Oh, good: Obama’s “new” energy plan expected to raise electricity costs

posted at 1:21 pm on June 25, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

The War on Coal, et al. is back with a vengeance — and get ready to pay for the hefty pricetag, America. This afternoon, President Obama will be announcing his munificent intentions to combat climate change by using his august executive authority to — among other things — limit greenhouse gas emissions from existing power plants, increase appliance efficiency standards, and further “invest” in renewable energy development. Get excited:

In a speech at Georgetown University, the president will lay out what the administration is billing as a comprehensive plan built on three pillars: cutting the nation’s carbon pollution, leading global efforts to reduce carbon emissions and preparing the United States for the impacts of climate change. As part of that effort, Mr. Obama on Tuesday will sign a presidential memorandum directing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to start engaging with states, the private sector and other stakeholders to set carbon pollution standards for both new and existing carbon power plants.

The president, a senior administration official said, has “made it very clear his preference would be for Congress to act.” At this point, however, he is ready to rely on the existing authorities in the executive branch. …

Gee — lucky us. Obama’s EPA has already introduced several other ‘clean-air’ rules that have put some strict limits  on the coal industry, but federal regulations directly concerning carbon emissions are the holy grail for which many environmentalist groups have been waiting — and a very costly one at that.

But the move to impose greenhouse gas limits on existing plants — which account for a third of the nation’s greenhouse gas emissions and 40 percent of its carbon emissions — will raise consumers’ electricity prices in the short term as utilities are forced to shutter aging coal plants to comply with stricter pollution limits.

According to the Edison Electric Institute, a utility trade group, there are 1,142 coal-fired utilities in the United States and 3,967 natural-gas-fired plants, all of which would face new carbon limits under Obama’s proposal. Last year they accounted for nearly 68 percent of all electricity production, according to EEI, compared with nuclear and hydropower utilities, which made up 19 percent and 6.7 percent, respectively. All renewables combined amounted to 5.4percent of electricity generation in 2012.

Hmm. “In the short term” may have some degree of truth to it, given that natural gas is already providing a competitive substitute and its free-market development is going strong, but in the meantime, the premature and forcible redirection of our energy sector is going to cause real cost-of-living increases that are going to accomplish little-to-nothing to help us grow our struggling economy. This is just more of the same type of holier-than-thou, government-knows-best, top-down regulatory fiat that we’ve seen pushing electricity prices precipitously upwards in Europe over the past few years, to the detriment of their collective economy.

Anyhow, I doubt he’ll be mentioning this in his speech:

Environmentalists are concerned that the climate change strategy will just be a ploy to appease them in the face of plans to green light TransCanada Corp’s Keystone XL pipeline that will transport heavy crude (dirty oil sands) from Canada to US Gulf Coast refineries. Opponents of Keystone XL say this will override anything Obama has in store by way of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and controlling carbon dioxide.

It is less likely (though not impossible) that Obama will talk about Keystone tomorrow, but opponents think the climate change plan he unveils will be designed to wow and thus lay the stage for less opposition to Keystone when it is approved. We don’t expect a decision on Keystone XL until the end of this year, or perhaps even early next year.

It is truly amazing that an otherwise unremarkable pipeline, of which the United States is going to need many more in coming years to effectively cope with the oil-and-gas boom, could be even remotely considered a “tradeoff” for major regulations with a massive impact spanning multiple industries and all American energy consumers. Ridiculous.

Update: Oh, my:

President Barack Obama will ask the State Department not to approve the construction of the controversial Keystone XL pipeline unless it can first determine that it will not lead to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions, a senior administration official told The Huffington Post. …

The new Obama policy somewhat splits the difference — not killing the project outright, but ensuring that it meets a basic environmental standard. …

“As the executive order on Keystone contemplates, the environmental impacts will be important criteria used in the determination of whether the Keystone pipeline application will ultimately be approved at the completion of the State Department decision process,” said the senior administration official. “In today’s speech, the president will make clear that the State Department should approve the pipeline only if it will not lead to a net increase in overall greenhouse gas emissions.”

Obama’s “new” energy plan expected to raise electricity costs

Has President Obama ever offered a plan that actually saved Americans money in reality?

Didn’t think so.

Fundamental transformation is a helluva drug. Just like Hopium.

This is no surprise because he promised he would raise electricity rates.

Just another horrible promise he has kept.

He is fundamentally changing the ‘face’ of America…

I am gobsmacked that he is getting away with this.

Sad days, really sad days…

Why is this president intent on putting us back into another recession. We’re barely out of the last one. His knowledge of non-global warming (no statistically significant warming in the last 17 years… in fact the trend is currently for cooling) is non-existent. Everything he has done has driving up costs. He’s intent on creating a legacy, only it will be a legacy of being the worst president ‘evah’.

sadatoni on June 25, 2013 at 1:28 PM

He won’t be content until we’re all in the dark succumbing to heat or perishing in cold.

