Newspaper fires editor for “Take your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President” headline

posted at 5:41 pm on August 1, 2013 by Allahpundit

Not even a reprimand first, huh? Here’s hoping, at least, that some White House water-carrier like Media Matters threatened the paper with a boycott before it acted. It’s too depressing to think that the publisher might have canned him on his own initiative, without any pressure from the pretend-outrage industry, just because Johnson got a step too close to a Johnny Paycheck song title in writing about Bambi.

Alternate headline stolen from Ace: “‘Free Press’ not so free.”

Free Press editor Drew Johnson has been terminated after placing a headline on an editorial outside of normal editing procedures.

Johnson’s headline, “Take your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President: Your policies have harmed Chattanooga enough,” appeared on the Free Press page Tuesday, the day President Barack Obama visited the city.

The headline was inappropriate for this newspaper. It was not the original headline approved for publication, and Johnson violated the normal editing process when he changed the headline. The newspaper’s decision to terminate Johnson had nothing to do with the content of the editorial, which criticized the president’s job creation ideas and Chattanooga’s Smart Grid. The Free Press page has often printed editorials critical of the president and his policies.

He violated the editing process? That’s not what Johnson says:

There’s more where that came from on his Twitter feed, where he mentions that he’s getting married in two weeks — something that must have been known inside the paper but evidently didn’t deter them from exacting the death penalty instead of suspending him for a few days. And of course, as usually happens when the Internet notices that someone’s paid a steep price for his political leanings, people on Johnson’s side are rallying to him. News of his firing is linked on Drudge as I write this; he’ll be on Glenn Beck’s Blaze network tonight at 6 p.m. too. With any luck, some righty media outlet will snap him up before the week’s out.

Exit question: Since when are Tennesseans shy about telling Obama to shove it?

When the Ambassador and others were killed there were a lot of rumors that he was ordered to Benghazi….the plan was supposed to be that he would be kidnapped and then exchanged for the Blind Sheik. Something Obama wanted to do and hadn’t found a way without political blowback. This plan was supposed to solve that issue. Did anyone else remember hearing about this in the early days following 9/11/12? It has an element of truth to it and sounds like something this administration would do…. collateral damage.

I can’t believe you even SAID that! LOOK who’s talkin’!

Hypocrisy abounds!

williamg on August 1, 2013 at 6:56 PM

We have allowed Mr. Johnson to write his opinion freely and without censorship during the time he worked here.
He was not terminated for his opinion about the president. He was terminated for violating our editing and operating policies. He did so in order to use a headline that we consider inappropriate. There are many ways to express disagreement about the president’s policies without being crude. I assure you the Times Free Press is champion of the First Amendment. We will continue to publish a wide range of political viewpoints.

Posted, not for avagreen, but for accuracy and HA history.

The policy I “broke” did not exist when I “broke” it. It was created after people complained about the headline & was applied retroactively.

— Drew Johnson (@Drews_Views) August 1, 2013

Any time the paper wanted to change the headline online (which is how most people read the editorial), they could’ve.

“There are many ways to express disagreement about the president’s policies without being crude.”

Like distorting and misrepresenting the facts. Which is what the Chattanooga Times Free Press does routinely when a Republican is in the White House. The Times Free Press is a liberal rag. (And for those who are unfamiliar with Tennessee politics, Chattanooga is a bluish-purple island in a sea of red. The mayor is a democrat and so is most of the city council.)

“We will continue to publish a wide range of political viewpoints.”

Of course. The whole spectrum, from infra-liberal to ultra-liberal.

RightKlik on August 1, 2013 at 7:51 PM

What a good man. Speaking the truth and getting fired for it. I hope some conservative blog gets him a job real soon.

sadsushi on August 1, 2013 at 8:00 PM

Wow, people just have to complain and the paper fires the editor?

I guess the stupid woman that created the donut in honor of the rat-eared coward is more in line with what the liberals wanted.

Freedom of the press doesn’t mean you have a right to defy the editorial demands of your superiors.

libfreeordie on August 1, 2013 at 6:09 PM

Absolutely correct, but if you read the small print, their demands were ex post facto.

The veneer of fairness that said superiors had nurtured is definitely been scratched off.

profitsbeard on August 2, 2013 at 12:26 AM

“Take this job and shove it” is considered crude these days?

Sorry, although it’s not a headline that I would write, that doesn’t even register on my ‘crude meter’ in this day and age where crude/rude is the context of many in the MSM. With a play on an old song that is recognized by most readers. What does register is that criticism of Our Dear Leader is not tolerated by today’s media. Ergo the editor received a firing not a finger waggle.

Somebody give this man a real job.

So.. once again the party of anything goes, shows they are all about free speech, as long as it’s 100% in agreement with them, otherwise, it’s the chopping block for your freedom to voice your opinion..

They just can’t stop themselves, I read some of his twitter feed, the trolls who attacked him are the crudest low rent cave dwellers around, haven’t seen such open hatred in a while.. and not in the least ashamed they hate, they wallow in it..

the left in America is collectively insane.

They always lie, when the truth is easy to find
They always scream for unity as they pile hate on us..
They scream racist, instead of the more honest, “shut up”..
They push the same failed ideas that FDR did, and call us regressive..

hopeless..

an intelligent thinker adapts to new information and the times they live in, then.. there are leftists..

Without knowing a single thing about this except the shocking headline, let me guess–in addition to being male, the fired editor is white, right?

MaiDee on August 2, 2013 at 8:59 AM

During his speech, Obama again took credit for saving the auto industry and praised General Motors (which had to be bailed out with tax dollars because of the company’s unsound business practices) and the UAW (which caused much of GM’s financial woes) for creating jobs in the formerly shuttered Saturn plant in Spring Hill, Tenn.

The lengths to which Obama went to avoid mentioning the thriving VW plant that sits down the street from the Amazon facility where he delivered his speech was stupefying.

Volkswagen’s Chattanooga assembly plant is thriving without his policies — and without the UAW. As a result, he must’ve figured there was no use in celebrating the company or its employees. It was a truly tacky move.

They may have fired Mr. Johnson, but someone there still has a brain.

unclesmrgol on August 2, 2013 at 9:04 AM

Remember, if you feel you must publicly criticize The One, you must do so in as mild a fashion as possible, and you must mention Republicans several time during your criticism.

Of course, it’s best if you just avoid criticizing Him at all.

Johnson violated both these rules. Hence, he lost his job.

Not really much I could dig up quickly on his politics. he seems like a straightforward business and marketing guy. It’s possible the firing came from somewhere a bit further down the rung. Hard to say at this point. Nevertheless, he should be contacted enough times to let him know that the general public considers the firing inappropriate.

I know this is an old story by now, but since I posted my first email and his response yesterday, just thought I’d post the response to my second email that I got from the President of Free Press, Jason Taylor, on this subject today:.

On Aug 2, 2013, at 1:16 PM,I wrote:

I understand that these “rules” were written after the fact and didn’t even exist at the time the opinion piece was written.

Is this true?

Taylor’s response later today:

Not at all.

Since he took the time to answer at all to this spurious email from me….this seems to be is a rather tepid response to a [false] “rumor” and that if I’d been the subject of such a rumor, I’d had more to say in some in some kind of defense. ?? I’m sure he’s heard this rumor long b/f I wrote him, especially when this is the story that Drew is putting out.

I just find it strange.

Everybody knows that Barack Obama has no bodily orifice where the sun don’t shine, therefore telling him to “shove it” is inapplicable.

The Presidency is only entitled to respect when it’s occupied by a Democrat.
