The Mayor of San Diego would really, really like to apologize…

posted at 11:31 am on July 13, 2013 by Jazz Shaw

I first caught wind of this story by way of Jim Geraghty and the Morning Jolt, and on the surface it doesn’t look all that unusual. But it gets better. The Democrat Mayor of San Diego, (and former member of Congress) Bob Filner found himself in some seriously hot water this week. Some people, including his own long time allies, began coming forward and claiming that he’s been acting “inappropriately” with some women. Make that… “numerous” women.

Three high-profile San Diegans described sexual harassment allegations involving “numerous” female employees of Mayor Bob Filner who were subjected to “unfortunate and reprehensible circumstances” but refused to reveal victim identities or details of the alleged behavior.

On Thursday at 10 a.m., former San Diego City Councilwoman Donna Frye and lawyers Cory Briggs and Marco Gonzalez stood together and explained why they recently demanded that Filner resign…

“There is no doubt in my mind that what I am telling you and standing here talking about today. There is no doubt in my mind that these allegations are true,” Frye said.

As I hinted at above, this probably doesn’t sound like all that newsworthy of an item. A prominent Democrat is found to be unable to control himself around women, gets caught, a scandal ensues, blah, blah blah. Right? So he resigns in disgrace and we all move on with our lives. But wait! Not so fast.

San Diego Mayor Bob Filner released a statement on Thursday afternoon apologizing to city residents, hours after he was accused of sexually harassing numerous female employees.

“I begin today by apologizing to you. I have diminished the office to which you elected me. I have reached into my heart and soul and realize I must and will change my behavior,” he said in the DVD.

Yes, yes, we get it. You’re very sorry. And….?

“I am also humbled to admit that I need help. I have begun to work with professionals to make changes in my behavior and approach. In addition, my staff and I will participate in sexual harassment training provided by the city.

Seeking professional help. Check. Now, about that resignation…?

“In the next few days, I will be reaching out to those who now work to those who now work in the Mayor’s Office or have previously worked for me – both men and women – to personally apologize for my behavior.”

I only ask that you give me an opportunity to prove I am capable of change, so that the vision I have for our city’s future can be realized,” he said.

Wait a minute. What? You’re not leaving?

I get that we’re now living in the age of apologies, second chances and forgiveness. That’s been obvious for a little while now, but there’s something missing from the equation here. When a certain GOP Governor (because this happens in both parties) spent a bit too much time hiking the Appalachian Trail, he had the good sense to step off the stage for a while before asking for another turn at bat. Client Number Nine headed out for better than half a decade and a couple of failed TV shows before deciding that he’d like to be Comptroller of the Big Apple. Even Anthony Weiner had enough sense to go to ground for a while.

Not for nothing here, Bob, (can we call you Bob?) but aren’t you skipping a couple of steps? You come out and confess to the deeds, ask for forgiveness, and move on to your next day at the office all in the same speech? Are the people of San Diego actually going to let you get away with this?

Since he is a Democrat, his polling among single women will go up. A Republican’s polling would go down. The Dems go out on a limb and stick together to protect their own and the media help them. The GOP just wants their malfeasors off stage as soon as possible because they know the media will brand them as emblematic of the whole party’s bad attitude toward woman, morality, hypocrisy etc.

Are the people of San Diego actually going to let you get away with this?

In this mornings San Diego Tribune, some 60+% want him to resign. His Chief of Staff resigned yesterday. 3 others of his staff have resigned in the past month.

But he did offer the “Geezer Defense”. Something to the affect that times had changed (yeah, 40 years ago), yet Ol’ Bob didn’t.

Nothing new here anyway. Republicans wage war on women. Democratic pols just make “waitress sandwiches” out of them……..when they’re not killing them in drunk driving accidents.

Oh, BTW, a couple weeks ago we also learned that Bob gave his okay to a change in developer plans, AFTER the developer gave $100k to two of Bob’s favorite charities. When the news hit the papers, the money was sent back. Ol’ Bob claimed that all of this occurred without his knowledge.

One of his staffer’s quit….but not before saying BOB KNEW ALL ABOUT IT.

