New Live Action video shows abortionist misleading on fetal pain

posted at 8:01 am on July 1, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Live Action has a new undercover video out today, in which a 27-weeks-pregnant undercover reporter goes back to the same clinic and same abortionist featured in their previous video.  In that earlier episode, Dr. Carmen Landau likened a late-term abortion injection that kills a baby to “a flu shot.”  This time, Landau once again can’t answer whether a child can feel pain at the 27th week of gestation, even though it’s clearly established that the entire neural network for pain has developed by the 20th week.

Even more remarkably, Landau tells the Live Action reporter that a late-term abortion — which involved injecting poison into the uterus, killing the child, and leaving it there for more than two days — is safer than a full-term delivery. Kermit Gosnell’s victims probably disagree:

Live Action has released the sixth video in its latest undercover investigation, Inhuman: Undercover in America’s Abortion Industry.  The video, found at www.liveaction.org/inhuman, exposes abortion doctors at Southwestern Women’s Options in Albuquerque, New Mexico revealing disturbing aspects of the facility’s protocol, including the practice of leaving women alone in hotel rooms to deliver their dead children.

An unnamed counselor at the facility advises Live Action’s 27-week-pregnant investigator:

If we can’t catch it [delivery of the dead baby – the final stage of the abortion procedure] early enough, which has happened … then you’ll want to unlock the door to the hotel room, get your cell phone, and just sit on the toilet.  You don’t have to look at anything … you can stay on the phone with us until the doctor and nurse get there[.]

Dr. Carmen Landau echoes this advice, telling the Live Action investigator to “sit on the toilet” and “unlock the hotel room.”  “Just sit there,” Landau says, “and you would not move until we come and get you.”

Here’s the “doctor” trying to duck the issue of fetal pain at 27 weeks:

The new video also presents an abortion counselor offering misleading information on whether the 27-week pre-born child will feel the lethal abortion injection.  “[If the baby]‘s bottom-down, it’ll insert through the baby’s bottom, [and] if it’s head-down, it’ll be inserted through the cranium.”

“I don’t know if it’s developed enough to feel that,” she says.  “It might be.”  The Live Action video includes references to K.S. Anand, an expert on fetal pain, and the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, showing that pre-born children at 20 weeks and older definitely feel pain – likely more acutely than older children do.

Landau seems as well-informed an oddsmaker as she is a physician.

Update: I originally had the abortionist’s first name as “Carol”; it’s Carmen.  I’ve corrected it above.

From the National Right to Life Committee’s web site (www.nrlc.org):

The argument used by many advocates of abortion — that abortion is safer than childbirth — is difficult to defend in light of medical evidence to the contrary. The Abortion Surveillance Branch of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) maintains that induced abortion is safer than childbirth and that the serious complication rate is less than one percent. Yet there is no agreement among investigators as to what constitutes a major complication and no real national system for the reporting these kind of statistics, making the accuracy of such assertions questionable. Furthermore, the experiences of private physicians and gynecologists do not seem to support the validity of the CDC’s claim.

Daniel J. Martin, M.D., Ltd., clinical instructor at St. Louis University Medical School, St. Louis, Missouri, has said, “The impact of abortion on the body of a woman who chooses abortion is great and always negative. I can think of no beneficial effect of a social abortion on a body.”

Why is this so? Because induced abortion is the premature, willful, and violent penetration of a closed and safeguarded system — a system in which nearly every cell, tissue and organ of a woman’s reproductive system has been specially transformed and activated to carry out the function of sustaining and nourishing the developing child. Not surprisingly, any violation of the integrity of that system can lead to serious complications. Physical problems range from hemorrhage and infection to sterility and even death. Psychological effects range from depression and mental trauma to divorce and even suicide.

NancyJo Mann is one of many who has experienced both kinds of complications. Infection and bleeding followed her abortion which eventually led to a hysterectomy. Recalling her experience, she said, “Beforehand, I liked myself. I had never entertained the idea of abortion. But the minute that needle went through my abdomen, I hated it, because I knew it could not be reversed. I wanted to scream, ‘Don’t do this to me!’”

Listened to my local Pacifica station last night and their talking points are out for the Texas special session:

1 – Roe v Wade limits abortion to the first 24 weeks. It is only in very rare medically necessary circumstances is an abortion performed in Texas after that.

2 – Abortion is painless for the woman and the baby.

3 – Cutting the term from 24 to 20 weeks is a step down that slippery slope to ban abortion.

3 – The law forces the closure of all but 5 abortion clinics in Texas.

4 – Upon closing the clinics, Texas woman will have to drive 400 miles to get an abortion.

5 – In a total contradiction of everything that is perfect and reasonable now, women will get abortions no matter what laws are passed. Coat hangars!

Yes, on publicly subsidized radio, they are pushing the most fantastically obtuse rants for unlimited publicly funded abortions as a right to be protected AND promoted in the cause of women’s health.

I think another very horrific and pervasive lie practiced here is the one women, struggling with their own past decisions, tell themselves as justification. They know this is always a difficult issue but they want to preserve the right of choice for other women, as if that, “well everybody else does it” morality can somehow remove their own burden.
Only God can do that. Sorry left, I meant only Obama can do that. Well really that is your only choice. The left has mastered converting contrition to campaign contributions. I just wish they adopted the same honest ads for planned parenthood as they do the cigarette companies.

I’ll bet PP explains to their patients that aborting their FIRST pregnancy increases their chance of breast cancer by a huge margin, too.
Yup, I’m sure they must, since it’s all about women’s health, and all.

davidk on July 1, 2013 at 9:23 AM

Abortion is identical to slavery in many ways. Abortionists, like slave owners, turn away from the truth for the sake of profit at the expense of human life.

