Obama, Clinton favorability fall in latest WaPo/ABC poll

posted at 8:41 am on June 26, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

That’s the lead from both the Washington Post and ABC News on their latest polling, but don’t get your hopes too high.  This isn’t an epic collapse, or even a shocking hit to the relative standing of either Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton.  It is, perhaps, the first sign that the scandals that have rocked the Obama administration over the last two months may seriously erode Obama’s political capital and make it more difficult to push through an agenda without significant help from Republicans on Capitol Hill:

A majority of Americans regard President Obama favorably, but his numbers have softened considerably among his fellow Democrats, according to new polling conducted by the Washington Post and ABC News.

Obama’s favorability stands at 53 percent, compared to 44 percent of Americans who view him unfavorably. While 85 percent of Democrats regard Obama favorably, the number of those who are strongly supportive of him has dropped since the start of the year. Just 58 percent of Democrats describe themselves as having a “strongly favorable” view of Obama, down from 72 percent who said the same in January. Obama’s numbers among liberal as well as moderate/conservative Democrats are also at their lowest levels in Post-ABC polling since prior to the Democratic National Convention in the summer of 2012.

ABC’s report notes the relative slide:

Six in 10 Americans in the latest ABC News/Washington Post poll see Clinton favorably, down 6 percentage points from her career high in January. Obama’s seen favorably by 53 percent, down 7 points from January and back to his pre-re-election level across most of 2012. …

The single-digit comedowns for Obama and Clinton are unsurprising. Since his re-election, the president’s waded into contentious policy areas such as gun control and immigration, while dealing with the Internal Revenue Service and National Security Administration controversies. Obama’s job approval likewise is off from his post-election high in ABC/Post polls.

Clinton, for her part, has stepped away from her popular role as secretary of state and may be seen in an increasingly partisan light given wide discussion of her possible candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2016. Last week she said she hopes to see a woman president, and, even without being a formal candidate, was endorsed by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Missouri). A campaign fundraising committee has been created to support Clinton (without her endorsement), as has one to oppose her.

Clinton’s slide comes from both Republicans (-10) and independents (-7), but among the latter she’s still strongly positive at 58/35.  Even among conservatives, Hillary performs rather well at 40/57, much better than Obama does at 31/67.  She has lost six points among Democrats but still has an 80/13 favorability rating within her own party, a solid showing.

Obama’s woes mainly come from his own party, in contrast.  He lost 7 points among Democrats, and 12 points among self-described liberals, since January.  He’s also dropped significantly among independents, going from 60/36 in January to 49/47 now.  Overall, though, he’s still at 53/44 in the WaPo/ABC series among general-population adults, which isn’t too bad considering the last two months he’s had.  It’s his lowest rating since September 2012, but he’s still solidly in positive territory. All things considered — with the IRS, NSA, and Benghazi controversies raging — it could have been a lot worse.

Or maybe it already is. Fox News’ new poll puts Obama’s favorability under water for the first time ever:

Overall, Obama’s job rating is underwater by eight percentage points:  43 percent of voters approve and 51 percent disapprove of his performance.  That’s close to his previous rating of 44-50 percent in mid-June.  A year ago the president’s rating was in positive territory: 48-43 percent (June 2012).

Approval of the president has rarely been lower among Democrats (78 percent) and liberals (73 percent).  And Obama’s 31 percent approval among independents matches previous lows established August and September 2011.

Meanwhile, the president’s personal popularity is down to 47 percent favorable.  And at 51 percent unfavorable, this is the first time more than half of voters have had a negative opinion of Obama.

The negative sentiment carries beyond the White House: 71 percent think the government in Washington has too much power, and 62 percent say they don’t trust the federal government — matching a previous record high (July 2011).

Readers might dismiss the Fox poll because of Fox’ political orientation, but their polling has generally been in the middle of the road on Obama.  We’ll get more polling over the next couple of weeks, but the similarities between the two polls — especially on liberal and Democratic erosion in Obama’s support — point to a rough summer for the White House.

Galt2009 on June 26, 2013 at 8:54 AM

Amazing, within a few miles of each other, two separate groups were overheard discussing how “bad” Obama is doing.

The first, overheard in a local business was pretty much that Obama had destroyed the economy, and was intent on destroying the country, and unemployment was going to grow and soon since a lot of local businesses were struggling hard, well after being promised that Obama’s policies would lift up everyone and get the economy moving….like years ago.

The second group, overheard in a major nationwide retail store was along the lines of “Obama is doing bad because…” and went on over a few minutes to note that Obama promised this and didn’t deliver, and Obama promised another program and didn’t deliver, and Obama was ignoring the Black folks, turned his back on his own”…that sort of thing.”

