GOP rep: We could probably get the votes in the House to impeach Obama

posted at 1:31 pm on August 12, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via BuzzFeed, some slow-news-day easy pickings courtesy of Rep. Blake Farenthold. He’s blowing smoke, of course; for all the lefty angst about GOP obstructionism over the past two years, there hasn’t been so much as a whisper from anyone in leadership about dropping the I-bomb. And I don’t think that’s because (as Farenthold himself acknowledges) any impeachment attempt would be DOA in a Democratic Senate. The GOP might have a majority there next year and you won’t see any impeachment attempts then either. Public reaction is simply too unpredictable. If they can’t get half the caucus in the Senate to risk shutting down the government for a few days to defund ObamaCare for fear of a public backlash, how likely is it that they’d risk a more momentous backlash by pulling together 218 votes for an impeachment battle? You might get a majority of the House caucus to vote yes, but only because they know the measure would fail and there’d be no political consequences. And even that’s a silly hypothetical because Boehner would never allow a floor vote. The risk of accidental detonation is too frightening when you go fiddling with political nuclear bombs.

But don’t take any of this too seriously. Farenthold’s not floating impeachment, he’s just trying to make a Birther go away. This is his way of appeasing her. Yes, of course we could impeach Obama and he’d richly deserve it, but those darned Democrats in the Senate would foil the whole thing. Sigh. The Great Birth Certificate Hoax will have to remain unpunished. If this feels familiar, it’s because Democratic presidential candidates on the trail in 2007, during the heyday of 9/11 Truth, were occasionally confronted by Truthers asking them to investigate thermite stockpiles in Manhattan or whatever once they assumed office. And as often as not, rather than get indignant with those people, they’d politely promise to “look into it” (as Farenthold does here) in order to extricate themselves from an unpleasant situation. Here’s Farenthold’s version of extrication.

We’re just a couple more shoe drops in the IRS scandal and/or Benghazi to make leadership actually start whispering about this. More than whispering, in fact.

And I don’t think that’s because (as Farenthold himself acknowledges) any impeachment attempt would be DOA in a Democratic Senate.

Impeachment hearings start January 2015 when the GOP is in control of both the House and Senate. But not in the way you think. First order of business is to cut away at the monster. Impeachment of Holder and a myriad of other administration officials. Valarie Jarrett under oath about her role in telling forces to stand down at Benghazi. Etc.

You can’t touch the filthy rat-eared coward because the media isn’t going to let the first black President go down in the disgrace he so richly deserves. But you can take down the whole operation around him.

Impeaching Bill Clinton on a tl;dr charge of perjury in 1998 splashed back on *us,* not the Dems. Without serious popular support for impeachment of 0bama, it’s not going to happen. However, the more we drag these scandals out, and it becomes clear the I button wasn’t pushed *because the R’s decided not to push it,* not because the charges lacked merit, the harder the Dems’ 2016 candidate will have it.

That ship has sailed. There is no shame in our national conscience anymore, and no (D) Senators have the moral compass to guide them towards integrity and honor in the office.

It means nothing without morality. Look at Bill Clinton as an example. Perjury, impeachment, yet he won Father of the Year this June, (wow) and his wife

Say what you will about Nixon, but shame played a role in his actions. These folks are different. Impeachment would be a valuable/meaningless/political tool to be used against the (R)s come election time, and our low-info types (Clinton was impeached for sex!) won’t know any different. Or care.

Chris of Rights on August 12, 2013 at 1:36 PM

Sorry, but nothing will ever happen to Obama over either one. The fact that the IRS is still targeting conservative groups and there’s been virtually no investigation into their previous transgressions by the FBI tells you all you need to know about the Democrats’ attitude toward that scandal. The only thing they’re sorry about is that they were caught.

As for Benghazi, that could eventually do damage to Obama’s numbers, but he’ll never be impeached over it. Unless we find out that he himself ordered(or directed through a proxy like Jarrett) that assistance be denied to the Americans who were under attack that night. That would be enough to destroy his standing as Commander-in-Chief that he’d be a cancer to this country in foreign affairs(he’s almost there on the domestic front).

CurtZHP on August 12, 2013 at 2:12 PM

These folks are different.

Unfortunately so.

What effectively pushed Nixon onto the cusp of impeachment and ultimately resignation was the decision by John Dean to testify against the President and the GOP Congressional Leadership to visit the President and tell him that they were no longer supporting him because of his actions and those of his Administration.

The ‘different folks’ today will not break with Barack Obama. We have yet to see a John Dean step forward over the numerous scandals and abuses of power to provide conclusive evidence. The lamestream media, so instrumental in Watergate, is so far in the tank for Barack Obama that they have sacrificed all pretenses of journalistic integrity, ethics, and responsibility. Finally, just as with the impeachment of Bill Clinton, the Democrats in the Senate will ignore the evidence and their responsibilities to the American people in the sake of ideological loyalty.

Finally, we have the inept and afraid of their own shadows GOP House Leadership who continue to refuse to appoint a House Select Committee or aggressively hold the Administration accountable for their abuses of power and contempt of Congress.

Athos on August 12, 2013 at 2:13 PM

Clinton was impeached because he lied in/to the court. Obama lies to everyone else. Impeachment is not gonna happen.

Clinton’s impeachment went to the Seanate for trial. Repubs had the majority but the Senate leader caved immediately. Still more changes needed in GOP leadership before anything can approach what is needed.

When you have a President who has set aside the Constitution and the rule of law as often as this one has Impeachment becomes a necessary public duty and act of patriotism.

BobMbx on August 12, 2013 at 2:22 PM

In a truly just world he and the rest of the democrats should be imprisoned not impeached.

trs on August 12, 2013 at 2:29 PM

1) Impeachment goes nowhere unless a majority of the DEMOCRAT SENATORS publicly announce that they would vote to convict given the information they already have. Conviction requires a 2/3 vote… 67 Sentors… the only way we reach 67 is if all 46 Republicans and 21 of the 54 Democrats in the senate vote to convict. If a majority of the DEMOCRAT SENATORS publicy called for an impeachment trial, then the Republican House could vote on articles of impeachment without fear. But short of that, the Republican House won’t do it.

2) Impeachment is for those who are eligible to hold the office in the fist place. Usurpers aren’t impeached… they are simply removed from office when it is discovered that they were never eligible to hold the office in the first place.

3) Felony forgery was committed on the White House web site, and Obama claimed that forgery as his “Birth Certificate”. Whether he created the PDF himself or not is irrelevant… he claimed it as his, and claimed that it was proof of his eligibility.

4) What the House should do now is not pass articles of impeachment, but rather call an investigation into this felony forgery.

ITguy on August 12, 2013 at 2:32 PM

Rep. Blake Farenthold, even though you are ‘blowing smoke’, for being the only Republican with the B@LLS to say this aloud, you are the top, lead, mosy impressive Republican at this moment (IMO) in ALL of Washington!

FINALLY a Republican, even in jest, has the courage to SAY THE WORD ‘Impeachment’, which is more than deserved as well as JUSTIFIABLE when compared to past President and previous Impeachments of past Presidents!

Bill Clinton was Impeached for 1 incient – for lying/being deceitful under oath during his Sexual Harrassment Law suit (a Presidential 1st) for which he was admonished and stripped of his license to practice law. The attempt by the Leader of the United States, sworn to protect and defend American Citizens’ rights, to strip /deny an American citizen of their Constitutional Right to a fair trial earned Clinton Impeachment in the House.

Richard Nixon was forced from office for simply finding out about and participating in the Watergate Wire Tapping scandal cover-up. That 1 (ONE) event caused him to be forced from the White House!

Along with the many NEGATIVE records President Obama has set – ‘Monthly’, ‘Annual’, & ‘Total’ deficit-spengin; Most Lies about 1 agenda-driven bill – “Obamacare will 1) not cost a dime, 2) will pay for itself, 3) will reduce the deficit, 4) will lower the cost of health care, 5) will NOT cause people to lose their jobs, 6) will NOT result in people losing their prefered health care, 7) is NOT a step towards single-payer health care, 8) Congressmen & Senators will have to participate and pay for their own premiums…. – Obama has set the record for most / most on-going scandals by any single President in US History.

+ Fast-and-Furious
++ Protecting an Attorney General caught/punished for perpetrating 3 Felony Counts of Perjury before Congress
++ Continued refusal to comply with a subpoena requiring the WH to release more documents – the cover-up continues

+ Benghazi
++ OBVIOUS/proven Lies, cover-up: CIA report modified 12 times by WH & State Dept; continues lies about a video; attempt to hide a CIA-to-Syria Gun-running operation; 2 orders to betray/abandon Americans under fire, refusing to allow witnesses testify, giving CIA members aliases/new SS#s, & testing them monthly (polygraph) to ensure they say nothing, etc…cover-up continues

+ IRS Scandal: Obama administration targeting Americans – the Obama administration targeting Obama’s ‘political enemies’ & re-election threats; WH lie about ‘lone wolf’ rogue IRS agents destroyed; 2 ex-IRS leads caught perjuring themselves before Congress; witnesses testify almost every member of Obama’s WH staff knew…incredulously except for Obama; and the targeting still continuing…the cover-up on-going – WH still refusing to hand over records…

+ DOJ Wire Tapping Scandal: DOJ conducted wire taps of media editors, reporters, and their FAMILIES – Atty General Holder again perpetrated the Felony Crime of Perjury before Congress by claiming he knew NOTHING…only to admit later when he was called back to testify again that he not only knew about it but HE ordered it and went ‘judge shopping’ to finally find a judge who would authorize it/issue the subpoena required – cover-up continues.

