Multi-nation travel alert and terror threat. What’s up with that?

posted at 10:01 am on August 3, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

When the story first broke yesterday evening, the number was in the teens. By the time this CNN story was put online it was 21. As I sit down to write this, they’ve increased it to 22. It’s the number of US embassies being shut down all across parts of Asia, North Africa and the Middle East in the wake of what are being described as imminent and credible threats from al Qaeda.

A global travel alert issued Friday by the State Department warned al Qaeda may launch attacks in the Middle East, North Africa and beyond in coming weeks, a threat that prompted Sunday’s closure of 21 embassies and consulates…

Various Western targets — not just those tied to the United States — are under threat, according to two U.S. officials.

According to three sources, the United States has information that al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula members are in the final stages of planning for an unspecified attack.

Jake Tapper is reporting that the focal point of the perceived threats is Yemen, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise given AQ trends over the past decade.

There still seems to be some debate going on this weekend, however, over the nature, the scale, or even the existence of the threat which prompted these actions. A few possibilities come to mind.

The first and most obvious is that this is exactly what it’s being depicted as. Al Qaeda planning attacks isn’t exactly breaking news. Al Zawahri has been rattling his sword again lately on a variety of topics, including blaming the United States for teaming up with the Egyptian army to dump Mursi and calling for attacks on American interests. Also, we’re coming up on the end of Ramadan, which a lot of bad actors in the affected region treat pretty much the same way as opening day of deer season over here. There’s bipartisan agreement on the Hill that the threat is solid and worth the precautions, and even Krauthammer seems to be giving it credence, though he does note that the situation is yet more proof that our foreign policy is a shambles.

But not everybody is so sure. At the opposite end of the spectrum we just might find some people who think this could be a ginned up diversion to draw attention away from the Administration’s other scandals. (“Hey, don’t laugh. It worked for Bush and Cheney“!) No matter how that may sound to you, it certainly didn’t give Glenn Greenwald much pause.

NYT on the new and exciting Terror plot:

“Some analysts and Congressional officials suggested Friday that emphasizing a terrorist threat now was a good way to divert attention from the uproar over the N.S.A.’s data-collection programs, and that if it showed the intercepts had uncovered a possible plot, even better.”

But who’s to say that there may not be a balance of the two ideas behind all of this, with one minor modification – all due apologies to Mssr. Greenwald. One of the biggest thorns still sticking out of Obama’s paw (and Hillary’s for that matter) is Benghazi. The last thing in the world he needs right now is yet another attack on yet another diplomatic outpost with yet more dead Americans to explain away. Even if the detected threat wasn’t quite as large as it’s currently being billed, or at least not as wide spread, would it be unexpected for the White House to totally overreact and shut down every embassy across a third of the planet while sounding sirens from every rooftop? That way, if something does blow up in our faces – literally as well as figuratively – he can have Jay out there at the podium lickety split to sadly inform us of what happened, immediately followed by a mournful, “we tried to warn you. We did everything we could.

I suppose we’ll have to let this one simmer a while longer to find out.

Doesn’t this send mixed signals to the American people? Just the other day the President was talking about how Bin Laden was dead and Al Queada was on the run.

Oh noes! Terrorists our politicians would not allow our military to kill and who were not swayed in the US’s favor (schockingly!) after all those billions in nation building are now (again ad nauseum) threatening to kill Americans. So, the SCOAMF and his p**** advisers, aided I’m sure by GOP leaders who told us last week how bad libertarian foreign policy principles are, principles advocated by Washington even, put out an international order for Americans to hide.

Obama has truly upgraded the terrorist threat level from yellow to hide.

There is much I disagree/d with both policy and politics of Pres Clinton and Bush, but at least they weren’t beta male p****** and didn’t turn the US into the butt of every previous to today French military joke of the last fifty years.

Herb on August 3, 2013 at 10:34 AM

Can you say ‘Distraction’?
NSA discovers potential terrorist plot.
Administration moves swiftly to foil plot, minimize damage to Americans, US interests.
If nothing happens, they were successful in stopping a terrorist attack.
If an attack does occur they can say their swift action minimized the damage of what could have been a huge disaster.

Even if the whole thing is just a made up distraction it will be High Fives, Awards and Prizes for the people that did little or nothing and the useful news idiots will run with the greatness and wisdom of the obama administration.

