Power to replace Rice at UN

posted at 8:41 am on June 5, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

With Susan Rice moving from the UN to the West Wing, the game of musical chairs needed another player, and it didn’t take long for Barack Obama to pick another insider to fill Rice’s seat.  Longtime adviser Samantha Power will replace Rice, but unlike the first move today, Power will have to face a Senate confirmation hearing, and that may prove turbulent:

It’s a good thing that Hillary Clinton has retired as Secretary of State. Power had to leave the first Obama presidential campaign after calling Hillary “a monster,” and that may have made for some awkward moments around the Foggy Bottom water cooler.

That’s not going to make much difference now, especially with a lot of open questions that will now arise  during a Senate Foreign Relations Committee confirmation hearing.  Power spent the first Obama term on his National Security Council, where she was a prime mover in the decision to intervene in Libya.  Since the White House never bothered to seek Congressional approval for that war, this will give those still angry over the violation of the War Powers Act (and Constitution) an opportunity to settle some scores. Also, the actual outcome of that intervention — a failed state, the destruction of our Benghazi assets, and the invasion of Mali by suddenly-free radical Islamist terror networks — we can expect to get a lot of questions about the kind of advice Power actually gave the White House.

However, a bigger problem than that will be Israel.  In 2002, Power told a Berkeley interviewer that she would advise a President to put together a “massive” Western military coalition to occupy Israel and the Palestinian territories in order to impose “a solution on unwilling parties.” On top of that, she told Harry Kreisler that this should be done even though it “might mean alienating a domestic constituency of tremendous political and financial import.”  That would be the Jews in America, in case the subtlety didn’t come across:

Obama keeps insisting that he’s a pro-Israel president.  Why, then, would he send Power to a body that spends an inordinate amount of its time – especially in the laughable Human Rights Council — obsessing about Israel’s supposed crimes?  This might well turn into one of the most uncomfortable confirmation hearings Obama will experience.

If Obama didn’t have that massive ego built up by years of having all his acolytes telling him his poop don’t stink, he might want to browse the internet and look at Jimmy Carter’s experience with Andrew Young as U.N. Ambassador (or more likely, he knows about it via people like Power and other Daily Kos types, and thinks Young was railroaded out of his job and that Carter should have stuck by his ambassador).

This doesn’t figure to end well for supporters of Israel, the next time a major issue in the Middle East hits the room at Turtle Bay (though I’m sure for liberal Jewish groups, no matter what the outcome, by 2016, they’ll rationalize away anything negative Power and this administration did by saying it’s OK to vote for Hillary, because she was called a “monster” by Samantha).

These “smart power” types are all over the foreign policy shop at the White House, so I guess nominating the intellectual in the group shouldn’t be a surprise. By the way, is she an American citizen? Ah well, that’s not really an issue anymore in federal jobs as we know.

This is a job requiring Senate approval. I’d expect Benghazi to take up 98% of the questioning time. She is responsible for the Middle East at National Security, she was the prime mover in the Libya “Arab spring” nonsense and she is the one advocating for weapons into Syria. She knows everything about the Benghazi timeline, unlike the SCOAMF. Remember, when the Plouffe staffer defended the President on TV a month or so ago he said specifically that while the President wasn’t in the communication stream on Benghazi, the National Security staf was,and that can only be Power.

A symptom of a leader ready to implode is that they keep giving more power to the same people who failed them in the past. Obama is going into “bunker mode”. still angry over the violation of the War Powers Act (and Constitution)

Question, if the President violated our constitution( seems easy to prove), what is the consequence of it? Is there one? If not, what incentive is there to uphold it( other than a clear moral obligation, which means little to men of low character)?

I know it’s OT, but I am genuinely curious….seems plain stupid to allow any elected official to run hog wild simply because they won a seat of power…and no one can argue( except those truly devoid of any self worth) that this admin has not done exactly that.

I love the line “We are a liberal democracy”…I am sure she has her own definition.
right2bright on June 5, 2013 at 10:23 AM

Literally she is right. At the risk of quoting Wikipedia:

Liberal democracy is a form of government in which representative democracy operates under the principles of liberalism. It is characterized by fair, free, and competitive elections between multiple distinct political parties, a separation of powers into different branches of government, the rule of law in everyday life as part of an open society, and the equal protection of human rights, civil rights, civil liberties, and political freedoms for all persons. To define the system in practice, liberal democracies often draw upon a constitution, either formally written or uncodified, to delineate the powers of government and enshrine the social contract. After a period of sustained expansion throughout the 20th century, liberal democracy became the predominant political system in the world.

Liberalism is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality.[2][3] Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but generally they support ideas such as free and fair elections, civil rights, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free trade, and private property.

Unfortunately, we have allowed so-called “liberals” to co-opt the use of the word to meen something quite different!

Honestly from a purely political point of view the GOP should let her nomination through, with a lot of fight of course, because she will ruin what little hope Obama has left. Which is why I stated, I am sure she has her own definition.

Political parties, religious entities, all use “common words”, and use them, and using their own definitions to try to create the illusion that they are thinking just like you.

One “major” influential religion in this country has built their whole doctrine on this bait and switch method of defining who they are. So they word “bait and switch” is very effective.
