

Except we’re controlling the market.

Because if we don’t, the SAM’s go to AQ affiliates since they’re the only ones with the deep connections into Libya.

That’s why Team Obama worked so hard to blur the narrative about Syria.

If no one in the media can clearly explain which group is for what, then Team Obama can constantly shuffle the information.

If a report says AQ members have SAM’s, the admin can say “They’re not AQ members”, and nobody will question it because no outside verification exists.

Snowden can be the Devil now and I still appreciate what he did. I don’t care what he will be called by anyone. History will record him as the one American with steely ones who brought obama to size, which is to say – the eunuch that he always is. NO one dared to expose the tyrant. You’re talking about a regime that handed out weapons to drug cartels to commit murders with (and insure that the American-source weapons were found at the scenes) in order to lend “legitimacy” to its efforts to abrogate the Second Amendment.
If the regime doesn’t blanch at the murders of over 300 innocent Mexicans – and at least two (if not more) American law enforcement officers – what makes you think it’s “too goofy” to think they wouldn’t mind a plane-load of about 300+/- Americans being shot down in order to further restrict the liberty of Americans in the name of “security”?

When he first typed abot Iran I told him “thanks for sanctioning Reagan’s actions, same as obama’s”. He never came back. ‘hit’ ‘n run is the weasel’s MO.

Note what DiGenova says about firing SAMs into buildings, not just at planes.

I’m skeptical on making that work. I would think that a SAM developer would put a triggering mechanism related to altitude on a SAM–preventing it from detonating below a certain altitude. Despite that, it would be still quite an impact from the kinetic energy alone.

If they are stealing missiles, I guess this means we’ve finally stopped selling them to AQ.

Because addicts who could buy drugs won’t steal them, too.

That jumped out at me as well. The warhead on a handheld SAM is also not designed for a building. The seeker on it is also designed to filter out all but the heat source from a jet engine.

Some of these articles are likely conflating handheld SAMs and handheld guided (surface to surface) missiles like AT4′s, and there would be plenty of both generic types in Libya.

Iran, Syria: Smuggling Weapons to Gain Influence in the West Bank

There are growing indications that Iran, Syria and their local proxies may be attempting to build up militant capabilities in the West Bank to eventually threaten Israel….

Not gonna be one. Her mom decided that she had exploited her just the right amount, and no more was proper.

Just a few facts: SAM’s or MANPADS systems don’t give a darn about altitude or launch attitude. You can just as easily launch a Stinger from ABOVE your target (see Afghanistan vs. Soviet helos circa. 1980’s) the bird doesn’t give a crap along as it has ‘target detection’. It leaves the tube once the prefire functions (battery initiation, detector precool, uncage the seeker, etc.) are accomplished. WE in the (Western world) ordnance business give a damn about safety of the ‘Ourguys’ so we have sophisticated S&A (Safe & Arm) functions so that our weapons (if they happen to malfunction) DO NOT injure the gunners. Warsaw Pact ordnance … not so much.
As for using MANPADS against terrestrial targets? Yes you can but I ain’t gonna explain how.
Having a stash of 400 … wow that’s BCT (Brigade Combat Team) quantities.
Vince Foster, Sean Smith, Glen Doherty, Tyrone Woods, and Chris Stevens, … What did Killery know and when did she know it?

Well, some Al Qaeda or some other pack of Islamofascist murdering scumbags has them now. Thanks, Barry and Hillary.

The stink keeps getting richer the longer this go’s on. By the time 2016 rolls around, we all will be smelling it. Some one should remind the current Commander in Chief that the dead do talk, and we will all be hearing from them soon.

flackcatcher on August 13, 2013 at 7:29 PM

Sooooo, in the overall scheme of things, according to Obumble, judging by his actions and policies, it’s ok for every Muslim terrorist / freedom fighter around the world to be fully armed with any kind of weapon they want, with the US paying the bill – but US citizens can’t be trusted with firearms of any type…..
Is that about right?

It does seem odd that the CIA would choose a fragile, dangerous place like Benghazi as a base for running missiles to Syria when they could do it from Qatar or Jordan, say, instead.

Yes under normal circumstances this would be true. This is however the Obama administration. The sheer incompetence is so staggering that it’s entirely plausible they would choose a fragile place for running misses to Syria

Exactly!

Couple of possibilities, -you want a place that is somewhat lawless so the local gendarmes don’t walk in and ask what’s going on here, because:
-We were urging the Russians to embargo arms to Assad, so we would not want them to know we were supplying the rebels.
-Financial unconstitutionality, ie Iran-Contra.
-Arms embargoes already in place from the EU, and one in-process at the UN.
-The REB accepted that we were dealing with al Qaeda in order to take down Assad, and didn’t want that known.

It is clear that the CIA is and always and has always been the gun running agency of the US Government. Can’t say it has always been true, after all I can only speak of the past 46 years. Gee Wiz Batman what dose any think the move “Air America was about. What is clear here is that the Sectary of State is also involved. Yet “We The People” are being set up for another 8 year Clinton Dynasty Rule.

jpcpt03 on August 13, 2013 at 10:44 PM

Before Qadaffi fell, Obama said he would not put US boots on the ground. The military warned this was a bad idea because the nearly 1,000 shoulder-launched surface-to-air missiles could not be allowed to fall into terrorist hands. The FACT is the CIA had been there already for a while, 1st as advisers, trainers, and gun suppliers to the Al Qaeda-backed rebels. A month after Qadaffi fell we were already seeing some of these rocket launchers in Egypt and in the hands of anti-Israel Jihadists.

The U.S. does not open up embassies or ‘compounds’ manned by an Ambassador without adequate U.S.supplied protection. It is amazing no one was asking why there were no Marines – or U.S. personnel – guarding Stevens in Benghazi, why his protection was being entrusted to an Al Qaeda-associated militia, why repeated requests for additional U.S. security was constantly denied – especially after 2 terrorist attacks!

easyt65 on August 13, 2013 at 11:58 PM

The answer, of course, was the CIA-run weapons-running operation, delivering weapons – to include these rockets – to Jihadists in Syria. No US security in Benghazi before the 9/11/12 attack, no US. Response teams allowed in during the attack, & he FBI wasn’t even allowed in until more than a month later, after the CIA op had been shut down & completely cleaned up. 4 Americans were betrayed, abandoned, & sacrificed to die so Obama could try to hide the fact that he was providing weapons not only to terrorists in Syria but terrorists in Egypt and elsewhere across the Middle East…just as he did in Libya.

Of course this is not the 1st time an Obama gun-running operation resulted in the deaths of Americans. In Fast-and-Furious, Obama delivered 2,000automatic weapons & grenades to Drug Cartels, who used them to kill 300+ (and counting) people, to include an American Border Patrol Agent.

And Obama calls these ‘phony scandals…