GarandFan on July 13, 2013 at 12:08 PM

Once again, it was easy to tell the party the mayor belonged to because the news stories failed to mention it. They did let slip that the democrat councilwoman went to the local democrat leadership asking him to resign, but nary a mention of his affiliation.

This bizarre slimy worm won the mayor’s race by a razor thin margin over his GOP opponent (technically it’s a non-partisan position under the city manager form of govt., but seriously). That opponent was a long-serving council member with a real business background and a clean/high profile in fighting the fiscal mismanagement of the city for years, who was gay. (That GOP candidate’s closest GOP rival, the former city DA, was also gay)

So you had a typically stupid Dem congressional seat-warmer, with no accomplishments and a publicly known record of bizarre and sicko behavior beat one of the few local figures with a legit resume on averting/fixing the city’s serious financial troubles (who happened to be gay, besides).

THIS is how degraded the country is, and the city is. Oh – but the worm of course made all the open or wink-wink signals to the public “servants” (ha!) that the unsustainable and obscene river of money would continue. That, plus the pathetic illiterate bloc voting behavior of racial minorities for Dems, and voila – a ridiculous candidate beats an impressive one.

Personally I’m hoping he stays on forever, and further degrades and embarrasses the city – everyone deserves it. And f**k the airhead “progressive” enviro-fascist surfboard-shaper’s wife and council member who called for his resignation – she and her ilk are among the most repugnant (saying something) of the know-nothing “cool” coastal elites that have ruined CA and whose mindset is close to ruining the country.

San Diego Mayor: 59% want Filner to quit

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2013/jul/13/tp-59-in-poll-say-mayor-should-quit/

sentinelrules on July 13, 2013 at 12:39 PM

A pattern maybe…

August 2007 Filner was charged with accosting a female United Ailines staffer..

November 2007 just before he was scheduled to go to trial (December) he entered an Alford plea after prosecutors reduced the charges. While not a guilty plea this in essence is an admission if it had gone to trial he would have lost..

As a resident of the city of San Diego.. I’m really furious because not only was this public knowledge but in private top democrats (Lori Saldana former state legislator) advised the local party leaders 2 years ago that Filner had a histroy of abusive, and harrasssing behavior towards woman. But unions and the party were more interested in protecting their interests than woman.

Any recall or new election the bills should be handed to the democrats

theblacksheepwasright on July 13, 2013 at 12:40 PM

My point about both GOP mayoral candidates being gay was to highlight once again how orwellian and absurd our “politics” have become – as the GOP can be smeared as bigoted towards gays even as in this case the most impressive public figures put forward by the party are gay (and neither of which makes a big deal out of it, at all). Oh, there was one other GOP aspirant – a former Marine and state legislator who struck me as a bit slippery the first time I met him, before his first assembly race.

Sure enough, right towards the end, as he was failing against the council member who eventually became the GOP candidate, he had a miraculous attack of conscience and statesmanship, and put out a video saying he was running as a “non-partisan” candidate. His video was a classic of our era – ridiculous baseless claims that “partisan bickering” was the problem, and the clear implication that his party (the GOP is utterly powerless throughout the state and has been for years) was to blame. Sickening beyond words – but then again it’s nice to know that I correctly sized him up in 10 seconds upon meeting him the first time!

This guy is a toad and everyone in San Diego has known it for YEARS. I heard stuff about him when he was on the city council in the early 1990s, before he was elected to Congress.

But all the Republicans I know there supported him for Mayor, knowing what a d-bag he is, because the Republican candidate was too conservative (e.g., prolife.)

The city is a basket case now anyway. Too many years of bad management, poor schools that chased all the good families out, and too many illegal immigrants have ruined what used to be the nicest city in California and one of the nicest in the country. They really haven’t had a decent mayor there since Pete Wilson.

birdwatcher on July 13, 2013 at 12:52 PM

theblacksheepwasright, recall that what you have in CA (and esp. San Diego) is the equivalent of a gigantic tourist restaurant in an unbelievable location with an unbelievable view – which also has horrible food and disastrously bad service. People come/stay for those things provided by nature (the view), and DESPITE the terrible mismanagement and quality of the experience otherwise. One generation ago it was the best-run administrative entity on the planet – now, it is mostly Third World. Warp speed degradation.

