Quotes of the day

posted at 10:41 pm on June 20, 2013 by Allahpundit

The decision to abandon the requirement that a certain level of border security must be achieved, rather than a certain amount of resources devoted to the problem, appears to be yet another victory for the Gang of Eight immigration reform bill’s authors. Democrats on the Gang have opposed so-called “hard triggers” from the very beginning, and it appears they have defeated another attempt to put one in the bill. Whether the new increase in Border Patrol agents — another move opposed by Democrats on the Gang — will compensate for the removal of the trigger will be a key theme of the coming debate.

***

When asked by Breitbart News, … both [Corker and Hoeven] conceded that Gang of Eight members were involved in writing the measure.

“The entire ‘Gang’ has been involved–and, I might add, is still involved. All of our offices have been like switchboard operators for the last ten days and all of the ‘Gang’ has been involved and very helpful and in particular on the other side of the aisle Senator Schumer and Senator Menendez have been very active, ” Sen. Corker said.

***

Senator Schumer: (2:56 PM)

Spoke on the Hoeven/Corker border security amendment.
The border surge is breathtaking in its size and scope. It will freeway an unprecedented number of boots on the ground and drones in the air, double the size of the border patrol from its current level to over 40,000. It will finish the job of completing the fence along the entire 700-mile stretch of the southwest border. And it will enumerate on a sector-by-sector basis lists of cutting edge tools and equipment that will boost surveillance and apprehension, including surveillance and towers and drones. In other words, it calls for a breath taking show of force … It not only calls for finishing a literal fence it will create a virtual human fence of border patrol agents. Under the border surge, the border patrol will have the capacity to deploy an armed agent 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to stand guard every thousand feet all the way from San Diego, California, to Brownsville, Texas. We came you were with this idea of the border surge Wednesday morning after the CBO report was released. My colleague from Texas asked why not a week ago? We didn’t have the CBO report. We didn’t know we had the dollars. We have them now. And we still keep to our goal of not costing the treasury a nickel. The CBO report was a true game changer. It gave us the budgetary flexibility to consider massive new investments in border security that we didn’t think we could previously afford. The surge shows the commitment to border security that our colleagues have been asking for.”

***

Cruz went on to explain how the Gang of Eight bill “repeats the exact same pattern of 1986.”

“The amendment that has been proposed today does the same thing,” Cruz said. “It starts with legalization and it promises border security some time in the future. Like the famed character wimpy from Popeye, ‘I’ll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today.’”…

“Washington is very, very good at Kabuki theater,” Cruz said. “A great many things in this town are stage-managed. From the outset, in my opinion, it was clear that the managers of this bill were going to, near the end of the Senate process, allow an amendment that would at least purport to increase border security, that would be a fig leaf and allow everyone to say ‘Hosanna! Hosanna! The border has been secured! Now let’s all come on board with this gigantic bill.’”

Cruz added that “seeing an amendment today that does that is not surprise to anyone who’s been watching this process unfold.”

***

“The 90 percent is gone,” a Senate aide tells Byron York. “In its stead is the doubling of the Border Patrol,” to around 20,000 … A few points: a) This is an LBJ-style Big Liberalism solution. We’re going to throw manpower at the problem, Vietnam-style, while creating the very thing (amnesty, and the near-certainty of future amnesties) that will keep drawing desperate foreigners to keep coming. is General Westmoreland still alive to direct the effort? b) More border patrol agents will do little to stop the problem of people overstaying their visas–especially people brought into the country under the new, allegedly temporary ‘”guestworker” programs who decide to not go back home. The recent CBO report suggests this will be the biggest sluice of illegal immigrants in the future ; c) I’m not so sure of that last point, since the border itself is likely to remain pretty porous, as it is now in South Texas. Mark Krikorian notes it maytake a decade to train 20,000 new agents. Meanwhile the border fence, which unlike agents won’t require raises and pensions into eternity, can be blocked by the same forces that blocked it last time Congress promised to build it. …

But I guess the ICE union is happy!

