Quotes of the day

“I certainly wouldn’t presume to speak for Harry Reid, but I think he’s starting to get nervous,” Cruz said in an interview with conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh…

“I think he’s starting to get nervous because the American people are starting to pay attention,” he said…

“There are probably 20 Republican senators in the U.S. Senate who are on the fence, who are wobbling on this issue and not sure of how to vote,” Cruz added.

***

It was just a few months ago that Republican Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio brought the Conservative Political Action Conference crowd to its feet with back-to-back speeches that left many in the audience waxing poetic about the two freshman firebrands and their prospects in 2016.

But while Paul earned similar praise Wednesday from activists perched on the Capitol lawn for a rally against illegal immigration and the IRS, the very mention of Rubio’s name drew groans and even boos. The same Tea Party types that helped catapult Rubio into the national spotlight have now turned on him as he continues to maneuver the Senate toward a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform package…

“I still like him,” William Agliano adds. “But he’s making it tough.”

***

A lot of conservatives are upset with Marco Rubio. I can understand that. I do believe that he had the best of intentions when he started working on this issue. But I also told him during interviews early on that I do not trust Democrats like Chuck Schumer and Dick Durbin. Democrats have a history of not being trustworthy. My prediction seems to have become a reality. Democrats are basically using this as a political issue, not for the sake of solving an important problem but to boost future election chances by making this a wedge issue for 2014. The way that this is all shaping up, Democrats will be able to go out there and say that Republicans don’t like Hispanics, just like they squawk that Republicans want dirty air and water, they want to push granny off the cliff and they want poor and disabled children to fend for themselves. This is typical liberal politics at play.

Nearly every time you do business with liberals, they go back on their word.

***

“The fact is, Senator Rubio is bouncing around trying to find a path out,” a Republican staffer told the Washington Examiner. “The bill is indefensible — and he has all but admitted it by saying ‘it must be improved.’ So he saddled up with Cornyn to try to get cover — but now that doesn’t seem to be working either. Now there are more secret back room-deals being attempted — while Harry Reid and Chuck Schumer stiff-arm Senator Grassley and other Republicans who are trying to modify the bill on the floor. The American people are just waking up to the reality of another 1000 page amnesty bill — and there is a long way to go in this debate.”…

”How long have they been working on this bill?” another Republican Senate aide said. “And they are going to surprise everyone with a brand new bill just DAYS before senators vote on it, before anyone can read it, score it, evaluate it?”

***

Laura Ingraham asked Representative Paul Ryan on her radio show today why he supports immigration reform that could harm middle-class Americans. She asked him, “The CBO report says that [the Gang of Eight] approach, which would allow in all these people, would drive wages down. How can Paul Ryan, the man behind the growth agenda, say that driving American wages down is a good thing over the next twelve years, for the middle class who is struggling in Wisconsin and beyond?”

Citing a data point from the CBO’s recently released score of the Senate bill, Ingraham argued that, while the Senate proposal may be supported by the Chamber of Commerce and big businesses, it would harm wages for working-class Americans. “If the amnesty happens, those people are going to be able to compete across every job line, across every employment sector,” she said. ”How does flooding the marketplace with more laborers to compete across every workplace environment – how is that good for the American middle class?”

***

***

The bill has not primarily been sold as a deficit-reduction measure or a way to increase GNP per capita by 0.2 percent in 20 years’ time. It has been sold as a way–the only practical way–of getting illegal immigration under control. That’s what supporters are getting at when they say that the status quo is unacceptable, that it’s a de facto amnesty, and that nothing could be worse than not passing a bill. Now the CBO tells us that under the bill we will have only 25 percent less illegal immigration than it expects under current law

It is certainly open to supporters of the bill to dispute the CBO’s pessimistic projection about future illegal immigration. But if they do that, they will have to also throw out the deficit and GNP numbers they’ve been touting, since as I understand it those projections are based on the number of people that are expected to be here.

***

Chuck Schumer said recently that passage of the legislation will ensure that “Illegal immigration will be a thing of the past.” Rubio and Graham have made the same claim, repeatedly. But the CBO projects 4.8 million new illegal immigrants and their U.S.-born children will be living in the country by 2023 if the bill becomes law, compared to 6.4 million without it. (This is the 25% reduction Andrew Stiles noted below.) The report doesn’t break out the number of U.S.-born children included in that 4.8 million number, but let’s say, for round-number purposes, there would be 4 million new illegal aliens a decade from now. The report also assumes that only 8 million of the current illegals will receive amnesty, leaving 3.5 million still here illegally (if there are about 11.5 million illegals now, as is likely). Assuming further that half a million of them would die or go home over the next decade, that would seem to imply, based on CBO’s own figures, that there would be 7 million illegal aliens living here 10 years after the bill’s passage. Does that sound like illegal immigration will have become “a thing of the past”?

