Newspaper fires editor for “Take your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President” headline

posted at 5:41 pm on August 1, 2013 by Allahpundit

Not even a reprimand first, huh? Here’s hoping, at least, that some White House water-carrier like Media Matters threatened the paper with a boycott before it acted. It’s too depressing to think that the publisher might have canned him on his own initiative, without any pressure from the pretend-outrage industry, just because Johnson got a step too close to a Johnny Paycheck song title in writing about Bambi.

Alternate headline stolen from Ace: “‘Free Press’ not so free.”

Free Press editor Drew Johnson has been terminated after placing a headline on an editorial outside of normal editing procedures.

Johnson’s headline, “Take your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President: Your policies have harmed Chattanooga enough,” appeared on the Free Press page Tuesday, the day President Barack Obama visited the city.

The headline was inappropriate for this newspaper. It was not the original headline approved for publication, and Johnson violated the normal editing process when he changed the headline. The newspaper’s decision to terminate Johnson had nothing to do with the content of the editorial, which criticized the president’s job creation ideas and Chattanooga’s Smart Grid. The Free Press page has often printed editorials critical of the president and his policies.

He violated the editing process? That’s not what Johnson says:

There’s more where that came from on his Twitter feed, where he mentions that he’s getting married in two weeks — something that must have been known inside the paper but evidently didn’t deter them from exacting the death penalty instead of suspending him for a few days. And of course, as usually happens when the Internet notices that someone’s paid a steep price for his political leanings, people on Johnson’s side are rallying to him. News of his firing is linked on Drudge as I write this; he’ll be on Glenn Beck’s Blaze network tonight at 6 p.m. too. With any luck, some righty media outlet will snap him up before the week’s out.

Exit question: Since when are Tennesseans shy about telling Obama to shove it?

Dr. Carlo Lombardi on August 1, 2013 at 6:15 PM

This is your government: Spying on you and making sure that you never learn the truth about anything.

‘CNN has uncovered exclusive new information about what is allegedly happening at the CIA, in the wake of the deadly Benghazi terror attack.

Four Americans, including Ambassador Christopher Stevens, were killed in the assault by armed militants last September 11 in eastern Libya.

Sources now tell CNN dozens of people working for the CIA were on the ground that night, and that the agency is going to great lengths to make sure whatever it was doing, remains a secret.

CNN has learned the CIA is involved in what one source calls an unprecedented attempt to keep the spy agency’s Benghazi secrets from ever leaking out.

Since January, some CIA operatives involved in the agency’s missions in Libya, have been subjected to frequent, even monthly polygraph examinations, according to a source with deep inside knowledge of the agency’s workings.

The goal of the questioning, according to sources, is to find out if anyone is talking to the media or Congress.

It is being described as pure intimidation, with the threat that any unauthorized CIA employee who leaks information could face the end of his or her career.

In exclusive communications obtained by CNN, one insider writes, “You don’t jeopardize yourself, you jeopardize your family as well.”

Another says, “You have no idea the amount of pressure being brought to bear on anyone with knowledge of this operation.”

“Agency employees typically are polygraphed every three to four years. Never more than that,” said former CIA operative and CNN analyst Robert Baer.

In other words, the rate of the kind of polygraphs alleged by sources is rare.

“If somebody is being polygraphed every month, or every two months it’s called an issue polygraph, and that means that the polygraph division suspects something, or they’re looking for something, or they’re on a fishing expedition. But it’s absolutely not routine at all to be polygraphed monthly, or bi-monthly,” said Baer.

A source now tells CNN that number was 35, with as many as seven wounded, some seriously.

While it is still not known how many of them were CIA, a source tells CNN that 21 Americans were working in the building known as the annex, believed to be run by the agency.

The lack of information and pressure to silence CIA operatives is disturbing to U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf, whose district includes CIA headquarters in Langley, Virginia.

“I think it is a form of a cover-up, and I think it’s an attempt to push it under the rug, and I think the American people are feeling the same way,” said the Republican.

“We should have the people who were on the scene come in, testify under oath, do it publicly, and lay it out. And there really isn’t any national security issue involved with regards to that,” he said.

Wolf has repeatedly gone to the House floor, asking for a select committee to be set-up, a Watergate-style probe involving several intelligence committee investigators assigned to get to the bottom of the failures that took place in Benghazi, and find out just what the State Department and CIA were doing there.’

Lawmakers also want to about know the weapons in Libya, and what happened to them.

Speculation on Capitol Hill has included the possibility the U.S. agencies operating in Benghazi were secretly helping to move surface-to-air missiles out of Libya, through Turkey, and into the hands of Syrian rebels.

