Members of Congress still not ready to let go on getting the Redskins to change their name

posted at 1:21 pm on May 29, 2013 by Erika Johnsen

Because of the apparent shortage of more federal-level issues with which to occupy themselves, a handful of Congresspeople are still going strong in their quest to forcibly bring about the change they would like to see in the name of the local football team. A poll earlier this month found that just shy of 80 percent of Americans nationally approve of the Redskins’ keeping their longstanding moniker, but several lawmakers have been pursuing the aim with an especial vengeance so far this year: They already have a bill in committee that would deny the Redskins their trademark — presumably intended to wear the NFL team down by allowing other business to cut into their merch profits — and earlier this month, they delivered a piece of their minds to the brand’s various managers. From the NJ:

Those 10 members—including Congressional Native American Caucus cochairs Tom Cole and Betty McCollum—announced Tuesday they sent letters earlier this month to Redskins owner Dan Snyder, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell, and FedEx Chairman and CEO Frederick Smith pushing for a change to the team’s name.

“Native Americans throughout the country consider the term ‘redskin’ a racial, derogatory slur akin to the ‘N-word’ among African Americans or the ‘W-word’ among Latinos,” the lawmakers wrote. And their criticism is not just limited to the Washington team, but to the entire NFL: “We must also acknowledge that the NFL will never fulfill its ‘Commitment to Diversity’ as long as this racial slur remains a key component of the NFL organization.” You can read the full letter to Commissioner Goodell here. The letter to Dan Snyder is embedded below.

Dan Synder issued an all-caps proclamation that his team will NEVER change its name earlier this month, and indeed, I wouldn’t count on the Redskins folding under the various attempts to apply pressure anytime soon — but who knows how the next owner will feel about the whole thing.

One of the local high schools here has been called the Redskins since before I was born. AFAIK, no one here has ever complained about the name or insisted it be changed.

Yeah I guess, but given an overall 80% approval rating nationally for the team name, and the fact that this is driven by the most disgraceful, racist, scumbags ever put on this earth purely as a distraction from their facist progressive power grabs, shouldn’t they realize this lowlife Alinsky tactic isn’t working anymore and just leave them alone?
Guess not.

Here is the history of the Washington Redskins. They started out in Boston and wanted to use the name “Braves” which was owned by the then Boston Braves of major league baseball. Braves referred to the Sons of Liberty who dressed up as “native Americans” for the famous Boston Tea Party. The MLB Braves said no way. The original owner went with “Redskins” to honor the Patriots who dressed up as “Redskin Indians” to dump Twinnings product into the Bay. The Redskins are not named for native American but for Sam Adams and his merry band.

jerryofva on May 29, 2013 at 1:55 PM

Thank you for the history lesson, jerryofva!

Now we know the real reason that Congress is so upset about the name Redskins.

Congress wants to stamp out anything related to the Tea Party.

wren on May 29, 2013 at 4:07 PM

Snyder’s response should read: Dear Congress, this issue would fall precisely into the category of none of your damned business. I would greatly appreciate it if you will go back and review the charter of your taxpayer-funded duties (found in the Constitution), and get to it.

tech_sass on May 29, 2013 at 4:11 PM

Tom Cole is my representative and I just sent him an e-mail telling him he would never get another vote from me. I held my nose and voted for him last time, but never again. This is a ridiculous waste of our taxpayer money. I know tons of Indians who love sports and NONE of them are offended by the Redskins’ name. Heck, my wife and kids are all part Indian and this offends none of us either. Never been a big Daniel Snyder fan, but I applaud him for taking a stand on this! Been a Redskins fan since I was a little kid and I’d hate to see them be forced to change a name that isn’t even racist in the first place!

paulsur on May 29, 2013 at 2:37 PM

We agree that all terms are used to dehumanize. However only two are slurs. Only one is explosively volatile. The term fetus is a biologically accurate reference to that period of life.

Also, only scum use that particular word. You equate a biological reality with pure-hatred and vile slurs. Sad to see Hot Air dropped their bigot-filter. There could be no good reason for doing so.

We will see more of this, unfortunately.

Capitalist Hog on May 29, 2013 at 10:27 PM

According to someone up thread or the headline thread, the original owner was naming the team after the patriots of the Boston Tea Party fame.

