Rolling Stone’s strange, dreamy cover of terrorist; Update: CVS refuses to sell

posted at 12:01 pm on July 17, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

It’s interesting, and infuriating.  We’ve already seen the rise of what Twitchy calls the “Jaharem” of admirers of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect, in custody since murdering a police officer and engaging in a firefight with law enforcement, then hiding and bleeding in a boat the rest of the day until he was discovered.  Now Rolling Stone offers a profile of Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the surviving brother of the duo who killed three and injured hundreds of others at the event, including an eight-year-old boy shredded by their bomb.

Why not give Tsarnaev the soft focus treatment for that, huh?

tsarnaev-rollingstone

RS at least notes that Tsarnaev became “a monster,” so why pose him as a sultry dreamboat for the cover?  They didn’t need to make him look maniacal or diabolical to get the point across.  One of the surveillance photos would have been sufficient to get the point across, or one of the pictures of Tsarnaev with his friends if they wanted to press the innocence-lost angle.  Instead, they give Tsarnaev the celebrity treatment, complete with soft focus, sepia wash, and bedroom eyes.  That’s why the credit on the cover says “Illustration by Sean McCabe.”

A more minor nitpick comes from the teaser for its cover story.  Rolling Stone insists on using the name “Jahar Tsarnaev.”  That may be how the first name is pronounced, but his name is spelled “Dzhokhar.” It certainly sounds chummy and intimate to use the nickname version his friends used, but that’s hardly appropriate for a news story about a “monster.”  Why not use his actual name? Did Rolling Stone assume its readers couldn’t figure out how to say it?

As Allahpundit notes in the Green Room, the Jaharem isn’t pleased with the magazine despite the soft-focus treatment Tsarnaev gets on the cover.  I guess these guys got it all wrong 40 years ago about how to make the cover of the magazine … or maybe they got it right:

Update: Interesting reaction from one major retailer:

CVS announced on its Facebook page Wednesday that the company will not sell the current issue of Rolling Stone with suspected Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnev on the cover.

“CVS/pharmacy has decided not to sell the current issue of Rolling Stone featuring a cover photo of the Boston Marathon bombing suspect,” the Facebook post read. “As a company with deep roots in New England and a strong presence in Boston, we believe this is the right decision out of respect for the victims of the attack and their loved ones.”

It’s their floor space, so it’s their decision whether to sell this product or not.  Any other retailers balking at this edition?

As I noted over on AP’s post:

In a just world, a contingent of Boston citizens would buy 1,000 copies of this magazine, pack the magazines & themselves into an extended cargo van and embark on a road trip to NYC.

Meanwhile, in a true show of solidarity, a group of NYC citizens would have found, detained and strapped to proctological exam tables, Wehner father & son.

A friendly competition would then ensue over which city’s contingent would be the first to successfully insert 500 copies of said magazine where the sun don’t shine into said father & son.

Unfortunately, we do not live in a just … or even sane, world.

Right. It’s almost a rhetorical question. They did it to illicit this response and sell magazines. They’re whores but most of the media are whores.

Getting worked up about it defeats the purpose. The ONLY way to ultimately level the playing field against progressives is to buy out their media organizations and/or create our own that are more attractive to consumers than theirs. Period.

Rolling Stone insists on using the name “Jahar Tsarnaev.” That may be how the first name is pronounced, but his name is spelled “Dzhokhar.”

Those who lost legs at the Boston Marathon were not amused by the Jokar, with intentional reference to the villain of the second Batman movie. Jokar Tsarnaev wounded more people than the one in the movie–in real life.

History is full of stories of “misunderstood” people who turn into monsters to “avenge” some perceived slight against them, from Hitler on down. But before Rolling Stone tries to drum up sympathy for the Jokar, let’s consider the facts–he blew the legs off dozens of people, murdered a police officer, and ran over his own brother in a stolen car. He deserves to rot in jail for the rest of his wicked life, unless put out of his misery by lethal injection.

Recall, in a 6 to 3 decision this summer, the Supreme Court upheld a federal law that makes it a crime for Americans to provide “material support” of any kind – be it in the form of cash, weaponry, training, personnel, services, or “expert advice or assistance” – to a foreign terrorist organization, even if that support is for ostensibly peaceful purposes.

The cover photo is just the icing on the cake. The meat of the problem is they make him out to be a victim. That he was “failed” by his family. That his family made him do all this against his will.

And that he “fell” into radical Islam. Not that he actively sought it out, but that he was walking along one day and just tripped and fell right into a great big puddle of radical Islam and didn’t know how to get out.

He’s not a victim and them portraying him as one is the disgusting aspect of this issue.

If you see these on a newsstand, bury them in the top shelf sideways behind something else that’s a slow mover.

Wenner is all about the Ghey…cause he’s a liberated liberal or something…

Given the fact that Rolling Stone has given the “rock star” treatment to an Islamist terrorist, Wenner obviously does not have a clue about how radical Islamists treat gays. It inolves scimitars and chopping blocks, and it ain’t pretty.
