Juror B29 was framed… sort of

posted at 10:01 am on July 27, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

Allahpundit took a first look at the big Juror B29 Breaking News on Thursday, and like many of us, was left scratching his head. The headlines which showed up all across the media all focused on one money line from ABC’s big interview with “Maddy” because it was just so gosh darned irresistible. “George Zimmerman Got Away With Murder.”

Another person who jumped on that headline, albeit from a different angle, was Dr. James Joyner. That’s not surprising given the number of others who reported the “news” pretty much as presented by ABC. But now he’s had time to look over the situation and found that there was a lot more (or perhaps less) to the truncated interview clips than met the eye. Joyner points us to William Saletan, who takes a look at the unedited interview and determines, “The media are reporting that a juror says Zimmerman is guilty of murder. That’s not true.“

The reports are based on an ABC News interview with Juror B29, the sole nonwhite juror. She has identified herself only by her first name, Maddy. She’s been framed as the woman who was bullied out of voting to convict Zimmerman. But that’s not true. She stands by the verdict. She yielded to the evidence and the law, not to bullying. She thinks Zimmerman was morally culpable but not legally guilty. And she wants us to distinguish between this trial and larger questions of race and justice.

ABC News hasn’t posted a full unedited video or transcript of the interview. The video that has been broadcast—on World News Tonight, Nightline, and Good Morning America—has been cut and spliced in different ways, often so artfully that the transitions appear continuous. So beware what you’re seeing. But the video that’s available already shows, on closer inspection, that Maddy has been manipulated and misrepresented.

From Joyner:

The bottom line is that ABC News exploited “the only minority of the Zimmerman jury,” attempted to take advantage of someone not accustomed to being on television or otherwise expressing herself publicly, and then selectively edited the tape when they were unsuccessful in getting the story they wanted. Other outlets, including “the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and dozens of other newspapers” were duped along with me.

This is truly shameful conduct on the part of a news division once home to giants like John Cameron Swayze, Frank Reynolds, Harry Reasoner, David Brinkley, and Peter Jennings.

Saletan makes a number of pretty much unassailable points on this, so read that entire piece. One of the chief ones is that the top, link baiting quote from the interview – that Zimmerman “got away with murder” – was, as the author puts it, “put in her mouth.” If you saw the highlights from the interview playing endlessly on ABC, CNN and NBC – to name only a few – you saw Maddy reciting that line as if it was her heartfelt conclusion in a moment of juror’s remorse. But when you watch the full interview, (which I’ll include below for your own judgement) you’ll see what really happened. The “journalist” in question fed her that line word for word, prefaced with the ubiquitous, “some people are saying…” for good measure, and then asking B29 to respond. She pauses for quite a while, starts, stops, and then repeats the line the interviewer had said, as if judging how it sat on her tongue. Only then does she add in her own thoughts about how the verdict was legal and that she stands by it, but morally she feels that Zimmerman may have to answer to God for the incident. And even there she clearly seems to allow that none of us know what really happened and aren’t in a position to judge.

I agree with Dr. Joyner that this was some pretty shameful editing on the part of ABC for the many instances where they used the footage, and the rest of the networks are equally culpable for lapping it up. Anyway, as I indicated above, here’s the full clip. Decide for yourself.

It upsets me she and so many others don’t touch on the salient feature of the confrontation — Zimmerman was on his back, Martin on top of him, smashing in his head, broke his nose. To me, this is the primary point. And people gloss over it like it didn’t happen. Instead, like this juror, they key in on feelings and sentiment instead.

I’m still sorting through all of this. No surprise ABC tried to spin it and edit it to make it look as bad as possible for Zimmerman. We now seem to be in “what did she really mean?” territory. Only B29 knows what she “really meant”.

IMO it is hard to dance around this statement.

“As much as we were trying to find this man guilty…

Which is frightening. This is not how a jury is supposed to function. This statement practically presumes guilt.

And, if B29 did not like how a question was worded she was free to say that.