Cindy Munford on May 29, 2013 at 10:52 PM

Cindy–according to Wikipedia-the (then) Boston Redskins owner, George Marshall, named the team after their head coach from 1933-34 William Henry “Lone Star” Dietz who is allegedly part Indian. But who knows. Wikipedia isn’t always accurate.

Fast-&-Furious, Benghazi, IRS, Media spying, FBI raiding Pro Life Orgs, poor economy, Illegal Immigration….and yet (en)forcing ‘PC’ on Pro Football teams is at or near the top of the list of issues Congress believes it needs to address?!

Speaking AS a Native American…if WE aren’t offended then pasty-faced corporate/political WHITE guys whose ancestors lied to us, killed ‘my’ people, & herded us onto the worst lands in the entire country shouldn’t have a problem with honoring us by naming a pro football team’s mascot after us.

On a humorous (& ridiculous) note, I can see how whites would be upset if a pro football team named their mascot ‘The Honkeys’, ‘The Clan’, or something like that. LOL (Relax people – it was a joke!)

easyt65 on May 30, 2013 at 8:42 AM

I used to be agnostic on this issue, but after spending 3 years working in the Dakotas I’m not so sure anymore. I think there are better names for the team. Dan Snyder’s recent outburst on the matter is also unhelpful.

Well we do have a college team already named for angry white Europeans – the Notre Dame Fighting Irish….
And I think a lot of people would like to cheer for a team like the Biloxi Rednecks…

Recall these same creeps laughed along during Obama’s first inauguration, while the preacher yammered on about “Let The Red Man get ahead, man!” and “Let The Yella be mellow!”

Good times, good times.

Christien on May 30, 2013 at 11:07 AM

Just rename the team to the Washington “Reds” and drop the Indian as a logo.

They can adopt some ambiguous crypto Marxist as the mascot.

theFantom on May 30, 2013 at 11:35 AM

The difference is that I embrace the foolish hate-filled jacka$s Congressmen who what the “Redskin” name removed, but I also embrace the “Redskin” name too.

You see I believe in inclusiveness. I believe that we must embrace all points of view, but bow to none.

Maybe the Redskins should just move to a red state where the team name would be appreciated.

We have a local high school whose team name is “Tarbabes”. Which wasn’t a big deal, until the school became predominately black and “tarbabe” was thought to be derogatory and demands were made to change the team name.

“Tarbabes” did not mean what the complainers thought it meant. Long forgotten, then brought to public attention by someone who knows local sports history, it was made known that the name was a diminutive derived from a nearby Community College’s team name of “Tartars”.

WHY WOULD ANY TEAM WANT TO BE CALLED A DEROGATORY NAME AND WHY WOULD ANY TEAM CHOOSE A MASCOT THAT WAS OFFENSIVE? Will one of these PC liberals please answer me that?

Last year, a relative of mine visited two reservations in the west and he saw many of them wearing Redskins jerseys! And several football teams on reservations use the Redskins name.

fight like a girl on May 30, 2013 at 3:26 PM

The Blue Skins.

That Smurf girl can be their mascot.

JellyToast on May 30, 2013 at 8:55 PM

Here’s my take on the situation:

1. Most polls show that the super majority (at least 75%) of Americans and Native Americans have no problem with the name “Redskins.” It is just a pesky small percentage which seem to have a problem. If it was the direct opposite, meaning most Native Americans find the term wrong/offensive, I would suggest a name change.

2. Team symbols are suppose to have a positive message. There’s no Washington Tax Evaders, Washington Delinquent Dads, or Washington Flys. They are all meant to convey something positive and noble.

3. The owner of the Redskins may come across as putting his foot down and saying no way Jose, but watch him cave under media and governmental pressure.

4. It doesn’t really matter. Sorry, but it is just the name of a football team. Changing the name doesn’t change anything about how these guys play on Sunday or ticket prices.

Frank T.J Mackey on May 30, 2013 at 11:51 PM

The stupidity is letting names effect you. Yet we are in a long war and Congress has nothing to do but try to rationalize the naming of a football team and letting Nancy’s husband be the salesman for the Post Offices’ being sold. Oh wait! There’s an election coming, make some noise, be noticed, do something.
