Quotes of the day

posted at 8:31 pm on May 18, 2013 by Allahpundit

So many people are sad about America and cynical about its government. They don’t expect anything good to happen. They think certain poisons have entered the system and nothing can be done about it. Leviathan will not be cut back or tamed, Leviathan will go on abusing the citizen. People are all too willing to believe the Internal Revenue Service is hopelessly political in its judgments and actions. They are not shocked. They don’t think anything can be done, that the system cannot be corrected. They just grip the arms of the seat and wait for the weather to get worse.

But cynicism aids and abets deterioration. You’ve got to stay shocked. It’s disrespectful not to

We are at a point now where you can make a list of things that, all combined and allowed to continue, can kill America. This is one of them. Widespread belief that the revenue-collecting arm of the US government is hopelessly corrupt is one of them.

There is such a thing as national morale. Ours could use a boost. People have grown cynical. They expect nothing good to happen. They expect it all to be swept under the rug. They expect no one to pay a price. It is a matter of profound public need that the U.S. government show and prove that it is capable of correcting itself, that Leviathan can stop itself.

Lincoln wrote that nearly any man can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man, give him power.

I think Mr. Obama has failed that test of power. From the cover-up in Benghazi to letting the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) target the Tea Party to First and Fourth Amendment violations in obtaining records from the press, Mr. Obama has shown disregard for the Bill of Rights and his responsibilities as commander in chief…

It’s as though we no longer have a Bill of Rights that guarantees American citizens the right to due process and a jury trial — and it took me 13 hours of standing and speaking to get the White House to finally, and begrudgingly, say we did. My filibuster was about drone use, but more importantly, it was about never giving government the benefit of the doubt. We cannot afford it, and the government never deserves it, as this administration continues to remind us in so many surprising and disturbing ways.

With great power comes great responsibility. The greater Mr. Obama’s power, the less responsible he becomes.

***

No one can deny that Barack Obama is a highly skilled politician, at least by the measure of election outcomes. His record is undefeated, save for an ill-advised 2000 primary challenge to an entrenched incumbent congressman. His 2008 presidential victory, after a fraction of a term in the U.S. Senate, was especially dazzling. It disproved those who said that Hillary Clinton was invincible, that a left-wing Democrat couldn’t win, and that America wasn’t ready for a black president.

No one can deny that Lance Armstrong and Mark McGwire were highly skilled athletes. But their accomplishments are forever tainted by their use of banned performance-enhancing drugs. The use of the Internal Revenue Service’s coercive power to suppress dissent against Obama is the political equivalent of steroids. The history books should record Obama’s re-election with an asterisk to indicate that it was achieved with the help of illicit means…

In his testimony to the Senate Watergate Committee–whose hearings opened 40 years ago today–John Dean famously called that scandal “a cancer on the presidency.” If Obama, his campaign or his White House aides are directly implicated in the IRS’s abuses, this will be another cancer on the presidency, remediable by resignation or impeachment.

But if the IRS acted without direction from above–if it “went rogue” against the Constitution and in support of the party in power–then we are dealing with a cancer on the federal government. That, it seems to us, is a far direr diagnosis, one whose treatment is likely to be radical and risky.

***

To a large extent the multiple crises engulfing the Obama administration are economic and informational — it’s a rebellion against the cost of lying. The sheer mendacity of key institutions has jacked up the risk premium on everything, and people instinctively know this…

The president has made it hard to do business — even for the Left. Nowhere is this more clearly illustrated than in the administration’s decision to spy on the Associated Press. That essentially cheapened the meaning of “political friend.” For if the administration could do that to its water-carriers, then what was the point of being his friend? Liberals, like anyone else, feel the pain of being stabbed in the back. It has the same effect as Obama’s assurance to allies than Iran will never get the bomb. Right, sure. Of course.

The emotional impact of Benghazi was probably this: if he could do this to Stevens and to SEALs, then he could do it to anybody.

A lying president debases his own words and undermines his own ability to hold a coalition together. Nobody completely trusts reassurances from a double-crosser. Only a fool would accept a kiss from Judas. The day comes when not even the liberals can fail to notice.

***

A civil “civil service” requires small government. Once government is ensnared in every aspect of life a bureaucracy grows increasingly capricious. The U.S. tax code ought to be an abomination to any free society, but the American people have become reconciled to it because of a complex web of so-called exemptions that massively empower the vast shadow state of the permanent bureaucracy. Under a simple tax system, your income is a legitimate tax issue. Under the IRS, everything is a legitimate tax issue: The books you read, the friends you recommend them to. There are no correct answers, only approved answers. Drew Ryun applied for permanent non-profit status for a group called “Media Trackers” in July 2011. Fifteen months later, he’d heard nothing. So he applied again under the eco-friendly name of “Greenhouse Solutions,” and was approved in three weeks.