Finally, she was sitting next to attorney throughout the interview (why did she need an attorney there and who is paying his fees?). If she has issues with how ABC represented her in the edited video of the interview and she wants to clear it up, she can have her attorney prepare a statement that says what she wants to say, sign it, and release it.

But maybe we’ll have to wait until the book comes out for that.

First of all – this statement is laughable:

“This is truly shameful conduct on the part of a news division once home to giants like John Cameron Swayze, Frank Reynolds, Harry Reasoner, David Brinkley, and Peter Jennings.” They did the same thing in their day.
We just didn’t know it because we did not have any sources to tell us differently.

Secondly, I always mistrust the intentions of a juror who feels the need to give interviews in order to receive their 15 minutes of fame. I wouldn’t believe a word she said either way.

As far as the Zimmerman trial is concerned, the facts fortunately got in the way of the lefty agenda to gin up support for the race war Obama wants in this country. Come on, it is so obvious! (as the wart on your nose, my grandmother used to say).

He is dividing us so the socialist/Marxist/communist agenda can take over our country.

Today, narratives are trumping reality in a big way. With current information technologies I was hoping reality would start getting an edge. But no. False narratives are ruling the day. Of course the MSM are going to edit tapes and videos, and crop photos. Their narrative has to be maintained, because they’re invested so heavily in it they can’t tolerate or risk anything disproving it. They’re almost like an alcoholic who refuses to believe he has a problem, and he disregards any evidence that proves it.

I also believe it sticks in the craw of media folks when they do everything they can to bring about a desired result, only to have it stopped cold by better-knowing people who are involved in the situation. Much rode on the outcome of the Zimmerman trial: race relations and all that is attached (like reparations), guns, the concept of self-defense (which also involves use of guns), and how far self-defense ‘should be allowed’.

The Left can’t handle the defeat the Zimmerman trial handed them — and it was a big one. I think they’re pushing this so hard is because they’re hoping that the next time, more people will have been convinced to come to their side. There is a desired result, liberals will do everything to get it.

Lies and distortions are their ace-in-the-hole, so they won’t stop any time soon.

If there were any moral and real ‘street’ justice in this world, ABC, MSNBC, NBC, CNN, the New York Times, and the rest of the despicable MSM, which convicted George Zimmerman long before he stood trial, would not only be bankrupted and universally discredited, all of their so-called ‘journalists’ would be in public stockades where we could throw rotten tomatoes at these unAmerican, lying, race-baiting, divisive, and utterly corrupt cretins.

Let it never again be allowed to stand the patently false claim that the MSM doesn’t have a hard left-wing political and social biases. If the Zimmerman case proves anything, it proves beyond ANY doubt that the MSM has absolutely no shame and that it will do anything to forward its ‘Progressive’ ideology, which is, in all actuality, as reactionary and vile as that preached by one of the most prominent media figures in Progressive history, the extraordinarily racist, treasonous, and hateful Josephus Daniels, the editor of North Carolina’s Raleigh News & Observer.

PS: Just as many of us don’t hold Edward Snowden up as an American hero because we are grateful that we’ve learned more about what the government is doing to us, you don’t actually need to be a Zimmerman fangirl/boy to be sickened by the MSM’s shameful behaviour in the case. The Founders gave the press special constitutional rights BECAUSE they were supposed to report honestly without fear of reprisal. If they cannot or will not be merchants of truth, then, perhaps, they need to lose some of those protections.

Ok, I apologize for my remarks on the previous thread…and I’ll grant recognition of “Maddy” for her intelligence and decency in following the letter of the law, and the letter of the jury instructions and not letting emotions trump her legal obligation.

Now, about Trayvon’s mother….at the National Urban League…telling America (via the networks) that her son was murdered because of a law, and all those who applauded her remarks about how poor innocent little Trayvon was wantonly hunted down, stalked, and murdered because of that racist nasty Florida stand your ground law…

Try to bash, maim, beat down or kill what you “feel” is a gay man…and that man happens to have a gun…too bad. You made a choice. You pay for that choice.

