Boehner: It’s time to do something for the children of illegal immigrants

posted at 4:41 pm on July 17, 2013 by Allahpundit

The strongest sign yet that what emerges from the House will in fact include a path to citizenship — not for everyone, maybe, but certainly for DREAMers.

After dodging the issue for months, House Speaker John Boehner on Wednesday took a position on citizenship for undocumented immigrants, saying Congress must deal with the children of those who are in the United States illegally.

“This is about basic fairness. These children were brought here on no accord of their own. And frankly, they are in a very difficult position. And I think many of our members believe that this issue needs to be addressed,” Boehner said at the weekly press conference with House GOP leaders…

On Wednesday Cantor emphasized that this was one area where both political parties should work together to provide some certainty for children.

“The history of our country is one that has moved away from holding kids liable for the deeds, misdeeds, commitment of crimes by parents. These are, in many instances, kids without a country if we don’t allow them to become full citizens of our country,” Cantor told reporters Wednesday.

It’s not just Boehner and Cantor. Darrell Issa and House Judiciary Committee Chair Bob Goodlatte have also sounded warm to the idea of a limited DREAM-type amnesty for children recently. Like I said last week, if it’s a choice between a full path to citizenship for DREAMers versus legalization for all illegals without any new special path to citizenship, I’ll take door number one. Read Mickey Kaus to see why door number two, i.e. legalizing illegals right away without any preset procedure for green cards, would be an utter messaging and policy disaster for the GOP. You’ll get no goodwill from Latinos for it; Democrats screeching about “second-class status” will see to that. And you’ll get no real leverage on border security from it if the initial legalization happens before the border is secured, which Democrats will absolutely insist on in one form or another. Case in point: The new “Gang of Seven” bill in the House wants “legalization first” for illegals, but proposes letting that legal status be rescinded if the feds can’t get E-Verify up and running in five years. Show of hands: Who thinks Democrats would happily acquiesce in letting illegals be re-illegalized five years from now because security measures are lagging? It’s a scam and a nonstarter.

If the House somehow convinced the Senate and Obama to accept a “legalization without citizenship” plan now, the Dems will simply browbeat the GOP into creating a citizenship path for illegals sometime in the next year or two, which means the House bill in due time will end up looking a lot like the Senate bill — a full amnesty in due course with no real guarantees of stronger border enforcement. If the name of the game here is building goodwill with Latinos, better to give sympathetic DREAMers a path to citizenship and leave the fate of everyone else to be determined later, when Republicans control Congress and can use that leverage to force real border guarantees in exchange for wider legalization. If Chuck Schumer thinks that’s not good enough, that’s fine. Let him and the Democrats in the Senate kill the House’s DREAM proposal.

For a sneak preview of the Democratic “second-class status” attack on Republicans, skip to 4:25 here and watch The One make the case to Telemundo Denver. If the House passes legalization without citizenship instead of DREAM, Schumer won’t be nearly this soft-spoken in pushing this talking point in 2014 and 2015.

And, if that’s not enough, Jim Sensenbrenner is claiming that the Supreme Court ‘commanded’ Congress to pass a new Voting Rights Act and that they need to do it before the 2014 elections.

Boehner: It’s time to do something for the children of illegal immigrants.

No, it is not.

How about we take care of the children of US citizens first.

Then we maybe can address the needs of legal resident aliens…if there is sufficient money to go around, if we the People are flush with cash to make individual and personal donations…but not a cent of government funding.

And the illegals? Give our money to them?

How stupid is that?

It is the responsibility of the parents…the illegal immigrant parents to take care of their own kids.

The stupid runs deep in this GOP.

The Immigration system in this country is broken.

But let’s focus on how / where it is broken….

Our government, by choice, doesn’t enforce the current laws on the books regarding immigration.

We can’t monitor / secure our borders.

We can’t monitor and ensure those who enter on temporary or student visas honor the terms of their visas.

We have yet to address the ramifications of anchor babies and their undocumented family members.

We have yet to address the economic ramifications of illegal / undocumented workers – to business, to the state, and to the poor.

