McCain: States should take another look at Stand Your Ground laws

posted at 8:01 am on July 22, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

This starts off with Candy Crowley pressing John McCain to explain how the verdict of the George Zimmerman trial provided justice to Trayvon Martin’s family. Instead of explaining how courts of law work on reasonable doubt, McCain instead tells Crowley that no one has proved that the jury was corrupt, which is … a rather large non-sequitur, and a hint that McCain didn’t pay much attention to the trial in the first place.  An even bigger hint is when McCain brings up Stand Your Ground laws, which had nothing to do with the lethal-force decision in the shooting, but has become the favorite political escape hatch in Washington DC since the verdict.

Ah, well, any port in a storm:

John McCain urged all states with Stand Your Ground laws to review them in the aftermath of the George Zimmerman trial.

“I can also see that Stand Your Ground law may be something that needs to be reviewed by the Florida legislature or any other legislature that has passed such legislation,” McCain said on CNN’s State of the Union this morning.

He said that he was “confident” Arizona state legislators would look at the law again “because it is a very controversial legislation.”

All SYG laws do is remove the positive requirement to retreat before using lethal force where one reasonably fears the loss of life or grave bodily harm.  If the possibility of flight is removed at that point — as it was in the Zimmerman case, where the defendant argued (and the jury believed) he was pinned to the ground — then SYG is moot.  At that point, the basic laws of self-defense apply, not SYG, even though as Jazz argued yesterday in his post, SYG is really just a rational form of self-defense.

Basically, this is just an easy way for Capitol Hill denizens to pander a bit while retreating themselves.  There isn’t a single state that will review SYG laws on the basis of the blather, including McCain’s Arizona, and don’t expect McCain to even float the suggestion of repealing it when he’s back in his home state.  Right now, it’s the politically-correct response to any Zimmerman-Martin questions, but in a month no one will be talking about SYG at all.

Florida did. No changes.

The fact of the matter is that I’m beginning to hate anybody who is out there suggesting that George Zimmerman somehow beat the justice system. Despite the heavy-handed bias of state officials, Zimmerman was tried and aquitted of manslaughter charges. To suggest that justice was somehow circumvented since Trayvon Martin’s despicable parents didn’t get their pound of flesh is just wrong.

George Zimmerman faced a fair and impartial jury who saw enough doubt to find him not guilty of 2nd degree murder and mansluaghter. Any of you filthy racists douchebags who claim that we should just go ahead and punish Zimmerman anyway are the gross ones.

Fact of the matter is that Trayvon Martin was no choirboy. He assaulted Zimmerman and got what he had coming to him for not walking away when challenged. Nobody would argue that this was the ideal outcome for anybody but the continued persecution of Zimmerman because filth like you doesn’t like the verdict flys in the face of our entire judicial process. And, BTW, polarizes the issue of race in such a way any meaningful dialogue is lost in the noise of stupid bleating sheep talking about justice for a tatted up racist homophobic street thug.

First, you have to understand how courts of law work before you can explain reasonable doubt. Why on earth would he go to the jury isn’t corrupt? Although, one D rep from MD did call them sympathetic. Maybe he didn’t pay much attention to the trial cuz it would have cut into his nap time.

It was an attempted gay-bashing that turned into successful self-defense. The wannabe gay basher ended up dead due to his own violent tendencies. Another way to look at the SYG repeal sect is that they are encouraging demanding the crime wave continue. Trayvon Martin’s crime wave is over thanks to George Zimmerman. No more burglaries, dope smoking, illegal firearms possession, assault and battery, or child pornography. That’s just from the treasured moments he saved on his phone. His friend attributes the beat down on George to gay bashing.

Rush Limbaugh:

I thought, when I heard this last night, that that’s all anybody’d be talking about today, because this throws this thing 180 degrees out of phase. So now Trayvon Martin, who is the recipient of full-fledged, 100% victim status? It turns out could well be a gay basher, and the left has been defending him. So what do they do? They have two interest groups here that they represent and champion: African-Americans and homosexuals, and in this incident, the object of their affection (in this case, Trayvon Martin), might have thought he was being pursued by a gay guy and beat him up, or tried to.

I figured they’d be very conflicted today.

But that hasn’t come up anywhere.

Now I think I understand why. It’s precisely because nobody wants to get near it. Nobody wants to get anywhere near this. Those words of Rachel’s are gone, into the ether, never to be remembered until the EIB Network kicked off at noon.

I liked Allen West’s comment:

I am a black male who grew up in the inner city of Atlanta and no one ever followed me in a mall. I don’t recall any doors clicking when I crossed the street. And I never had anyone clutching their handbag when I got in an elevator. I guess having two awesome parents who taught me to be a respectful young man paid dividends.”

Trayvon Martin didn’t have the same advantage no matter how much the racists want to paint his parents as victims of white oppression.

Saturday, in 100 cities across our nation, Black Americans and their Liberal sympathizers, protested for “Justice for Trayvon”, seeking “justice for a Not Guilty verdict in the trial of George Zimmerman, a “White Hispanic” neighborhood watch member, who was jumped by a 17-year-old troubled Black kid.

Trayvon Martin, being egged on by his worthless girlfriend, broke Zimmerman’s nose with one punch, then sat on him, beating his face in, while slamming the back of it into the sidewalk. When he would not get off of Zimmerman, as he pleaded for him to, Zimmerman shot him though his heart.

It was later revealed that this high school football player was an aspiring petty criminal, who had been suspected of burglaries in the area, and suspended from school several times for carrying around a burglary tool, and pot in his backpack, and had pot in his system at the time of his death.

O/T – mccain also expressed support for enzi, even saying he’d go campaign for him if needed.

Liz Cheney has to be thinking to herself, “I pray he does it as early in the primary as possible. That’ll boost my chances.”

