Spitzer: Dems trying to sabotage my campaign

posted at 12:41 pm on July 11, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

This should be a pretty good day for Eliot Spitzer. A new poll shows him with a significant lead in the Democratic primary for New York City comptroller, perhaps more of a result of name recognition than forgiveness. He hasn’t yet made the ballot, though, and CBS reports that Spitzer thinks his party’s trying to sabotage his candidacy:

Eliot Spitzer has launched explosive allegations against his own party.

The former New York governor claims a group of Democrats is trying to prevent him from getting on the ballot for city comptroller. It’s a race against time to collect the signatures he needs to run, CBS 2’s Marcia Kramer reported Wednesday.

Spitzer must be a pretty scary guy because his entry into the Democratic primary for comptroller has mobilized union officials and Democratic Party insiders to mount a blatant campaign to intimidate people from helping him run.

“The thing that has emerged over the past couple of days is the coalitions that have been trying to force people not to work for me,” Spitzer said.

Spitzer is in a last-minute mad dash to qualify for the ballot. He has 100 well-paid people helping him collect the necessary 3,750 signatures. Friends were to hold a petition party Wednesday night. He told CBS 2’s Kramer the effort to keep him off the ballot represents all that’s bad in the New York political process — a process that has seen dozens of elected officials charged in corruption cases.

Well, not all that’s bad in New York politics. The local chapter of the National Organization for Women wants voters to remember Spitzer’s past exploitation of women as Client #9, for which Spitzer has shown insufficient remose, according to its chapter president:

Sonia Ossorio, president of the National Organization for Women’s New York City chapter, said Wednesday that voters need to think about Spitzer’s business with the sex trade, which she said enslaves and abuses women. …

But Ossorio said the primary season is moving fast and there’s little opportunity to re-write history now.

“He’s had five years to do that. I haven’t seen that. I don’t see the good works. I don’t see where he’s actually owned up,” Ossorio said in front of City Hall.

One can see why Big Apple Democrats might be happy to see Spitzer miss his chance to turn the election into even more of a circus than it is with Anthony Weiner on the ballot. On the other hand, maybe they just want to nominate someone who bothers to vote.

Hey Sonia, What Spitzer did was no worse than Bill Clinton’s serial rape of women, abuse of power to keep them from talking, and otherwise dismal treatment of women. But you all were okay with that so your loathing of a creepy guy employing whores is more than a little hypocritical.

What Clinton did was much worse than Spitzer’s transgressions. Your point is well-taken regarding the hypocrisy.

Spitzer has 100 paid staffers and is having trouble finding a total of 3200 signatures? That’s 32 per staffer spread over days or weeks.

Poor baby. A couple of days ago, he tried to claim that he was only guilty of lying about ‘personal sexual activity.’

He had to be reminded that he lied about criminal activity that involved sex.

HALPERIN: But lying as the Governor of New York is not disqualifying?

SPITZER: It depends about what. I think we all know that politicians dissemble all the time about negotiations, on substantive issues and probably on personal issues as well. And so, there’s a question of where, when, how, and on what issue. I think there’s slightly greater subtlety to this in terms of the art of both governance and how you then determine whether what people have done is disqualifying them.

HALPERIN: One more: an elected official, Governor of New York, Comptroller of New York, lying about his or her personal life when asked about it in a public capacity, that’s fine?

SPITZER: No, I didn’t say it was fine. You asked if it was disqualifying. We’re going down a path here where it requires more time to parse out what that boundary is between private and the public. Now, I’ll give you something that’s disqualifying: if people lied about their taxes, not having paid their taxes and all the rest, then I think that is disqualifying.

HALPERIN: But you lied about illegal activity.

SPITZER: I lied about personal sexual activity, yes. I did that. I’m not trying to diminish itt.

HALPERIN: You weren’t lying about an affair, a consensual affair. You were lying about but illegal activity.

SPITZER: OK, that’s correct.

HALPERIN: So, but you’re saying lying about illegal activity to you does not disqualify.

SPITZER: I will let the public make that determination.

You would almost think that Spitzer believes he is Marion Barry or something.

The cherry on top? He put people in jail for doing the “dissembling” he now boasts about.

HALPERIN: So, but you’re saying lying about illegal activity to you does not disqualify.

SPITZER: I will let the public make that determination.

As a prosecutor, he was “the people“. And he determined prostitutes and johns needed some time at the Graybar Hotel.

The hypocrisy is strong with this one.

That little interview right there tells everything a person needs to know about that sleazeball. He’s not honest, he’s not sorry, he’s dodging the issue, and he doesn’t see anything wrong with what he did. He’s like the whole lot of these losers (Clinton, Weiner, Sanford, etc.)…they’re only regret is that they got caught. And this “love” for public service makes me retch.

FIFY.

One would think that New Yawkahs wouldn’t want Spitzer doing with THEIR money what he did with HIS money, but that would give too much credit to New Yawkahs.

Steve Z on July 11, 2013 at 2:22 PM

Why would a guy want to be New York City Comptroller at a salary of $185,000 when the Mayor makes $225,000? Maybe you can steal more as Comptroller. What is wrong with Democrats that they would vote for such men as Weiner and Spitzer?

“Because power corrupts, society’s demands for moral authority and character increase as the importance of the position increases.” ~ John Adams

Truly Democrats are a flawed people if not a cult for the mentally ill.

SpiderMike on July 11, 2013 at 2:51 PM

True story: Five years ago, a few months after Eliot Spitzer resigned in disgrace, I was having breakfast with a friend who’d just suffered a serious and painful loss when a civic project in which he deeply believed and in which he had sunk a great deal of capital went bust.

Spitzer, in jogging gear, came into the restaurant, spotted us, and ran over to the table. “So you’re out of business?” said the ex-governor with a bizarre grin. “I mean, come on, it was never going to work, right? You knew that, right?”

His behavior was so glaringly inappropriate, so tonally deaf and such a weird assault for a man who had supposedly been humbled as he had been humbled, that I figured something out I had not understood until that moment: Eliot Spitzer is nuts.

I don’t mean he’s nuts in a tinfoil-hat sense. I mean that he doesn’t respond to reality in a normal way, and therefore misjudges reality and himself.

Remember that Spitzer took office in a colossal landslide victory in 2006, a victory that gave him unprecedented leeway. He then proceeded systematically to destroy himself.
