CBS News: State Department covered up misconduct, interfered with IG probes

posted at 10:01 am on June 10, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

With apologies to Sheriff John* and “The Birthday Party Polka,” it’s time to sing the Scandal Song: Put another candle on the scandal cake … another week starts today.  CBS News reports that the State Department has interfered in internal investigations into criminal conduct and wrongdoing by high-ranking officials, including one ambassador who prowled public parks for prostitutes.  A very familiar name appears in this exposé, too:

CBS News has uncovered documents that show the State Department may have covered up allegations of illegal and inappropriate behavior within their ranks.

The Diplomatic Security Service, or the DSS, is the State Department’s security force, charged with protecting the secretary of state and U.S. ambassadors overseas and with investigating any cases of misconduct on the part of the 70,000 State Department employees worldwide.

CBS News’ John Miller reports that according to an internal State Department Inspector General’s memo, several recent investigations were influenced, manipulated, or simply called off. The memo obtained by CBS News cited eight specific examples. Among them: allegations that a State Department security official in Beirut “engaged in sexual assaults” on foreign nationals hired as embassy guards and the charge and that members of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s security detail “engaged prostitutes while on official trips in foreign countries” — a problem the report says was “endemic.”

And here’s a good way to exercise diplomacy in a critical theater — allow your personnel to get strung out on drugs:

The memo also reveals details about an “underground drug ring” was operating near the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and supplied State Department security contractors with drugs.

What did Foggy Botton do when the allegations came to light?  The case of the prostitute-patronizing ambassador ends up involving Patrick Kennedy, a familiar name from the Benghazi scandal and cover-up:

In one specific and striking cover-up, State Department agents told the Inspector General they were told to stop investigating the case of a U.S. Ambassador who held a sensitive diplomatic post and was suspected of patronizing prostitutes in a public park.

The State Department Inspector General’s memo refers to the 2011 investigation into an ambassador who “routinely ditched … his protective security detai” and inspectors suspect this was in order to “solicit sexual favors from prostitutes.”

Sources told CBS News that after the allegations surfaced, the ambassador was called to Washington, D.C. to meet with Undersecretary of State for Management Patrick Kennedy, but was permitted to return to his post.

Remember that State Department whistleblower Eric Nordstrom publicly rejected the Accountability Review Board on Benghazi, claiming that it purposefully pushed responsibility onto lower-level careerists, and specifically charged that the ARB was trying to protect Kennedy at a minimum.  It seems a little coincidental that Kennedy’s name pops up in another cover-up at State now. What did Kennedy do about the oversexed ambassador, especially considering the risk this created for security and for potential espionage penetration of the State Department?

Congress needs to find out who ordered the cover-ups on these investigations — and how much else might be going on at State now.

* – Sincere apologies, too; Sheriff John wouldn’t have put up with this nonsense. He’d have sat the State Department in the corner and sternly read them a safety bulletin for their own good.

There is a total breakdown of trust in the Federal Government. Any initiative or investigation becomes suspect and must be viewed with the utmost skepticism.

When a mold permeates a structure to a point beyond effective containment, the structure must be dismantled in order to eradicate it.

Doughboy on June 10, 2013 at 10:05 AM

Obama is following Alinsky to the letter

The goal is to foment enough public discontent, moral confusion, and outright chaos to spark the social upheaval that Marx, Engels, and Lenin predicted

- a revolution whose foot soldiers view the status quo as fatally flawed and wholly unworthy of salvation. Thus, the theory goes, the people will settle for nothing less than that status quo’s complete collapse

- to be followed by the erection of an entirely new system upon its ruins.

Toward that end, they will be apt to follow the lead of charismatic radical organizers who project an aura of confidence and vision, and who profess to clearly understand what types of societal “changes” are needed.

Onward to our Glorious Socialism, Comrades!

Kabul U.S. Embassy Guard: Sexual Deviancy Required for Promotion

By BRIAN ROSS (@brianross) , RHONDA SCHWARTZ (@rhondaABC) and KIRIT RADIA (@KiritRadia_ABC)
Sept. 2, 2009

Private security guards at the U.S. Embassy in Kabul were pressured to participate in naked pool parties and perform sex acts to gain promotions or assignment to preferable shifts, according to one of 12 guards who have gone public with their complaints.

In an interview with ABC News for broadcast tonight on the “World News with Charles Gibson,” the guard, a U.S. military veteran, said top supervisors of the ArmorGroup were not only aware of the “deviant sexual acts” but helped to organize them.

“It was mostly the young guys fresh from the military who were told they had to participate,” said the guard, who talked on a phone hook-up arranged by the Project on Government Oversight, which first revealed photographs of the parties.

“They were not gay but they knew what it took to get promoted,” said the guard, spoke on condition that ABC News not publish his name.

I’m glad this stuff is hitting the main-stream media, but all it proves is that reporters and producers in the alphabet networks are more in love with their own careers and advancement than anything approaching credible journalism.

