Good news: 51% of Democrats ready to bail out Detroit

posted at 4:41 pm on August 2, 2013 by Allahpundit

We waste so much federal taxpayer money already. Can’t we waste just a little more?

The grim joke today on Twitter, per the news about U.S. embassies across the Middle East closing this weekend due to terror threats, is that “Al Qaeda is alive and Detroit is dead.” There’s your Hillary bumper sticker for campaign 2016.

qp

Overall it’s -24, which is why Obama and congressional Democrats (who aren’t from Michigan) are keeping a healthy distance from the idea. There’s an interesting age split in the Quinnipiac data that’s not shown in the graphic above, though. Among voters aged 45 and over, opposition to a bailout is above 60 percent while support lags in the 20th percentile. Among voters under 45, the spread is much narrower albeit still net negative. Voters 18-29 split 42/48 on bailing out Detroit while voters 30-44 split 40/50. Why that is, I don’t know. Presumably older Americans, always keenly aware of the budgetary risk to Medicare and Social Security, are more reluctant to dip into the federal till for something like this than younger voters are. (That’s interesting in itself since a big part of Detroit’s problem is not being able to meet its pension obligations. No sympathy among seniors nationally for the city’s older workers?) Or maybe the age demographic is simply a reflection of the racial split. Per the graph above, blacks and Latinos are the only demographics besides Democrats who support the bailout. Whites heavily oppose it. Younger age demographics have more nonwhite voters than older demographics do. Thus, a white/minority split should show up to a lesser degree as an old/young split — although, as I say, even younger voters oppose the bailout on balance. Ain’t happening.

But maybe … there’s a better way:

A few creative thinkers are proffering an innovative way to save Detroit: Let the city issue visas, on the condition that the immigrants live there, and only there. Imagine: a city filled with people who might have come from the United States’ shady black market or from an impoverished town in Mexico but are now where they are welcome and where they can work legally and apply for citizenship—in America’s No. 1 dying city.

It sounds like a radical social experiment, but it’s not so crazy. An influx of newcomers is precisely what Detroit needs. Meanwhile, 11 million undocumented immigrants are here already, washing dishes or harvesting crops, and a lot more want to come. It’s not hard to imagine that hundreds of thousands would jump at the chance to become legal residents, even if the price would be repopulating a discarded urban shell. Since 1960, the city’s population has fallen 67 percent.

Would they be able to work? The city could decree that employment is a requirement. If the jobs exist in the city, the immigrants will find them; they’ll figure it out. They already do that now, off the books. If the jobs are terrible, that’s OK, too. Remember, immigrants take jobs Americans won’t. Housing, obviously, would be no problem, with almost 100,000 vacant units in Detroit. Safety? In theory, that’s something the city could improve on if its tax base grows, although it’s not a guarantee.

Imagine the excitement of illegals to learn that they can finally escape from a dysfunctional, crime-ridden hellhole like Juarez to … Detroit, where the local pastime is arson. We’d probably save on fencing costs, at least: Instead of fencing people out along the length of the U.S. border, we’d fence ‘em in inside the Motor City as they desperately try to escape from the civic Thunderdome within. (Someone on Twitter compared it to “District 9.”) I think I could be talked into considering it, just because it’d be an experiment in the Jeb Bush/Paul Ryan theory that illegals are ultimately a big boon to the welfare state insofar as they instantly broaden the tax base. Detroit can’t pay pensions? Add a million young new residents who aren’t picky about what jobs they take and let’s see if it helps. And what happens in 40 years when illegals reach retirement age and their benefits come due? Hopefully a very elderly Bush and Ryan will be around to help figure it out. (Probable solution: A whole new round of amnesty!) Exit question: How many years realistically would illegals be required to live and work in America’s armpit before being allowed to move away to a more livable city? Good lord, people — I oppose amnesty as much as anyone, but sentencing “the undocumented” to live in Detroit is probably an Eighth Amendment violation. A little humanity, please.

If the Libs would agree to give up all their Federally subsidized school loans, art endowments, cowboy poetry, useless collegiate studies, and about 1,000 other stupid, useless crap, then let’s do it.

But I know there’s no way of that happening. The libs would never give up all their Gravy to save a city.

Good thing you didn’t quote “undocumented citizens” because it is soon an illegal word in Seattle.

Why would illegals work in Detroit if they can get on welfare , as they do in rest of the country ? I mean why would they bust their @$$es when they can lead comfortable lives just by breeding ?

As I said in Headlines, we’re going to send Detroit money. The question is how much. They’re going to want between $10B and $20B. If we give them something even within an order of magnitude of that, it’s game over.

Any Dem who wants to bail out Detroit should be forced to live there.

Move ‘em all to Detroit. It’s a Dem wonder-city, after all.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on August 2, 2013 at 4:53 PM

Bail out Detroit and that would give a green light to all the other cities to continue their reckless spending until they are bailed out too, and once they were bailed out the cities would just start all over with another round of reckless spending. Until the whole country is completely hopelessly bankrupted.

Midas on August 2, 2013 at 4:55 PM

here’s the plan for Detroit. Hold the cards to your chest, and wait for the court decisions on the pension claims. If the pensioners win then most of the operating budget of Detroit must go to them.

So..no police, health, teachers…nothing…..no how can you turn your back on that? We are not a third world country…we take care of our people

Which, I’m guessing will be 2 years after 2 million illegals move in to Detroit !

Businesses and productive taxpayers have left Detroit because they don’t like being prey to predatory government, and prey to criminals.

