Collapse: Weiner goes limp in new post-scandal poll

posted at 12:46 pm on July 25, 2013 by Allahpundit

Dare I say that his numbers have turned flaccid? Or would that be too hacky even for me? Trick question: Nothing’s too hacky for me, my friends.

Alternate headline via Popehat: “Clearly flawed or hacked poll implies New Yorkers have taste.”

Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner has suffered a massive erosion of support among New York City Democrats following revelations this week that his sexting with women continued long after his 2011 resignation from Congress, a new NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist Poll has found.

Weiner’s favorability rating among registered Democrats has tanked since June, from 52 percent to 30 percent, according to the poll conducted Wednesday. Over that same period, the percentage of Democrats who said they had an unfavorable impression of Weiner spiked from 36 to 55.

His lead over City Council Speaker Christine Quinn has also evaporated; 25 percent of Democrats said they’d now vote for her in the Sept. 10 Democratic primary, and 16 percent said they’d back Weiner. A poll conducted last month had Weiner leading Quinn 25 percent to 20 percent.

Last month 59 percent of city Dems said he deserved a second chance. That number’s down now to 45 percent. So much for the “if Huma says it’s okay, it’s okay” strategy.

There is some good news for Weiner fans, though. He’s pretty sure that he’s only had three online sexual relationships since resigning from Congress. He’s confident that it’s no more than that. But, as usual, he can’t say with certitude:

Mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner said Thursday that he may have engaged in online sexual relationships with up to three women since resigning from Congress in 2011.

“I don’t believe I had any more than three,” he said when asked at a press conference how many relationships since his resignation were sexual in nature…

Weiner told reporters Wednesday that he estimated there had been six to 10 women with whom he had virtually engaged in total. He declined to give specifics.

Embarrassing confession: I feel a bit of sympathy for him. I know that’s verboten because he’s a hard-left liberal and, by nearly universal acclaim at this point, a weaselly sleaze, but it’s painful to watch someone torch every last bit of dignity they have to chase their demons. He’s not quite Amanda Bynes, but that analogy seems less inapt by the day. Even his old friends from the New York congressional delegation think he needs “serious psychiatric help.” Why his wife lets him persist in this self-immolation at this point, I have no idea. Clearly, after this poll and the near-certainty of more sexting revelations to come, they’re not going to be the first couple of New York. Weiner calculated, I think, that running now was a good idea because, even if he ended up losing, all the embarrassing stuff left over from 2011 would come out during the campaign and be old news by the time of the next mayoral election in four years. As it turned out, the spectacle of this guy holding a “here’s why new pictures of my wang are on the Internet again” presser for the second time in three years just confirms the suspicion that he lacks the good sense to be trusted with any kind of power. Between that and the fact that, unlike Spitzer, he has no real record to run on either, he’s done as a public servant.

The companion piece to that that you should read today is Politico’s story on the real reason why Weiner was never going to win. He has no field operation; if he made it to the run-off, he’d be out-organized. In many ways, he’s a surprisingly amateur politician for a guy who’s been in office for so long. Except even an amateur would have realized that three post-scandal online affairs is three too many.

What exactly has he been doing for money since then? Is that why he was so eager to run for mayor? Cuz he needed a job?

Why his wife lets him persist in this self-immolation at this point, I have no idea.

The Muslim Brotherhood told her to. As Hillary’s assistant, she had access to a First Lady, a Senator, and a Secretary of State who may not have been too careful with confidential papers around her trusted aide. Imagine the tidbits she scooped up. Now think of what kind of homeland security info the NYC mayor gets.

Wethal on July 25, 2013 at 12:55 PM

Huma doesn’t need help.

She is not a victim.

She’s an enabler, for sexual/political reasons.

She’s formed, coached, and used by the Clintons. The Wiener marriage is just a front.

Hillary/Huma — 2016

Wiener can sext.

Bill can be Bill.

Hillary can do Huma.

Both can do the land.

Muslims, the fools, will all vote for them.

The Earth keeps on turning.

Feminazis are the eternal hypocritical sows.

If New Yorkers vote for him, they s/b called ScrewYorkers. It seems that even they get it, though.

Pimp Jackson’s daughter is supporting Huma “leave the family alone”.

Of course, dummy. They can be alone all they want.

Just leave New York’s office and dough alone. YOU don’t have the judgment to administer anything, outside of your ‘blessed’ home.

Au contraire, with the need for “serious psychiatric help” Senor Danger has eminently qualified himself to assume the position of Mayor of New York City.

It would actually be good (for us) if this weiner won. Not for NY of course. But despite any polls, I’ll bet a lot of NY voters were thinking: “we got gays in the military, the Mosque at Ground Zero, millions of ilegals now to take over the country, and etc, so why not go the extra mile of diversity and have an admitted perv as mayor!” Lol. Well, maybe Weiner has gone too far this time even for those NY voters.

It’s not exactly a crazy suggestion. The guy can’t find a job in the private sector(since they expect results as Ray Stantz told us). He may not be able to hack it as a lobbyist given how he resigned from the House in disgrace. Thanks to Spitzer’s failure at CNN, I doubt any cable network will give him a shot. So elected office is his only option for drawing a paycheck.

Bet he thought the Clintons and the Dem machine would come through for him.

According to WaPo, Huma has been fundraising by dropping Hillary’s name to Clinton donors. Donors don’t like it, but took it as a broad hint that if they wanted to be on Hillary’s good side in 2016, they’d better chip in for Weiner now.

UltimateBob on July 25, 2013 at 1:10 PM

My contrarian take:

Field operations are overrated for NYC. Weiner’s real challenge all along was going to be money — as in “who is going give him the TV ad dollars he’ll need?” The one virtue of the scandal is that it’s turned Weiner into a celebrity. If he were to read his grocery list in public there would be at least a half-dozen print reporters and a 2 TV stations to cover it. Weiner has high negatives, but in races like this — it doesn’t matter. He just has to beat the other guys. One of the reasons Weiner experienced a resurgence was because of his skill in talking about the issues and his willingness to attack Bloomberg from the Left. Expect Weiner to exploit his windfall of free media to position himself as a liberal champion of the working class. He’ll probably grab the live-wire of anger in NYC’s large minority communities about stop-and-frisk policies.

Captain, if this were any other woman, I’d believe you. But this person is the main gal-pal of Hillary, who’s husband was the philanderer-in-chief. If she leaves she will sign an aircraft landing light on Hillary and her decisions. Hillary then gets asked her opinion on Huma’s decision, someone starts taking notice of Bill’s recent activity, and before we know it pics of Bill just might show up.

Realize if we were talking about a normal woman in a normal situation your analysis would be spot-on. But Dem identity is wrapped around party unity to the point the individual doesn’t matter when it comes to politics.
