Louisiana Democrat after calling Obamacare opponents racist: “I didn’t call anyone racist”

posted at 12:41 pm on May 31, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

The obligatory followup to Allahpundit’s post yesterday chronicling the the rhetorical misadventure of the Democratic state Sen. Karen Carter Peterson, who during a session informed her fellow legislators that — and I quote — criticisms of ObamaCare come down to “the race of this African American president.” When she was later asked to apologize for and/or defend her comments, she effectively did neither (h/t the Weekly Standard):

I’m not stepping away from anything that I said on the floor. I didn’t call anyone a racist. I referenced some of the conversations that I’d had with colleagues that, you know, shared with me that one of the factors, it’s not always the factor. I didn’t say that everybody’s decision was based on that. But certainly one of the factors was politics around it and race, the issue of race. So, that has kind of stirred up some folks that are not, I guess, accustomed to having that conversation openly but I think that it’s time that we not ignore the issue.

Er… how is it that you can at once insist that much of the opposition to ObamaCare is based on race, but that you are not not calling anybody a racist? Pretty sure that comes down to just about the same thing, whether or not she was calling anybody out specifically. And no, by the way, she did not say that racism was “one of the factors” for opposition; she actually said that race is “what it comes down to,” as if Republicans would be all too happy to blithely accept universal health care if only it were somebody else that had offered it and their objections are not in fact mainly due to the concern that a bureaucratic takeover of a gigantic sector of the economy will in the long run result in much more harm than good, o ye of little faith. (Say, where else have we heard this type of argument recently?)

Going one step further in her sorry-I’m-not-sorry, the state senator called for an apology from Governor Bobby Jindal on behalf of the people of Louisiana.

He declined.

Come on guys – she is clearly right!

The only reason conservatives oppose a government take over of healthcare is because the president is a black guy.

I mean its not like conservatives would have had an issue with a white president trying the same thing in say, uh, 1993…right?

during a session informed her fellow legislators that — and I quote — criticisms of ObamaCare come down to “the race of this African American president.”

You’ve misquoted Ms. Peterson. She clearly said “ObamaCares” not Obamacare. And yeah, she is a racist cow.

She did not cite it as one of the factors, she said specifically that the only reason why anybody was in opposition to Obamacare was because the rat-eared coward is black. She made a cute little game out of it asking why with racism as the answer. Do these people not understand just how easy it is to spread what they say through electronic media? The “I never said that” thing doesn’t work anymore.

Remember Ohio’s Issue 2 on collective bargaining? It was defeated with 63% of the vote. 81 of 88 counties voted to defeat it.

Do you know what else was on the ballot that day?

Issue 3, which was a referendum on an Ohio law that says no person in Ohio shall be compelled to purchase health insurance.

Do you know how it did?

It passed with 67% of the vote AND WON EVERY COUNTY IN THE STATE OF OHIO.

Were all of those that voted against Governor Kasich’s collective bargaining reforms and for a law against Obama’s individual mandate “WHITE, BIGOTED, CHRISTIAN, CONSERVATIVE RACISTS,” who only hate Obamacare because they “HATE THE BLACK MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE,” who signed it into law?

Do you remember Proposition C in Missouri?

The measure changed state law to bar any government entity from fining a person for failing to buy health insurance.

It passed with 71.1% of the vote.

Bear in mind that over 315,000 Democrats turned out to cast ballots in the primary that nominated Robin Carnahan, while over 577,000 Republicans hit the polls. That is about a 65/35 split — which means that a significant amount of Democrats either supported the ballot measure repudiating ObamaCare, or didn’t bother to cast a vote to defend the programme.

Were all of those Democrats that either supported the ballot measure repudiating Obamacare or couldn’t be bothered to defend it “WHITE, BIGOTED, CHRISTIAN, CONSERVATIVE RACISTS,” who only hate Obamacare because they “HATE THE BLACK MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE,” who signed it into law?

So, no progressive ever gets in high dudgeon about being called communist or fascist? Although it was progressives that started the whole “fascist” thing. Wait… maybe there’s a trend here… maybe an answer to your question….

You see, the problem we have with it is twofold: first, it’s an attempt to smear the person rather than argue the merits; second, it isn’t even given thought before being whipped out and thrown down.