The president and the IRS commissioner are unable to name any individual who took the decision to target only conservative groups. It just kinda sorta happened, and, once it had, it growed like Topsy. But the lady who headed that office, Sarah Hall Ingram, is now in charge of the IRS office for Obamacare. Many countries around the world have introduced government health systems since 1945, but, as I wrote here last year, “only in America does ‘health’ ‘care’ ‘reform’ begin with the hiring of 16,500 new IRS agents tasked with determining whether your insurance policy merits a fine.” So now not only are your books and Facebook posts legitimate tax issues but so is your hernia, and your prostate, and your erectile dysfunction. Next time round, the IRS will be able to leak your incontinence pads to George Soros.

Big Government is erecting a panopticon state — one that sees everything, and regulates everything. It’s great “customer service,” except that you can never get out of the store.

Krauthammer argued the IRS one is the easiest for the public to digest since it’s an agency that can do quite a bit of harm to people. And while there is no evidence yet that Obama was involved, Krauthammer predicted if it is discovered that the White House had any connection to it, it would become a “fatal problem” for the White house.

Speaking of Hussein’s corrupt tax cheating financiers not paying their fair share ,
(Via Drudge, in RED)
http://www.thesundaytimes.co.uk/sto/news/uk_news/National/article1261720.ece

A FORMER Google executive has blown the whistle on a massive and “immoral” tax avoidance scheme that has “cheated” British taxpayers out of hundreds of millions of pounds over the past decade.

Barney Jones, 34, who worked for the internet search giant between 2002 and 2006, has lifted the lid on an elaborate structure which diverts British profits through Ireland to the Bermuda tax haven.

Although Google’s London sales staff would negotiate and sign contracts with British customers, and cash was paid into a UK bank account, deals were technically booked through its Dublin office to minimise its liabilities here. Jones, a devout Christian and father of four, is ready to hand over a cache of more than 100,000 emails and documents to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC), detailing the “concocted scheme”.

Probably good advice, but sometimes difficult to follow. It’s their cowardice which galls, safely anonymous, they will spew things that they never would if face to face at a park, in a bar, at a family function.. because hate filled stupid has consequences in real life.. but not on the web..

I’ll bite though, and personally pledge to try harder, much harder to just ignore them..

Tough though.. I’m a counter puncher by nature.

mark81150 on May 19, 2013 at 5:31 AM

“The most corrosive of the controversies is what happened at the IRS, which singled out tea party and other conservative groups for special scrutiny in their applications for tax-exempt status. That Obama knew nothing about it does little to quell concerns that one of the most-feared units in government was operating out of control.” ~ Dan Balz at the Washington Post

My response at the Post:

Well written synopsis on Mr. Balz’ part with one glaring exception/assumption on his part—”That Obama knew nothing about it”. Unless Mr. Balz is a mind-reader, this is a bold statement not supported by any facts, and based on the obvious denials from the administration. Hard to believe (in totality) that even when Democratic leaders were calling for IRS investigations into conservative organizations, that Obama “knew nothing”. In fact, with all the controversial (and possible illegal actions in several departments), it’s utterly amazing how many of them, (department heads) claim to know absolutely NOTHING about what’s going on right under their noses. If President Obama has chosen to “look the other way” to insure plausible deniability, Mr. Balz could have phrased the statement “That Mr. Obama claims to know nothing”, which would be factually correct. Big difference than what Mr. Balz has assumed to be a fact.

Rovin on May 19, 2013 at 6:13 AM

Probably good advice, but sometimes difficult to follow.

I am of the position that this kind of exercise is truly only as difficult as a person thinks it is. I will also throw out, “practice makes perfect.”

It’s their cowardice which galls, safely anonymous, they will spew things that they never would if face to face at a park, in a bar, at a family function.. because hate filled stupid has consequences in real life.. but not on the web..

I’ll bite though, and personally pledge to try harder, much harder to just ignore them..

mark81150 on May 19, 2013 at 5:31 AM

I understand what you are saying, and I hope you know that I am not personally attacking people like you – I’m just constructively reminding you how utterly stupid and childish the leftards on the other ends of these conversations are, and how non-seriously their baiting insults should be taken. :)

Oblivious morons like HAL are the equivalent of attention-starved drug addicts who are abusively in denial, and indulging their asininity wastes the time of all involved parties. Circular, pointless bickering with them only ends up getting ourselves dirty when there is no good reason for us to allow that to happen.

