Video: These IRS and DOJ scandals are among the worst excesses I’ve seen, says … Andrea Mitchell

posted at 11:21 am on May 14, 2013 by Allahpundit

Via Newsbusters, if you’ve got reporters now saying stuff like this on the air at Obama TV, you’ve got something. I’m pleasantly surprised that she named two different scandals as big deals, as there seems to be a developing strategy (on Twitter at least) among lefties to choose just one as the “real scandal” as a way of minimizing the rest. If that’s how this shakes out, the AP/DOJ showdown will quickly become the “real scandal,” partly because it’s legitimately troubling, partly because the media has a professional stake in it, and partly because it probably has the least amount of “legs” for Republicans as an electoral issue before the midterms. (Although don’t put it past some especially committed lefties to conclude that the real scandal here is, naturally, the GOP.) The flaw in that strategy, though, is that the IRS story simply won’t stop growing; pause here and take a gander at just the last 16 hours or so of our front page. This clusterfark may reach the point where it’s narrative-proof, even if the narrative involves beating O up over a different scandal in the name of limiting the damage.

Speaking of which, the IRS’s own narrative is likely to shift soon to “we agonized over what we were doing and came to realize it was wrong.” That’s a lie. According to HuffPo, which has seen the appendix to the forthcoming IG report, it was only when complaints from tea-party groups started trickling into the media last year — causing some “respectable” media outlets to laugh — that the agency started to clean up its act. To think, if only the DOJ had snooped on those reporters too to shut them up, there might be tea-party harassment ongoing to this day:

The appendix, obtained by The Huffington Post on Monday, also shows that IRS officials began to express concern regarding media reports on their activities. In February and March of 2012, the timeline in the appendix of the report by the treasury inspector general for tax administration notes that “numerous news articles began to be published with complaints from Tea Party organizations,” which led to congressional interest. On March 23 and March 27, top officials at the IRS -– including current acting commissioner Steven Miller –- “discussed concerns with the media attention the Tea Party applications were receiving.”

The first specific change in how the IRS was engaging these tea party groups did not happen, according to the inspector general’s report, until Feb. 29, 2012, around the time that media reports were getting the IRS’ attention. At this time, Lerner halted new requests for information, and discussed rescinding the IRS demand that groups print out their entire website. The second substantive change came on March 8, 2012, when Miller, then the deputy commissioner for services and enforcement, told a unit within the IRS that if an applicant contacted them about “having to provide donor information, the Determinations Unit would allow them to not send the donor names but would inform them that the IRS may need it later.”

Wait a sec. I thought Miller, allegedly, didn’t find out that tea-party groups were being targeted until May 2012. Now HuffPo has him fretting about media coverage in late March. How long did this guy know this was going on while saying nothing?

Exit question: Will the media learn any lessons from this about not initially dismissing criticisms of Obama’s administration out of hand simply because they come from conservatives? (Exit answer: No.)

First they came for Beck, then they came for Limbaugh, then at the same time they were coming after Tea Party groups, and “Patriot” organizations, and then as it turns out Jewish groups. And the reporters in the mainstream media said NOTHING.

…..but now?……NOW they are interested?

Taken Totally this shows an endemic failure in the system. A betrayal of the Public trust. A total disconnect with WE THE PEOPLE replaced with a blind party loyalty for the perpetuation of a ruling class dynasties.

Benghazi happened overseas, Fast & Furious was weird. AP happened to a bunch of reporters. The IRS scandal happened to ordinary Americans, that’s the one that’s going to resonate with the American populace.

rbj on May 14, 2013 at 11:32 AM

Speaking of which, the IRS’s own narrative is likely to shift soon to “we agonized over what we were doing and came to realize it was wrong.” That’s a lie.

Of course it is a lie.