Why do I resent being called a racist? Because it’s a thing we used to call “slander”. It’s a lie intended to destroy my reputation. And it’s used so that you don’t have to argue the merits of your position.

It’s the same with “fascist”. It was used solely to slander the accused as somehow associated with one of the ultimate evils of our age. And, therefore, you don’t even have to argue with them, because they are evil people and … well, you just don’t have to.

I would argue that being called a ‘fascist’ by the statists on the left is even more ironic than being called a racist by someone whose entire self-identification is wrapped up in nothing more than the color of their skin. Because 95% of the left doesn’t even understand that fascists were left-wingers.

GWB on May 31, 2013 at 1:45 PM

It’s funny that Cons need to atone for “dog-whistles” (heard by the dogs on the left), but libs never have to apologize unless they have said exactly that.

It’s like I was telling my wife last night. If the libs have been making the argument that it is just in the interest of the IRS’ duty that they make sure no Tea Party groups are gaming the system and trying to get away with it, and that any proctological questions (or requests to type War and Peace backwards in 3 different languages) are simply the result of ensuring that the rules are followed–if that is the case, what’s the problem with Congress pursuing its role of oversight to make sure that nothing else was going on. If the amount and depth of questions make for good work–what’s wrong with Congress getting answers?

And I said to her that you can occasionally find libs demanding the same Benefit of Doubt, like highway men, that they will tear up the cobblestones of Paris, to resist giving to you. When you do, you’ve found a gem forever.

But I like this comment. It should be the message of every former Democrat and/or minority running as a Republican.

The only one I remember was Barbara Jordan and she is dead now.

Although it was progressives that started the whole “fascist” thing.

GWB on May 31, 2013 at 1:45 PM

I wouldn’t exactly call Uncle Joe Stalin “fascist”. It began with Stalin, selling that the world was in conflict between Fascism and Marxism. And that the (totalitarian) strength of Russia was needed to quell fascism. Since America wasn’t Marxist, it was fascist.

It was repeated in the USA by the Communist Party, picked up by other Marx-leaning Americans and really hasn’t been unpopular since. It’s simply a false dichotomy, to put a logical term on it.

Because libs hold on to things that made them feel dynamic and alive (“involved”–that warm summer day on the campus lawn), they hold onto the anger that they felt against fascists, who are fascists by their resistance to Marxism.

It has no relation to the actual fascism, or to the relatively innocuous Italian fascism, from which it gets its name. But Marxist revolution of the soviet brand cannot expand if people cling to their nation, which is why sharing the love of one’s country with fascism is fascism. (It’s interesting because Mussolini was quite an avid Marxist, who just could never drop his pride in his country.)

It actually is “a Communist plot”.

Why do conservatives act like being called racist is the worst possible insult? Is this a worse insult than calling someone a communist? Accusing them of being traitorous or fascist? Is this worse than Limbaugh saying Christie and Obama have a master slave relationship? Why is this the red button insult for conservatives?

libfreeordie on May 31, 2013 at 1:19 PM

Why did liberals have to change their “name” to progressives?

Being called a racist isn’t the worst insult, it’s just the most common one you lefties use because it’s the default fallback card and we’re getting sick and damn tired of it, especially while Biden is on your dream-date list.

as if Republicans would be all too happy to blithely accept universal health care if only it were somebody else that had offered it

Like the Clinton Healthcare Plan of 1993, for example?

I don’t. I’ve reached the saturation point on dishonest accusations of racism, and I don’t have the time to try to sort out the legitimate ones, so I’m just tuning it out. Until liberals get a handle on race hustling, I have no choice but to dismiss nearly all accusations of racism.

Typical black, left wing liberal . . . when reason, logic, truth and common sense fail, scream racism.

rplat on May 31, 2013 at 1:10 PM

Are you claiming you’ve seen a donk use reason, truth or common sense? Video or it didn’t happen.

It doesn’t matter to me, nor does it mean anything any more.

The leftist race-relations destroyers have made a mockery of true racism. YOU lost.

Obama will have set race-relations back by at least 30 years.

To be called a “racist” is no different than calling Obama “black”.

Schadenfreude on May 31, 2013 at 2:20 PM

Obama did Nothing for blacks. The fools voted for nada.

He does well for his own. That’s about it.

Look at the stats, bef. you spew nonsense.

Schadenfreude on May 31, 2013 at 2:21 PM

“his own” meaning his family. Basta.
