Hot new idea in Seattle government: Let’s drop the term “citizen” for not being inclusive enough

posted at 6:41 pm on August 2, 2013 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate, I thought the sub-moronic “chink in the armor” fake controversy on Wednesday would be the low point of this week’s sensitivity chronicles, but wait until Seattle’s civil-rights officer gets done explaining to you the perils of using the term “brown bag” to describe a brown bag. Civil rights in Seattle must be in glorious shape if this is what they’re doing with their time now. The perfect ending to a long, dumb, slow (with one very notable exception) summer news cycle.

If you have only a few minutes, skip the video clip below and listen to the radio interview with the officer instead. Exit question: Why not start referring to citizens as “the documented” instead?

Stupid is as stupid does. This the culmination of years of liberal democratic control. In Detroit it shows up in the poor finances, in Seattle, it shows up in the lack of common sense and usable grey matter.

Seattle should also ban “idiot” and “moron” for being too inclusive of their population.

One hopes this fellow doesn’t have kids. Can you imagine the laughter, scorn and derision they will face from other children particularly if they are in middle school? This guy will never be able to attend a child’s soccer game, baseball game or any other neighborhood affair for fear of mockery. I can picture his neighbors cutting him cold and laughing in his face, even in Seattle…at least if there is any justice. The way to deal with this sort of nonsense is shaming.

Mason on August 2, 2013 at 7:04 PM

And I’m enraged by the fact that Microsoft worked with the NSA and possibly other government agencies, (considering that they’re also working with Bloomburg), to spy on the users of Microsoft operating systems and applications. I hope that there will be a secure, encrypted, open-source OS that will take over the OS market and replace Microsoft and Apple in the coming years.

What if I’m offended by people trying to search for ways that their fellow, um, residents should be offended? If they get rid of “brown bag” as a test to ward off minorities, should we also avoid words like, “literacy,” “poll,” “test,” and “grandfather”?

Immigration Act of 1924

The new quotas for immigration from Southern and Eastern Europe were so restrictive that in 1924 there were more Italians, Czechs, Yugoslavs, Greeks, Lithuanians, Hungarians, Poles, Portuguese, Romanians, Spaniards, Chinese, and Japanese that left the United States than those who arrived as immigrants.

Maybe everyone could get together and cry in symphony?

Just for feces and rictus:

My father came from China, 12 years old, alone, a few years before the Great Depression. The American Extraterritoriality Laws were repealed in 1943 when he was 30. Which is kinda old to start being a soldier. He enlisted when he did not have to [had a defense job], fought to get into the Infantry [they wanted to make him a cook] and got his citizenship with Patton’s Third Army, as one of the first non-white squad leaders in the combat infantry.

Those of us Americans of Chinese ancestry gladly claim the title of citizen.

Mason on August 2, 2013 at 7:04 PM

To make shaming effective this fellow’s name must be permanently linked to this absurd policy on the internet.

The fellow who defended this insanity in the radio interview and in the video is named: Elliot Bronstein.

Elliot Bronstein of Seattle’s Office of Civil Rights recently sent an email to public information officers who work for the City of Seattle discouraging the terms “brown bag” and “citizen” from being used in informational releases.

According to Bronstein, the term “brown bag” originally referred to a person’s skin color, and if they were light enough to be allowed admission to an event. The term citizen, Bronstein said in his email sent months ago, is often used as an incorrect synonym for “members of the public.” However, not all members of the public are necessarily citizens, he said.

http://q13fox.com/2013/08/02/are-you-brown-bagging-it-city-warns-you-to-watch-your-mouth/

Elliot Bronstein should be given all due credit for this policy whenever you mention it on the web.

Isn’t the very name SEATTLE the epitome of someone that accommodated the English invaders from the East Coast?

And because Chief Seattle was an apologist for the Anglo European invaders he failed to protect the land from pollution and sold out his tribe…..should that kind of betrayal of the First people’s be honored?

Remove the name SEATTLE from this state.

It’s a cancer on the state and an insult to its original people’s.

“Sack Lunch”——”Lunch and Learn”

Those aren’t very inclusive terms. Doesn’t encouraging eating also necessarily encourage obesity? What about the feelings of those individuals that don’t want to be “pressured” into eating bagels all the time at the offices?

Hate is what these terms mean. Mr. Bronstein should just come up with some better terms for things like maybe changing “citizen” to “C1″, maybe “black” to “B1″ and maybe just change all terms to one letter with a number beside it.

He could call it the new PROGRESSIVE language.

No, but unlike you I recognize that it was in the past, and is over. And I recognize that unlike most countries in the world, especially including China, here mistakes can be corrected. The route to correction may be neither pleasant, nor easy. But the American people can be made to realize the need for correction and motivated to do it. That alone is one hell of a reason for loyalty to the country, if not the government.

And given the pervasiveness of the mistakes made politically for the last couple of decades; the pressure is building to correct them. And if the current functional one party system tries to block that correction, other routes will be found.

That wouldn’t be fair. You’d be disqualifying 47% of the population right off, which I’d argue is the point which Romney so eloquently missed. The percentage of takers being democrat? Well you can see their outrage at such a suggestion but no reason to point out the problem any longer than needed. Upsets the demotakers.