Congress should put their effort into fighting Obama’s regulatory fist instead of fighting U.S. citizens. They don’t have the guts, inclination or integrity to uphold the Constitution in face of executive assaults. That they don’t speaks volumes about who many of the members are.

INC on June 25, 2013 at 1:28 PM

So we’re looking at skyrocketing health care costs thanks to Obamacare. Skyrocketing energy costs thanks to Obama and the EPA. A devalued dollar thanks to Bernanke and the Fed. And already high food and gas prices(funny how we NEVER hear about that anymore). And that doesn’t even factor in the damage the amnesty bill could cause should Boehner refuse to stand his ground.

I guess Obama did keep one promise. He is fundamentally transforming this country. I just didn’t think he meant from a superpower into a third world banana republic.

Take that to the bank.

But if the power plants and conservative groups were smart, we’d line up one after the other and file suit after suit against the administration to tie this bull dookey up in courts for the next decade.

It won’t. If we don’t use the oil, China will, and will do so less efficiently than we would.

It won’t matter. They will find some way to rationalize how it’s better to let the oil go to China, and not let it despoil our countryside. They are dragging us down as fast as they can.

The NSA following our every move(while ignoring what happens inside mosques)? The press being prosecuted for doing their job? Americans abandoned and left to die by the State Dept? And now executive orders to destroy the coal and natural gas industries?

I figured Obama was a grave threat to this nation because he and a Democrat supermajority would ram through a radical left-wing agenda. And to an extent they have. Obamacare and Porkulus have blown up the budget and threaten to destroy the best health care system in the world. PattyJ on June 25, 2013 at 1:59 PM

Ultimately, O & the radical greens have as a main goal or at least as a positive metric is to raise the cost of all energy.
Let’s look at one key component of O’s plan: to increase investment in green energy. What does that do? Yes, it satisfies their desire to raise energy prices, and this is very damaging to an economy (but as O’s “Science” Czar John Hodren says they want to “de-develop the United States,” so hurting the economy is really the hidden goal, because that’s what de-development entails).

But a lot of people might say “I know, but to save the world, I’ll pay a few more cents on my utility bill.” But it’s not a few cents, as in Germany and elsewhere we are seeing green policies having a huge impact on electric bills. And actually it’s business and industry that is hurt the most by the high energy prices, and that will seriously damage a country’s economy, especially as industry flees to, or has a large competitive advantage in, countries with lower energy costs.
But, so what, it’s all to the save the world.
Well, even if you believed the AGW nonsense, it’s not sustainable to throw money down the toilet like that. Look what’s happening in Europe. But another huge point. At least with wind, it’s argued that it won’t even cut CO2. See page 28 of following GWPF report: Why is Wind Power So Expensive? http://www.thegwpf.org/images/stories/gwpf-reports/hughes-windpower.pdf

President Prissypants McChoomer has the poor, who will get government assistance to pay their bills, and the rich, who can afford the higher rates, and the black community, who vote for him because he is black.

It’s the middle class that will suffer.

I don’t think it will be that much longer before Canadian patience runs out, and who can blame them?

This is all by design. This administration is not as inept as we assume, things are proceeding exactly as they want.

Where is my free car, and my free driver eh O?

Sad days my lady…

It’s stunning that pro-legal immigration/anti-amnesty groups aren’t countering Zuckerberg and his ‘Conservative Solutions’ ads detailing the goodies and privileged treatment that the legalised criminaliens (LC) will receive should this travesty become law.

* LCs aren’t required to comply with Obamacare.

* LCs won’t be deported after 2 or even 3 DUIs.

* LCs get subsidised cars, education, etc.

* LCs won’t get automatically deported if they vote in elections, even though automatic deportation is already law.

* LCs will end up getting preferential treatment in obtaining employment. As I said on another thread, who are employers going to hire: Unskilled Americans citizens, who they have to insure and pay other taxes on, or unskilled LCs, for whom they don’t?

* LCs get legalisation immediately, but the new border ‘enforcement’ provisions can be waived by Janet Napolitano and the new agents for the laughable ‘border surge’ aren’t going to be hired until 2017.

* Contrary to ChuckYou Schumer’s claim that this legislation ‘will end illegal immigration forever,’ the CBO has said that the legislation will only decrease illegal immigration by 25%.

* Contrary to claims by Rubio, McCain, etc, the CBO has found that unemployment will increase, wages & benefits will decrease, and the alleged reinforcement of entitlement programmes like Social Security and Medicare will be short-lived, if it materialises at all, and it is more likely that this law will just be another ‘Ponzi scheme on top of a Ponzi scheme.’

