Gun-control group’s list of victims of gun violence includes … Tamerlan Tsarnaev; Update: Group apologizes

posted at 12:41 pm on June 19, 2013 by Allahpundit

Wasn’t Dzhokhar also wounded by the cops at some point? He’s a victim of gun violence too, you know.

Am I awake?

The event [in Concord, New Hampshire] had people supporting the Mayors Against Illegal Guns movement, founded by New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, reading the names of those “killed with guns” since the Dec. 14 shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary outside their “No More Names” bus…

Some of the loudest shouts came when a reader spoke the name of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects who was killed by police during a gunfight.

“He’s a terrorist,” several protesters shouted.

Tamerlan himself usually avoided using guns when murdering people, of course. He blew some of them up at the marathon and allegedly slit the throats of three others a few years ago. I guess they figured he deserved mention because his hands are sort of “clean.”

Seriously, do these cretins mean to imply that cops shouldn’t have guns? Bloomberg’s police force in NYC is so heavily armed that they’re supposedly capable of shooting down a plane in a pinch. I’m guessing that means Bloomy himself is a “no” on that question, although I can’t be sure: The hypocrisy of wealthy/privileged liberals in calling for the population to be disarmed while their own security teams remain armed to the teeth is legendary. As of this writing, the Mayors Against Illegal Guns website says 6,170 Americans have been murdered by people using guns since Newtown; I can’t believe I have to ask this, but does that list include criminals — or terrorists — killed by police in an exchange of gunfire?

I can’t believe I have to ask this either but I guess I do. Was the name of Sean Collier, the MIT police officer ambushed and murdered by the Tsarnaevs because they wanted his gun, also read at the Concord rally? If not, why not?

Update: Here’s the inevitable clean-up attempt of a PR disaster. I still want to know whether Collier’s name was read.

Alex Katz, deputy communications director for the Mayors Against Illegal Guns campaign, said rally organizers relied on a list compiled by Slate.com of people killed by guns since the Dec. 14 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., “and his name was on the list.”…

Tsarnaev “was absolutely not a victim, his name should have been deleted before the list was provided to a family member for reading and his name should never have been read. It was a mistake, it should not have happened and we sincerely apologize,” Katz said.

Johnnyreb on June 19, 2013 at 12:52 PM

This is consistent with anti-gun groups, this is how they’ve always done their statistics. If a home-invader is shot by the residents, he would be counted as a victim of gun violence. Denying that guns can serve a good purpose is the first step towards gun bans and confiscation.

Socratease on June 19, 2013 at 12:53 PM

These are the very people we will have to fight (with guns probably) to save our nation. They are the brownshirts in liberal garb right now, but in the not too distant future – just watch.

That idiocy makes news – but not this:

Not all the discourse involved shouting. For several minutes, Mitch Kopacz, president of the Gun Owners of New Hampshire group, debated gun control with state Rep. Sylvia Gale, D-N.H. Neither raised their voice and they shook hands after talking, with Gale calling Kopacz “respectful.”

They’re implying if he didn’t have access to firearms, none of it would have happened.

If he didn’t have an illegal gun to begin with, he wouldn’t have been able to kill Collier.

Hey, Collier should have hugged it out or something. /

Seriously, as I posted on the other thread, I don’t know this country anymore. That a Islamic terrorist is honored by a group of elected officials out to deny American’s their civil rights is disgusting enough. But that we aren’t talking about a protest in Tehran or the Palestinian section of Israel but Concord New Hampshire makes it doubly offensive.

Especially since these same people also used the Tsarnaevs as the excuse why we needed more rigorous background checks.

Anti-Second Amendment types have always padded the numbers about gun violence with the criminals who got themselves shot. And that’s the difference: Innocent people never get themselves shot; they’re victims. Criminals are the ones who brought their own shootings on themselves.

forest on June 19, 2013 at 12:45 PM

That was the other tsarnaev. You’ll hear his name read at the “Mayors Against Illegal Cars” event. This will be a biggie. They have a scientist coming up and showing that the kinetic energy of a car is so much greater than that of a bullet (or a hundred bullets … or a thousand) that they are calling for background checks for all people who ever ride in cars – since they can easily take control of the car they’re in and have a 2000+ lb hunk of metal barreling across the ground at over 70mph, right next to so many innocent civilians or grounded terrorists.

You’ll probably also hear his name read at the forthcoming “Mayors Against Illegal Siblings” rally right after.

They do. I thunk the only thing they don’t count is an accidental discharge that doesn’t hurt anyone.

Liam on June 19, 2013 at 1:20 PM

I don’t know what they’re doing in Concord. New Hampshire has one of the lowest murder rates in the country, and you can count the gun murders per year on one hand.

And based on past statistics, around 2/3 of those gun deaths are suicides, and of the homicides, most will be with handguns used by young minority males in urban areas.

Are they going to D.C., Chicago, Detroit, LA…?

While there were about 40 No More Names supporters, there were at least 60 gun rights supporters at the rally.

The counter-protesters outnumbered the protestors? That’s rather awkward. You’d think little Mike could pay for a few busloads out of Boston.

.

Is that because the commenter claims to be a black, homosexual professor in real life???

Or is that a DIFFERENT troll?

Maybe I am confused because as long as a commenter is taking a liberal/progressive/leftist position, there is NEVER any banning by any of you.

Liberal/progressive/leftist commenters can call people names?

Liberal/progressive/leftist commenters can call slander any conservative commenter without fear of getting banned?

Liberal/progressive/leftist commenters can post flat out LIES? Endlessly? Forever?

Are those the REAL rules of Hot Air?

The Hot Air staff gets page hits from people reading our comments.

All of the regular, non-troll commenters, INCLUDING ALT, always try to do their best.

This makes the comments worth reading and generates page hits for the staff and revenue for their owner, Townhall.

I am NOT saying offensive language should be tolerated without consequences.

Suspend ALT’s account for a week. Let her cool down. BE EQUITABLE.

Especially since the Hot Air staff are complete squishes when it comes to banning Liberal/progressive/leftist commenters who post ALL KINDS of offensive statements.

Many of your regular commenters find the situation so disturbing we even try our own form of policing called TROLL-COT!

Now, when one of the people who provides consistently positive commenting has a one-off melt down, the ban hammer falls ???

My proposal is it is time for the regular commenters to engage in an act of civil disobedience.

This does NOT mean calling people names or being offensive or violating the terms of use.

It DOES mean it is time for the commenters who provide significant comment, intelligent discussion and countless links to items of significant interest to the people who can only READ Hot Air to STOP providing vaulable content to Hot Air until such time as a reasonable resolution of the ALT situation and similar situations is put in place.

Personally, I think Hot Air would benefit from a lot more direct quotes of the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, the Bible and other sources solely of interest to a CONSERVATIVE readership.

No more links to other sites.

No inclusion of other source material which improves the value of the post by a member of the Hot Air staff.
And the people who are used to reading intelligent discussions on a variety of topics?

They will get bored REAL QUICK and page hits will DROP.

Perhaps, if we can provide an economic incentive, the staff of Hot Air may decide to put more EQUITABLE effort in towards the treatment of the conservative commenters and EQUALLY enforce standards on the liberal/progressive/leftist commenters who are generally given a FREE PASS regardless of HOW OFFENSIVE their comments may be.

I randomly googled one name on the list in the website’s background, Darwin Demarcus Weathers.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – On Christmas day Taneesha Smith admitted to shooting her boyfriend, DeMarcus Weathers. Weathers died from his injuries. The incident has been ruled as “justified.”

FOX 17 was given a ten page press release regarding the details of this case.

Below is the last paragraph of the press release.

“GIVEN THE FACTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUND THE DECEMBER 25TH SHOOTING COUPLED WITH MR. WEATHERS’ HISTORY OF ABUSIVE AN ASSAULTIVE BEHAVIOR, MS. SMITH WAS NOT REQUIRED TO RETREAT AND WAS LEGALLY JUSTIFIED IN SHOOTING MR. WEATHERS. EVEN THOUGH THE DECEASED WAS NOT ARMED WITH A WEAPON AT THE TIME HE WAS SHOT, MS. SMITH WAS NONETHELESS IN REASONABLE FEAR OF DEATH OR GREAT BODILY HARM.”

The left is pro criminal. Plain and simple.

I don’t think that’s quite it. The Left feel uncomfortable judging individuals and deciding that, while this person is good, this other is bad, and assigning responsibility and consequences for their bad behavior. They’d rather organize society so that it’s not possible to be bad, or crazy, or, if someone is, they can’t harm anyone. (Including themselves.) If the entire society could be arranged like a cross between a maximum security prison, a hospital for the criminally insane, and a preschool, nobody would be able to hurt anybody else and everybody would get what they needed. That’s their conception of an ideal society.

Of course, all those restrictive rules wouldn’t apply to *them*, since they’re the smart elite and would be exempted somehow.

Rep. Won’t Say Why She Opposes 5-Month Abortion Ban Even If It ‘Saves One Life’(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Diana DeGette (D-Colo.) would not answer why she opposed a bill to ban late-term abortions after 20 weeks even if it would “save one life,” a rationale regularly used by Democrats when pushing for gun-control legislation.

Following the press conference, CNSNews.com asked DeGette, “Many Democrats, when they were arguing for gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting said even if this saves one life it will be worth doing. Why not support this bill then, if it undoubtedly will save lives of babies that have been carried throughout 5 months of pregnancy?”

DeGette said, “Well, this is, this is. … We already have laws in many states of this country. This bill is blatantly unconstitutional.”

“And, and if you look at the perceived—if you look at the stated reason of doing this legislation the Kermit Gosnell case, that gentleman was convicted of murder and sentenced to life,” DeGette said. “Any other questions?”

It’s typically padding data Ministry of Truth style. Include terrorists shot while in the commission of terrorist acts. Plus you get the total number of people shot, and, out of this number-the number of women, men, boys, girls, old people, northerners, southerners, blacks, whites, Hispanics, Aleuts, Eskimos, Asians, Polynesians and add them all together in a grand total–3 or 4 times as great as the actual number. This is why data issued by the NSA , purporting to show aborted terrorist acts are probably apocryphal. They probably include phone conversations between two neighbors discussing how to wage chemical warfare on ants and fruit flies in the garden. There is, however, one sure test to check out whether a government spokesman is lying. If you can hear the words, it’s a lie.

Oh bullshit.

In 2011 (last year of available data) there was a total of 12,664 murders in the United States. (Does not include justifiable homicides, such as police officer shootings that are cleared)

The total number of people murdered by a gun in 2011 was 8,583.

They really want us to believe that not even halfway through 2013 we’re getting ready to match 2011′s numbers? When murder rates have been dropping nearly every year?

Really?

How dishonest can they be? Someone needs to call them out on their blatant lies.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/crime/2012/12/gun_death_tally_every_american_gun_death_since_newtown_sandy_hook_shooting.html

Tamerlan is listed as a shooting death on April 19. Sean Collier is listed for April 18.

And yes, it appears the list includes people shot by police. On June 4, 2013, Highland Park, TX police shot and killed an armed man who escaped custody and tried to shoot his way out at a crowded intersection. His shooting is listed by Slate.com.

People with no shame have no shame.

LaughterJones on June 19, 2013 at 3:56 PM

And will we limit them to 10 round magazines?
Cuz, let’s face it, no Syrian rebel needs more than 3 shots to bring down a dictator, uh or deer….

Nah, they need 25 round mags…..three to bring down a dictator, 22 to fire off in the air afterwards in celebration.

hawkeye54 on June 19, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Do you really need want to ask that?

dentarthurdent on June 19, 2013 at 2:37 PM

FIFY ;) (Sort of like never asking your child “Just how big of an idiot do you think I am?”)

In other words, they got their info from within the liberal echo chamber and didn’t bother to vet it. Classic.