And if the amnesty-pushers claim the CBO is wrong about its projections of continued mass illegal immigration, then what else is it wrong about?

***

***

“This gang of 8 bill is a disaster”, Cruz began. “We’re hearing the exact same empty promises as 1986. It grants legalization now, and promises that sometime in the future, trust us *wink wink* we’ll secure the border. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice, shame in me.”

Circularly arguing with trolls is a waste of time, and I liken anyone who believes they doing some sort of public service by indulging them to people who’d believe that letting feral cats into their houses is the best way to handle them…

Anti-Control on June 20, 2013 at 12:41 PM

And there we have it! Nicely summed up in one simple paragraph!

A-C, you are always spot on!

^ 5

I rarely if ever engage the trolls here…

I see it time and time again, like RWM and others explaining things to them and it is of no value, go right over their heads…

I am positive that they sit there looking at their screens and are laughing their heads off when anyone does engage them… Yeah cynical I know, but it’s what I do when they make such utter fools of themselves (trolls)…

I will say tho that I admire the few who are willing to take them on and try to shine the Light of Truth into their dim and dismal lives…

To bluegill: For the most, I like much of what you say, but for goodness sake PLEASE get off your high horse and quit being so damned CONDESCENDING!! You rattle my cage more than anyone here, get of the Palin schtick, it’s OLD and annoying! And PLEASE stop saying ‘we and us’ it’s all YOU!! Sheesh, ok rant off…

Anti-Control on June 20, 2013 at 12:41 PM

Apparently the PTB do not agree, or they don’t care if their site is filled with posts by people arguing with trolls.

There is some justification for continually refuting the same crap over and over again — for the occasional infrequent lurkers and new readers.

Personally, I don’t bother.

Besides that, one poster’s troll is another’s “debate” opponent, and/or another’s entertainment. It is rare that everyone agrees that a particular troll is a troll, or when a troll is trolling. Some trolls do not troll all of the time.

In any event, my point was if the PTB choose to let trolls troll IMO it is their problem. On a site with a thousand or more posters there will always be many posters who at one time or another and/or for one reason or another will engage them.

Personally, I think trying to persuade people not to reply to trolls is a futile waste of time. Itself a repetitive unending circular activity. But, YMMV.

How you could get that impression out of what I’ve said is troubling…if you can’t discern the big difference between arguing in a circle with the same people endlessly, and making your points wisely & then moving on when you’re not being listened to, you are not a smart person.

People who don’t have enough sense to refrain from indulging wild animals on the wild animals’ terms are fools.

The use of “we” and “us” is used to try and fool people that don’t know the real person. bluefox on June 19, 2013 at 12:06 PM

Some of what you say may be true sometimes. However, keep in mind the purpose of a troll. It is to hi-jack the thread topic and get everyone talking about them!!

It happens here all of the time. If you want to see how a thread topic is destroyed, take a look at any Breitbart thread. A great website, but is being destroyed by the trolls.

If you missed my point in the last point, I’ll try making it easier…who’s smarter in your opinion: someone who continues to argue with those who clearly are not listening to him, or someone who decides to stop arguing to those who clearly are not listening to him?

farsighted, look at what I emphasized…to argue with trolls is to play their game – it’s like watching inept parents who argue with their own kids! Don’t try telling me that people who carry on that way really know what they are doing.

Trying to raise our fellow posters’ awareness of the folly of indulging trolls is a worthwhile usage of time; to say otherwise is to promote the idea that positive change & growth is not possible…

I agree. These trolls have been around for 2-3 years and there is no point in engaging them. A complete waste of time. This “fish” troll is a perfect example. I read a couple of the last 2-3 pages of this thread & started to see who was commenting. I don’t want to even read what the troll(s) have to say and it is a waste of time. So, I just skip the comment after seeing the name.

Every once in a while, I’ve been known to reply. Not to enlighten them, but to counter their lies. Not for anyone else’s benefit, but just to let them know their particular lie is exactly that.

Also, I don’t care that the Mods allow them. Every site has trolls.
But to engage them for 2-3 years is pointless, other than aggravating the regulars.