* ‘De facto amnesty’ is preferable to ‘de jure amnesty,’ which has been proven by the 1965 immigration law and the 1986 amnesty law.

* Amnesty will cost A MINIMUM of $6.3 trillion over the next few decades and likely much more due to education, healthcare, SS, etc. If the US follows the pattern of the UK and Europe – importing its ‘children’ because it can’t be bothered to have its own but somebody has to pay for the entitlement programmes – it will be MUCH, MUCH higher. As I have written more times than I can count, a funny thing happened to Europe on the way to its Rolls-Royce welfare hammock: The imported ‘children’ decided that the hammock looked much better than working. The US is following Europe in committing suicide by demographics.

Yeah, Bishop, I think he is really perplexed that his utopia hasn’t arrived yet. He can’t figure out why. So, he’s got to double down. Yeah, that will work!

It is rather astounding to see liberals upset about the second and third class “citizens” and our stratified society when they depend on a system of patronage and special favors.

The left doesn’t care about that as long as they’re first or being paid just because they’re be second or third.

the controversial Keystone XL pipeline unless it can first determine that it will not lead to a net increase in greenhouse gas emissions

How in the hell can a pipeline contribute to anything? It is a goddamn steel tube just sitting on or in the ground. Not unlike the damn gutters on my house.

The pipeline also uses less energy to do the job than the slob Warren Buffett’s railroad.

They’re attacking on all fronts. They want to destroy this nation in 1 generation and they are close to succeeding. Overwhelm and bankrupt the system. Cloward-Piven strategy at its worst.

This guy and his family will spend the rest of his life never having to worry about the cost of a tank of gas, the choice between food and paying the heat bills (or having no heat), being able to afford the rising costs of milk or other staples, all directly attributable to the policies he has put into play.

can_con on June 25, 2013 at 2:36 PM

Meanwhile, The One’s “science advisers’ are demanding he open another front in their war. Literally;

Daniel P. Schrag, a geochemist who is the head of Harvard University’s Center for the Environment and a member of a presidential science panel that has helped advise the White House on climate change, said he hoped the presidential speech would mark a turning point in the national debate on climate change.

“Everybody is waiting for action,” he said. “The one thing the president really needs to do now is to begin the process of shutting down the conventional coal plants. Politically, the White House is hesitant to say they’re having a war on coal. On the other hand, a war on coal is exactly what’s needed.

Don’t expect Keystone XL to be OK’d. State will no doubt have EPA come up with an excuse to stop it. At the same time, this.

No nuclear, no hydro, no oil, no coal. Only Holy Wind and Holy Sun.

In plain English, if you don’t live in a really flat part of the Sun Belt, You. Are. F**ked.

Now, tell me again how much progressives “love” humanity?

Too bad there’s no recall on the Presidency.

Well at least Warren Buffet will get another massive payday. Because now they’ll have to move all that oil by his trains.

And Barry will keep on going on his 100 million dollar vacations while we huddle in the dark.

Reason # 1 why Keystone will never be put in place while Buffet is still making money off of the alternative.

Obama’s war on energy is now moving into the coal and climate change Potemkin theaters. Expect many casualties, including the real goal, taking down the US economy.

He’s killing us and our country.

Cant wait for the fools who elected him to complain about rising prices ……. on EVERYTHING.

fogw on June 25, 2013 at 1:40 PM

Won’t matter one whit because they’ll never blame “The Won”. He’s never associated with any of this crap. Obamabots are too stupid to understand that his policies are the direct cause. They still blame Bush, the Republicans or some other convenient scapegoats that are hindering the lightbringer and keeping us from Utopia.

Oldnuke on June 25, 2013 at 2:41 PM

George W. Bush gets a large part of the blame for this. He allowed the EPA to make a finding that CO2, a gas necessary for life on this planet, is a pollutant under the Clean Air Act, and to defend it in court with bogus “science” studies. That gave Obama the legal leverage he needed to push this BS through.

Socratease on June 25, 2013 at 2:42 PM

And just so we’re clear-

those of us that pay taxes, in the net sum, will be subsidizing the higher utility costs for the disadvantaged. ‘Cuz AC be a human right.

M240H on June 25, 2013 at 2:42 PM

Rick Perry needs to ring every power plant in Texas
with the guard and tell him to shove his EPA
Mandate. Better yet. Every EPA office should be
closed and every EPA employee not allowed
on private or state property. Obama wants a war?
He will get it. The Feds be damned.

redguy on June 25, 2013 at 2:43 PM

Er, what have all these endless keystone ‘studies’ that have been done so far been looking at, if not environmental impacts and whatnot?

Can energy companies get a “Bill of Rights” so that governmental agencies can’t stonewall them for a decade on every project? Markets don’t run on “maybe.”