Both would drive the polling numbers down, but neither one is compatible with the other.

Wish this Road to Damascus epiphany had come about last summer…might have made a real difference. But, no, both groups tended to vote for the guy presently occupying the White House. This is the Toledo area, you know…hotbed of unions, Dems, and love for the Light Giver.

I agree, but sadly the GOP is a large part of the problem, not the solution.

Regarding the polls, Hillary will always be tied to Obama as she carried out his policies. He wasn’t serving her policies, she was serving his. No escaping that.

I’d like to see the poll questions and who they polled. Many polls are result driven.

‘It is just so irresponsible. We’re looking for an all-in energy policy that basically secures our nation, makes us less dependent on foreign oil or foreign energy, and we can do that, but we have to use everything we have, in balance with the environment and economy. That’s all we ever said. If you look at this in the big picture, eight billion tons of coal is being burned in the world. And if we talk about the environment and climate, and if you know a little about geography, the globe is round and climate is all around, if they believe that we stop burning coal in America completely, that’s one billion tons a year, one-eighth the consumption of the world, that we’re going to clean up the environment. They believe the world is still flat.’

When you get guys like Joe Manchin deciding that Obama is hurting America because Obama wants to shut down the coal energy industry…well, fine. But would a Joe Manchin be up in arms about Obama would Obama decide by ExecOrder to shut down wind farms in California because they kill birds?

Our elected representatives and Senators, governors and yes, even mayors, should be held to a Constitutional standard, not a self-interest standard. Unfortunately, over the decades, the practice of supporting a President because of the goodies one will get in the bling bag has enabled President after President to reign not as President but as Santa Claus…the good boys and girls get nice gifts, the bad boys and girls get lumps of coal, or would, were Obama not President…bye bye coal industry.

Until that happens ( our holding their feet to the fire on Constitutional grounds ) the pork will continue, and again and again so-called conservatives will vote in favor of Progressive policies because there is gold in it for them and their constituents…and the rest of us can go to hell so far as they are concerned.

So, as much as I would very very much like to see our elected officials vote in favor of the nation on this immigration garbage being rammed down our throats…it won’t happen…too many vested interests, too much promised pork, and too many willing to screw the rest of the Nation so long as some of their constituents or contributors can make a bundle.

Like Dilbert’s pointy-haired boss and the domeheaded dork that lords it over him, The One is a micromanaging power freak who still insists that he is powerless to control the results of the very things he micromanages. And that he is constantly thwarted by evil people who wish to destroy him, mainly due to his being possessed of greater wisdom they do not comprehend and are incapable of ever comprehending. (“Bitter clingers”, “they acted stupidly”, “Flat Earth Society”, “heads in the sand”, etc., etc.)

This behavior pattern is very common among UFO conspiracists, contactees, and similar fringe cult believers. As is the belief that one is a “Lightworker” or “Star Child”, an ascended being come to Earth to “raise the cosmic consciousness” of the rest of humanity.

Said “consciousness raising” invariably takes the form of humanity abandoning all technological civilization, and reverting to an agrarian-sociaist culture living at (at most) Bronze Age levels. With the “Lightworkers” as the “enlightened” ruling class. (No, democracy is not part of the program.)

Then, and only then, (the story goes) will Man be ready to join the Galactic Commonwealth. We will get to fly to the Andromeda Galaxy, though. As passengers in the Space Brothers’ flying saucers. Maybe.

(As an aside, it seems awfully funny that the Space Brothers don’t want us to achieve the technological supremacy they supposedly have. It’s almost like they don’t want any competitors.)

The One is simply one more example of the aberrational thought patterns of extremist groups, especially on the left. Said aberrations have existed for centuries (Google “Rosicrucians”), but they became epidemic in the post- World War Two period. Mainly due to the combination of air power and nuclear weapons, which made the “elite’” abruptly realize that they were no longer safe from the consequences of a war, even one they started. As such, they conclude they must have total power and control, and “de-evolve” civilization to a point where it can’t hurt them no matter what they do to it.

And in their minds, “civilization” is always “out to get them”, because of their “superiority”.

Another term for this, BTW, is “paranoid schizophrenia, Type 2A”. It usually comes with delusional ideation- and a propensity for violence.

Just thought you’d like to know.

Well, based on what happened in Texas when the GOP was trying to pass standards for hygiene and safety in abortion clinic operations, we can now add that the Dems apparently wish to run on not caring about the life and health of women. “My opponent stands for dirty women’s health care clinics!” should be a pretty good answer to Dem claims that the GOP stands for dirty water and dirty air.
