McDermott: The White House has been “terribly inefficient” with ObamaCare promotion

posted at 5:21 pm on July 24, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Democrats’ original 2014 campaign-season plan of owning ObamaCare with strong, positive messaging doesn’t seem to be panning out too well so far; as Mary Katharine pointed out last night, the creeping trend of moderate Democrats turning sour on the “Affordable” Care Act and all of the groan-inducing news about its complicated, sloppy, and economically damaging implementation means that certain Democrats in Congress are probably looking to back away slowly from directly embracing the law in their reelection campaigns.

Democratic Rep. Jim McDermott, although still very much a fan of the general idea of ObamaCare, had some words for the administration on the way they’re handling the rollout. A Tuesday evening Politico piece, recounting how the White House realized they had a potentially major problem on their hands with Democrats after Sen. Max Baucus’s now-infamous “trainwreck” remark, and quietly moved White House chief of staff Denis McDonough into the “job of Capitol Hill confidence builder.” McDonough has reportedly spent the last few months “soothing Democratic anxieties over the most divisive health care expansion in decades,” but perhaps not including as many Democrats as they might have — because in response to the piece, McDermott wondered… “Who?” Via the WFB:

“The White House has been terribly inefficient in dealing with the promotion of their bill. The 2010 election was a referendum on it, and they sat quietly and we lost the House, after we’d gone to bat for this bill, we then lost the House,” McDermott said. …

“I don’t know who he is. If he were sitting here in this room, I would not know him,” he said. “Maybe he’s been someplace, but I’m on the Ways and Means Committee, I’m the ranking member on the Health Subcommittee that’s implementing the bill, I’ve never seen him.”

You’ve lost Baghdad Jim. Hmmm.

22044 on July 24, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Yeah, but then again, it’s just so wonderful it’ll just sell itself.

BigWyo on July 24, 2013 at 5:27 PM

Maybe ‘team obama/Hillary’ planned it this way all along? Perhaps Hillary’s BIG SELL will be promising to repeal obamacare and replace it with something much, much better, like HillaryCare?

Pork-Chop on July 24, 2013 at 5:28 PM

If we could just get the messaging right, those stupid sheep will fall in line.

John the Libertarian on July 24, 2013 at 5:28 PM

The people in Washington state voting this guy in over and over again are morons.
Sorry- stupid is, as stupid votes.

FlaMurph on July 24, 2013 at 5:29 PM

That crazy old fart has probably met the guy a few dozen times …….McDaMoron is nuts.

If you spray shit with platinum tint it’s still shit.

McDermott: The White House has been “terribly inefficient” with ObamaCare promotion

Yeah, that’s all that’s wrong with Obamacare—poor promotion. By the way, I can keep my doctor if I want to, right? RIGHT???

dirtseller on July 24, 2013 at 5:39 PM

These dems are finding out what’s in it. McDermott not happy about his ownership of this mess.

DanMan on July 24, 2013 at 5:43 PM

But obviously the same “terribly inefficient” people failing at the easy task of promotion will be “amazingly effective” at the difficult task of actual administration.

Do they ever hear themselves?

CapnObvious on July 24, 2013 at 5:43 PM

Yeah, that’s been the problem. Promotion of it has sucked.

Keep telling yourself that, Dems.

Chris of Rights on July 24, 2013 at 5:44 PM

I live across the Puget Sound sound from Big Jim. I can assure y’all that he has no room to talk about inefficient. He’s been attempting to look normal for years and he’s terribly inefficient at it.

platypus on July 24, 2013 at 5:49 PM

Baghdad Jim is senile, not to mention a traitor.

Ward Cleaver on July 24, 2013 at 5:50 PM

Senators didn’t used to remind me of old men who forget to pull up their trousers after going to the bathroom.

vityas on July 24, 2013 at 5:50 PM

McDermott compared this battle to Gettysburg. Republicans won that one as I recollect, commencing with a startling victory on a little rocky hill…

Yeah, stick with that analogy Dems. You’re about to repeat a famous charge.

dogsoldier on July 24, 2013 at 6:21 PM

He’s 76. Maybe he forgot. Of course, it could also be possible McDonough is BS’ing the press. Either way, I really hope this is the biggest train wreck in the history of train wrecks.

MTF on July 24, 2013 at 6:35 PM

after we’d gone to bat for this bill, we then lost the House,”

Yeah, ya dumb ass. Didn’t believe the national polls. And you passed that POS legislation. So folks kicked Dummycrats out in 2010. Now double down again stupid and see what happens.

McDermott: The White House has been “terribly inefficient” with ObamaCare promotion.

There fixed it.

Herb on July 24, 2013 at 6:44 PM

When you write a crap bill, and give it to crap people to implement, why would you be surprised when what you have is a pile of crap.
Baghdad Jim is a specialist on piles of crap.
Hey, Jim, have you eavesdropped on any more of Speaker Boehner’s cell-phone conversations?

Another Drew on July 24, 2013 at 6:55 PM

McDermott is an idiot.

If you tie up a pile of cow crap in nice ribbons and bows, is it still a pile of cow crap?

McDermott forced this Obamanation on us all…McDermott and the rest of the Idiot Posse.

Wish they’d own up to it.

McDermott tried to sell us a pile of cow crap.

Which is why they had to pass it in order to see what was in it. Remember what your heartthrob Pelosi told us?

Had to pass it immediately. Could not wait to be passed, the world would end…or something.

Eat it.

coldwarrior on July 24, 2013 at 8:05 PM

And when the whole crashes, Baghdad Jim will be among the loudest pushing for single-payer. That has been on his wishlist for as long as he’s been around. He’s a doc, you know (military psychiatrist back in the day).

ugottabekiddingme on July 24, 2013 at 8:37 PM

…are he and the senile senator from Arizona getting treatment from the same doctor?

KOOLAID2 on July 24, 2013 at 9:29 PM

What’s to promote?

It’s. The. Law.

CurtZHP on July 24, 2013 at 10:08 PM

I really think Obama didnt want this to become law. If it had not passed thru the congress he would have had the ultimate piece of leverage against anyone opposed to it. Now that’s its law he has to go out and defend it..much harder for a community agitator to defend a bad law than to alienate those against it. Those opposing the could be demonized endlessly without much effort ….which is Obama’s past time.

jaywemm on July 24, 2013 at 11:51 PM

I’m the ranking member on the Health Subcommittee that’s implementing the bill, I’ve never seen him.

He does broad strokes speeches, details are for someone else to deal with. If you’d paid any attention at all you’d know that.

Obama doesn’t do real work, heavy lifting, details, or specifics… what’d you expect?

gekkobear on July 25, 2013 at 12:21 AM

Only one politician lost his seat last election (Brown of Mass) that’s why they can say anything they they want & know that there is no consequence.

RdLake on July 25, 2013 at 3:19 AM

Full repeal is the only answer.

Amazingoly on July 25, 2013 at 7:03 AM

Promoting Obamacare is kind of like the White Star Line promoting the Titanic by talking about the wonderful icebergs that would be seen on the voyage.