From the appendix:

On March 23 and March 27, top officials at the IRS -– including current acting commissioner Steven Miller –- “discussed concerns with the media attention the Tea Party applications were receiving.”…

They weren’t concerned they were targeting innocent Americans for partisan purposes. They were concerned that those noisy Tea Partiers were not taking their harassment quietly and there was media attention. Which, of course, is what led to the Congressional interest which brought the whole thing down.

Does Lois Lerner suddenly decide to spend more time with her family before or after Friday’s Congressional hearing in Ways and Means?

mbs on May 14, 2013 at 11:57 AM

I’m beginning to suspect the libs and lefties in the MSM have a plan to be initially critical of Comrade O and then back away.

They do that sort of thing periodically so they have something to point to and use as a defense when later accused of bias. But they have never have done it with the His Gloriousness, The Untouchable One since the 2008 election. They managed to get him past the 2012 election bid and it is still early in his second term, so he has plenty of time to recover and they can help with the rehabilitation.

Also, their bias has become so obvious they may think they need to do something to redirect the trend of public opinion about it. It’s hard to ignore all of news that has broken in the past few weeks.

But when Dear Leader’s admin gets all of its talking points revised and edited, settles on a narrative, and gets everyone saying the same thing the MSM may start saying… “Oh, that explains it. This really is a big to do about nothing!” HA’s trolls are already spouting that.

I just don’t see the left-wing MSM following through on any of this. How could they do that to The First Black President?

Only if public opinion turns solidly against Dear Leader can anything substantial come out of this. Because that’s when primitive poltical survival instincts will kick in. That’s when some elected Dems would start abandoning him and start to looking out for their own hides.

farsighted on May 14, 2013 at 11:57 AM

Thousands of black and hispanic “farmers” (at least in their imaginations, for a few seconds) received $50,000 checks from the USDA for imaginary discrimination, all in the name of “social justice” (righting wrongs that never actually happened to the check recipients — at a cost of billions of dollars to seriously wronged U.S. taxpayers).

Deja Vu: IRS boss of Tea Party probes targeted anti-Clinton group in 1990s

Steven T. Miller, the acting IRS commissioner who managed the division that has admitted targeting anti-Obama Tea Party groups, was one of several agents who investigated anti-Clinton organizations including Judicial Watch during that Democrat’s administration, according to court documents and interviews.

Miller, who headed the IRS Services and Enforcement Division from 2009 until the end of last year, is named in court documents as part of a trio of Internal Revenue Service officials who allegedly characterized the 1998-2001 investigation of Judicial Watch as politically motivated.

According to court papers, one agent in the case reportedly told the legal watchdog group, “What do you expect when you sue the president?” Miller reportedly added that the Judicial Watch audit, coming after the group sent the White House a lengthy Freedom of Information Act request, “had created at least the appearance of a problem.”

Perhaps last Friday that theory would’ve made sense, but this IRS story keeps getting bigger every day. Now we’ve got a reporter who did a tough interview with Obama last spring saying he was audited shortly thereafter. And the IRS apparently went after certain Tea Party groups right after Sen. Bennet of Colorado(and a few other Dems) publicly complained about them.

Granted, this is all circumstantial right now, but once people have to appear before Congress and testify under oath, the dam could really start to break. If it turns out that the Democrat Party was essentially in bed with the IRS in going full Alinsky on conservatives during the last 2 election cycles, the fit will really hit the shan.

Next up on the Obama scandal scorecard…EPA

“The IRS may not be the only federal agency singling out conservative groups. Records suggest that the Environmental Protection Agency has made it easier for environmental groups to file Freedom of Information Act requests than conservative organizations.

According to EPA records obtained by the free market Competitive Enterprise Institute, since January 2012 the agency has granted fee waivers for 75 out of 82 Freedom of Information Act Requests sent by major environmental groups, denying only seven of them — meaning green groups saw their fees waived 92 percent of the time.

At the same time, the EPA frequently denied fee waivers to conservative groups. EPA records show that the agency rejected or ignored 21 out of 26 fee waiver requests from such conservative groups as the Competitive Enterprise Institute, the Institute for Energy Research, and Judicial Watch — an 81 percent rejection rate…

Fees vary based on how many documents are requested, what medium they are requested in and how much government research is involved.