He has done such disservice to his country since arriving in the Senate, I can no longer thank him for his military service, and as such is the only veteran who, for me, fits in that category.

The Right of self-defense is absolute.

There is no way in hell I am going to call 911, and then wait for minutes, hours, or later on that day for law enforcement to arrive.

Somebody challenges me with bodily harm, or worse, one of my kids or grandkids…they have just forfeit their own life.

Bad choice. Their choice.

No if’s, and’s, or but’s.

On a parenthetical note…how many actually paid any attention to the Zimmerman trial?

If McCain were less busy trying to accommodate La Raza and Reconquista….ya think maybe he’d have time to…oh, never mind…McCain is a Democrat.

So I found someone even less informed about the legal aspects of the case than me…..being interviewed on national TV about the very court case. Good Lord.

Dongemaharu on July 22, 2013 at 8:06 AM

He knows even less about the economy. I recall vividly, that embarrassing moment when he stopped (and lost) his campaign to rush back to Washington to save the economy, and then sat there like an imbecile with his mouth open, when they asked him what we should do to save it.

He does know bluster and betrayal well though.

Don L on July 22, 2013 at 8:51 AM

Someone needs to stand on McCain’s ground; that is, someone else needs to be standing in his senatorial shoes. He’s a disgrace.

Can you flesh out, if you know, Martin’s family situation more? Your point that St. Trayvon hadn’t been cared for by birth mom since age 3 is very interesting, given her tearful presence at so many gatherings. From what I’ve read, Dad divorced birth mother, remarried and divorced second wife, and, I assume, was living with another woman who leased the Sanford apartment near where St. Trayvon was killed.

It seems to me that St. Trayvon was splitting time between homes in Miami and Sanford (near Orlando). Those aren’t neighboring communities. In none of the publicity is any mention of the kid’s home life and how it affected him. Comments?

This classic SNL skit from 1979 is largely OT, but when I think of Martin’s birth mom, I can’t help thinking of Garret Morris’s line at the end of it. BTW, you’ll recognize a senator from Minnesota.

Why did the following case get almost no national attention:

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1220695/Is-political-correctness-blame-lack-coverage-horrific-black-white-killings-Americas-Deep-South-Tennessee-Channon-Christian-Christopher-Newsom-carjack.html

Because the deceased are white?

Obama and many in the new media are anti-white racists. I’m sorry if people don’t like hearing it, but it’s true.

I believe race and skin color should be inconsequential. What a shame we have the most skin color-obsessed president ever.

OT….in other news….list of cities and municipalities vulnerable to bankruptcy…with a handy map at the link.

“Municipal Bankruptcies Map
The map below shows all municipalities filing for Chapter 9 bankruptcy protection since 2010, along with local governments voting to approve a bankruptcy filing.

Cities, towns and counties are shown in red. Utility authorities and other municipalities are displayed in gray. Click a marker to view details of each filing. Multiple municipalities have filed for bankruptcy in some cities, such as Omaha, Neb., so not all markers are visible without zooming in on the map…”

The street thug’s parents are despicable. That picture of a 12-year-old Trayvon that they released to make it seem that their son wasn’t a monster is about as despicable as you can get.

Happy Nomad on July 22, 2013 at 8:24 AM

I think trademarking his name and image tops that.

Dr. Frank Enstine on July 22, 2013 at 8:57 AM

Still, not a word from King Barry about the families in Chicago not being permitted to stand their ground.

The Black on Black killings continue, unabated.

And many right in the same neighborhood, the same community, Obama himself organized…you’d think he’d have some feeling about his old neighborhood being more dangerous than Kabul or Kandahar.

Pathological…uncaring…the only explanation, the man is sick, sick, sick. And so are all those who are trying to beatify Trayvon Martin.

He was beating down someone he and his “girlfriend” believed was a homo…OK. Trayvon wanted to bash a queer. Kill him. Murder a gay because Rachel Jeantel say he be a child rapist, a creepy ass-cracker…is that explicit enough to wake folks up?

And even the gay community is silent.

Why?

Trayvon died in the commission of a hate crime…a federal offense…a fundamental violation of Civil Rights law…

And the Civil Rights peddlers?

Busy trying to spread around the Big Lie because they cannot do otherwise.

All SYG laws do is remove the positive requirement to retreat before using lethal force where one reasonably fears the loss of life or grave bodily harm.

Is that actually written into a state law somewhere, this “requirement”?

Bishop on July 22, 2013 at 9:01 AM

Has there ever been such focused inattention as Florida v Zimmerman has produced? Nothing of importance is noticed, and everything lacking it is. The crucial fact to come out of the whole adventure—crucial, and therefore utterly overlooked–was that Rachel Jeantel, a prosecution witness and black girl aged nineteen years, CAN’T READ. The grim implication of this fact is confirmed by the illiteracy of tweets from blacks regarding the case. “Ima kill dat dumass cracker be racis.” Here we see as neatly displayed as if in a jewelry box why so many young blacks will go nowhere in the remaining fifty years of their lives. They can’t read, or barely can. In a fading techno-industrial civilization—I use the latter word frivolously—this consigns them to a life on charity. Is this not of more note than who started what?

But you keep do’n ya job John…… keep up da creppy ass cracker chit

Why does McCain automatically think that liberals have a valid point in their arguments? He never pushes back or questions their assumptions, he just folds like a cheap suit.

Cindy Munford on July 22, 2013 at 9:05 AM

John McCain gave us the “bipartisan campaign finance reform” act which is more of an incumbent re-election guarantee act. And now he is regurgitating a collectivist ploy? How many blows does liberty have to suffer from this man before we recognize him for what he is?

It’s also the idea that is reinforced by their role models that being uneducated but “street smart” is a badge of honor.
