Video: IRS scapegoats not exactly taking it lying down

posted at 8:01 am on May 16, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

Last night, Barack Obama tried to take control of the narrative on one of the scandals that have rocked his administration by announcing that IRS Commissioner Steve Miller had resigned by request of Treasury Secretary Jack Lew.  As it turns out, Miller was leaving in a month anyway, but the outgoing IRS chief took the time to note that the wrongdoing was limited to two IRS employees in the Cincinnati office, who had already been “disciplined” — which directly contradicts the Inspector General’s report, which shows managerial involvement since March 2010 at least, and coordination between multiple offices and units.  The report also notes that at least 300 applications got improperly obstructed, and the number is likely much higher than that.

Fox 19 in Cincinnati reports that the number doubled yesterday evening to four IRS employees, and that they’re not terribly interested in martyrdom (via Twitchy):

FOX19 has exclusively learned that as many as four people may be the first Cincinnati Internal Revenue Service (IRS) employees to face disciplinary action, and possibly even criminal charges, for allegedly targeting Tea Party and Liberty groups applying for non-profit status.

On Wednesday, the IRS announced that it had pinpointed two employees at the agency’s Cincinnati office for being ‘primarily’ responsible. …

One of FOX19′s two sources went on say that these four IRS workers claim “they simply did what their bosses ordered.” FOX19 reported on Tuesday that the report by the Office of Inspector General states that senior IRS officials knew agents were targeting Tea Party groups as early as 2011.

In fact, according to that report, Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS division that oversees tax exempt organizations, was told on June 29, 2011 that groups with ‘Tea Party’, ‘Patriot’ or ’9/12 Project’ in their names were being flagged for additional, and often burdensome, scrutiny.

Did I say 300 organizations? According to the report, Reps. Jim Jordan and Darrell Issa now put that number closer to 500.  If it was just these four agents, they’d have to have been rather, er, productive.  Besides, if it was just four agents in one office, Lerner wouldn’t have spent two years trying to massage the process to make it look less partisan — she would have told the four to knock it off in 2011, and the IRS chief counsel would have insisted on it when notified in August 2011.

Why might Lerner have been motivated to let the harassment continue? Maybe the connections at her husband’s law firm might provide an answer:

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) official who apologized for targeting conservative nonprofit groups for extra scrutiny is married to an attorney whose firm hosted a voter registration organizing event for the 2012 Obama re-election campaign, praised President Obama’s policy work, and had one of its partners appointed by Obama to a key ambassadorship.

IRS Exempt Organizations Division director Lois G. Lerner, who has been described as “apolitical” in mainstream press coverage of the IRS scandal, is married to tax attorney Michael R. Miles, a partner at the law firm Sutherland Asbill & Brennan. The firm is based in Atlanta but has a number of offices including in Washington, D.C., where Miles works.

The 400-attorney firm hosted an organizing meeting at its Atlanta office for people interested in helping with voter registration for the Obama re-election campaign.

This is not the first of Lerner’s connections to the president to surface. Earlier this week The Daily Caller reported that Lerner personally signed the tax-exemption approval for a shady charity run by Obama’s half-brother, after an inexplicably brief one-month application process.

The reason Miller claimed that the two-maybe-four employees had already been disciplined was to head off potential criminal charges.  That step would get them talking about who ordered the targeting of conservative groups.  Two of the employees in that office — who may or may not be among that supposedly rogue group — will testify to Congress on Monday, and that may give us a more credible account than two IRS agents wreaking havoc for three years — with management aware of the problem for two of those years — without being reined in until after the election.

Obama picks Eric Holder as his A.G., despits:

- Holder helping obtain pardons for Mark Rich & the terrorist group FALN (& hiding documents during that process)…
- Holder encouraging/working for clemency for members of the Weatherman Underground, caught transporting 740 lbs of TNT to use in their bombings/terrorist attacks
- Holder’s law firm representing John Corzine, MF Global chairman who ripped off $1.5 billion from investors & escaped ALL punishment
- Who was part of the Elian Gonzales incident in which armed personnel barged into a civilian house, took him from the home, & sent him back to Cuba at gun-point

And anyone is surprised this man is in the center of all this scandal, perpetrated 3 Felony Counts of Perjury before Congress, & is the 1st AG in US History to ever be Censured?!

Or how about this – is anyone surprised about this ISR scandal when Obama’s hand-picked Sect of the Treasury was/is a TAX CHEAT?

Holder’s somewhat-blackness trumped all of that.

We need ONE low level employee with a spine and perhaps a desire to write a book, script a movie, make big bucks on talk show circuit, etc…if you know what I mean.

What major publisher (lefties) will offer him a book deal? What writer (lefties) will write the Hollywood (lefties) script? What daytime talk show (lefties) host (lefties) will want to interview him?

Nothing in this country changes until the federal bureaucracy is purged of leftist along with the media and higher education.

cool, so the chit is flowing uphill, as it should.