“This is as clear an example of disparate treatment as the IRS hurdles selectively imposed upon groups with names ominously reflecting an interest in, say, a less intrusive or biased federal government,” said CEI senior fellow Chris Horner, author of “The Liberal War on Transparency.”

Horner described the EPA’s actions as “a clear pattern of favoritism for allied groups and “a concerted campaign to make life more difficult for those deemed unfriendly.”

The fee waivers to environmental groups were also granted on the “initial determination” stage, meaning these green groups did not have to appeal for fee waivers. However, Horner said he had to fight many fee waiver denials, all of which were overturned on appeal.

“Their practice is to take care of their friends and impose ridiculous obstacles to deny problematic parties’ requests for information,” Horner said.

Many of these environmental groups also regularly sue the EPA in what are called “sue and settle” lawsuits. This occurs when the EPA quickly settles a lawsuit with an outside group — frequently environmental organizations — and then is forced by a court order to promulgate new regulations.

Among the groups that frequently sue the EPA are the Sierra Club, NRDC, and the Center for Biological Diversity. Many of these settlements also result in taxpayers paying for the attorneys’ fees of environmental groups.

Republicans have criticized the EPA for settling with environmental groups because it results in less public scrutiny over rule-making. Others critics charge that it is a way for the agency to collude with environmental groups, giving activists the policy outcomes they originally wanted.

“Sue-and-settle litigation damages the transparency, public participation and judicial review protections Congress has guaranteed for all of our citizens in the rulemaking process,” said Iowa Republican Sen. Chuck Grassley. “And, it’s a tremendous burden on job-creating businesses, especially small businesses.”

The EPA did not respond to a request for comment…”

Really puts the administration’s attempts to marginalize “voices” for warning against the tyranny of an out-of-control government in perspective, doesn’t it?

Keep your eye on Shamnesty. This is about the time that Reid and the Gang of 8 would try to ram that through.

The MSM is beginning to realize that, if they don’t start manning the lifeboats, they’re going to go down with this sinking Ship of State.

Our trolls have been spending the last couple of days repotting the indoor plants contemplating how to post here and the rest of the time sobbing into their pillows.

I’m suspicious. Is this a “don’t throw me in the briar patch” diversion?

If they will admit this, there must be something worse they are trying to black out or obscure.

Andrea Bitchell pops her head out of obama’s butt to take a breath, and she gets slapped in the face by reality … OUCH – that stings!

Benghazi happened overseas, Fast & Furious was weird. AP happened to a bunch of reporters. The IRS scandal happened to ordinary Americans, that’s the one that’s going to resonate with the American populace.

No — not “ordinary” Americans — tax paying Americans. Now take another look at the people who voted for Obama w/ that in mind.

Actually ol’ Andrea became a reporter earlier than this, she was the first to break the story of Boss Tweed.

Fenris on May 14, 2013 at 12:22 PM

I believe Obama’s MSM team is focusing these scandals as a deflection from Benghazi because they want to concentrate on abuses where they believe they can completely isolate him from responsibility and even make him the “hero” with a pro-forma denouncement.

I remember when the Tea Party was quoting Gandhi:

“First they ignore you, then they ridicule you, then they fight you, then you win.”

It’s about time we had a win.

Hey media! Ian Fleming wrote it best:

“Once is happenstance. Twice is coincidence. Three times is enemy action.”

And… To paraphrase Pogo, hey media!

“We have met the enemy… and he is you.”

“I’m finished.”

You enabled this Andrea, you own it too. Disgusting. Why is she doing this? Well it may come out that the overarching complicity of the LSM will now rise to a more prominent level. On every channel. Early wringing of hands is what I see in her.

All these scandals are bad, but we’ll never have justice while the Dems control the Senate. The liberals care nothing for the rule of law.