DarkKnight3565 on July 27, 2013 at 10:53 AM

Have you actually looked at the law?

782.04(2)

The unlawful killing of a human being, when perpetrated by any act imminently dangerous to another and evincing a depraved mind regardless of human life, although without any premeditated design to effect the death of any particular individual, is murder in the second degree and constitutes a felony of the first degree, punishable by imprisonment for a term of years not exceeding life or as provided in s. 775.082, s. 775.083, or s. 775.084.

Florida’s jury instructions define what is a ‘dangerous mind’:

1. [A] ‘person of ordinary judgment’ would know the act, or series of acts, ‘is reasonably certain to kill or do serious bodily injury to another; AND,

2. The act is ‘done from ill will, hatred, spite, or an evil intent;’ AND

3. The act is ‘of such a nature that the act itself indicates an indifference to human life.’

Under Florida caselaw, these would be examples of what constitutes second-degree murder are cases where defendants commit acts like driving their cars into crowds of people or poisoning the salad bar.

Now, explain your case for your assertion that the result in Zimmerman trial was the product of HOW the law was ‘presented’ and explain why he should have been charged with second-degree murder in the first place.

No where do I see anything that contradicts this.

B29 said in the interview that she didn’t even believe that the prosecution should have brought Zimmerman to trial and that the trial was a ‘publicity stunt’ on the part of the prosecution.

My impression from the interview is that she went in with a verdict before the trial started that he was innocent, maybe because of race. Then she tried to fix the facts around that verdict and is frustrated that the law got in the way. It doesn’t sound like she went into the trial with an open mind determined to listen to the facts and she how things shook out.

Maddy, Juror B29, got it right. That is, while she thought that Zimmerman did something morally wrong (based on the evidence available to me, I don’t think she got that part right), she understood her duty was to apply the law to the evidence. In fact, she correctly recognized that the prosecutors had no business bringing the case to trial at all.

From

When asked by Roberts whether the case should have gone to trial, Maddy said, “I don’t think so.”

This is truly shameful conduct on the part of a news division once home to giants like John Cameron Swayze, Frank Reynolds, Harry Reasoner, David Brinkley, and Peter Jennings.

The guy who likened the 1994 Congressional elections to the temper tantrum of a 2-year-old and who blamed his lung cancer on picking up smoking after 9/11? I doubt he would have had too many problems with ABC’s dubious ethical standards here.

If liberals/progressives didn’t lie, they would have no followers. The lamestream media lies every time it benefits their agenda.

Hmmmmm, depending on the feedback of this edited interview it will be interesting to see how she continues to portray the verdict. Or will she be smart and just go back to her life? Bullied into the not guilty verdict could make her a household name.

Her interview could be cut and spliced humorously to make a viral video. The difference is, it would be an obvious joke video, where ABC wants us to think their editing job is serious journalism.

Another few million for the George Zimmerman early retirement fund, and another few million Americans dumbed down just a little more.

Paul-Cincy on July 27, 2013 at 12:58 PM

Better yet, splice together a bunch of Robin Roberts et al from ABC to have them saying things they never meant to say. Like a conversation among 3 or 4 of them that never happened. That would be a hoot.

Paul-Cincy on July 27, 2013 at 1:00 PM

She said it as a lead in to some theological mush. Of course there was no coherence in the thought processing she was attempting to pursue in that moment of the interview.

“If I had a favorite harlot station, ABC would be it…except for all the others, including Faux” — obama

I posted excerpts on AP’s thread, for balance. Her first assessment was “guilty, I’ll hang the jury”, as I also posted ahead of the verdict…if there was to be a hung jury, she’d have been the one.

Well, she and the others looked at the evidence/lack of presented in court, the law/s and decided.

She’s still a PR harlot, and one in general, for not shutting up and going away in decency.

All the creeps of the world, may your brains splatter, from dereliction alone.

Why second-degree murder?