However, as we all know, the targeting and hatred of conservative groups is endemic throughout all of these huge bloated government agencies. The Tea Party presents a threat to them keeping their cushy jobs.

“ER – Press Secretary Jay Carney defended the Obama administration as it faces scrutiny for the IRS’s targeting of conservative groups. Today on The Five, Eric Bolling voiced his concern, saying, “2011, I was pretty vocal against four more years of President Obama. […] I don’t know if it’s coincidence or not but I did get an IRS audit in 2012 for my 2011 tax returns. I’m not sure if there’s any correlation.”

Andrea Tantaros commented, “It’s the Chicago way. [Obama] said he would change D.C. and the way they do business. Boy, has he ever.”

Busted!… Conservative Group Changes Name to “Greenhouse Solutions” – Granted Nonprofit Status in 3 Weeks

“In 2011 Conservative watchdog group Media Trackers filed with the IRS to achieve nonprofit status. The application got stuck in Obama-induced IRS limbo. In 2012 the same group changed its name and filed again with the IRS as “Greenhouse Solutions.” They were granted nonprofit status in 3 weeks….”

“The Thomas Moore Society, a public interest law firm announced that one of their clients was told that their approval as a non-profit was conditioned on a commitment not to protest outside Planned Parenthood abortion clinics.

In a phone call to Coalition for Life of Iowa leaders on June 6, 2009, the IRS agent “Ms. Richards” told the group to send a letter to the IRS with the entire board’s signatures stating that, under perjury of the law, they do not picket/protest or organize groups to picket or protest outside of Planned Parenthood. Once the IRS received this letter, their application would be approved. After a series of letters following a request for more invasive information, Thomas More Society special counsel Sally Wagenmaker sent a letter to the IRS demanding the tax exempt status be issued immediately.

There is obviously no prohibition on any organization conducting a peaceful protest. Such activity does not violate any rules governing non-profits. It is protected in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.

The initial reports of the IRS targeting conservative organizations were troubling. The IRS singled out groups with “tea party” or “patriot” in their name and blanketed them with invasive and, in many cases, impermissible questions. While many organizations abandoned their application for tax-exempt status, many more answered the IRS’s questions, only to see their applications languish.

The alleged actions against the pro-life organization, however, are an order of magnitude more serious. If the allegations are true, the IRS used a specific political litmus test to approve non-profit status. It also conditioned approval on actions related to a specific, political organization. It effectively allowed Planned Parenthood to silence political opposition…”

The reason Miller claimed that the two-maybe-four employees had already been disciplined was to head off potential criminal charges. That step would get them talking about who ordered the targeting of conservative groups.

No. The reason these “two-maybe-four employees” were “disciplined” instead of fired is because these 2-4 employees have the ability to burn the whole house down. They can’t just fire these people: unlike the circle of Lefty apparatchiks that Obama-Holder hob-knob with – who have a new job with some other Lefty-run outfit before they can clean their desks out after getting caught in some scandal – these are regular people, who most likely live paycheck-to-paycheck. If they truly just fire them, leaving them without a job and on their own in finding a new, they will be screaming to tell everything they know to Congress.

Obama-Holder are stalling to buy time, so that they can figure out a way to bribe these people without a money trail that leads back to them. I guarantee you that there are discussions going on right now about lining up new jobs for these people…jobs that will start a few months down the road, so as not to raise any eyebrows. And of course, hand-in-hand with those discussions will be talks about under-the-table ways to get cash into their pockets for a few months until those jobs start.

The GOP needs to do the same thing with this group that prosecutors do with drug-dealers – that is, “If you don’t give up those above you who ordered you to do this, we will ensure that you are prosecuted to the full extent the law allows.”

This maybe the first time since 1776 that we have seen a power based government in full retreat.
1. What has caused it?
2. Up coming 2014 mid term election?
3. Picked on the press?
4. All to many scandals?
5. The bloggers?
Don’t know. Don’t really care. It is a good thing that it is occurring.
I’ve been at this fighting the “Big Gov.” for over 50 years now. Some times with some degree of success.
WARRINGS:
1. THE POWERS will try to keep the scandals separate. this keeps the interest in any one scandal to a below 50% in the public polls. That way they can say “What Difference Does It Make” no one really cares. This also closes the issue that when all the dots are connected, point to the First Tuesday in November 2012.
2. THE POWERES will next change from the “Defend” mode to the “Discovery” mode. This is an attempt to show “How can we be the bad guys if we find the problems”.
3. THE POWERS will put out so many minor controversies as to cloud the real issues.

Now the big concerns. The government often works in “Mysterious Ways” that we some times find difficult to understand and may seem like a scandal but in reality is a government working as it should. If we jump on every controversy then the “THE POWERS” will just stand by and hand out tin foil hats at a major rate and will be able to get away with all of this.

To win back our government we need to stand the line on real scandals, the ones that matter and go for the truth. Not allowing the momentum to be diluted with trivia.

You would have thought that Miller would at least have read, and perhaps understood, what his own IG was saying about his organization.