If CA were, geographically, similar to OH or IA (nothing against those states, just sayin’), it would be half-empty and similar to Detroit by now. Only the parasites and misery-managers and freaks would stay.

IceCold on July 13, 2013 at 12:52 PM

Sex scandals have always been a resume enhancer for the Democrats. They wrote sexual harassment law and then let the sexual harasser in chief get off. It’s when you combine the harassment with stupid (getting call girls or displaying your package on Facebook) that things get tacky. As long as it’s a he said, she said, they’re fine because they can just attack the accuser and move on. With Weiner, they had the Facebook pictures and with Client #9, they had the records which, besides that, in Spitzer’s case he was going after people for those crimes as a prosecutor.

bflat879 on July 13, 2013 at 12:55 PM

These guys only resign when they lose all support. Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank and others had political capital to spare. It also takes a certain amount of shamelessness, of course.

What is happening in San Diego is what the Democrats want to happen in Texas. San Diego is (was?) the last bastion of conservatism in California. Progressives have continuously attacked the foundations of natural law to support their own ends.

The constant complaining about the liberal double standard (it is true) is still boring, especially when it only reaches the people who are predisposed to the comparison. Progressives don’t give a shit and laugh all the way to the goal posts.

Actually BillH, it’s better having the slimy freak at the head of the pack. Tarnishes the appeal a bit, vs. the cool coastal idiocy/fascism of Frye. Plus, she strikes me as a bit dim, enough so that she might actually be confused when her simplistic good-govt. instincts run into the naked self-dealing and greed of the public “servants” and their unions.

But I shouldn’t be wasting electrons this way. For years, the only approach I can sustain, both with regard to SD and the US in general, is “I just live here”. As there is a dearth of actual fellow citizens to relate to, I simply don’t. (I mean citizen in a meaningful sense, not passport color)

The allegations are not so serious — sexual harassment, not sexual assault. And he has “enemies”, so of course. And despite the “apology”, he’s “confident that a fair and independent investigation will support [his] innocence”. In the single-party system that is California, his job comes down to, does he have enough dirt on the competition to stay on top.

Kenosha Kid on July 13, 2013 at 2:21 PM

Speaking of Bilbray, don’t watch almost any TV but happened to catch one of his commercials during last fall’s campaign. Standing with a surfboard on the beach, blathering on about “environmental” crap. Puke.

Yes, yes, one must pander to the ignorance, bigotry, and stupidity of one’s audience, I suppose, if the path of education, leadership, and progress is forsaken. But after seeing that I was not sorry to see him go, even if (of course) to a slimy, much worse Dem.

It’s so embarrassing, in a way, to be an intelligent, wordly, rational, independent thinking American. Especially here, where so many “educated” people are so clueless and misinformed about the world and the way it works, and SO consumed by these idiotic fake religions like environmentalism. Not just the masses – the arrogance and irrationality of “scientists” for example at Scripps Inst. will take your breath away. It’s as if Lysenkoism were a grass-roots movement, instead of a power play to gain advantage under a psychotic murdeous tyrant. And the “scientists” of today willingly, enthusiastically dive into this ugly, idiotic form of lysenkoism …..

Has Hot Air devoted any blogs to Bob McDonnell’s fall from grace?

libfreeordie on July 13, 2013 at 3:16 PM

I guess pedophilia would be about it. What is the world coming to?

djl130 on July 13, 2013 at 12:16 PM

Umm, not even that. Isn’t that the issue with Menendez? He’s still in office and the media is hushing this up. Haven’t heard a peep about it for months. Funny, the media had a completely different standard when it was the Catholic church being silent on pedophilia. Now they are engaging in the secular equivalent along with their fellow democrats in the democrat party

He kept his hand clean, his thingie in his pants and it’s all legal, his wife’s dough, in VA.

So, what is your take?

The reporters don’t even mention that Filner is a D.

You are the least intelligent troll and the biggest hypocrite bigot around.

Schadenfreude on July 13, 2013 at 3:30 PM

obama’s fall from grace…but then he never had any.

This depicts perfectly what obama is, has done, intentionally.

