Did Panetta leak classified info to Zero Dark Thirty filmmakers?

posted at 10:42 am on June 5, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

According to Politico, that’s the conclusion of an Inspector General report.  The information on the raid was classified as Secret and Top Secret, and its dissemination to the filmmakers has been a controversial point ever since the film was announced:

Former CIA Director Leon Panetta revealed the name of the Navy SEAL unit that carried out the Osama Bin Laden raid and named the unit’s ground commander at a 2011 ceremony attended by Zero Dark Thirty filmmaker Mark Boal, according to a draft Pentagon inspector general’s report obtained by a watchdog group.

Panetta also disclosed classified information designated as “top secret” and “secret” during his presentation at the CIA awards ceremony, says the draft IG report published Wednesday by the Project on Government Oversight.

The report does not make clear whether Panetta was aware that Boal was present at the ceremony, held under a tent at the CIA complex on June 24, 2011. “Approximately 1300” people from the military and the intelligence community were on hand for the event, according to a CIA press release issued the following week.

The timing of the report also sounds … very familiar:

The disclosure of the IG report could complicate the Obama administration’s claims that senior officials have not leaked classified information. Last spring, Republicans publicly attacked President Barack Obama and his top aides, alleging that the administration leaked national security secrets to burnish Obama’s standing for his re-election bid.

The release of the findings in the draft report also raises questions about why the findings have been under wraps for so long, and which of the document’s conclusions were known to White House officials prior to last November’s election.

Say, didn’t the same thing happen with the IG report at the IRS that uncovered political corruption at the agency?  Why, yes it did.  And that now raises questions about politicization not just within another agency — Defense — but also within the Inspector General corps, too.

I’d expect the House Armed Services Committee and its chair, Rep. Buck McKeon, to take an interest in these questions.  Soon.

I’m with Cruz and the “whacko birds”, it’s no longer time to be gentlemen and women when the Left is trying to carry out a coup within government.

I feel in 25 years, so much will be written about these past 8 years, it will forever be one of those “shake your head” moments. And you young guys, your kids will say “You lived through that, what was it like?”

Not unlike us older guys with Carter, unless you were actually living, and watching him in his sweater, and turning off lights at the White House, and sitting in long lines to get gas, you will never completely comprehend.

Well, after seeing one of their own get booted to the curb and called a lunatic, how else did you think they’d respond?

That was the very first scandal that was barely a blip on the radar. Gerald Walpin should have been the rallying cry for Congress to start digging, but instead Obama was given a pass.

Of course there is. We know they’ve leaned on IGs before. The Family will try to get to a special prosecutor or anyone else trying to investigate the crimes of this Regime too. They’re presently slandering Issa. If they strong-armed a SCOTUS judge into changing his vote on Obamacare, which I believe they did, there’s nothing else they won’t do.

Emasculating the IG function got the ball rolling.

The timing of this is to divert attention from the soon to be released (yet held onto report) that indicates former Sec Def Panetta leaked classified intel about the OBL raid to the makers of Zero Dark Thirty (a 10′second blurb) on Fox this morning.

NOMOBO on June 5, 2013 at 11:18 AM

But the rat-eared coward’s role as leader of SEAL Team Six had to be out there in time to get Zero Dark Thirty into the theaters in October 2012 (original release date). Classified or not, this was all political and intended to get a second term.

As for the damage the rat-eared coward did to national security…. Well, in the words of HHS Secretary Sebelius: “some people live and some people die.”

Happy Nomad on June 5, 2013 at 11:30 AM

Wasn’t Obama just yesterday strongly backing Attorney General Eric Holder’s entire justification for treating James Rosen as Public Enemy No. 1, that national security had to be protected from leaks at all costs? I guess Obama is out to disprove the old saw about a foolish consistency being the hobgoblin of small minds.

Zumkopf on June 5, 2013 at 11:31 AM

Does anyone really expect Panetta to pay the consequences for his actions? This will go nowhere, just like Fast and Furious, Benghazi, the IRS abuses, etc. etc. Congress doesn’t have the spine or the will to do much about any of these scandals except hold hearings.

patch on June 5, 2013 at 11:43 AM

You can do that. In order to have a meeting, you have to know the attendees have the requisite clearances and “need to know.” In addition, before the meeting begins, you “set the level” by announcing the clearances the attendees must have to hear what will be discussed.

