Chelsea Clinton: My great-grandparents didn’t have access to Planned Parenthood’s crucial services

posted at 3:51 pm on June 21, 2013 by Allahpundit

Life News reported this earlier today and then a Twitter pal found the clip of her comments below. Skip to 19:30 or so for the key bit. Which “services” does she wish her unwed teenaged great-grandparents were able to avail themselves of? Let’s give her the benefit of the doubt and assume that she means contraception, not you know what. America’s abortion warriors can’t be so far gone that they’re now lamenting their ancestors’ inability to terminate them out of existence. Can they?

No, she means contraception. Ninety-nine percent sure. Now I’m imagining an alternate ending to “Back to the Future” in which Marty hands George a box of condoms in 1955 and promptly disappears. If M. Night Shyamalan ever remakes that movie, that’s how it’ll end. And yes, the thought of Shyamalan brutalizing a modern classic horrifies me as much as it does you.

From the stage at the recent Women Deliver conference, former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s daughter Chelsea revealed that her much-admired maternal grandmother was the child of unwed teenage parents who “did not have access to services that are so crucial that Planned Parenthood helps provide.”

Chelsea’s grandmother was born of an unintended pregnancy. And new research shows that her family is not alone in treasuring a person who – if Planned Parenthood had been successful – would not have been born.

“Every child a wanted child” is the rallying cry of family planning organizations that promote abortion as a way to achieve that goal. The New York Times Magazine recently described a study of women who were turned away from abortion clinics because their pregnancies were too far along. Researchers found that in the vast majority of cases – 95% – the mothers bonded with their babies.

Again, I’d bet she meant contraception, not abortion. A Twitter pal raises an interesting defense: Is it really so hard to reconcile principled support for easy access to contraception, which he and I both agree with, with being glad and grateful that you exist? If you go back far enough, he notes, surely all of us are the product of unplanned pregnancies — and even rape — at various points along the line. We’re all anti-rape and most of us are pro-contraception; does that mean we all somehow wish we were never born? Point taken; we’re all hypocrites to some extent in this regard. Maybe it’s just the context that makes it odd and jarring. It’s one thing to support family planning while being glad on some level that a distant ancestor couldn’t plan you into oblivion and another to pander to Planned Parenthood in the same breath that you’re talking about what an inspiration your grandmother, who otherwise wouldn’t have existed, was to you. It’s like getting your mom a Mother’s Day card that ends with “Sorry your parents didn’t have a choice whether to have you.” Um, happy Mother’s Day.

But let’s not overthink this. Chelsea’s the daughter of one Democratic president and maybe eventually of another, and rule one for prominent Democrats is to kiss the ring of PP at any opportunity — even if it means suggesting that in a perfect PP-run world your nearest and dearest might not be here. Mission accomplished.

Her comment is goofy and foolish any way you look at it. If her great grandmother used contraception or had access to abortion, her grandmother would have never been born and neither Hillary nor Chelsea would exist. That’s not the point she intends to make because she is not intelligent enough to make the connection between access to contraception/abortion and her grandmother’s existence, and therefore hers.

I think if Chelsea checked really close, no one had access to a lot of, not only what Planned Parenthood offers, but also much of the medicine available to day. Heck, in the 1930′s people died from infections because penicillin hadn’t been invented yet.

What a pile of convoluted logic this is. Wtf are you even talking about, here? Where on earth does the conclusion we wish we were never born come from? I’m against abortion under any circumstances, including rape. I’m no hypocrite. There is no reconciling to be done over those two things. My mother chose LIFE regardless of what her circumstances were.

And I’m sure to a fully indoctrinated leftist like Chelsea Clinton, abortion and other forms of birth control are synonymous. The only thing that would “force” her ancestors to become parents “against their will” would be the lack of access to an abortion.

You cite LifeNews as a source. I’d suggest you poke around a little more on their site. Easy access to contraception does NOT reduce the number of “unwanted” pregnancies. That’s a myth.

Well, if they had, maybe Mr. Rodham would have remained single, or else married some other woman and only had sons. Meaning that Bill Clinton would have married Gennifer Flowers, and his daughter would be better-looking than Chelsea.

And we would have had a different Secretary of State in 2012, who might have saved Ambssador Stevens.

Gee, Chelsea, you might be on to something there…

JannyMae on June 21, 2013 at 4:06 PM

I got into a big argument with a liberal woman one day about unwanted pregnancies and myths. Her claim was that abstinence did not prevent pregnancies. She argued it increased them because people have sex without using birth control thinking they were safe because of abstinence. She is one of the reasons I gave up even trying to have intelligent conversations with liberals. Most of their arguments are just mindlessly parroting talking point they don’t understand.

Marcola on June 21, 2013 at 4:26 PM

The corporate welfare of PP is so great?

Let’s play some math…

PP get what — $700 million a year? Remember now, PP is a private corporation and liberals hate(?) corporate welfare.

How many county clinics are out there? Let’s say 1000 nationwide.