+ NSA Spying: Thanks to Snowden we now know under this Administration the Patriot Act was expanded to the point it violated the Constitution, specifically the 4th Amendment which protects Americans from UNREASONABLE search and seizure. Head of the NSA testified that every American is listed on 1 blanket subpoena that lists us all as a potential threat to the US in order to justify their illegal data collection. The NSA chief even admitted under oath that wire taps had been illegally conducted wityhout subpoenas – cover-up continues

In comparison to other Presidents who were Impeached, Obama deserved and should have been facing Articles of Impeachment no less than 4 times by now!

Of course the GOP do not have the testicles to ‘administer justice evenly/fairly’, to actually begin drafting deserved Articles of Impeachment, but kudos to Farenthold for at least mustering the courage to voicing aloud the WORDS ‘Impeachment’ and ‘Obama’ in the same breath!

easyt65 on August 12, 2013 at 2:55 PM

for all the lefty angst about GOP obstructionism over the past two years, there hasn’t been so much as a whisper from anyone in leadership about dropping the I-bomb.

FTFY.

Also, it’s very convenient for righties to paint truthers as “the left’s birthers,” but I don’t think that’s really the case. Truthers weren’t “out to get Bush.” They didn’t believe in the conspiracy theories because they hated Bush and wanted to get him out of office. They believe it because more because they distrust government in general and got sucked down the rabbit hole of this massive conspiracy theory.

Birthers are out to get Obama. That’s the agenda: we hate Obama so much that we believe him to be a liar. He’s from Kenya. He’s Muslim and there’s nothing you can do to convince me otherwise.

In the clip of this Republican rep, he says “unfortunately, the horse of out of the barn” and that congress “should have acted” prior to the election on the issue.

He then goes on to that Clinton comparison, ending with the thought that he doesn’t want to impeach him because, if it fails, what will we be saying it’s OK to do?

This rep is directly confronted with the opinion that Obama is not an American citizen. And throughout his answer he implies that he agrees with that assessment. Or at least thinks it’s a possibility.

Edwards is never directly confronted with the theory that US government planned 9/11 or at the very least demolished the buildings after the attack. He has trouble understanding what the guy is saying, then when he gets a little of what he’s saying, probably knows this guy is a Truther and dismisses him in about 10 seconds.

The republican rep engages/indulges this woman for three minutes, never stating what he thinks and strongly implies that he agrees with her, and also implies that the House would probably impeach Obama because of the Birther B.S.

There’s a big difference between the two. I’m sorry, but I’m not buying your convenience birther/truther parallel.

Tom_Shipley on August 12, 2013 at 3:02 PM

I don’t think they have the votes or the balls. They’re scared to death of being labeled racist (not to mention some Republicans quietly admire him). Besides, the vote would be completely worthless since the Senate will ignore it.

Years from now, children in this country will be taught that BHO was the greatest president in our history.

Fazman on August 12, 2013 at 3:21 PM

This president can basically do anything he wants and nothing will happen to him. Having the right skin color does have its advantages.

Fazman on August 12, 2013 at 3:26 PM

Impeachment does not magically end problems for conservatives, as appealing as the prospect is. Progressives still have a choke-hold on what is supposed to be a republican form of government. Better to start small, like, say, end the nightmare that is “affordable” health care.

long_cat on August 12, 2013 at 3:41 PM

AllahP. is correct about the backlash. If you thought the reaction to the Zimmerman/Martin case was bad, that would be a little dust-up compared to the reaction we’d see regarding the impeachment of The First Black President®.

The best approach is to isolate OBambi so that he can’t do anymore harm. The best way to to do that, is to win back Congress and then OBambi becomes an afterthought.

Instead of worrying about impeachment, the GOP should come out collectively and say that the business mandate will stay in place. The President doesn’t have the right to pick and choose the laws he wants to follow, especially ones that he signed into law.
If the President has heard from the business sector about the mandate, his job is to get the Legislative Branch together and find a way to delay it. This will be an example of Obama “repealing ObamaCare” that the media have placed on the GOP. (Even though they voted only twice for full repeal and have legislated out the pieces that have nothing to do with healthcare improvements.)