The trolls that use vile and vulgar language need warned once and then banned, imo tho.

haha I generally scroll right on by their posts for the most part, too – people like HondaV65, Crony Capitalist Hog Pig, libfreeliveenslavedordie, Shallow HAL…you know the type. Basically, they have nothing positive nor interesting nor constructive to say.

bluegshrill is a weird case imo. I think she is a patriot, but her nasty side, of which you know, comes out far too much of the time for me to value those rare times she is not talking crazy…I honestly believe she has a serious mental problem.

Is arbitrarily questioning someones intelligence for asking an honest question something people would consider trollish? I consider it rather boorish.

I’ll ask again. Differently. Do you only want conservatives commenting here who toe some party line in their comments?

“arbitrarily questioning”? haha you are tipping your hand completely

Because I believe the answer to your question is already sufficiently apparent, and because I find you too demanding, I don’t want to respond the way you are hoping. Also, imo, you aren’t going to trust my truthful answer anyway.

IOW, it’s not my job to get you to drink the water you are thirsting for – you can do that yourself! :)

In others words, yes. Echo chamber. You prefer to identify who is a troll. Demand who may exchange with them. Thread bully those who do with demeaning insulting comments.

I find the unanswered questions people explain away by saying “it’s apparent” or you don’t like the way it’s being asks reveals much. You also might want to consider the terse and direct manner in which you yourself address people with questions before you feign indignation again.

It was off of the HA threads for sometime recently. Now, it’s back and shazaam!! It loves Cruz and all things Conservative, LOL

Repeating words and opinions that real Conservatives have already expressed and posted.

Really? In the very next comment you post, you’re psychoanalysing bluegill, but you can’t handle a comment directed towards your admonitions to others here. You’re allowed to set the tone, define who’s a troll, who we may comment to and what’s an acceptable level of vitriol. The bottom line is you want to dish out whatever you can get away with and have zero tolerance for any in return. I’ve been nothing if not polite to you and you’ve continued to act like a abusive ass. You’re not quite as pleasant as some of the trolls you’re crying about.

The Conservatives on this site have always held and posted their conservative views. The issue is that this is something new for the ‘gill. For example, I don’t know any Conservative that approves of the NSA having access to American Citizens emails/phone calls etc. However the ‘gill upheld this program saying this:

…how did any of all this snooping help in the Fort Hood shootings?
KOOLAID2 on June 18, 2013 at 7:37 AM

What a sick comment. I expected more from someone of Koolaid’s mental acuity. So, when a terrorist succeeds in murdering and maiming, our reaction should be to get rid of those programs that have stopped similar plots but that don’t have completely perfect track records? You are sounding like the BDS sufferers of the last decade.

As I said, the ‘gill was off of the threads recently for sometime.
Then all of a sudden, it’s back and commenting like a Conservative.
Very strange. It would be like HAL turned into a Conservative, LOL

Ok, done with the ‘gill. Need to revise my calling lists for tomorrow for the Congress critters and see what other threads have going on.

The fact that you’d struggle to understand why I will not engage you the way you want when I’ve made it clear I have a low opinion of you should tell you something about yourself, but I know that it won’t! :)

I am pretty sure you fully agree with me that bluegshrill is a scold and a narcissist – I see these qualities of hers as separate from her political views, which would explain why her criticisms of Palin always sound like jealous shrieks, having nothing to do with policy, wouldn’t it? :)

Oh, I’m a troll now too? I see. Here’s the way I see it then. Consider the feeling mutual. You’re an abusive commenter who has little regard for anyone’s feelings you comment with except your click here. You cry like a big fricking baby about trolls hijacking threads and then go on three page tantrums doing the same thing yourself. You cry equally hard like a big frickng baby when you feel as though the proper level of deference hasn’t been given to your self-esteeming self. “La, la, la, I cant read your questions when you’re talking mean to me.” Then you have the nerve to call people any name in the book, question their smarts, question their sanity and even question people’s motives for being here.

I haven’t been commenting here as long as some. But I come here to exchange ideas with other Conservatives my age and get the perspective of older Conservatives. I consider it a privilege. But I hate bullies. That’s you. And I hate sterile echo chambers and that’s what you seem to want to make this place. I’m not sure who you think you are but I am sure I didn’t miss an email where they named you some kind of authority over others who comment here.

Do yourself a favor. Get off the site once and a while and get some fresh air. Go shopping. Talk to some people in real life. It’ll help you remember how to act with people here.