Take the money going to PP and instead divvy it up among those 1000 clinics. Those clinics provide much more in services than PP does, being a mirror of PP and plus.

That works out to a block grant of $700,000 per clinic. Think of what each clinic can do with 700,000 more dollars!

Children (those liberals didn’t get chance to murder) being innoculated fro free. Poor women getting mammograms at age 40, when Obama now makes them wait until they’re 50 — to save government money.

Far as I’m concerned, every limousine liberal needs to live under a bridge a week out of every year, with no support from home. Let them see what life is really like out there.

ss396 on June 21, 2013 at 4:20 PM

Excellent point. I was unplanned, but certainly not unwanted!

Recall the words Ovomit used: “punished with a baby.” What abortion does away with is responsibility for one’s actions. Consequence-free promiscuity. That’s what we’ve been promoting ever since the “free love” craze of the 60′s.

What they can’t eliminate though, from the potential “punishment,” is the sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms only do so much, and birth control pills do nothing to stop the transmission of these infections, some of which are rapidly developing resistance to antibiotics. Abstinence and monogamy after marriage ARE the solutions to these problems, but God forbid we should “spoil anyone’s fun!”

JannyMae on June 21, 2013 at 4:36 PM

Cleombrotus on June 21, 2013 at 4:33 PM

Abstinence? You know, that could be taught again as a potential solution. But it does require individual responsibility and restraint. Something Liberals loathe.

My grandmother, who long ago went to her great reward, would be 123 years old this year. And she once confided in me that her three children were born at 7-year intervals because that’s the way she wanted it. She said she “used” something to prevent pregnancy. I was a young teenager, had never heard the words ‘birth control’ before and Grandma’s daughter — my mother — was also sitting at the kitchen table looking horrified so I was too embarrassed even to be hearing this and didn’t ask for details. Grandma had only a third grade education and was smarter than any of the Clintons

mountainaires on June 21, 2013 at 4:50 PM

There was another big difference for the great-grands besides access to PP “services.”

Chelsea’s great-grandparents also weren’t indoctrinated in pro-abortion politics/doublespeak. They both knew there was a human being growing inside Great Granny, and didn’t twist themselves into pretzels pretending this little person was “just a jumble of cells.”

Another thing: for Chelsea, in addition to the pill, intrauterine devices, etc – abortion, at any stage of pregnancy, IS contraception.

marybel on June 21, 2013 at 4:50 PM

Apparently her great grandmother was the town slut, because unwed teenage pregnancy in those days was incredibly rare. People (other than Chelsea’s ancestors) actually had values back then.

If her and Hillary want to exit at their own hands… as an expression of what they think grand-mama would have chosen… I will support them to their own very ends.

RalphyBoy on June 21, 2013 at 4:49 PM

Let me toss in a monkey wrench.

If you were a kid, and knew about abortion, how would you feel if you learned your mom had one or more abortions before you?

Liberals never think of these kinds of things.

Gotta be right since there’s so many refences to it everyday Liam. And good take on the introspection of not being the ‘chosen’ one.

DanMan on June 21, 2013 at 5:00 PM

It doesn’t matter if you think she means contraception and not abortion. Because you don’t get it.

Abortion is contraception to the left.

ButterflyDragon on June 21, 2013 at 4:23 PM

This is one of my key arguments to their cognitive dissonance. They wax dramatic about abortion being “safe, legal and rare” without bothering to question, if it’s safe and legal, why they should care if it’s rare. And they rend their clothes about mean Republicans not caring about rape victims or mothers in mortal danger, but they won’t take those in exchange for the 98% of people who use abortion as post-facto birth control.

But the good news: we now have Obamacare! If your pregnant pre-teen daughter likes the clandestine abortion doctor on the other side of the state line, she can keep her doctor! Huzzah! Parents legally responsible for their child’s health but having no knowledge of significant prior surgical procedures, rejoice!

My mom miscarried three times before me. It hurt my parents each time, because they wanted children.

I can’t imagine being told by my mom, “I did a few abortions. So what? I kept you, didn’t I?”

Liam on June 21, 2013 at 5:07 PM

Did she mention her great grandpa?

justltl on June 21, 2013 at 5:09 PM

I’d love to say that, for once, a Clinton and I agree on something but even I can take advantage of the epic stupidity of this person. It just shouldn’t be allowed though for girls this dumb to be put in the public eye.

Remind me, how did she get enough money to buy an apartment for $10.5 million? Her father has never had a job in his life and her mother hasn’t worked in over twenty years, so if she didn’t make the money (she obviously didn’t), and they didn’t make the money, where did it come from?

Men don’t count among liberals.

Liam on June 21, 2013 at 5:11 PM

Some people think really little before they open their mouths do they not? This only goes to show the culture of abortion has become an absolute these days. It is a religion for which reason needs not exist.

ojfltx on June 21, 2013 at 5:11 PM

Without Planned Parenthood, President George W. Bush could never have been elected president. Simple arithmetic. It demonstrates that Republicans put their principles ahead of politics.
