Gallup: Hispanics of all ages tilt Democratic

posted at 9:21 pm on July 15, 2013 by Allahpundit

Which is precisely why (a) we need to hurry up and pass immigration reform, say Republican reform fans, and (b) it’s pointless to think passing immigration reform will help us politically, say Republican reform critics.

By “tilt,” Gallup means a reliable ~52/21 Democratic/GOP spread among Latino voters of all ages, which I’d call a heavy, heavy lean. I’ll defy my eeyorish nature for once, though, and showcase the good-ish news from the poll for righties:

ga1

OIder Latino voters are a lost cause but younger Latinos might be in play. Offering a limited amnesty, like DREAM, in exchange for border security is something the House should look at. On the other hand, Gallup claims that Obama’s approval rating among Latinos aged 18 to 29 is … 72/17, the highest among any of the four age demographics. How “independent” are young Latino independents if they think The One’s doing a dynamite job to the tune of net +55 approval?

Another question. Which side is more likely to get credit if immigration reform of some sort passes? No way to tell for sure, but here’s what Gallup found in a separate poll when they asked voters which party is closer to their views on the subject:

g2

Only among older whites does a plurality endorse the Republican position (or what they imagine the Republican position to be), and it’s not even a wide plurality. That’s significant because you’re virtually guaranteed to see more Democratic votes for whatever emerges in Congress than you are Republican ones; at the very least, the eventual compromise bill will be deeply bipartisan, which gives voters who identify with the Democratic position on reform no real incentive to break with them. Maybe you’ll move a few people into the “neither” category. The flaw in the GOP’s master plan to rebuild goodwill with Latinos is that, to really make an impression in the teeth of numbers like this, they’d have to be even more ostentatiously gung ho for amnesty than Democrats are, which would be difficult even if they didn’t have a conservative base holding them to the right on border security. As it is, even if the House passes something, it’ll be via a divided Republican caucus and will certainly be more modest in legalization than the Senate bill. If you’re going to pander outright for votes, you need to go all out, especially if you’re facing a heavy partisan disadvantage. They’re not going to do that — it’s too risky to House incumbents from red districts — in which case how deeply will the big immigration outreach effort really penetrate these demographics, especially if/when it all ends with Obama holding a televised signing ceremony with himself as the star?

The other possibility here is that the numbers on immigration are to some extent byproducts of how different groups feel about Democratic and Republican policies generally. Build some goodwill with them in other ways and that’ll make them identify more with your immigration position, at least to the point of not treating it as a dealbreaker. Michael Warren has a nice piece about that at the Standard vis-a-vis Republicans in the southwest succeeding in heavily Latino districts. The first rule of politics is showing up. Obama understands that. How many national Republicans do?

Uh … no. Never. Treason is treason.

I am so sick and tired of people trying to slide this idiotic “border security” provision through in exchange for our sovereignty and the Rule of Law, as if border security means anything. It doesn’t. There is nothing but interior enforcement. Period. A sealed border is meaningless without interior enforcement.

Enough of this junk, already. Foreign nationals are foreign nationals. They are not Americans and, unless they have been invited, they have no reason to be here. End of story.

Offering a limited amnesty, like DREAM, in exchange for border security is something the House should look at.

Border security is a constitutional IMPERATIVE. The idea that you keep pushing that we should have to concede something to get it is RIDICULOUS.

Try this at work:

“Oh hey boss, no, I haven’t done any of the work you pay me for and that I’m contractually obligated to complete. If I did that, I wouldn’t have any leverage to get a promotion from you to be your boss forever. Oh, don’t be the “party of no,” or I’ll call you a racist. Look, offering a limited promotion, like just the title without the salary, in exchange for the work I was supposed to do anyway is something we should look at. Of course as soon as I’m the boss, I’ll have the power to just award myself the salary and other perks anyway, and excuse myself from ever doing the work I promised. What’s not to like?”

Only an IDIOT would give an INCH on shamnesty!

Just goes to show that if you want an intelligent, informed voting public, you should actually enforce the law. How many of these kool-aid chuggers would even be here if we did what we were supposed to do all along re: immigration and the border? I contest that the intelligent Hispanics that remained after proper enforcement over the years would never “lean” so heavily toward the party that is fundamentally opposed to many of their values. As it is, they’re easily brainwashed just like other groups focused on identity politics and said values are actually being corrupted. This garbage cannot stand any longer, no matter the political ramifications to the GOP. The Constitution must be enforced, even if it means that the two wolves and a sheep deciding on what to have for dinner results in the sheep calling all the shots and being called a “tyrant” by the wolves. We are a land of law, not men. It’s time we acted like it no matter what it takes.

CanofSand on July 15, 2013 at 9:53 PM

Senator Marco Rubio raking in the money
***************************************

Below is from FNC’s Jake Gibson:

—-

From a source familiar with the FEC reports:

“New finance reports will show Marco Rubio raised $3m in the 2nd quarter of 2013.

The 2nd quarter total is 31% more than what he raised in Q1 and brings his total for the first half of 2013 to $5.28 million.

The total is a strong showing for Rubio’s joint fundraising committee, the Rubio Victory Committee, which raises money for Rubio’s Reclaim America PAC and his re-election committee.

