Open thread: In the beginning, there was “Sharknado”

posted at 8:41 pm on July 11, 2013 by Allahpundit

The “serious” post on Egypt has 12 comments as I write this. Last night’s ode to schlock has 140 and nearly twice that many “likes” on Facebook. It’s quite clear what’s happened here: Like the rest of America, you guys have “Sharknado” fee-vah and won’t be able to concentrate on news until the itch is scratched. I won’t fight you. Scratch away.

At 9 p.m. ET on Syfy, you will believe that bad weather can make giant fish fly. (And yes, of course there’s a climate-change plotline.) Judging from the buzz on Twitter today, this is going to be a social-media phenomenon on the order of a presidential debate; here’s your hashtag in case you want to group-watch but don’t have real friends.

While we wait, read io9′s interview with screenwriter Thunder Levin (yes, really), who’s very much in on the joke. Exit quotation: “What does it say about humans that when poor displaced sharks are ravaged by nature’s uncaring fury we try to kill them with chainsaws? I think we need to take a good long look in the mirror over that one.”

Boy, they reeeeeally hated that kid in the red shirt! One shark swoops down from the sky and takes off his arm. He hits the ground where a shark starts chewing off his leg. Coup de grace? A hammerhead falls ‘blam’! on his face.

Hahahahahaha!!

Laughed.
Cried.
Think I peed myself a little.

Anyone who feels their life was changed by Sharknado, we’re having a meeting to try to work out what it all means, right? Like, what we can do to bring the changes inside us to the world, to make it better, right?

BYO-Doritos. Probably at Bishop’s place. Not sure yet. Watch AP’s tweets for details.

Hey, why not offer college credit analyzing Sharkado. Perhaps a sequel in black and white with French subtitles.

Yeppers. When the dude did his chainsaw C-Section escape from the shark’s belly, he was screaming like a newborn!

Was anyone else comforted knowing that a giant SUV saved humanity, if not Gaia herself, from the swirling winds of death?

So deep.

Texas T on July 12, 2013 at 7:58 AM

OT: Pacific Rim was AWESOME. Go see it. Lots of action. Huge robots and monsters. This is an awesome summer movie.

LaughterJones on July 12, 2013 at 8:01 AM

A giant SUV loaded with extra hydrocarbons, to boot!

Mr. Bingley on July 12, 2013 at 8:10 AM

It should be required daily viewing for congress. Open and close every day with a viewing of Sharknado. I think we would all be much better off for it.