It is clear that two U.S. agencies were operating in Benghazi, one was the State Department, and the other was the CIA.

The State Department told CNN in an e-mail that it was only helping the new Libyan government destroy weapons deemed “damaged, aged or too unsafe retain,” and that it was not involved in any transfer of weapons to other countries.

But the State Department also clearly told CNN, they “can’t speak for any other agencies.”

The CIA would not comment on whether it was involved in the transfer of any weapons.

Impeachable, if true.

09.06.12: The Libyan-flagged vessel, the Al Entisar (which means ‘The Victory’) that had departed from Benghazi sails into the Turkish port of Iskenderun — 35 miles from the Syrian border. While its manifest claims that it is carrying humanitarian supplies, a search of the vessel reveals 400 tonnes of American-made ‘SAM-7 surface-to-air anti-craft missiles and rocket-propelled grenades (RPGs).’ The Intisaar is detained in Iskenderun. The unofficial reason for Stevens to be there…he was promised to be paid back for his helping out in the Quadaffi overthrow…with boys…he wanted to combines pleasure with ‘business’, shady business, and he died in the process…while obama was doing same…in the WH, but he went to Vegas the next day.

Schadenfreude on August 1, 2013 at 6:32 PM

Can’t criticize The One too much. Only approved criticism is allowed.

The MSM doesn’t even try to hide their bias anymore.

Rather they now try to paint people who disagree with them as extremists. The media — all of it including MSM “news” sources, movies, TV shows, music, etc. — assume they represent the majority of “normal” people and portray their views as the views that most “normal” people hold. Political correctness rules with an iron hand on universities and in the media.

Next step, they will say people who disagree with them suffer from mental illness. We’ve already seen some opening salvos on this front on gun rights and criticism of SSM. Most recent high profile example, Zimmerman.

Finally, it will be off to the re-education camps if you disagree with them. How many fingers, Winston? To some extent they already do this in K-12 public schools.

In parallel all along they way they try to criminalize speech they do not agree with. Hate crimes already do this. In other countries it is against the law to say offensive things about this or that group of people, and they get to decide was is offensive. Certain words are only acceptable when used by certain people, and so on and so forth.

This will not end well.

We have allowed Mr. Johnson to write his opinion freely and without censorship during the time he worked here.
He was not terminated for his opinion about the president. He was terminated for violating our editing and operating policies. He did so in order to use a headline that we consider inappropriate. There are many ways to express disagreement about the president’s policies without being crude. I assure you the Times Free Press is champion of the First Amendment. We will continue to publish a wide range of political viewpoints.

Freedom of the press doesn’t mean you have a right to defy the editorial demands of your superiors.

libfreeordie on August 1, 2013 at 6:09 PM

Did you even bother to read the tweets Allah included from the dude fired? He said there was no policy in place when he “defied the editorial demands”. The policy was applied retroactively.

Del Dolemonte on August 1, 2013 at 6:40 PM

Freedom of the press doesn’t mean you have a right to defy the editorial demands of your superiors. It means the government can not restrict a free press.

libfreeordie on August 1, 2013 at 6:09 PM

His superiors didn’t make editorial demands of him. There was no policy to break until after people stated complaining, then it was applied retroactively.

Resist We Much on August 1, 2013 at 6:31 PM

But you see, RWM…we aren’t still basking in the glow of the radiance of THE ONE. we can actually SEE that there are weapons in Libya literally up for grabs and sale to the highest bidder, and we actually noticed FAST AND FURIOUS and the deaths of some 200 Mexican citizens and several American citizens ( that we know of so far) as a direct result of that ‘gun walking’ operation performed by our own federal government through its various agencies. We read the news from multiple sources and make up our own minds about what we find there. We certainly don’t just tune in to one network and believe whatever the talking heads there tell us to believe…to be fed on a diet of hogwash and whitewash…thereby condemning ourselves to willful perpetual ignorance…like the LEFT.

So its not surprising to any of us that we asked those questions. The NEED to ask them was obvious to all of us.

The LEFT, however, still blinded by the glow of the halo they placed on their ‘Messiah’…and their own biases, prejudices, and bigotry… can’t.

Poor things. Poor, poor, things.

Drew Johnson — The policy I “broke” did not exist when I “broke” it.

It was a double secret policy. You should have been able to guess it existed. Check your political correctness handbook and try to get in the spirit of the thing. Read between the lines. All comrades should study that little book so they can acquire this skill.

AP has a thread up on the CIA revelation, which s/b no surprise if the media were actually working, like the fired person was.

Of course not.

Just saw this over on Daily Caller and did not read the entire thread here. Is there anyone setting up a “relief fund” for the editor to show our solidarity? I wouldn’t mind sending him $10 or so.
