Obama to pivot tomorrow to climate change, another issue voters don’t care about

posted at 7:41 pm on June 24, 2013 by Allahpundit

Never forget, “leadership” isn’t following the people where they want to go, towards an economic recovery. “Leadership” is leading the people where they need to go, towards the various wishlist items placed on Obama’s agenda by the Democratic coalition’s left-wing special interests. You want jobs and deficit reduction, but what you need is more gun control and amnesty. You unwashed dummies.

Here’s the perfect complement to Ross Douthat’s column yesterday about how often our man-of-the-people president’s priorities diverge from the people’s.

After all, gun control, immigration reform and climate change aren’t just random targets of opportunity. They’re pillars of Acela Corridor ideology, core elements of Bloombergism, places where Obama-era liberalism overlaps with the views of Davos-goers and the Wall Street 1 percent. If you move in those circles, the political circumstances don’t necessarily matter: these ideas always look like uncontroversial common sense.

Step outside those circles, though, and the timing of their elevation looks at best peculiar, at worst perverse. The president decided to make gun control legislation a major second-term priority … with firearm homicides at a 30-year low. Congress is pursuing a sharp increase in low-skilled immigration … when the foreign-born share of the American population is already headed for historical highs. The administration is drawing up major new carbon regulations … when actual existing global warming has been well below projections for 15 years and counting.

What’s more, on the issues that Americans actually prioritize — jobs, wages, the economy — it’s likely that both immigration reform and whatever the White House decides to do on greenhouse gases will make the short-term picture somewhat worse.

With gun-control momentarily off the table and amnesty headed for choppy waters in the House, it’s time to seize the day and get rolling on another top liberal priority that falls way, way down the list for everyone else in America of stuff the government should be worried about right now. Go take a look at Pew’s poll from January, flagged by Douthat himself, of America’s wishlist for policy action. What’s in the bottom five? What’s the absolute rock bottom?

The One’s approval rating today at Gallup, incidentally, is 45/49, the worst it’s been in a long time. Between today’s bipartisan amnesty debacle and the fact that Republicans somehow can’t figure out how to take advantage of him jerking around with these liberal diversions from kitchen-table issues, maybe it really is time for a third party. Exit question: Have we actually reached the point where the White House is putting out trailers for Obama’s speeches?

Climate change is a scam. But is it any surprise that Obama is pursuing this? Come on to Obama the only people that matter to him are the people that voted and donated money to his campaign. Everyone else is an “enemy,” who needs to be punished.

Since the county has just about banned wood burning stoves and dear leader is going to ban coal, how do they expect us to stay warm when the snow starts to fly in Oct? Our state is big on coal and it’s used to produce a lot of energy here. Other than that, it’s shipped to China.

But again, the main point is ABCnews is pushing the “Climate change” meme hard.

Somewhat worse? Did the author miss the Solyndra story? As soon as government subsidies are cut windmill power and solar farms will dry up and blow away.
Goverment money poured down a suck hole and the author thinks this is just a side issue which might make the short-term picture somewhat worse?

No with the global warming con game any money spent is absolutely wasted. Lets call it three percent of the GDP – absolutely irrevocably wasted, with the threat of more to come.

What does that do to an economy over time?

Subprime mortgages to indigent minorities – those are solid blue chip stocks compared to the obscene amounts of money being shat on global warming.

Obama and his ilk are conditioned to do easy things, while always avoiding difficult and challenging things.

It’s the ethos of an AA hire – and those that support it.

Power affords the ability to do what ever you want – with no recourse.

Its also way the Amazing Obama doesn’t have a clue about the IRS scandal, Benghazi, Fast and Furious, NSA, etc etc – yet “was on the call” for Seal Team 6 – and any other positive polling action.

Hard stuff is for suckers, easy stuff is for liberals.

Problems with Climate Change Models

notropis on June 24, 2013 at 8:13 PM

Even though Hans van Storch still believes in global warming. He only admits that (1) climate models may have over-predicted the effect of CO2 buildup on climate; (2) the effect of natural forces on climate has been under-estimated; (3) we should not try to prevent climate change, but adapt to it, such as building sea-dikes to protect coastal areas.

Interestingly enough, van Storch is most worried about acidification of the oceans due to CO2 absorption in them, but he also admits he doesn’t know much about it. Sea water is a highly buffered solution of many ions, and calcium ions in sea water tend to precipitate out excess carbonates, so that CO2 absorption would have little effect on ocean pH. Incidentally, the pH of sea water is higher than 8, meaning that additional CO2 in sea water would not make it acid, only slightly less alkaline.

But it is interesting that van Storch is most afraid of what he knows least about, which is what the AGW scare-mongers use against the general public. A truly educated public would NOT be afraid of “global warming” from the emission of harmless CO2 gas.

Steve Z on June 25, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Hey Barky! Did anyone ever inform you that gas-fired power plants emit half as much CO2 per megawatt as coal-fired plants? And we’ve got lots of cheap natural gas from all that fracking in PA and OH?