***

The Tea Party seems to oppose the Senate Gang of Eight’s legislation with the same vehemence that it directed at the Affordable Care Act. Now, it’s important to bear in mind that generalizing about the Tea Party is incredibly fraught, given the movement’s size, amorphousness, and ideological diversity. But I asked a number of tea-party leaders if it was appropriate to say “the Tea Party opposes the Senate Gang of Eight immigration proposal,” and consistently heard that it was…

Niger Innis, who also spoke at the press conference, told reporters afterward that Senator Marco Rubio (R., Fla.) did a terrible job in the bill’s negotiations.

He got his butt handed to him, and you can put that on the record,” Innis said.

Michael Johns, who helped start the tea-party movement, told me earlier that tea-party opposition to the bill is near-universal.

***

The new epic amendment adds nothing whatsoever. It’s a painfully transparent attempt to give senators additional linguistic ammunition to fool their constituents. It’s simply more boob bait for the Bubbas.

To appreciate just how insultingly meaningless the “tough border security” amendment is, consider that it promises to build a 700 mile fence along the 1930- mile southern border—the same fence already mandated by the Secure Fence Act of 2006; the same fence which, to date, has only 36.3 miles of double-layered fencing–prompting President Obama to proclaim that border security is “now basically complete.” How many times does congress have to pass the exact same requirement before it’s actually done?

Regardless of where you stand on immigration reform, the endless and multiplying efforts of our elected representatives to hoodwink the American people should infuriate you. Senators seem utterly undeterred by the fact that trust in government today is at a nadir. They remain intent on doubling down on duplicity.

***

[S]ome of the pro-reform forces aren’t even pretending that the language in the bill is being offered in good faith.

It’s this “good faith” part which is so worrisome to anyone who like immigration in general, but is ill-at-ease with this bill. Because everywhere you look on the pro-reform side, you see people operating in what does not look like good faith at all.

Strip away all questions about policy merit and wisdom and just focus on the raw politics here for a moment. It makes you wonder how Republicans could ever get themselves suckered into voting for such a thing.

But then again, the Republican party signs on with stupid all the time.

***

“Let me be clear about one thing: America needs to secure our borders and reform our immigration laws, but immigration reform must – and I mean, must – be grounded in real border security,” Boehner, R-Ohio, said today during a news conference at the Capitol. “That’s what the American people believe, and it’s the principle that this House majority will insist upon.”…

“Regardless of what the Senate does, the House is going to work its will,” Boehner said. “The committees are doing their work. I’ve met with the Hispanic Caucus yesterday. I’ve talked to members on both sides of the aisle extensively about this issue.”

***

Speaking Wednesday night with Fox News’s Sean Hannity, Rubio said he understands why conservatives are skeptical of immigration reform.

“Look, it’s obvious I didn’t do this for political gain. This is not something that’s going to gain me any parades. People are frustrated, and I do understand it. What I hope they understand is that I studied this issue carefully for almost two years and I concluded that what we have in place right now is a disaster,” Rubio said.

***

Via the Daily Caller.

***

Sen. Rand Paul plans to support a filibuster of the Senate immigration bill unless it grants Congress more border security oversight, the Kentucky Republican said on Thursday…

Paul said he “can’t imagine” that proponents of the immigration bill will succeed in persuading him to support the final bill if more border security amendments are rejected.

Toni soprano got whacked? His dying confession must have taken three weeks to spit out.

Bless me father for I have sinned. Where do I start? Ok in ’78 I whacked 22 people. I can’t remember what we did with the bodies.

Forgive me father, that’s a lie.

Well now…”Black Hole” is pretty obviously a racist term.

Probably coined by the democRAT terror arm – the KKK – to keep recalcitrant people of color from voting Republican. As in: “You vote fer them Repubs, boy, an’ we gone put you in the black hole!”

