Rubio: Obama “doesn’t have clean hands” in IRS scandal

posted at 12:41 pm on May 16, 2013 by Ed Morrissey

But – but – but – he fired a guy who was leaving next month anyway! Shouldn’t that count for something? Apparently not with Marco Rubio, who offered a few dot connections on Fox News this morning between the IRS and AP scandals — and hinted that more may be coming in the former:

“The president doesn’t have clean hands in this,” Marco Rubio said this morning of the IRS scandal. ”This organization of his, this administration has created a culture of intimidation.”

The Florida senator pointed to the tone president has set throughout his administration as the root of the IRS scandal. “It’s his campaign, it’s his White House, it’s basically an attempt to muscle anyone who is their political opponent, and to use whatever power they have at their disposal to intimidate people who they don’t agree with,” he explained.

Rubio’s right that one of the linking themes between the two scandals is intimidation.  In the IRS case, it’s explicit; in the AP scandal, it’s a little more subtle, mainly because the AP didn’t even realize that the Obama administration had raided its phone records for a while after it happened.  However, the consequence of that seizure and especially its ridiculously broad scope was to tell potential sources on government misconduct that a reporter’s pledge for anonymity essentially means squat.

Rubio also told Chuck Todd on MSNBC that one resignation won’t be enough, and again connected the dots to Obama’s culture of intimidation:

First of all, I think the resignation is appropriate. I called for that on Monday, but it is just the beginning. It’s not nearly enough. I think there should be prosecutions of individuals that were responsible here in abusing their power. I also think it’s important for the president to be honest about the culture of intimidation that his administration has created here. This is a president that as late as last Monday was in New York City basically saying that he knows there are Republicans that are willing to work with him but they’re afraid of their base, or they’re afraid of Rush Limbaugh. Always describing ulterior motives to his opponents, always questioning whether there’s an honest disagreement or not. There’s no honest policy disagreement with this administration, and as a result it has created this culture of intimidation that’s pervasive throughout the White House and the federal government. And I think all of this is a product of that, I really do.

Todd asked Rubio how this might impact immigration reform.  Rubio said: “One of the impediments … is a lack of trust in the federal government.” Indeed.

I guess Senator “Rube” believes if he criticizes Obama we will forget his buy-in to letting the DHS Secretary have complete and unrevokeable power over who gets to be an American citizen and when?

Oh, and we shouldn’t pay any attention to the part of the “immigration” bill that would create a national name/face database for every American citizen serf either.

Rubio (and the rest of the GOP in Congress) are really nothing more than conservative bloggers who get to use the choo choo train at the Capitol.

AllahP and Ed could do as well. Real bloggers say “somebody should do something”. Our Congresscritters do no more than that.

Rubio and the Pubs need to just shut up.

Realistically, crap like this only feeds the ‘politicization’ meme.

Just shut up and do what you’re supposed to do.

Stay away from the cameras, don’t go on talk shows, and quit advertising yourselves.

These jokers like Rubio, angling for press, are only strengthening the liberal Low Information Providers with talking points.

Shut up and do your job! You can get your air time later, when you have signed your name to a resulting report.

Wigglesworth on May 16, 2013 at 12:42 PM

This maybe the first time since 1776 that we have seen a power based government in full retreat.
1. What has caused it?
2. Up coming 2014 mid term election?
3. Picked on the press?
4. All to many scandals?
5. The bloggers?
Don’t know. Don’t really care. It is a good thing that it is occurring.
I’ve been at this fighting the “Big Gov.” for over 50 years now. Some times with some degree of success.
WARRINGS:
1. THE POWERS will try to keep the scandals separate. this keeps the interest in any one scandal to a below 50% in the public polls. That way they can say “What Difference Does It Make” no one really cares. This also closes the issue that when all the dots are connected, point to the First Tuesday in November 2012.
2. THE POWERES will next change from the “Defend” mode to the “Discovery” mode. This is an attempt to show “How can we be the bad guys if we find the problems”.
3. THE POWERS will put out so many minor controversies as to cloud the real issues.

