Poll: Majority of voters support “Stand Your Ground” laws, 53/40

posted at 11:06 am on August 2, 2013 by Allahpundit

Feels like a surprise after so much media angst over the role of “Stand Your Ground” in Zimmerman’s acquittal — which was close to zero, by the way — but this isn’t a surprise really. Thirty-one states have SYG laws or a limited variation on them, the “Castle Doctrine” that limits SYG to your own home. Go figure that a majority of voters would endorse them when asked.

White voters support “Stand Your Ground” laws 57 – 37 percent while black voters are opposed 57 – 37 percent. Men support these laws 62 – 34 percent while women are divided with 44 percent in favor and 47 percent opposed. Support is 75 – 19 percent among Republicans and 57 – 37 percent among independent voters, with Democrats opposed 62 – 32 percent.

Voters in households where someone owns a gun back the laws 67 – 29 percent.

“‘Stand Your Ground’ splits the country sharply along political, gender and racial lines,” said Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“With these kinds of numbers, it’s unlikely the movement to repeal ‘Stand Your Ground’ will be successful in most of the country.”

I went looking on Google for polling on SYG before 2012 in order to see where Americans were on this before the Trayvon Martin shooting but it’s hard to come by. How many of the following numbers, then, are a reaction to the specifics of the Martin case (and the widespread albeit erroneous impression that SYG played a major role in his acquittal) and how many are a reaction to SYG in the abstract?

syg

The most striking thing: Only among blacks and Democrats is there sharp opposition to SYG. Every other demographic, including Hispanics and famously liberal young adults, shows either strong support for Stand Your Ground or, at worst, ambivalence. That makes me think that the results here are indeed more of an abstract consideration of SYG than a reaction to the Zimmerman verdict, which was opposed by Hispanics and younger voters. Quinnipiac’s phrasing of the question might have been key. Wisely, instead of tossing in the buzzy phrase “Stand Your Ground,” which many respondents would associate with Zimmerman and Martin, they simply stated the principle of SYG and asked people to react. In fact, arguably they didn’t state it clearly enough. “Stand Your Ground” doesn’t say you’re allowed to use deadly force if you feel “threatened,” it says you’re allowed to use deadly force if you’re threatened with death or great bodily harm. If Quinnipiac had stressed that last bit, the numbers here might have been more robust than they are. No problem for Obama, though: The SYG frenzy in the media is all about freaking out Democrats so that they’ll turn out in the midterms. Given the Democratic numbers here, that’s potentially fertile ground.

So why aren’t they mad at Trayvon for “standing his ground” and not retreating to his father’s girlfriend’s house?

‘Cuz, like, um, ya know, SYG applies to white people or sumthin.

We have the right to self-defense!

How dare anyone try to say that, unless we retreat and refrain from defending ourselves when viciously attacked, that we ought to be punished.

Violent thugs everywhere need to know that we innocent, law-abiding citizens are not just going to roll over and let criminals assault us and our families without fear of negative consequences.

Liberals have no concept of self defense. They tried painting SYG as somehow racist, which is odd. Saying that implies it is highly expect by them that an attacker is likely to be black, and black criminals must be protected. The victim doesn’t count.

A lot hung on the Zimmerman verdict for gun-grabbers and other liberals. To the minds of most liberals, self-defense usually involves a gun in the hands of a white person. So, if self-defense can be called into question, like Holder saying a victim has a ‘duty’ to retreat, then there’s no reason for people to own guns.

It was all tied together. Far as I’m concerned, we shouldn’t even be allowing this nonsense ‘national conversation’. A law-abiding citizen has right to defense of self, family, and property.

End of conversation.

It probably has something to do with the strange double standard reality we live in where it isn’t possible for blacks to be racist. Zimmerman should have taken his beating (and possibly even death) because Martin was standing his ground against gay rapists.

NotCoach on August 2, 2013 at 11:21 AM

Political correctness brain washing has not yet been able to persuade a majority of people they do not have a right to defend themselves when threatened with up close and personal violence and there are no cops around.

I wonder if those people opposed to this basic right of self-defense even know anything about these laws. There should be some kind of basic competency test for voting, IMO.

The ignorant dregs of society (of any race… race is meaningless to me) shouldn’t have equal votes as the rest of the citizens.