Not to mention, of course, the obvious racism inherent in “The Black Hole of Calcutta”. A blatant slur on our esteemed trading partners from the Indian sub-continent. (Probably anti-Jindal)

And “angel food cake” is clearly a part of a plot by Evangelical Christians to disenfranchise blacks.
Don’t even start on “devil’s food cake”…which is, no doubt, a campaign of terror by witches of one sort or another.

Here’s the thing I can’t seem to grasp… First, why should a lawbreaker get amnesty or any special treatment or path to citizenship? They broke the law, ergo, when caught they should be put on a bus and shipped back to their country of origin. A second offense should mean jail time.

When I utter such things, people say, “Well, you can’t deport 11 million people”, and I say, why not? As they are caught, they get shipped out. Repeat offenders get jail. That is not to say that they can’t do it the legal way after deportation, but rewarding illegal behavior only encourages said behavior…

It isn’t a quick fix, but this problem didn’t develop overnite… Secure the border, institute e-verify, and get those union bus drivers back to work shipping these people out. It took 30 or 40 years to get here, so it might take 30 or 40 years to fix it, although if they cannot work and do not qualify for welfare and food stamps, the exodus should be much faster.

It is a giant task, but how do you eat an elephant?

One bite at a time, that’s how…

First, why should a lawbreaker get amnesty or any special treatment or path to citizenship?

PointnClick on June 21, 2013 at 4:52 AM

They shouldn’t, and even liberals know it. Which is why they ban use of the term ‘illegal alien’ and require in their polite(?) company the term ‘undocumented worker’.

Liam on June 21, 2013 at 5:01 AM

Rush was talking overtime on the immigration bill. He said he wasted his first hour talking about the Corker and Hoeven amendment. I guess he was saying it was a waste because it was doomed from the start and not worth talking about. He did go on in the second hour about the media and democrat claim that if the GOP doesn’t help pass this it’ll ruin any future they have. He pointed to 1986 and showed how after helping pass amnesty then, it actually cost republicans votes in the next election.

Does anyone see it failing the Senate or passing The House? From my limited history of following politics, seems to be headed easily through the Senate and crossing my fingers that John Boehner will kill it in The House.

How about offering the Obamacare exceptions to citizens and not illegals? Ditto other social programs. Why are the illegals unburdened for overhead when, as all the pro-reformers keep on saying, they are already ‘contributing to the economy’? If they want to stay here then they should be willing to take up the full burden and overhead of supporting the Nation they want to work in, no?

Then there is the complete absence of punishing businesses that hire illegals. What is going on with the anti-capitalist D’s that don’t want to punish these nasty corporations? I can see why the R’s are kissing butt, easily, but the D’s? Where are all the Leftists who hate US companies? Why are the employers getting a pass on being accountable from the Leftist point of view? What’s up with you true believers out there? Can’t get any vitriol for companies that actually break the law not getting massive penalties for it?

Why does it take a guy like me to propose a ‘Three Strikes and You’re Out’ concept that puts the CEOs and Board of Directors plus each individual in the hiring chain on the line for corporate misdeeds so that the Big Wigs and Fat Cats get to start paying fines and serving time for their company that they are, theoretically, accountable for? Come on, the Left should eat that up like popcorn and want to see companies and anyone who hires illegals punished until, on the third strike, the business is shut down, shuttered, and sold piecemeal at auction, stricken from all having any copyright or trademark, all intellectual property made Public Domain and all of those in charge on Strike 3 getting felony slammer time in Club Fed.

That is about as anti-corporation as you can get… unless you secretly love corporations that want to skew our immigration law to their own favor to get an under-class of workers turned into virtual slaves. Then you are just fascistic and unwilling to admit it to yourself. So how about it on the Left? An honest proposal that has extreme penalties on the corporeal part of non-corporeal citizens but also offers a death penalty for frequent abusers who can’t reform. Why does the Left, so anti-capitalist, so anti-corporation, not offer up a single shred of evidence that they are willing to walk the walk, not just talk the talk?