The government of Detroit and the criminals have over-hunted their environment. The proposal to send illegal aliens to Detroit sounds like a re-stocking program. It sounds like Fawn Johnson wants to add more prey to the environment so the predators don’t starve.

Here’s why: MORAL HAZARD.

If the fed is bailing out spendthift cities, then I’m voting for every possible good thing for my little city. Then when we’re broke, all the good citizens of every other city can ante up and bail my city out. What could be better than than?

LilyBart on August 2, 2013 at 5:03 PM

I say let them. There were (all off the top of my head so my numbers might be off, but not by too much) 60M obama voters and Det is 29B in debt? Well if 51% of those guys and girls kick in, they can bail out Det for less than $1000 each.

Good news democrats, I just looked it up, it’s only 18B. That’s less than $600 each for you wannabe bail outers.

traye on August 2, 2013 at 5:04 PM

I’ll bet that percentage would change drastically if the bailout were tied to cuts in other government spending like food stamps, welfare, medicare, etc. Those who are dependant on the government want to believe the government will always bail them out, but if it means sacrifice on their part they will quickly oppose any spending that will cut their benefits.

Only here’s the problem. They will pay, and pay dearly. They’ll pay in a lower standard of living, job insecurity or cronic unemployment, and increased crime & social unrest as the ecomony falters.

The bankruptcy process should eliminate the City of Detroit as an entity, fire all city politicians and employees, and make it all into unincorporated territory in the state of Michigan.

Open it to the first 1,000,000 that apply, approximating the number of departed residents.Make them live in Detroit. Give every household of 6 or more (or whatever size makes the number of households and vacant houses match up) one of the $1 houses that needs repair. They don’t have to pay property taxes for two years. Anyone left in the city with some kind of home repair business can hire a few and train them as apprentices.

They can bulldoze the unrepairable places and farm the land. They can salvage any abandoned architectural remnants of value and sell them. They can teach Spanish to the native population.

There should NEVER be a reward for, or allowance of continuation of, the malfeasance, the mismanagement, the rank graft and corruption, the destruction, that resulted from over four decades of progressive policy implementation and governance.

If one city gets a massive federal bailout… all of them will demand equal treatment under the law.

The American tax payer should never be punished for the misdeeds and stupidity of others. The tax payer has been treated like a private slush fund by those who would impose ruinous policy on this nation, give away funds to buy favors or services, and implement their private ‘vision’ at the expense of others. It cannot continue.

Even if every tax paying American was taxed into penury, it wouldn’t pay for the excesses of the LEFT.

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on August 2, 2013 at 5:41 PM

I agree.

What do we call an area where people have been rounded up and forced to live and work?

We call that area a prison camp. Or… sometimes…a internment camp… or a concentration camp… or… a reservation.

Is the suggestion being put about recently, that we place illegal aliens in Detroit to live and work, really that we make of Detroit a vast prison complex where people who have entered the nation illegally or overstayed their visas be forced to live and work to serve the end of ‘revitalizing’ Detroit?

To drop a million or so people into Detroit, an area that by all descriptions, Left and Right, has become a wasteland, a battlefield, a ruin of a city, without adequate housing, sanitation, water, utilities, police, and emergency services, doesn’t sound like free market principles to me. It doesn’t sound liberal or progressive principles to me, either. It certainly doesn’t sound like conservative principles to me. It doesn’t sound particularly humanitarian to me. It doesn’t even sound particularly American to me.

Illegal aliens have broken our laws and the consequences for that are clearly defined in our existing federal immigration laws. They are to be deported. Not enslaved to provide labor and services in an area that has, though every form of idiocy, graft, corruption, and progressive policy and governance, become a wasteland…and a massive political embarrassment to the LEFT.

They could solve their pension woes in a similar manner: Only pay full pensions to those who are Detroit residents. 50% if you live outside the city; 10% if you live out of state.

KenInIL on August 2, 2013 at 7:04 PM

Just issue each Detroit resident without a recent felony conviction an AR-15 or 12 Gauge shotgun and 1000 rounds of ammo and give them a 3-day training courser in its use.
Then, start emptying prisons into Detroit. Start with minimum security prisoners first. If they last six months without committing a crime (or getting caught/shot), then they get their gun and ammo.
Then move up to medium security prisoners. At the end of six months, they get their guns…and all the cops pull out and stop answering calls; and serve to guard the gates to the city.
And the maximum security prisoners are sent in.
Then, the city is left to its own devices for two years.
If, at the end of two years, the city has not worked out its problems and become a civilized place…STAND OFF AND NUKE IT FROM ORBIT!

Make a reality show called ‘Escape from the City of Detroit’.

Every week you release five teams of two into the heart of the city with nothing but the clothes on their backs. Their mission is to make it safely to the city limits.
The pairs would be composed of a liberal celebrity and a Democrat politician. For the opening show, I would have this lineup:

Robert Redford + Nancy Pelosi
Janeane Garafolo + Chuck Schumer
Jim Carey + Diane Feinstein
Ed Asner + Janet Napolitano
David Letterman + Barbara Boxer

Put it on Pay per View and use the profits for the bailout.

No sympathy among seniors nationally for the city’s older workers?) Or maybe the age demographic is simply a reflection of the racial split.

Or maybe it’s the fact that we (“older workers”) have been screaming that this was going to happen (for decades now.). And our response is for Detroit to get bent. You did it, you fix it.

Big dem-machine cities (and states) have been crowing forever about how they send more to the feds than they get back. Well now that they’ve run out their rich people, and killed their industries, the “chickens have come home to roost”.