Schadenfreude on July 13, 2013 at 3:33 PM

When a certain GOP Governor (because this happens in both parties) spent a bit too much time hiking the Appalachian Trail, he had the good sense to step off the stage for a while

All the explanation you need right there. Way too little of that good sense around anymore, even (especially?) among our ‘leaders’.

‘Get me that Sanford guy on the phone, will ya, hon, you know the former gov of SC. Yeah, that guy, I’m sure he’ll have some good advice on this subject.’

Michael Ramirez right on again… I expect any day now he’ll be be frog-marched into tax court on trumped-up charges.

Unfortunately for us though, that tarnishing will never be dark enough or dull enough for some segments of the population here. I agree that Frye is about a bright as a struck match tossed into Mission Bay, my point- and yours, too- is Filner is an awful person. He’s a thug, no two ways about it. He’s the JEF writ small. At least Frye wouldn’t be the worthless dirtball Filner is. I really wish for a return to the days we had Pete Wilson, or even Roger Hedgecock as mayor. Right or wrong, at least those two gave a damn about the city.

BillH on July 13, 2013 at 5:08 PM

And yah- Bilbray wasn’t a lot better. I didn’t give a flying F what DeMaio did in the bedroom- he actually looked like someone who could handle the problems we face.

BillH on July 13, 2013 at 5:10 PM

All right, look. Let’s go over this one more time, slowly.

1. Having sex with girls can be really fun.

2. Having sex with girls can be so much fun that it sticks in the mind. In other words, having found about sex with girls to be a blast, it’s easy for a fellow to think about sex (more or less) all the time and wish to be having it (more or less) all the time. The technical term for this state of mind is called Horn Dogginess.

3. Under no circumstance whatever does this internal horde of devouring naughty thoughts translate to any place in the real world. In the real world, the pizza delivery is almost always just a pizza delivery, office assistants are almost always just trying to assist at the office, and so on. The real world is not a porn, and a fellow should remember that the real women around him are not porn “actresses.”

“I am also humbled to admit that I need help. I have begun to work with professionals to make changes in my behavior and approach. In addition, my staff and I will participate in sexual harassment training provided by the city.

4. Professional help is rarely required. You can just do what men have done for all of history, grow the hell up. Stop assuming every attractive woman around you is a walking, talking vag!na. That kind of thing.

–We’ll cover why you don’t get to beat the jimminy out of every guy that makes you mad tomorrow, and maybe later, if necessary, why you don’t get to take other people’s things, even when you really, really want them.

Heh!

Before this story broke my girlfriend told me about him hitting on her when she was 19 and he was 50. Look at Filner, he LOOKS like a lecherous creep. And whaddaya know he IS a lecherous creep.

Whatever you do San Diego do not elect Nathan Fletcher he is spineless and reeks of ambition. If he had any balls he would have been out front with Carl DeMaio trying to reform pensions but he didn’t so he couldn’t get any traction for the Mayor’s race as a Republican. So he switches to “independent” only to hitch his star to the Democrats when he figures out he can’t fundraise being an independent…

I have a suggestion: why not permanently attach to him one of those shock collars, like for a dog that barks too much? Set it for about 500 volts. Give each woman he comes in contact with a remote to set it off. When we walk into the mayor’s office Monday morning and see nothing except a pile of ashes, the collar, and a pair of eyeballs giving you that “WTF just happened?” look, we’ll know that it was effective.

BillH on July 13, 2013 at 6:37 PM

Gee the Democrats are doing such a good job running this country that the citizens of San Diego decided to vote one in? A freak pervert at that? I truly had no idea and I live in La Jolla. San Diego, we’ll visit but we’ll not drop one dime in your fair city for a while and certainly not while you’ve selected a Democrat pervert as your city’s leader. In the recent past in one evening at the Gas-Lamp district it wouldn’t surprise me to spend $5000 – $8000 via convention center client entertainment. No more……

Oh, dude, Fletcher is bad news from the get-go. 5 minutes into the campaign and we could see through him. He really is as low as Filner. Small wonder he couldn’t get the financing as an R.

Unfortunately though, the next nearest entertainment of that caliber is @ 90 miles north of you. You might do OK in Escondido…