Heck, I’ll support you on this sort of thing: harshest and maximal penalties on corporate lawbreakers in the way of hiring illegal immigrants and fostering SSA fraud. Throw the proceeds from the auctions into the SSA kitty! There you go, instant revenue source for SSA… all you have to do is become a corporate watchdog and push for the fullest prosecutions when they are found to be hiring illegals. The Left should love doing something like this… and yet… the crickets, my friend, are blowing in the wind….

King jester, that’s not a term we want Conservatives to be using though is it? I get that it that the liberal idiots get away with what seems like murder here, but that’s a term most people wouldn’t be comfortable using when speaking to a Mexican. I don’t think that’s ban worthy, but that’s a pretty derogatory thing to say.

smoothsailing on June 21, 2013 at 5:41 AM

I think it’s going to pass the Senate unfortunately. Kirk (IL) and Heller (NV) have indicated they’re a yes and you can assume fellow traitors Hoeven and Corker are too. Throw in a few other squishy Rs, take away red state Dems Pryor and Manchin and you’re over 60 right there. Then I think what Michelle Bachmann said would happen. It’ll go to the House. They’ll have a good bill, it goes into conference with Boehner, Reid, Obama with Boehner getting to pick who goes into the conference and presto chango, the good parts are stripped out and amnesty is back in. You can’t trust Boehner as far as you throw him. Moral of the story, it’s time put extreme pressure on the House. They’re easier to scare since they’re up every 2 years.

“years” is the best answer I can give.

I used to be a frequent poster at RightNation.US years ago, and got suspended for 2 weeks during the Terry Schiavo saga, not for violating the TOS but because the site owner, Lisa, didn’t like my attitude (that place veered into capricious LGF territory after she took over.) What was especially funny about it is that 95%+ of the posters there were opposed to her stance (she took the creepy Michael Schiavo’s & the ghouls’ side.) At least I didn’t get outright banned – I don’t see how ALT’s offense, from what I know of it anyway, rises to that kind of level.

They may all be being blackmailed. It fits. Of course they could all have lost their collective minds at the same time.

Why else would they be trying to make sense out of the idea of importing an army of unskilled workers and expanding the size of the army of skilled foreign workers when we already have 25 to 30 million US citizens out of work?

Do you think it’s something in the DC water supply?

So the way to get “the mods” to surrender here is to antagonize them even further by (un)cleverly repeating over and over the derogatory term that got the original poster banned and then going “pretty please?”

Posting photos of Mussolini and his men hanging dead in Italy and then fantasizing it was Paul Ryan, Marco Rubio, Hannity and Limbaugh? Get a grip, people.

they do have discretion…”wetb@ck” is as much of a racial slur as the terribly offensive, “roast beefs,” used by the French against the Brits!

I can understand why the mods don’t like the term, but a permanent ban without a warning is overkill.

Marcus on June 21, 2013 at 8:24 AM

You have to admit, it’s pretty picayune to ban someone from the site for using a derogatory term once. If you ask me, the signal it sends is that the site isn’t interested in fostering intelligent and informative dialog as much as it is in making sure no one is offended and we all act like nice little boys and girls.

It’s not monitoring the dialog; it’s policing. It’s more offensive to me than the use of the term itself. I can read the post and draw my own conclusions about the poster, the poster’s intent, and the poster’s meaning and decide how I’m going to respond to them or to not respond, accordingly. I don’t need someone making that decision for me.

This may be, as you say, “their site” but it’s a symbiotic relationship. They need us as much as we need them; maybe more so.

If you ask me, I’d be more interested in seeing the hosts do what they can to elevate the level of dialog itself rather than the minutiae of specific words.

With the guise that this is brilliant political thought or something.

I’ve read as much of this bill (S. 744) that I’ve had time for.
Now, Mark Levin a lawyer and understands the Constitution better than most, said many sections lead to other laws that must be taken into consideration.

