Chuck Todd: Get ready for “déjà pivot”

posted at 12:01 pm on July 24, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

I’d add this to the earlier post on Detroit and Barack Obama’s new PR campaign on the economy, but this really deserves a perch of its own, even though it’s a couple of days old now.  Chuck Todd may have scored the Coinage Award of the Month with the phrase “deja pivot” to describe the — 8th? 9th? 11th? 19th? — pivot to jobs and the economy by the White House.  Looks like the media isn’t exactly impressed with the big windup to the same old pitch after all (via the Weekly Standard):

TODD: “This speech, this pivot – pivot to the economy, again it’s like déjà pivot I have when it comes to the economy. But it seems like they really are signaling they are going to have a campaign approach to this fight with congress when it comes to the debt ceiling, when it comes to sequestration 2.0. All of the decisions coming to a head in the fall, they’re basically saying, hey, we’re going to travel the country.”

THE WASHINGTON POST’S DAN BALZ: “Well, they learned that lesson in 2011 during the debt ceiling debacle, which was playing out at this point two years ago. When that collapsed and turned into such a mess, they pivoted away as we all know and went into campaign mode in the fall. And as you remember, he put the Jobs Act forward right after Labor Day in 2011 mostly as a campaign effort. And I think what we’re going to see is very similar. But I think that the real question is what does he really have to say at this point? Is he simply trying to do it for politics? Perhaps. But that begs the question of what do you do about a sticky unemployment rate, middle class families that are struggling. There’s a lot that he has to deal with.”

TODD: “You know what they’re acknowledging?  That they have nothing new to say. Because what are they saying? ‘Hey, look back at this speech!’ He’s said it all before, so he doesn’t have anything new to say.  He’s just going to say it differently.”

Dan Balz’ colleague Greg Sargent followed up this morning with a lament that news organizations aren’t taking Obama’s latest pivot seriously enough:

That resulted in an eruption of, well, laughter:

Of course, the news org in this case was MSNBC, which hardly rates as a “neutral news org.” The fact that even the most sympathetic cable outlet to the White House is mocking the idea of another “pivot” should be highly instructive.

What do you expect from a rat-eared fraud that gave the same SOTU speech two years in a row? His speech at Knox College is going to be virtually the same one he gave there in 2005.

the “pivot” is just the shot of dope the WH uses to whither the time to the next “crisis” that will go unwasted. It’ll give him a lil’ bounce for a time, then it’s back to the same ol’ same ol’. They might as well rephrase the “pivot” as “Nearer My God To Thee.”

What is really funny to me is the idea that Barry Benghazi is working at all. He doesn’t pivot to anything. Ron Burgundy will read whatever is on the teleprompter whenever they trot him out there.

The rest of the time he is smoking Kools and watching ESPN.

The plan was to reduce jobs and to increase government dependency from day one.

Cindy Munford on July 24, 2013 at 12:31 PM

obama is intentionally for the diminshing of the USA, bringing her to par with the rest of the global latrine.

He just pretends and pivots, to divert the masses.

They, the majority, are out shopping, eating, being entertained.

Schadenfreude on July 24, 2013 at 12:31 PM

Actually, he doesn’t even bother doing that. Just check the YouTube compilations of speeches given several years ago vs. just recently. Why ‘fix’ the teleprompter script when you don’t think it’s broken? In his conceit he thinks he just needs to say it again, maybe they’ll finally understand his brilliance.
And most of the pathetic press won’t even call him on it.

Here’s an angle…

When Obama speaks, it shows…it shows that he himself does not believe one damn word he is saying. Mannerisms, intonation…all of it.

So, why would any sane rational person believe any of it?

Bitter Clinger on July 24, 2013 at 12:43 PM

The only big item agenda that this incompetent fool was able to pass was Obamacare and that was only when the democrats had super majorities in Congress… And now Obamacare is falling apart… Other than that he was not able to pass anything… Even the fiscal cliff deal is a strategic defeat for him and the liberals even if they were able to increase taxes on those making over $ 400,000… The reason is that these morons were forced politically to keep the Bush tax rates for 99.5% of the tax payers and by doing so they have starved their welfare state for money, taxing the 0.5% of taxpayers is not going to pay in any shape or form for their welfare state… Let them try the suicidal act of increasing taxes on the remaining 99.5% of the people…

Key West Reader on July 24, 2013 at 12:55 PM

A “pivot” towards anything is worthless if you just stand with your pivot-foot glued to the floor and don’t go anywhere or do anything.

Ok, so he’s pivoted (again). Now what?

Fwiw:

As anyone knows who ever took Politics 1A much less 101, (which I presume is pretty much every HotGas fan) stuff like who gets to sit in the camera view behind the podium during Big Speeches is nearly always a specific thought-out decision, which imo makes it more than a little curious that the audience crowded around behind the President at his latest pivot to the economy speech is entirely white. no black folks or racial minorities anywhere to be seen.

there’s a morbidly obese housewife, a nervous-looking guy in a tie sitting next to a semi-milf, and a bearded hipster in shorts sitting in the front row, with concerned-looking retirees and seniors in the second row. Judging by their unsmiling far-away eyes and nervous body language, none of them appear too enthusiastic about being with Obama today.

But no people of color anywhere in the camera throw.