Notably, the majority of the donations to the Rubio Victory Committee in the last quarter were small-dollar donations (less than $200) from grassroots contributors.

The new reports will show that the Senator has total of nearly $3m cash-on-hand in his political committees, including $980,000 in the Reclaim America PAC and $1.97m in his Senate re-election committee.”

Gallup: Hispanics of all ages tilt Democratic

And exactly why we need immigration “reform”, as in making it a jail time felony for any government official to fail or refuse to enforce the immigration and border fence/security laws already on the books.

That said, it’s not about politics, it’s about self-protection and national security.

They could vote however they want, if here as a citizen, having obtained that status legally.

I would like to point out that even though this quote may be true of the party as a whole, individual Republicans could begin to garner goodwill among Hispanics. Remember, public opinion polls show Congress with terribly low approval ratings, yet the public largely sent back the same group. With this, you could begin to see pickups in some seats due to individual Republicans supporting the bill, even if you don’t see the support for Republicans in general increasing.

ChasingVictory27 on July 15, 2013 at 10:36 PM

Offering a limited amnesty, like DREAM, in exchange for border security is something the House should look at.

Forget it. The REB will simply ignore any aspect of a bill that has to do with border security, and he will get away with it. There’s no ‘exchange’. We are further ahead to maintain the status quo, which is not great but a h of a lot better than any alternative we can hope for.

My cousins live in South Texas down around the Brownsville area, namely San Benito & Harlingen, and have never voted. They range in age from late 30′s to late 40′s. I am not certain which way they would go. They think the government can have positive influences in certain areas but absolutely detest Mexicans who abuse the social welfare programs. Notice I said Mexicans.

Up here in West Texas, I know plenty of hispanics who will take advantage of Lone Star Card/WTO/TANF programs without a second thought simply because the government is willing to hand the cash out. Meanwhile, they work out in the oilfield making more than enough money to disqualify them from gov. assistance. They have defrauding down to an art form.

This leads me to believe that continuing to shuffle money from one group of citizens to another is doing exactly as intended. So why don’t we go ahead and pass an immigration bill that will make it easier for tens of millions of illegals to jump on the welfare rolls because that will obviously garner favor with hispanics!!!

Support Rubio for Preazy of the United Steazy!!!!!!

JAGonzo on July 15, 2013 at 10:52 PM

12% Republican? LOS (laugh out sadly). And this isn’t going to change, it’s only going to get worse as the new way of thinking is moving more and more toward redistributive economics, where the newly dominant lower classes can live well for a (long) time by “plundering” the $ from others.

To think amnesty will help us is utter incredible unadulterated insanity.

We’re not about voter obstruction, but we’re not about the opposite: intentionally giving a fatal windfall to the political opposition by empowering hordes of illegals to all of a suden vote Democrat. Turning solid red states like Texas blue, and reasonably red states like CO solidly blue. South Carolina and all of the south won’t be too far behind.

OK, maybe someday it will change, and Hispanics will come our way, but that will be a totally different world. Amnesty is not going to make that happen for us, I’m afraid. If anything, the MSM will make us the laughing stock of amnesty, with the likes of Jon Stewart mocking the majorities of Republicans that voted against amnesty despite it (hypothetically) passing and getting O’s signature.

If Hispanics were ever to come our way it indeed would be a totally different world, with totally different issues, and we and Hispanics will be starkly different than what we are now. That might be 40 years hence. In the meantime, don’t throw it all away in an act of desperate cowardly defeatism. Hold fast. Lobby for that “missing white vote” to come back (and amnesty is not going to help with that). Try to prevent the socialist takeover, and first and foremost that means no amnesty.

anotherJoe on July 15, 2013 at 11:02 PM

but here’s what Gallup found in a separate poll when they asked voters which party is closer to their views on the subject:

Wow. This poll tells me that blacks are the most brainwashed and deluded racial group of voters outside of Venezuela. Blacks of all ages find the Democrat party to represent their views on immigration to a greater degree than … Hispanics?! How did blacks position themselves to the left of the illegal immigrant race on immigration, despite suffering the highest unemployment rate in the country?

Who knows? I guess the same way the most Christian racial group positioned themselves to the left of atheists — blind partisanship. “Democrat” is the answer to every political question.

jangle12 on July 16, 2013 at 8:27 AM

It really depends on which “Hispanics” you are talking about. Rural people are different than city people. The ones who live in the ghettos of LA are more likely to support Democrats because they rely on “programs”. Also, Democrats in these “community organizations” operate more like gangs. You have corrupt local politicians, things like city aldermen, who “get things done” in exchange for political support. If you don’t support them when they send someone around for your mail-in ballot or to take you to the polling place, you start finding out that maybe you didn’t make the best decision. Often these corrupt local politicians are friends of the people who own your “affordable housing” unit. Maybe you start experiencing acts of vandalism. Being outspoken in your lack of support for Democrats in a city environment might not be good for your family’s welfare.

The thing about “community organizers” is that they tend to build “community organizations” which can be a euphemism for “corrupt political machine”. What Obama wants to do through “community organizations” is to duplicate the Chicago machine model in cities around the country. One way you force people into political support of your party is by providing a disincentive to support the other party. Do you know how dangerous a broken window can be in Chicago in the winter?