It was designed to be as complicated as possible, so unless one is an attorney….Obamacare?

For anyone not technologically challenged like me and does Twitter, this from NumbersUSA:

Tomorrow at 2 p.m. eastern time, NumbersUSA will join other organizations in a Stop Amnesty “Tweet Up.” The goal of the Tweet Up is to get the hashtag #StopAmnesty trending and to overwhelm Senators’ twitter accounts with tweets detailing the flaws of the amnesty bill.
We ask that at 2 p.m. Eastern time/ 1 p.m. Central time/ noon Mountain time/ 11 a.m. Pacific time, you use the hashtag #StopAmnesty and tweet messages to your Senator. We also ask that you stay engaged on Twitter and promote the message as much as you can.
Tweet yourself, retweet others, reply to naysayers, etc. – just make sure you are using #StopAmnesty!

Please pass the word.

I saw that thread you sepak of. “About posters mothers…” That wasn’t initiated by a troll. A troll was responding to the slur that was thrown their way first. Don’t throw mud and then get upset when the same mud is thrown back.

Does anyone see it failing the Senate or passing The House? From my limited history of following politics, seems to be headed easily through the Senate and crossing my fingers that John Boehner will kill it in The House.

smoothsailing on June 21, 2013 at 5:41 AM

The RINOS in the Senate are working with Schumer, Reid & the White House on this Hoeven (R-ND) & Corker (R-TN) “border security” Amendment. That was yesterday. Haven’t had time to check when it is up for a vote. They are trying their best to give cover for the R’s vote. This Amendment is words only and will never be enforced.
Posturing only for votes. Idiots that vote for it.

Boehner & his co-horts (Cantor & McCarthy) are working on their own Imm. bill with “strong” security. That’s what the Boehner office told me this past Wednesday. If they don’t do that, then I heard they will try to pass only a Border Security Bill.

I’ve been busy calling Senate & House members and trying to keep up with the latest trickery:-)

Good point.
The Left will support any action that will destroy the USA. They will get in bed with anyone who can aid in achieving that goal. They’ll cut that person’s throat later.

This mess is shaping up as the perfect storm:

-The Left wants open borders (for the USA only) to weaken the USA.
-Businessmen want porous borders as a source of cheap labor.
-Democrats want to tip voter demographics further in their favor. BTW, Texas is an affront to them as long as it is a red state.
-Liberals support it because they are basically morons. Think of them as the political version of Miss Utah and the former Miss South Carolina.
-The Media wants it since they are composed of all of the above, but primarily because their top dogs are hardcore Leftist propagandists.

bluefox on June 21, 2013 at 10:49 AM

bluefox on June 21, 2013 at 10:49 AM

We truly are the minority.

I had high hopes for Rubio. He was in an ideal position to help achieve a secure border (an obviously fundamental requirement of any sovereign nation and a concept that even liberals should be able to vaguely grasp).
Additionally he could have been instrumental in developing a rational plan for dealing with the illegal aliens currently here.
It would have been a win-win for the country and for Rubio himself.
But now, he has become the poster child for everything that we in the conservative minority know is wrong with the political elite in general and the Republican Party in particular.
Sad.

justltl on June 21, 2013 at 11:22 AM

And, of course, Rubio and the loathsome, vile, snake Chuck Schumer are, perceptually , forever joined at the hip.
The media will predictably become Rubio’s BFF if and when a sufficiently disastrous bill is passed. But, just as predictably, when his run for re-election, or, God forbid, his run for the Presidency begins, they will turn on him and, ironically, use his association with Schumer as a tool against him- think Newt Gingrich sitting on the couch beside the spawn of satan Pelosi.

See The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus for a script of Rubio’s brief political career.

I signed up for his emails some time ago as I was a huge supporter of him after reading his record.

We really need to work hard to replace those R Senator RINOS up for re-election in 2014. Had it not been for the IRS shutting the T.P. & other Conservative Organizations down, we would have made some progress in 2012.