A couple of A few Several thoughts:
- If you count Benghazi as a “hostage crisis”, then all we really need are odd/even days to complete the Carter redux.
- And a bunny rabbit and some lust.
- If you don’t count it, then this might be the time….
- Have you ever noticed that the Japanese might protest Aug 6/9, but they never celebrate Dec 7?
- Does it truly appear that the top folks have finally figured out that not attacking during the “holy month” doesn’t gain us anything?
- Obviously there aren’t any loose ends at the moment.
- I still have trouble understanding why we shut embassies down to protect them; having locked gates certainly didn’t help the folks in Tehran, and the act of penetrating the walls of the compound is an act of war anyway.
- What information is coming out about the other scandals that they might want to turn our eyes from? (Was there a Friday dump? I didn’t hear about one.)
- Good point about “justifying” NSA work.

It’s interesting that this Administration always goes out of it’s way to lie about the obvious —Detroit and Al Qaeda for example. It seems to be a propaganda technique for reducing our cognitive disonance reaction.

From Ann Barnhardt:

5. A reader sent in this quote from KGB defector Yuri Bezmenov. A full interview of Bezmenov recorded in the early 1980′s (I think) is widely available on YouTube. The regime isn’t censoring these things because the vast majority of people are too stupid to listen to anything that lasts more than seven seconds. But, I’ll let Bezmenov sum it up. This is the KGB’s definition of “ideological subversion”:

“To change the perception of reality, of every American, to such an extent that despite the abundance of information no one is able to come to sensible conclusions in the interest of defending themselves, their families, their community, and their countrymen.”
YEP!

One of the biggest thorns still sticking out of Obama’s paw (and Hillary’s for that matter) is Benghazi.

That’s the first thing that came to my mind. The recent explosive revelations on CNN, the ongoing NSA scandal, then boom, there’s warnings a major catastrophe could be in the works. Of course, there could be an attack, but that was always the case. I just find it all a little too convenient and I don’t trust anything that comes from this administration anymore. Besides that, I’m thinking maybe it had a little to do with this little “luncheon” the president had with Queen Hillary recently.

This is a very transparent diversion.

What the media has not mentioned is this shutdown in unprecedented. It also is a historical ceding of power to AQ, which we’ve previously been told by the president is “on the run”.

Which is it? Are they masterful enough militarily to shut down 22 US Embassies and have personnel running for cover. Or are they retreating for greener pastures.

This is purely a political move which attempts to conflate the NSA scandal, Beghazi Scandal and change their contect into something positive.

It won’t work and looks like what it is- a bunch of scared, politicians hiding their cowardice and potentially criminal behavior behind a smokescreen.

When Obama and Hillary made the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda our new allies, and then basically put them in charge of embassy security in Libya, they actually thought it was a brilliant move on their parts…even bragged about it. To top that off, they armed them with small and large weapons, ammo, lots of money, and some TEN’s of THOUSANDS of modern shoulder fired ground to air missiles. Soon after that, they helped to arm them with chemical weapons so Obama and Hillary could claim that Bashar al-Assad was using chemical weapons against his own people.

Well, now that our new allies the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda have such weapons (especially the chemical ones), word must be filtering back that they plan on ‘returning them‘ to the Americans…so to speak.

Me smells Susan Rice’s 1st edict just in time for Dear Leader’s birthday as if that’s whats making al Qaeda restless. Ain’t she National Security adviser from the WH now?? What an embarrassment…plus she’s telling everyone worldwide what we’re gonna do.
i think that movie maker guy she said caused Benghazi is still in jail, isn’t he?

Obama spent the last few years trying to sell us the BS idea that the ‘War on ‘Terror’ was over, probably to justify putting Al Qaeda in charge of Libya, putting the Muslim Brotherhood in charge of Egypt, & running weapons to Jihadists in Syria. Ambassador Stevens & the other 3 Americans in Benghazi were abandon and betrayed – they had to die to keep the gun running a secret….but Obama found even he could not keep it from getting out. With his scandal revealed there is no longer a reason to continue to try to hide the fact that there is most certainly a war being fought, that under his ‘rule’ Al Qaeda & the Taliban have made a comeback, Libya is not only a safe haven but is now Al Qaeda’s own nation, Egypt was in the hands of terrorists for a while, & Obama is trying to ensure Syria follows suit. He does know – is smart enough to know – that if he allows another 20 embassies to be overrun – as he did last year on the anniversary of 9/11, if he fails to provide adequate security again & allows more Americans to be sacrificed not even the cowardice of our politicians can save him & his administration.

At the same time, as soon as incompetent Hillary Clinton is gone from heading up the State Department, Americans around the world are being protected again. Kerry has no thought of the Presidency in 2016 and is therefore not being distracted as Hillary was. While Hillary partied & waited her turn for the chance to be President, she abandoned aamericans to die…after all…’what did it matter’s?!

If nothing happens will Obama claim that he thwarted an attack and has AQ on the run again?