Now the big concerns. The government often works in “Mysterious Ways” that we some times find difficult to understand and may seem like a scandal but in reality is a government working as it should. If we jump on every controversy then the “THE POWERS” will just stand by and hand out tin foil hats at a major rate and will be able to get away with all of this.

To win back our government we need to stand the line on real scandals, the ones that matter and go for the truth. Not allowing the momentum to be diluted with trivia.

“The latest Public Policy Polling data bears sobering news for Senator Marco Rubio, showing his support among conservatives has substantially decreased since last month.

When asked for their preferred GOP candidate, only 17% of “very conservative” respondents favored Rubio, while only 18% of “somewhat conservative” respondents favored Rubio.

This is a steep decline from the same poll’s findings in April, when Rubio’s support was 26% among the“very conservative” and 22% among the “somewhat conservative.”

The survey was conducted between May 6–9th. The survey released in April was conducted between March 27–30th. The “Gang of 8″ bill, spearheaded by Senator Rubio, was released April 17th.

Notably, Rubio’s support among Hispanics also appears to have decreased following the unveiling of the “Gang of 8″ bill. The previous poll demonstrated 39% of Hispanics had a favorable view of Rubio, while the latest poll demonstrates that number has decreased to 34%…”

“The president doesn’t have clean hands in this,” Marco Rubio said this morning of the IRS scandal. ”This organization of his, this administration has created a culture of intimidation.”

The Administration “created a culture of intimidation”? That culture was learned perfected by the Community Organizer long before he became president. The educated voting public knew a lot of this before the Community Organizer was elected the first time but starry eyes and platitudes trumped serious consideration of the Community Organizers leadership abilities and management skills.

Our “elected” Republican leaders lead from behind as much as the Community Organizer.

Todd asked Rubio how this might impact immigration reform. Rubio said: “One of the impediments … is a lack of trust in the federal government.” Indeed.

Yes, Senator Blinded By The Obvious.

One of the major reasons we peasants out here in Flyover Country oppose “immigration reform” is that we have learned the hard way that you and your cronies in The Only Places That Matter (DC, NYC, LA, etc.) will tell us one thing, and then do something entirely different. And every time, it’s something that furthers your “DREAM” of making this country look more like…Europe.

Somehow, we just don’t believe that’s a good idea. What with Europe having spawned most of the major wars on Earth for the last several centuries, and all. And also with European governments’ irritating tendencies to treat their subjects like sheep, to be shorn as desired and then made into mutton when they no longer produce enough wool to suit their owners leaders.

We know you don’t like us- because we’re not exactly like you. And we know that the regard of your fellow Members of the Club counts for more in your mind than your responsibility to do what your constituents sent you there to do- and, more importantly, to prevent.

You should just be aware that your job isn’t a lifetime sinecure’. And that even if you think you can always get 50% + 1 votes to stay in it, there are other ways to fire you.

It’s amazing what can be done with a recall petition. Think about it.

Rubio is absolutely correct about this. GOP leadership needs to make Obama eat all of his words about so-called civility. And they can start with Obama calling the tea party teabaggers! That has just burned me to no end! No apology. Just snickering from the left. One of FOX19′s two sources went on say that these four IRS workers claim “they simply did what their bosses ordered.” FOX19 reported on Tuesday that the report by the Office of Inspector General states that senior IRS officials knew agents were targeting Tea Party groups as early as 2011.

Land, you are the idiots of the world, laughed at, for the best of reasons.

These are dumb thugs, who scrooom you.

#FACT There are more Marines holding umbrellas for POTUS than were guarding Amb. Stevens in #Benghazi

Resist We Much on May 16, 2013 at 1:12 PM

At presser right now, bat face has Marines holding umbrellas over him and Turkish PM.
Geez maybe they should have checked the weather and held it indoors.

I work within sight of the Washington Monument. It isn’t even raining.