And Mr. Speaker, if you want to talk about ‘basic fairness’ – what about the ‘basic fairness’ towards the millions who did honor and follow the immigration laws of the United States?

Athos on July 17, 2013 at 4:53 PM

Do something in 2017. You are dealing with an opposition party that does not deal with you in good faith. Priority number one should be to politically humiliate and defeat that party because they are a danger to the Republic.

Here’s what we could do… send them back to their countries of origin with their parents. It’s not MY fault that they’re in a bad position. It’s their parents’ faults.

Also, we need to pass an amendment that ENDS birthright citizenship. Anybody born here without at least one citizen parent shouldn’t be allowed automatic citizenship. That’s a hold-over from long ago, meant to address the needs of the children of slaves. It needs to be gone.

Murf76 on July 17, 2013 at 5:09 PM

The corruption and progressive values are entrenched, the only way to save the nation is to start over. The GOP has made almost no progress moving the country away from socialism, statism, or big government…they barely slow it down when in power.

Why do we buy the idea that the GOP is our only choice? The party is a failure…it has been for 85 to 90 of the last 100 years…if not for Reagan, Coolidge, and maybe Eisenhower, it would have been 100 years of completely progressive government.

Question for Ohio Voters:

Who is running against John Boehner in the Republican Primary in 2014?

If John Boehner truly believes that doing “something for the children of ILLEGAL” aliens is a higher priority than:

- Reforming the U.S. Corporate Tax system so we don’t continue to chase businesses and investment capital out of the USA by having the highest corporate tax rate in the world.

- Cutting the $17 Trillion National Debt so we don’t pass that burden on to our children and grandchildren

- Repealing Obamacare before it destroys our health care system and massively increases unemployment

- Enforcing our current laws against ILLEGAL immigration

then John Boehner is not doing his job or representing the needs of American Citizens and he needs to be VOTED OUT OF OFFICE!

The history of our country is one that has moved away from holding kids liable for the deeds, misdeeds, commitment of crimes by parents.

That’s partially true. However, when parents commit crimes we tend to throw them in the clink and the kids in state/foster care. Yeah, kids suffer when parents do stupid stuff.

Expect the amnesty shills like Schumer et al to demagogue the issue by saying we’re breaking up families and giving the parents “second-class status”.

Can’t wait for the sob media stories about trearing DREAMer Johnny from his deportation-ordered illegal undocumented immigrant parents.

Keep in mind this will be at the expense of children who are natural born citizens, and are wholly ignored in the debate about the effect of amnesty.

I guess our children have to split “their fair share” of the American dream with illegal aliens so politicians can remain popular.

Wisdom is apparently no longer a requirement of legislation or or legislators.

Their parents are and must be held accountable for their misdeeds against Nations and violating international law willingly and wantonly to abuse the Nation they are going to. This does not deserve any sort of reward or special treatment.

And that is the position these elected ass-hats hold: one of accountability.

They wish to avoid that and destroy the Nation by their lack of accountability. That has been the aim and goal of the elites for over a century. Yet they cannot conceive of what happens when a Nation’s laws are held in no regard at all. And that violates the civil rights of all CITIZENS because we are then thrown back to natural law, and no fool wants that, save the elites and their bleeding heart backers. They detest the rule of law, but forget that the rule of man is the strong over the weak, the law that is red of tooth and claw.

If you want to consider “fairness”, it would be fair to allow any citizen or legal resident who makes under $200,000.00 a year (the middle and working class) to not pay federal income taxes for the next 10 years. That’s fair, Boehner, you dumbass. Make that part of the immigration bill that the House is writing.

If you don’t do that, your flummery about “fairness” is just so much bullsh*t.

I would change the dollar figure so that CongressCritters remain taxpayers.

For that matter, what about the legal immigrant parent who came here and had to leave kids in their home countries while waiting the years-long sponsorship requirements to allow the children green cards. Guess they should’ve snuck in after all, huh?

Boehner: It’s time to do something for about the children of illegal immigrants

Yes, reform birthright citizenship and limit it to the children of citizens. You will have removed one of the primary magnets of illegal immigration.
