Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 9:31 am on June 23, 2013 by Allahpundit

Only two dishes on the menu this morning, the NSA revelations and of course the Gang of Eight’s amnesty bill. If you want to watch Lindsey Graham warn conservatives for the thousandth time that they’ll never win another election unless they pander to Latinos by rubber-stamping whatever terrible legislation he farts out, watch “Fox News Sunday.” (Mike Lee will be on too to make the anti-amnesty case.) If you’d rather watch intelligence titans strain to be “transparent” in debating FISA and PRISM while not revealing anything classified, your best bet is NSA chief Gen. Keith Alexander on “This Week.”

Always worth noting because he’s the most unpredictable member of Congress: Rand Paul will be on CNN’s “State of the Union” to talk about whether he’s given up on the Gang of Eight, whether he agrees with Ted Cruz that we should knock out Assad’s chemical weapons in Syria and then scram, and whether he thinks Edward Snowden deserves the espionage charge he was slapped with yesterday. The full line-up is at Politico.

It’s believable that the Republican establishment and their consultants don’t like a lot of the base. They don’t like conservatives, be they Christians, be they pro-lifers or be they so-called gun nuts. But it seems almost irrational for them to also think they can blow off the base and still win at the national level.

lynncgb on June 23, 2013 at 2:42 PM

They don’t respect the base. This split goes back to Goldwater-Rockefeller in the 1960s. The Old Guard thinks conservatives are a bunch of Bible-thumping, knuckle dragging small-town rubes who would not get into the right country clubs of Ivy League schools, or understand how “politics works”.

Reagan gave the conservative right influence in the party that the old Ruling Class has always resented and wanted to take back. But they need some way to replace the votes of the conservative wing of the base.

Reagan’s choice of Bush41 as VP was supposed to join the two wings together, but it was an uneasy truce, and there were a lot of Old Republican Guard (Baker, Deaver, Skowcroft, etc., who undermined the conservatives).

Shitmer says if amnesty does not pass the smell test, mass riots will happen. Well, Shitmer, if Amnest by the gang of 8 does pass, 20 million people should descend on DC and peacefully occupy that shithole until the treasonous politicians do the following:

Enact term limits

Abolish the IRS and 2/3 of all other crap agencies like ATF, EPA,HHS,TSA,etc.

Abolish 2/3 of Useless Department Crap like Dept. of Ed., Agriculture, etc.

Cut spending by 40%

Pass balanced budget amendment

Cut Fed. workforce by 40%

Open up Gas/oil exploration in Anwar and off coasts

Kick That dictator club The United Nations out of America and quit supporting it.

Cut off all foreign aid

Close all military bases abroad unless the countries pay us the cost plus 20% for keeping us there to protect their socialist agenda while they spend their money on welfare.

And abolish public sector unions.

This will do for starters. We must make our voices heard and we need to invade peacefully and occupy DC until we get the Communists in DC under control.

Yep, the disdain being shown for the likes of Lee, Cruz, Paul etc. has just become completely obvious.
But mere common sense suggests, that if Republicans are in a hole (with Latinos) they really need to stop digging the hole deeper. Granting amnesty to tens of millions is turning the hole into a canyon.

Worth the price of admission right there.

Riots will only happen in the third world sections of big cities. Who cares?

Americans are well armed. Riots will no happen in any other area so who cares?

I’m sick of politicians pandering at the expense of the future of the country. It is beyond my comprehension that the likes of McCain, Graham, Shumer, and now Rubio, can get re-elected. The apathy of the people of this country is destroying it from within.

Gang of Eight member and South Carolina senator Lindsey Graham said Sunday that the immigration-reform bill is necessary for the GOP to “get reattached to Hispanics” and for the long-term survival of the party.

NRO

And of course, there is the “Hispanics are natural conservatives” crap again.

I watched this segment in astonishment; Miss Linsey was even weirder than normal, with his sullen face. I guess he didn’t want to start crying, so he controlled himself carefully.

As for the idiotic notion that a racial group which votes 80% leftwing is suddenly going to vote for conservatives because a bunch of liberal Republican Senators passed an amnesty bill? Why do these douchebags ignore every study which laughs at this idea?

How can they be this stupid?

Reid bought his vote with a single paragraph that converts a 3 year tourist subsidy of up to $100 million via a 2009 tourism bill for Vegas into a perpetual subsidy.

Now Heller can join Reid on the Vegas billboards touting their casino subsidies:
