Breaking: Deputy CIA director Mike Morell resigns; Update: Morell to join Obama’s intel advisory board

posted at 4:01 pm on June 12, 2013 by Allahpundit

The news broke within the last few minutes. If his name sounds familiar, it’s because Morell was the guy who signed off on the now infamous edit of the CIA’s Benghazi talking points that removed references to previous warnings about jihadi activity in the area. Is today’s resignation related to that, or is it related somehow to the NSA/PRISM/Snowden clusterfark?

Fox News is quoting his statement as saying “It’s time for my family,” but I can’t remotely believe this guy would quit now in the middle of a Category Five natsec hurricane knowing how suspicious it would look if he didn’t have a more compelling reason than that. Is he being squeezed out because there’s some more damning leak to come and the White House wants to get out in front of it by dispatching with the person or persons responsible?

Stand by for updates.

Update: The person set to replace Morell as deputy is — ta da — a White House lawyer who’s worked on national security issues. Is she being chosen because new CIA chief John Brennan knows/respects her from his time working with her in the WH or because O wants a tighter hold on the CIA and needs loyalists in charge there to make it happen?

Update: If O wanted a scapegoat for NSA snooping, which would be really weird given that he’s been defending the snooping himself, he’d can the NSA’s director, no? Morell seems a bit far afield to blame for that unless there’s something we don’t know.

Update: I thought he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Morell, widely admired both within the intelligence community and Capitol Hill, is a veteran of the CIA’s analytical division, rather than undercover espionage, and had worked at the agency for 33 years.

He will join the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board, the White House said.

O might want Morell out but he doesn’t want him disgruntled. An honorary position on his intel board might keep him happy, no? Then again, if Morell’s moving over to the IAB, presumably that means there’s nothing scandalous about him coming out. No point in cutting him loose from CIA to distance the White House from him if you’re going to appoint him to a presidential board instead. Maybe this really is an exceptionally ill-timed resignation for personal reasons.

Is it one of those “paid vacation” resignations?

Both, and more.

What does he mean by family? Petraeus’s family comes to mind.

Prosecute the slug. Morell should not be allowed to just walk away. He is a traitor and needs to be held responsible, along with everyone up the chain and quite a few down, too. Orange jumpsuits for all … at least until their appropriate sentences are carried out.

A few months ago I watched a speech Powerline posted given by Herb Meyer, who was an assistant to William Casey at the CIA. He told a story about how Casey once said to him that if you ever become president make sure you have your people at DOJ and CIA. Those are the places that can really get you in trouble. Reagan put two of his associates there, Casey and Meese.

Mark1971 on June 12, 2013 at 4:16 PM

Deputy Director of the CIA is NOT a minor position to be filled by someone with someone who participates in “every deputies and principals committee meeting over the past two years and chairs the Lawyer’s Group that reviews the Agency’s most sensitive programs”.

Morell may have reached his limit and told Brennan he would NOT participate in or order his people to participate in a growing cover-up.

Enter a reliable White House stooge suddenly empowered to ORDER career CIA people to toe the party line.

Dr. Frank Enstine on June 12, 2013 at 4:12 PM

Barky is not just a puppet. He has been the force behind much of the idiocy and anti-American cr@p coming from the Executive branch. Yes, he’s stupid and doesn’t understand anything, but he just doesn’t care. Barky is a slow 5 year old at the helm of a nuclear aircraft carrier, barking orders and laughing that everyone is actually doing what he says. He intended to run this ship aground from the beginning and that’s what he’s been doing. Jarrett pulls a lot of the strings for detailed stuff but Barky runs the White House. You can tell by how retarded everything that comes out of the Oval Office is. It is barky’s total lack of American sensibilities – his Indonesian, third world personality and nature, that is writ large across everything Washington has been doing since he illegitimately slimed into office.

Schadenfreude on June 12, 2013 at 4:32 PM

Forget it. What we’ve got here is an unstoppable force (Obama) meeting a moveable object (GOP).

That’s just the way it is. It’s not going to change. We haven’t the guts or will in the GOP to take the fight to the max, to the end. There will be no justice or satisfying resolution to the abomination of this presidency. We’re headed for chaos or ruin — but no neat end.

I can multi-task, thanks. Face it, Benghazi isn’t the only thing getting short shrift in scandal summer. That State Department report that came out this week with drug rings, prostitutes, and Ambassadors soliciting minors hasn’t got the attention it deserves either. I think the IRS and NSA Stasi scandals are important too since they directly relate to every American in an up-close-and-personal way. It may be the only thing that get’s through to the stupid LIVs that can’t understand why we keep talking about this Ben Ghazi guy.

You know, it might just be that Morell is innocent of any wrong-doing, but sees the coming sh!t-storm and doesn’t want to be around when it makes landfall.
As a deputy director, he’s high enough to blame for things; and low enough to be fired if the blame sticks.

I’m betting that this is a pre-emptive move toward self-preservation.
And that he’s got plenty of “insurance papers” stashed to cover his butt rather than be made a scapegoat.

Morell seems a bit far afield to blame for that unless there’s something we don’t know.

It’s the latter. I posted this morning there was “more than meets the eye” to this whole NSA thing just because of the establishment pols on both sides bending over backwards to excuse, protect and misrepresent this program to the extent it’s clear they have some vested interest in the program apart from the protection of Americans. The schizoid attempt to downplay this as old news, everybody knew about it, Bush did it, while at the same time going after the whistleblower with a ferocity to make you think he’d disclosed the Rosenberg nuclear secrets. And now a big-wig suddenly resigns and his reasons make it clear it was not a planned thing. I’m telling you this Snowden kicked over a hornets nest and we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

I label Hot Air as traitors! due to their year-long blackout on any news related to Joe Arpaio after he held his Birther press conference. Including a black-out on reporting of his health problems, the failed recall effort against him and Justice Dept dropping their civil rights case against him, and even the attempted terrorist attack against him which was also blacked out by not only Hot Air, but all Salem Comm. networks.

I call on all of Congress, the White House, the Supreme Court and all online and talk radio “Conservative” gum-flapping, schitt-scribbling posers to present themselves to Joe Arpaio, don those pink jumpsuits and submit themselves for the rest of their lives to be incarcerated in a special Supermax facility built just for treasonous worms.

Your blood pressure will suffer if you insist on keeping your real feelings pent up like that.

Did you see the part about him being the one who signed off on the scrubbing of the references to jihad in the Benghazi report? He’s not innocent. After 5 years of this administration, I don’t know if I believe anyone above mail room intern could be ‘innocent’, unless the person is deaf, dumb and blind.

Just go away. You’re not helping anything.

You know, it might just be that Morell is innocent of any wrong-doing,

The dude signed off on the CIA Benghazi talking points. The ones that started out pretty truthful and ended up with a spontaneous protest over a YouTube video after twelve versions of “the truth.”

You may be right that he’s the smart rat that makes a run for it before the main deck is awash but he’s still a guilty rat.