You cannot logically oppose slavery while supporting abortion. This “doctor” took an oath to protect life but realized that having a sizable bank account and admiration from her fellow pro-murderers was more important.

I think you’re partially right but more people are realizing that girls are being aborted which does take away from the “pro-woman” stance.

I argued this same point to somebody who was collecting signatures to promote Planned Parenthood. You should have seen the anger in his face as the conversation progressed.

Actually, younger people are more pro-life than older ones. They realize 25% of their peers have been lost to abortion. Everytime they and two of their friends walk down the school hallway to class, it SHOULD have been them and three people. They also realize that women of childbearing age when Roe v Wade was decided are sure as hell not going to take a 25% haircut to their Medicaid/Social Security benefits to ease the financial burden they created on the next generation.

I argued this same point to somebody who was collecting signatures to promote Planned Parenthood. You should have seen the anger in his face as the conversation progressed.

What on earth was this idiot doing collecting signatures? How the hell is that supposed to help? And what ended up happening with the two of you?

Maddie on July 1, 2013 at 9:37 AM

I have always wondered why there should be a need for non-medically necessary abortions after the first couple of months. You have to know you are pregnant at that point and are just putting off the decision. Lowering the legal time frame does nothing more than force a woman to make a decision sooner. Do you really need five or six months to decide if you want a baby? Beyond that, if you’ve already gone through most of the pregnancy, why wouldn’t you just wait a few more weeks and deliver and put the baby up for adoption? Abortion is terrible. Late term abortion is horrific and unnecessary.

It’s a losing battle and will be as long as the media backs it.

Mock them, reject their premise, point out the hypocrisy and half truths and don’t a spend a dime on their products. Our local rag has pretty much reduced itself to old white liberal editors from San Fransisco and San Antonio and a stable of 26 year old writers that can’t seem to string two coherent sentences together while giving glowing coverage to all things liberal. The rest is AP links. This is the Houston Comical and I bet most single paper towns are similar.

In a region of over 6 million residents their subscription rate is barely 300,000. To put that into perspective, even if the unique address residency holds for the surrounding area as it is in Houston proper, that is a delivery rate of just over 7%.

When you cut your cable or satelite tell them its because you want to be able to pick your content, not subsidize MSNBC. They are hearing alot of that.

When you walk into a business that has CNN on, tell them you don’t want to be near it. They will usually turn it off or change it. The more they hear that the more they will have to respect their customer base or suffer for it.

Adopt liberal tactics. Don’t take it laying down.

DanMan on July 1, 2013 at 9:48 AM

This is why the Texas Abortion law is so huge. These physicians aren’t for the most part Ob-Gyns but Generalists who have decided to specialize in abortion or rarely they are ObGyns who have given up their practice. Anyway the “must have hospital privileges” part of the law will kill them. It truly will cut abortion doctors in Texas down to a number you can count on one hand.

It’s a mixed bag for me. If it was banning abortions after 20 weeks only, it would have 99 percent support. But most abortions are done under 12 weeks, even under 10 weeks, and effectively banning
those will make Texas into Ireland, where abortions are banned period. And there could be a possible voter backlash down the road I fear with a majority female Texas House? I wonder. But you will see more physicians prescribing RU486/misoprostol in their offices, something I don’t currently do because there’s a clinic to go to if they want that, and now there won’t be.

“Doctor” Landau REALLY thinks there’s less pain having a stillborn at 28 weeks than delivering a healthy live baby?

And don’t look down into the toilet–the mother might realize she just killed a real human being…

Everything…EVERYTHING that distinguishes the female member of our species from the male has to do with their design for gestation, nurturing, and raising children; that is physiologically, emotionally, and psychologically, whether they use those attributes for their intended purpose or not. And you don’t think there are going to be negative consequences when we violate this design violently?

You have to be distorted in your soul to think otherwise.

justltl on July 1, 2013 at 10:40 AM

And, after re-reading Doc Marcus’s post a number of times, I think he was maybe just suggesting that a more restricted bill, making it applicable to only abortions after 20 weeks, would be more practical in addressing the issue at hand, i.e., late term abortions.
Sorry.
Carry on.

docflash on July 1, 2013 at 9:13 AM

By that definition a lot of issues are “winners” for the Left…should we avoid those too? Bear in mind that even with the media all-in on this, polls show 60% what abortions banned in the 2nd trimester, and 80% want them banned in the 3rd…don’t get caught up in what the liberal media tells you, or how it’ll make Republicans look, because the bottom line is this isn’t as winning an issue for them as you’re led to believe.

Personally, I think those numbers would be even more tilted toward pro-life if we called a spade a spade, instead of walking on eggshells more afraid of what the Left will say about us. Tell people, in graphic detail, exactly what Wendy Davis is advocating. Explain how it is done, and exactly what is involved. Talk about the deplorable conditions at these centers, and how they’ve led to needless deaths, and ask why certain basic standards should not be required. Instead, we cower, afraid we’ll offend…our voices need to be just as loud, especially since we’re speaking for the millions of voices lost since abortion was legalized.

Ten years ago I had a missed miscarriage (a retained dead fetus) at about 7 weeks, and was given misoprostol in preference to a D&C. It landed me in the ER. I understand that my OB/Gyn practice doesn’t use it anymore since too many women have had similar reactions. It is *not* a safe drug, especially when being used by women who are trying to keep what they are doing quiet, and therefore would be leery of going to an ER, and I don’t trust the average clinic to have appropriate facilities to deal with the problems.

Absolutely…I’ve seen some argue that it’s not alive until it takes a breath outside the womb. That’s why Wendy Davis and her ilk argue against restricting abortions at all, because to them it remains a ‘clump of cells’ until it’s actually born.
