Video: Terrorists already in place for plot?

posted at 12:01 pm on August 5, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

CBS News has more information on the global terrorism alert that has 19 US embassies shuttered, courtesy of former Bush administration national-security adviser Juan Zarate. The plot uncovered by intelligence services is similar to a 2010 plot against Europe that got stymied by its early exposure. In this case, though, the operatives of the current plot have already been dispatched, and may be taking orders from an innovative mastermind in al-Qaeda, who recently resurfaced in Yemen:

CBS News’ Bob Orr reports that according to sources, the intercepted chatter indicates a large scale attack may be imminent and the terrorists involved already have their orders and could be in place.

CBS News security analyst Juan Zarate, former Deputy National Security Adviser to President George W. Bush, told “CBS This Morning,” the plot is “reminiscent of the plot in 2010 … to attack European sites.

“People were worried about Mumbai-style attacks coming from the al Qaeda core,” Zarate said, adding, “It never materialized but officials were worried that they actually had operatives in place. And, that’s a great concern here.”

Zarate also answers the question about Obama administration claims in 2012 of decimating AQ. That only applies to the “core” AQ structure in Pakistan and Afghanistan, but the affiliates are filling the gap:

Zarate said that while Obama Administration has touted their “decapitation” of al Qaeda, this “decimation of al Qaeda” has been focused on “that core, the group in Pakistan and Afghanistan led by bin Laden and [Ayman al] Zawahiri.”

“The problem is you’ve had the rise of the al Qaeda affiliates, groups in Yemen, North Africa, East Africa,” he continued. “Those groups have taken up the strategic and operational mantle for al Qaeda and the group in Yemen has been the most dangerous because they want to hit the United States.”

The US and other Western nations now worry about new methods of deploying suicide bombers, thanks to the return of Ibrahim Hassan al-Asiri. The US had originally thought that Asiri was killed in the same drone strike that killed Anwar al-Awlaki, but Yemen had denied this, and they were clearly correct. Asiri has been credited with creating the notorious underwear bomb that failed to ignite on Christmas Day in 2009 and a similar bomb that worked earlier the same year in an attempt to assassinate a Saudi security chief. The assassin, Asiri’s brother, had the bomb inserted into his rectum, which killed the assassin instantly but failed to kill the target. Last year, Asiri was credited with designing a surgically-implanted bomb that could evade X-rays, although it has yet to be deployed.

The real question isn’t necessarily how to detect the surgically-implanted bomb, which the West has had at least seventeen months to research. It’s what Asiri has designed since that should have them worried.

Good thing the terrorists have no idea that we know something about what they’re up to. /s

But it hasn’t been even a year since we were told that Al Qaeda was on the run. What happened since then? I mean going from an organization reportedly decimated to where we are now should have been picked up by the intelligence communities, right? Wouldn’t all that NSA snooping have picked up on this the way they foiled all those terrorist attacks we can’t know anything about.

Or has somebody been lying to us?

Terrorists already in place for plot?

Meh, of course they are. They are all in place for a plot of some sort when the means to carry it out are provided and assembled the time, place and event are dictated.

Islam will always be at war with the West until its subdued or the West capitulates and submits and converts. Even then it’ll still be at war within itself and its conflicting sects.

Could also be a head fake. I’m sure there are enough sleeper cell jihadis already in the U.S. to pull off some coordinated sniper, suicide bomb, or Mumbai style attacks here, while our State Dept is peering blindly into a mirror, trying to find its own rear end.

Dun, dun, dun!

Uh huh. The panty bomber that got past security rather suspiciously. Just call this newly resurfaced guy the cobra commander already. This is getting to be the west running around like a chicken with its head cut off crying wolf.

Say, so what was that about all the new Benghazi revelations of gun running? Uhh, look! Terror plot! Shut it down! Maybe some of those Libyan guns/rockets got loose? They’re mad that they got sold a bomb casing full of used pinball machine parts?

Before the election…

“Al Qaeda’s core leadership has been decimated.”

“The goal that I set — to defeat al-Qaeda, and deny it a chance to rebuild — is within reach.”

“Al Qaeda’s Been Decimated And Osama Bin Laden Is Dead”

“And today, Al Qaeda is on the run and Osama bin Laden is dead.”

So I guess the smart thing to do would be to send troops to Yemen and then hunt down and kill al-Asiri and his other high-ranking cohorts. I’m sure Ron Paul and other libertarian true believers would object because doing so would violate Yemeni sovereignity and, you know, evil Jewish banker neocon plots and all that, but it seems to me al-Asiri and his pals won’t have time for elaborately orchestrated mass attacks on multiple targets if they’re too busy trying not to be killed. They have the initiative. We need to take it from them. Just a thought.

Assuming this threat is real…

My guess is the reason for all of these “leaks” is this admin ran out of options. It did not know what else to do.

Out of desperation it is “leaking” info hoping that might cause the terrorists to alter their plans. It is desperately hoping they might do something that will expose the plot or call off the attack.

That is assuming it is a real threat and that the admin is not deliberately blowing this out of proportion for political reasons.

This admin has a track record of downplaying terrorist attacks and bragging about how successfully it has been combating al Qaeda and destroying it as a threat. Why would it now suddenly be blowing an al Qaeda alarm to loudly?

And the senate shamnesty bill makes overstaying a visa in the future no longer a deportable event. “Add yet another layer of odd as Barack Obama spent the night at a boys only birthday party for himself at the presidential retreat of Camp David yesterday. Meanwhile, his top national security advisers at the White House were reportedly reviewing this latest, and potentially very serious, terror threat”.

The assassin, Asiri’s brother, had the bomb inserted into his rectum, which killed the assassin instantly but failed to kill the target.

Being a terrorist can be a real pain in the ass.

Look at one other aspect of this story – the terrorists could simply produce fake chatter to set off alarm bells and make the regime look like fools when they cry wolf..

And then they could do it again and again until no one listens to them…. And then…

The major competing theories (not a real threat, just a diversion; OR real threat with incompetent response) each have good rationales, but
I kind of like this one.

To be honest I’m suprised there hasnt been more attacks on U.S. soil. Everytime I go to a sporting event or a movie theater or a shopping mall I think about how easy it would be for someone to just set off a bomb.

I think the only thing the keeps this from happening here on a more regular basis is that regardless of how people feel about our borders I think our secruity forces do a good job at targeting and keeping the type of people who would carry out these attacks outside of our country.

We’ve seen with all these school shootings that all it takes is one person to cause the utmost havoc and it isnt much you can do to stop someone who is here who decides they want to injure people.

So I do give our Government credit for doing okay on that front.

Much better to adhere to the isolationist policies that the TruCon surrender-monkeys favor.