Well, one reason is that Zimmerman targeted Martin for ‘looking suspicious’ even called him a “f***ing punk” for no apparent reason other than “he looks Black.” Despite the attempts to demonize Martin, there’s no evidence that Martin was doing anything illegal. That certainly qualifies as “ill will” to me.

Secondly, there were major problems with Zimmerman’s account of that night, which causes a credibility problem for him. For example, he claimed that Martin jumped out of a bush, banged his head against the cement until he felt his life was in danger, and reached for his gun. None of that rings true. There was no bush, the gun was holstered on Zimmerman’s back, and Martin’s body was found on grass – several feet away from the cement.

If you watch the interview, you see she has a minder, David Chico, who came up with that bogus charge against Zimmerman, eight years ago.

They are the active enablers of tyranny.

RT (Russia Today) and Pravda, sadly, have more credibility today than the rest of the world’s media combined.

DarkKnight3565 on July 27, 2013 at 1:05 PM

That’s retarded, Sir! Do you even realised how ignorant you are?

Transcript from NEN call:

Zimmerman: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.”

Dispatcher: “OK, and this guy — is he black, white or Hispanic?”

Zimmerman: “He looks black.”

Who brought up race?

As for calling people ‘f*cking punks,’ is that supposed to be some code for black people? If so, please let Johnny Rotten of The Sex Pistols and Mick Jones of The Clash know that they are black.

Despite the attempts to demonize Martin, there’s no evidence that Martin was doing anything illegal. That certainly qualifies as “ill will” to me.

Then, go and get your JD and get back to me because it is quite obvious you haven’t a clue when it comes to the law.

Except that the evidence did support his story.

Listen, I could utterly destroy you, but I’m in a charitable mood today.

The “journalist” in question fed her that line word for word,

And she accepted the premise, and agreed with it. She even repeated it herself:

For myself…he’s guilty, because the evidence shows he’s guilty.

George Zimmerman got away with murder…but you can’t get away from God.

Nobody framed her.

So basically, you feel as if he’s guilty of second degree murder and by God you’re going to make up phony evidence to prove it, lol.

Does she have a case for libel, slander, or defamation based on this distortion? She should get herself a first-rate lawyer, walk away with three or four million in a settlement, and join the Tea Party.

The two jurors who have come out to speak have both stepped in it. The one juror that seemed to have his head on strain was the alternate juror guy who made sense. Bet the rest of the jurors will clam up after seeing what happens when you go public,

Even allegedly “reasonable” blacks are blind to any notion that Trayvon Martin in any way contributed to his own death or even that George Zimmermaqn is now white. An actual conversation I had with a black:

Q Why do you keep referring to George Zimmerman as “white” when he’s actually Hispanic.”
A He’s half white.
Q By that definition President Obama is white because he’s half white.”
A Zimmerman is white because he’s not only acting for “the man” but he acted like “the man.”.
Q So in other words, if Zimmerman were half black or even all black and acted from a position of authority and, from your viewpoint, acted aggressively toward Martin, you would consider him a white?
A That’s right any black working for “the man” is, as far as I’m concerned a white.

This black gentleman (and he was a gentleman–no raised voice or anything and we parted on friendly terms–but with totally flawed logic) turned deaf ears to any argument, no matter how persuasive that Zimmerman could possibly be defending himself.)

This type of monolithic thinking is why, I feel, that even integrating police departments doesn’t bring racial harmony because any black cop arresting a black criminal is considered an “Uncle Tom” doing the white man’s “dirty work”.

As a general rule,it is helpful to include actual facts and not crap you heard from Al Sharpton or other racist instigators. Not one thing in your post is even remotely true.

You’re just pissed off because Zimmerman was found not guilty of killing a worthless street thug and petty criminal. Trayvon Martin’s death is partly due to his own actions. And that holds true without even delving into Martin’s criminal past or the fact that Watermelon drink and Skittles are 2/3 of a drug popular among the hip hop culture.

But the reality is the world is no worse off without one less individual like Trayvon Martin.