The best approach is to isolate OBambi so that he can’t do anymore harm. The best way to to do that, is to win back Congress and then OBambi becomes an afterthought.

This is what we elected a majority of “conservatives” to do in the House.

They must have forgotten what they were sent to DC to do.

“I will veto any bill that cuts funding for the healhtcare law”

“Darn….he’s got us with the veto thing”

Erh…..don’t send a bill. Don’t write a bill.

He can’t veto a bill that doesn’t exist.

No bill = no funding.

BobMbx on August 12, 2013 at 4:55 PM

You could catch Obama committing a murder on video and impeachment would still never get through the Senate.

Stop thinking about, it’s never going to happen.

Instead, neuter the guy by defeating every nonsense issue he brings up. Amnesty? Nope. Obamacare funding? Nope. New regulations? Nope.

What a waste of 8 years. Oh, and thanks republicans who decided to stay home in November.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio’s Team now has the scrutinised and forensically tested documents that prove Obama is a usurper/charlatan

no doubt the FBI has received them, and these evidential documents have been entered into the records of both investigations, in the HOR and in the Senate

no wonder The Phoney is losing it behind closed doors … HA!

Have you heard that he is worried about impeachment? …. has been roaming the WH, sleepless, weeping … ‘they’re gonna impeach me! …. waaaah! …”

You’re dang right you CORRUPT LIAR ~>The
Constitution you hate is gonna NAIL your LYIN CORRUPT A$$ to the Wall!

I think the timing of everything is very important … and the WH is not in control of the Rollout of all this scandal information … somebody else is …

Looking at the lay of the land at present it doesn’t look like an impeachment trial could be held until the 2014 midterm cleanout of Barry Enablers ..

indeed: If you don’t want a man unhappy politically, don’t give him two sides to a question to worry him; give him one. Better yet give him none. Let him forget there is such a thing as war. If the government is inefficient, topheavy, and tax-mad, better it be all those than that people worry over it. Peace, Montag.

t8stlikchkn on August 12, 2013 at 6:25 PM

A waste of time.
As Obama is a waste of space.

You can’t get rid of the the “historical” Reparations-In-Chief president without a properly exposed scandal that is so outrageous that the media would deign to report it.

Benghazi will probably turns out t be such a criminal act.

But the Congresss need to get it out, and exposed, and documented, under oath and pushed into the media to the point that the nation turns on Obama.

As public opinion turned on Nixon.

Forcing our normally craven government servants to do the same.

Without that, this is all useless silliness.

One Birther who’s “gone away” is Andrew Breitbart.

One of his last conversations was a phone call Andrew made to Joe Arpaio the night he was killed. Very strange that no one has troubled themselves to determine what exactly was the nature of that contact, and if Breitbart had intended to focus his attention on Arpaio’s investigation into the fraudulent digital Birth Certificate posted at the White House website.

Really disappointing to see you trash the memory of Andrew this way, Allahpundit.

Obama is just the faceman. He’s not the brains of the outfit or even a critical part of it.

Seems more and more apparent, doesn’t it?

I’ll never get this smugness concerning “Birthers” or even “9-11 Troofers” for that matter. People have some questions they want to be answered one way or another with indisputable documentation and they get kicked and bleated at by the herd. Dare to ask questions and folks get labeled as “kooks”.

I think that many Conservatives are really in love with the State and the status quo-they would much prefer to see the State rule with an iron fist under the auspices of the GOP rather than the Dumocrats.

Concur.
If you want to keep your blinders on, go ahead.
But, don’t use Alinsky-like tactics against people you disagree with.
When the document specialist used by the legal firm employed by Obama has himself declared the digital BC posted on the WH website is a fudged together forgery, it’s time to take “birthers” seriously.

Dexter_Alarius on August 13, 2013 at 1:03 PM

I still have immense difficulty with the dismissiveness displayed by so many Conservatives regarding the Birth Certificate and 911.

Are we to seriously believe that nearly 2000 Architects & Engineers – with their reputations & careers at stake – are so utterly WRONG about the collapse of 3 skyscrapers while we of course are so crystal clear? Sheriff Arpaio with a lifetime of law enforcement -including 35 years in the FBI – and his experienced, professional team are also just a bunch of paranoid schmucks are they?

Why are the issues these people raising so unpalatable? Just follow the truth please, I don’t care about your precious “reputation” when those better positioned to judge are risking so much.