As long as Obama was interesting and powerful, they burnished their careers by licking his boots. Now that he is in his second term and can’t help them as much, they are chasing scandal stories to build up their public profiles.

Imagine how many stories identical to this one never broke as long as Obama was useful to them. Nauseating . . .

Well, at least they got engaged to the prostitutes … made honest women of them – except, of course, for the many weirdos who got engaged to young boy prostitutes. They had to work quickly for the young boys, though, as they had fierce competition with the UN personnel. Those blue hats love the young kids. They refuse to get engaged to any of them, however, which is the big difference and the lefty US State Dept.

I think it all arises from lack of respect, mixed with fear. She probably commanded zero respect from the people under her, only fear — which tends to incite active, covert disrespect. Christopher Hitchens’s “No One Left to Lie To” is the definitive annihilation of the Clintons. I’m surprised either of them survived it. That Hillary Clinton — the most brazenly and hideously corrupt figure in the modern era — came to be a Senator and a Secretary of State is hard to square with any sense of hope for America.

It is possible that something else is afoot rather than a scandal-mania being pushed out by Bark’s thugs to subvert everything in the country with an avalanche.

There is a possibility that we are looking at an honest uprising by the lower-level government drones who have had their fill of being blamed for all the ills that come to light. They are also tired of watching their bosses shred the constitution and subvert the law at every turn for personal and political gain.

These whistle-blowers may have been waiting for Obama to be defeated in the last election while hoping a new POTUS might cleaned up the systemic mess. When Obama won the election some may have decided that the only hope was to expose what they could. As the first scandals emerged into light, and the administration was quick to blame the lower echelons, others at that level took note. More and more may have decided (and may be deciding now) that enough is enough.

Some may actually be “patriots”, or tea-party-advocates in deep cover. More may be gaining the courage to step forward. The present flood of leaks just might become a small tsunami.

Here’s a story for you: 2 Presidential candidates….one wins, the other takes over the State Department.

The one who was named Secretary of State presided over 20 Embassies being un-prepared & attacked on the anniversary of 9/11, ordered Marines guarding the Cairo, Egypt Embassy on the anniversary of 9/11 not to carry live ammo, the 1st Ambassador in over 30 years to be assassinated + 2 other Americans abandones while under fire, the cover up, & now this scandal that happened on her watch.

The one who became President continuously violated the Constitution, broke our laws, targeted Americans / ENEMIES by abusing the power of the govt & using federal agencies to do so, & has a list of on-going scandals (F&F, IRS, Benghazi, Spygate/Prism, Sebilius extorting ‘donations’ to illegally use to pay for Obamacare, etc) that dwarfs all the scandals perpetrated by every other President in U.S. history. Nixon was forced from office for aiding in the cover-up of Watergate…Clinton was Impeached for perjury under oath during his own Sexual Harrassment lawsuit. Obama has a ‘RAP SHEET’ longer than Abraham Lincoln’s leg…and not one American Federal Govt representative has the integrity, ethics, or testicular fortitude to even murmur the well-deserved word ‘Impeachment’!

Jeebus…wtf?

Hey lefties, where’s the Hope and Change and transparency and draining the swamp you promised us, because this isn’t it.

I get flashbacks to Animal House everytime I think about Democrats being in charge of anything.

I don’t think the picture is the Patrick Kennedy in question. I also don’t think the Patrick Kennedy in question is a relation to that Kennedy family.

Can we request a HotAir scandal tracking tool on the front page? I can’t keep up with Scandalabra and its many branches.

MTF on June 10, 2013 at 1:15 PM

Heh. Scandalabra . . . nice!

Trochilus on June 10, 2013 at 2:11 PM

It seems fishy to me that the media is suddenly “allowed” to be covering/reporting on all this. It does seem like an orchestration.

If the Alinsky theory is correct, we should be seeing a “great saviour” type figure emerging at some point. If this is a true theory, that makes Obama a dupe of the Dems. Someone to play the role of the inept “bad guy”.

Excellent casting!

Did these clowns ever think about what would happen if Madam Secretary was kidnapped?

Steve Z on June 10, 2013 at 10:53 AM

No more 3:00AM phone calls?

No more reset?

We all sleep better at night?

Hmmm……

Why do I get the feeling that those were gay prostitutes?

Blake on June 10, 2013 at 10:10 AM

I dunno, haven’t met too many prostitutes that are happy or joyous, unless they’re lucky enough to be boinking some high-paying john.

Nutstuyu on June 10, 2013 at 4:33 PM

I don’t think State was worried about espionage penetration. Is Patrick going to be the fall guy for Shrillary? Hope he knows where all the skeletons are buried and has a flash drive handy.

Kissmygrits on June 10, 2013 at 5:41 PM

I hate to say it but I’m not surprised and that is not a good thing.
What else can we really expect from the group of people who run the show.

I say, We the People say, you don’t spend one more dime on anything until you sort ALL of it out.

And there is no other answer (why now and so many scandals) then flooding the zone.

Alinskites, all of them.

Another sad day for the Union.