Since you are a counterpuncher who might appreciate this, to grasp my idea of what to and what not to do counterpunching-wise with ever-sucking blackholish trolls like HAL, look at fellow counterpuncher Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s fight vs Cotto and compare it stylistically to his more recent fight with Guerrero. Against Cotto, he failed to properly utilize his superior defensive talent/advantage, and ended up getting tagged far too much. As a smart boxer, he realized this mistake before he fought Guerrero, and masterfully corrected the error.

Anti-Control on May 19, 2013 at 6:29 AM

Yes I do. No biz owner with a brain starts a company simply to create jobs. They start companies to benefit themselves and their shareholders. Hiring is a necessary evil.

HotAirLib on May 18, 2013 at 9:41 PM

And who do you think those shareholders are? If you say “rich evil conservatives”, you be wrong. A very large number of PENSIONS are invested in the oil industry because its a good stable, long-term investment… perfect for pension funds. But what I want to know is why you hate retired teachers, firefighters and police? Why should government bureaucrats get that “fair share” tax money instead of retirees who worked hard all their lives serving others? Why do you worship government, and hate hard workers?

Also, oil companies pay far higher percentages in taxes than other companies. If you want fair, then what you want is a flat tax system where everyone pays the same percent. But I suspect what you really want is more tax UN-fairness.

dominigan on May 19, 2013 at 7:19 AM

It’s the machine behind Obama that’s well oiled and clever not Obama. He is not an elite politician but a bumbling puppet. He is not clever without his prompter so who do you credit now, him or the people that program the prompter? Articles like this are an insult to the intelligence of most people praising the narcissist who credits himself with intelligence and is deaf to anyone not in agreement with him.

Wise Mr. AC. Nice boxing illustration.

HAL is one troll that I find easy to ignore.
Why? His motives are obvious..just hate filled
bombs he throws and watches the reactions in delight. I want to derive him of any pleasure he
may receive.
Pulling a rogerb- using his own words against him and a mock or a few is enough. Then I flush him.
He craves a fight and attention, simply for his own satisfaction and he usually gets it.
Just picture him behind his keyboard laughing…
that should help.

He has been on a frenzy for weeks…
Hmmm..timing..right when we had scandal after scandal breaking. Desperate.
He usually gets the thread derailed and he moves away from the topic. He also-if anyone has missed it..likes to post to posters here about their mom’s giving blow jobs and your trailer trash daughters doing the same.
Dudes a perv. He knows that will rile you up more then anything. But..many bite.
KA2 just mocks him-then casts him aside.

His sole purpose of being here is to inflame. Nothing more.

My 2 cents.
The best way to manage him? contain him.
Dude’s a lying, perv, pyscho- Time to quit feeding him. Wanna pi$$ him off? Ignore him.
He ain’t worth a shite or the time used on back and forths with him. Time is better spent with HAL blocker. Trust me. :)

Chicks? lol
Sorry..Sparky has ruined me.

Eh, space stuff is okay..
while I appreciate your links..
it just doesn’t get me excited.
Don’t know why.
I watched the shuttle go up a million times here..
right in my back yard..
Rocket went up the other day. It’s cool
but I just never got into it.
I did love my telescope and looking at the stars, planets, system…fascinating.
You know I am a odd ball ding bat. :)

I love Ships, subs, anything ocean related..my passion I guess.

And you didn’t look closely at that second link.

Though his link is broken, I keep my new website pretty well hidden.

Give me a break..I just woke up and I am blond. :)
Until I ingest more caffeine..”my look closely” function is a bit off, my little kozmonot.

Eh, daughter is giving a speech at church, so I’m makin’ my biannual visit to Sunday service.

Enjoy me while you have me.

Since it appears we are the only two here.

Just got it up a while back and only the first page is live.

Really? That is odd. All the juicy stuff disappeared then..

That would be me.

“Since it appears we are the only two here.”
Cool, thanks for sharing. I understand the oz more now. I see your passion and why.
I recall our morning talk a couple months back..you were making molds.

Its a very progressive church. One that this deist can tolerate, as long as they don’t expect me to sing.

Now if there was a way to kill that link.

Its a good thing the third page isn’t live. More than a dozen Trek kits there. And more on the way.

The Trek stuff alone pays for my evening hobby.