There will be attendance lists and those will have been vetted by the site security office.

Suffice to say that there is a paper trail showing who admitted the filmmaker as a vistor to the the site, and therefore who’s responsible for this.

But there was an election to be won, and a football to be spiked, over and over. Who cares if names or methods of the Navy SEALS are disclosed to the public (and to our enemies) which might make their mission more dangerous next time?

The American people MUST believe Al Qaeda died when Bin Laden did. So don’t send in the military when our Ambassador is screaming for help in Benghazi–dead men tell no tales, and what difference does it make? There are more IMPORTANT things to do, like dance with the stars in Vegas!

John Kerry once leaked the identity & location of a CIA operative in the field while he read from a classified document on the floor while he tried to make some political point. This sent the CIA scrambling to pull the operative out before he was caught/killed. NOTHING WAS EVER DONE TO KERRY FOR THIS VIOLATION OF NATIONAL SECURITY!

Obama HIMSELF was leaking highly sensitive / classified information about our Intel and operational tactics, techniques, & procedures immediately after the OBL raid. Within HOURS of one of the largest, most important Intel collections in a long time (OBLs documents, files, computer records, phone/contact info) he & this information were braggin – AND THUS WARNING EVERY ISLAMIC EXTREMIST / ENEMY ON WHICH WE NOW HAD VITAL INFORMATION – about collecting all of this information. All the hideouts & locations of targtes/leaders were divulged to the world on TV, provindg the targets with the warning they needed to immediately re-locate before we could ‘prosecute’ them or exploit the information we had. Cell phone numbers we had were immediately rendered USELESS because these targets now knew they were compromised!
– Obama & this administration, to include Hillary, acted like small children who had scored their very 1st touchdown — SPIKING THAT POLITICAL FOOTBALL, as he promised he would not do. not only could he NOT WAIT to take credit for giving approval to a mission whose opportunity was begun by another President, he also could not wait to brag about what an Intell collections boon this was…again, immediately rendering it all USELESS!

Then we move on to all the other leaks being perpetrated directly from thie administration’s White House that prompted Congress to demand an investigation in the 1st place. IN ORDER TO AVOID ANOTHER SCANDAL and be seen as the source of the leaks to begin with, this administration went after a scapegoat media. (Obama’s/Holder’s targeting of the media was not only about pinning White House leaks on the press but also about intimidatig/punishing media who were covering / reporting his many, MANY scandals. faults, & failures!)

So, YES, when the White House announced it was bringing in a HOLLYWOOD FILM CREW & was going to share with them information about the raid, they were declaring to the world – this NARCISSIST was so wrapped up in getting credit for/spiking the football – that they were goig to give them CLASSIFIED INFORMATION & trusting them to modify the story enough so as not to put classified info on the screen. He was openly BRAGGING about bringing in the film crew & how he was going to give them classified info!

Over & over & over we see the gross criminal double standard of exemption from the law for Democrats/Liberals/politicians and law abiding citizens who are held to evry inch of the law.

Hero Secret Agent Valerie Plame (via oldroy at 10:54AM)
Valerie Plame the Expert analyst in the CIA claimed the LSM … yea right. My question stands Valerie, ‘What is Aerozine 50 and what is it used for?’
People, there is a distinct difference remember Some Animals are More Equal than Other Animals. Sandy Berger of Clinton fame, fills his pockets (stuffs into his shorts and socks actually) numerous CLASSIFIED documents from the National Archives and he ‘walk out with them’ and then OH MY … he says he ‘Lost them on his way home.’ His punishment? Practically none, you see he lost his clearance for 1 year.
(And Scooter Libby gets 2 years in FCI and a $250K fine for mentioning Plame when EVERYONE knows it was Richard (The Dick) Armatige who lifted the name from obscurity. Right Mr. Wilson?)
As for Sandy … Oh my, how tragic. Say, I wonder if it has been restored under Obamugabe?

No one in the DIA would be willing to give King Putt anything above a ‘Confidential’ Clearance given his history and his KNOWN associates. THAT IS FACT. And the Nation will be paying dearly for the security transgressions of this Administration for DECADES to come.