They also have people that have committed suicide on that list.

I guess “technically” suicide is a murder, but this is so dishonest. Inflating numbers as much as possible to incite people.

Oops! Nevermind. Blame Slate..!

Slate – Not Salon

If you follow more closely, it wasn’t Mayors Against Illegal Guns.
But to those who dud say it – yes, egregious form of idiocy.

verbaluce on June 19, 2013 at 3:01 PM

No, sir. If you use a piece of information, you are responsible for the things you say and the support you provide for it. If you use a bad source, that is a problem of your own making. If you decline to actually check the facts you use before parroting them, that is on you.

And if you see a name like Tamerlan Tsarnaev, which was in the national news for WEEKS as a terrorist bomber, and don’t think that maybe it doesn’t belong there, that is an egregious form of idiocy on YOUR part. The egregious idiots involved acknowledged as much when they issued an apology, and pointed out that they made an error in not checking the list they copied.

hawkeye54 on June 19, 2013 at 4:04 PM

Oh – OK – So if we had a habit of firing our guns up in the air just for the heck of it (liken BiteMe suggests), we could be allowed to have bigger magazines?… Right?

And I guess Obumble wasn’t talking to Syrians when he said “weapons that were designed for soldiers in war theaters don’t belong on our streets”.

dentarthurdent on June 19, 2013 at 4:30 PM

It was a mistake, it should not have happened and we sincerely apologize,” Katz said.

Because we got caught.

If the only criteria for your list are fatalities resulting from gunshot wounds Tsarnaev may belong on the list. How the list is used is the incredibly dishonest part. Now, since they admit Tarnaev is not a victim how many other names on this list are the result of justifiable homicide. Because anyone killed legally is not a victim either if they say Tsarnaev is not a victim.

verbaluce on June 19, 2013 at 3:01 PM

They are dishonestly using a list they know contains justifiable homicides.

F-U-C-K these morons.
Perhaps recall elections are in order.

Was Bin Laden on the list in 2011?
I mean he was shot at least twice.

Bubba Redneck on June 19, 2013 at 5:33 PM

I randomly googled one name on the list in the website’s background, Darwin Demarcus Weathers.

MS. SMITH WAS NONETHELESS IN REASONABLE FEAR OF DEATH OR GREAT BODILY HARM.

Buy Danish on June 19, 2013 at 1:25 PM

Classic. If she didn’t have a gun, she’d be dead. And the gun control buttsniffers lament her attacker’s untimely death.

Jaibones on June 19, 2013 at 6:36 PM

The Katz’s of the world have no day job responsibilities. They are paid professional agitators. They also have no problem finding funding because their backers are THE GOVERNMENT, or more precisely US. And against our will. We are paying into a system funding people out to wreck us.

This is an impossible mismatch until super wealthy conservatives start recruiting their own paid agitators. It’s past time. I’m ready to roll and make this my day job. Someone hire me. Come on you cheap super rich b****rds. Stop throwing at worthless politicians and fund an army of peaceful agitators.

Maybe a temporary ban would be sufficient?

I was at the counter-rally for this Bloomberg bus nonsense.
The brain-dead morons reading names dead by gunshot (notice: no separation for criminals killed while committing crimes..) included dozens – maybe HUNDREDS of – “name unknown, age unknown” deaths.

They never even paused.
Really?
Dead by gunshot without a name or age?
Clearly just padding the roster, like they did with ‘Speed Bump” Tsarnaev.

HammerNH on June 19, 2013 at 10:33 PM

Dunedainn on June 20, 2013 at 1:59 AM

The apology just puts it to a quality control issue.

So, the message is “LOOK AT THIS LIST!…I mean, sure, some of these people may have been shot by the the owner of the house during a home invasion and were known for raping and mutilating whole families…BUT JUST LOOK AT THIS LIST!!…Anyway…the main point was about senseless bloodshed, and if these people would have remained alive, would have gone on to cause some–which…come to think of it…doesn’t really help my point…yeah…so what I think I’m really saying is JUST LOOK AT THIS LIST!!