When dealing with stupidity and ignorance there is always a lot of fertile ground.

If they don’t use this it will be something else. They’ll just make something up, like a “war on women”. Whatever works at the time to engage irrational emotions and shut down rational thinking.

farsighted on August 2, 2013 at 11:27 AM

I’m willing to bet that when it’s explained, the majority in favor will be even higher.

Exactly right. As the lovely Ms. Jeantel testified, Trayvon Martin suspected Zimmerman of being a gay rapist. Had Trayvon’s disgusting, vicious assault on Zimmerman had a different conclusion and a different decedent, jurors might have been hearing about a “gay panic” defense.

Apparently the actual bigot was Trayvon. He was apparently paranoid about gays and was also find of using racist, anti-white slurs like “cracker.”

According to Jeantel, who knows better than you because you couldn’t possibly understand ‘the black experience’, the term ‘cracker’ isn’t racist.

So, you’re a racist for saying that. /

petefrt on August 2, 2013 at 11:40 AM

Stand your ground is rooted in Common Law. Common Law says the honest man has the right of way over the criminal The principle at stake here is “who owns the streets” the law abiding citizen or the street thug. The Progressives are looters and they support the criminal looters right to loot. They are one in the same as common street thugs.

jerryofva on August 2, 2013 at 11:46 AM

I cannot for the life of me fathom why someone would oppose SYG.

How could someone in their right mind want to make it EASIER for the government to throw them in jail after being a crime victim.

Its a psychotic mind set similar to those Islamic countries that punish a woman for being raped because she had sex outside of marriage.

Only among blacks and Democrats is there sharp opposition to SYG.

I suspect that’s tied in to their opposition to property rights. They don’t think the use of lethal force to protect one’s property should be allowed. I mean, you see it all the time whenever someone has the temerity to defend his home or business against thieves. That mindset has sadly bled into the rest of our society, to the point where Stand Your Ground laws and Castle laws are about defending one’s person rather than defending one’s property.

Property rights have been whittled away for decades, to the point where we own nearly nothing of value that doesn’t have some sort of tax lien on it by the government. If you have to pay somebody to keep what’s yours.. is it really yours???

Everyone listen up.
Anyone know the questions in this polling questionnaire?
Polls can give any answer that the questioner wants. GET IT?
Many moons ago Harlan Carter spoke at a luncheon and afterward there was the normal Q&A period. Carter being the recently retired NRA Executive V.P. said of polls (I paraphrase): ‘You can get any answer you wish because the way the questions are arranged and worded you can influence almost any opinion or community leanings to bring forth the opinions you intend to further your efforts.’ Folks here at HA, with enough experience might have seen Mr. Carter take on William F. Buckley on his TV show ‘Firing Line.’ He never lost a debate point. Harlan was THE reason for the surge of the NRA as a formidable political power that it is and remains to this day.
Polls are meant to sell stuff. Caveat emptor!

Stand your ground is everyones basic right.
But to better avoid a costly witch hunting trial like Zimmerman had. Its best to retreat at least a little bit, that way there is NO QUESTION you had the right to use deadly force.

And only stay for the cops if there are witness’s, if no witness’s then take off and get out of there. Because if the thug survives he will be looking for you along with his thug buddies

or his poor grieving mother who proclaims the thug was an aspiring rapper who loved his girlfriend and thier out of wed lock baby, and all those tats on him are not gang related.

Then just in case melt the gun with a torch.

Crying shame that 40% of the nation thinks you should be required to flee if given the opportunity.

No wonder this country’s going to shyte.

RedNewEnglander on August 2, 2013 at 1:08 PM

“Stand Your Ground” doesn’t say you’re allowed to use deadly force if you feel “threatened,” it says you’re allowed to use deadly force if you’re threatened with imminent death or great bodily harm.

FIFY The threat must be immediate, unlike much of the country pre-1900 or so where, if someone threatened your life or the life of a family member in front of witnesses, the next week you could hide behind a tree and snipe them dead and have a valid self-defense claim. Kept the street punks from making idle threats to women, children and alpha males.

Most, if not all, SYG also allow for the defense of innocent others, which, is a bit hairy to step into unless you saw the whole thing go down. There seems to be far more discussion of that little problem than about personal self-defense in the numerous classes I have attended.