Happy Nomad on May 16, 2013 at 1:12 PM

…You read it right, the reporter asked if he would support an Independent Counsel taking over the IRS scandal….& HE SAID NO!

‘I did not know anything until it was leaked to the media…’ & yes, I STILL oppose an Independent Counsel that has the judicial power to find & acto on criminal activity, which could include jail time!

The Three Monkeys of Oblivion:

Obama
Holder
Hillary Clinton

…or the most inept 3 people in the administration. You prove to me otherwise.

One more risible item – Obama wants new law, one of which a federal protection of the free press law.

FOOOOOOOOOOOL, they are protected by the 1st Amendment.

Here comes Amnesty Rubio. Lolol. Amigo your base has deserted you. No more presidente amigo.

HotAirLib on May 16, 2013 at 1:13 PM

I’m a bit tired of seeing Rubio’s face at this point. I don’t know if he’s trying to recover some lost goodwill with conservatives, but he’ll learn, hopefully, that we’re neither as moronic nor as morally destitute as liberals – we actually care when our politicians espouse bad ideas and policies.

Saying a few right things at the right time is fine; does not erase the wrong things you’ve said and done and continue to try to press on us on a different topic.

So yeah, thanks Rubio. And re: your amnesy/illegal immigration push, go f*ck yourself.

Midas on May 16, 2013 at 1:13 PM

People please, please, please do not get sucked in to an enthusiasm that will, I fear, be fleeting. I have commented dozens of time that the Republican leadership is weak and not up to not only this task but, quite frankly, any task other than collecting their pay checks.

“We will remain committed to getting to the bottom of this no matter what hap….oh look, shiny!!”

We have been bitterly disappointed time and again by the fecklessness of what is suppose to be our leadership but who are nothing more than political hacks afraid of the press and afraid of the president. How can we even possibly think this will be any different. I predict that 30 days from now this will be a none event and in Jay Carney’s words something that happened “a long time ago”

They cannot and I believe will never get over their desire to be loved by the MSM even though they never will.

I encourage you to get involved in your local Tea parties and work to elect leaders who will stand up to this Socialist juggernaut; this bunch has shot their wad, they are done.

Isn’t seizing AP phone records less about intimidating the AP, and more about intimidating those that might want to talk to the AP?

Arnold Yabenson on May 16, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Speaking of the IRS scandal … in a live press conference Obama just made it about himself — he said he’s a public figure, so that he might be a target of future administrations, so that we’re all vulnerable.

I’m amazed that he’s making this about himself, to the point of conveying the sentiment “of course I’m interested in correcting this problem with the IRS, because it could affect me in the future”. I mean, what towering narcissism.

Paul-Cincy on May 16, 2013 at 1:14 PM

Ot Dear Leader: I did not know about the IG report until it was released…
He did not answer the question posed to him…

Better question: What did Valerie Jarrett know and when did she know it..?

d1carter on May 16, 2013 at 1:14 PM

If you were Obama, and you were involved in all of this malfeasance and Dereliction of Duty, would you want an Independent Counsel appointed?

What I find so sadly funny is that liberal ‘males’ think they’re somehow superior to Conservative men who provide for their wives and children, by the sweat of their brows.

He’s covering for those in the White House and others that either knew or directed the IRS actions…

I knew he was done when he started running ads on the Rush Limbaugh Show trying to generate support; that turkey’s dead, stick a fork in it.

E9RET on May 16, 2013 at 1:16 PM

The only thing you need to know about the IRS Scandal just came out of Obama’s mouth as a result of the very 1st question:
I do NOT support an Independent Counsel taking over the IRS scandal administration – the INTERNAL investigation promised by Holder, the guy who perpetrated 3 Felony counts of Perjury before Congress & the 1st Atty General in U.S. History to be CENSURED, will be good enough!

Bat face had a few drops on his shoulders. It has quit sprinkling now. He shooed off the Marines. Wasn’t very polite, no surprise there. I haven’t actually seen bat face live in a while. My word he is grayer than ever. Time for a dye job.
